A Chatham juvenile is in stable condition after accidentally being shot the day after Christmas. According to reports, the accident happened on Monday, December 26th when what started as a lesson in gun safety went horribly wrong resulting in the youth being shot in the stomach area. First responders quickly arrived on the scene and the youth was airlifted to a hospital where she underwent emergency surgery to repair the damage done. After another surgery was performed the next day, the youth was reported to be in a stable condition.
Due to the person involved being a juvenile, no identification of the victim was released.
Shaken by the accident, but thankful for the report that the youth is expected to make a full recovery, Chatham Mayor Gregory Harris made a request of all residents and offered a reminder.
“I ask that you keep this young person and the family in your prayers as even though it is expected that a full recovery will be made, there are still difficult days ahead for them all,” said Harris. “I also urge everyone to use this as a reminder that no matter how much experience you have, accidents happen and it is very important that all firearms be handled with extreme caution.”
