Parish Pride! Jackson Parish athletes bring home state track championships

Jackson Parish didn’t send as many athletes to the LHSAA state track and field championships as some this past Thursday and Friday but the ones who went did well. Very well! No make that remarkably well!

A total of thirty athletes from JHHS, Quitman and Weston swarmed the Bernie Moore Track Complex on the campus of LSU with 17 from Quitman and 9 from Weston competing on Thursday in Class B and 3 from JHHS seeing action on Friday in Class 2A.

Six times, thinclads from Jackson Parish won state titles. Silver medals were won in five events along with a bronze in one giving the three local schools podium placements (first, second, third) in 16 total events.

Add to the fact that local schools earned points in nine more events then the sum total comes up to 30 athletes scoring in 25 events against the best the state has to offer.

Quitman High School: Had the most participants with 17 and paced the parish with six total medals, including three gold winning performances. Leading the way was Emma Carter winning the high jump for an incredible third year in a row, equaling a school and parish record of winning three straight state titles. Bryan Lay also turned in a repeat championship performance claiming his second straight gold medal in the pole vault and the boys 4×200 meter relay team of Geoffrey Maxwell, Jayden Harts, Brayden Smith and Nathan Harvey shaved nearly a full second off their previous best to win a third state championship event. Harvey also won a silver medal in the 110 meter hurdles as did Neysha Johnson, Maddie Grace Giddens, Emayshia Wiley, and Bethany Leach in the girls 4×100 meter relays. The four also won bronze inn the 4×200 meter relays.

Quitman had several others score points including 8th grader, Kaleigh King, who burst onto the state scene with a fourth place finish in the pole vault and coming in fifth in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles. Brayden Smith and Taylor Huddleston was fourth in the 200 meters and 1600 meters respectively while Lily Kate Odom finished fifth in the triple jump. Gage Horton and Sebastian Guinn also scored points with sixth place finishes in the 3200 meters and shot put.

Jonesboro-Hodge: An old saying is that dynamite comes in small packages. JHHS had the smallest contingent of any local school with only three participants but made a very loud noise with two gold medal and two silver medal performances. Talk about getting your money’s worth!

Savantez Phillips, Zion Gray and Caira Gray all turned in career best performances with both boys winning their respective events and Gray coming in second in the two she competed in. Phillips ran a blistering 14.35 in the 110 meter hurdles, almost a half a second faster than ever before, to earn national elite second team performance honors by LA Milesplit.com. Not to be outdone, “Zee” Gray  soared nearly two feet further than his previous best to win the triple jump.  By winning two silver medals, including her performance in the triple jump that earned a second team national ranking by Milesplit.com, Ciara Gray proved that she is the next in the long line of generational JHHS female track athletes. The talented freshman also came in second in the 300 meter hurdles, compiling a time of over a second and a half faster than at any time this year.

Weston High School: By claiming a state championship in the shot put and a silver medal in the discus Jalexia Claridy put herself into contention of being the Class B top performing female athlete in field events. Jayden Simmons also scored points for the Wolves with a sixth place finish in the 110 meter hurdles.

2023 LHSAA State Track and Field Championships

State Tourney Bound! Weston beats Converse in Division V quarterfinals

Weston High opened the 2023 baseball season by shaking hands with the state champions from 1977 and 1982-84.  Now the 2023 edition of Wolves are in position to receive their own acclaim. With a thrilling 5-3, eight inning victory at Converse this past Wednesday in the Division V Quarterfinals, Weston has advanced to the state tournament.

Final Four! Next up for the district 1B co-champion and #7 seed Wolves, now  17-14 on the year, is #3 Pitkin (18-6), the second place team in district 4B. The Division V semi-final contest will be played at McMurray Park in Sulphur. Game time is set for 11:00am on May 9th on Field 41. At the same time on Field 40, defending state champion and #1 seed Choudrant will play #5 Anacoco in the other semifinal contest, with the winners slated to battle for the title on May 12th.

Third time a charm!  The past two years Weston had been in the exact same position of needing one win to make it to the state tourney. This time around the Wolves got over the “hump” to earn their first state tournament trip in nearly 30 years.

Overcoming Adversity!  It wasn’t easy. Then again at this stage it isn’t supposed to be. It is hard enough to get to state in under normal circumstances but the adversity the Wolves overcame to earn the trip south deserves mention. It was bad enough that Weston was forced to enter the playoffs without two key contributors, (Braden Theriot and Colton Blundell) both sidelined for the year just prior to the playoffs. Then to make matters worse Weston was behind 3-1 to their nemesis who put them out in the same game last year with just two innings in regulation left to play. Shorthanded and on the short end, Weston refused to die. Digging deep within, the Wolves scored twice in the top of the sixth and then added two more in the top of the 8th inning.

Excellent execution! Sawyer Watkins opened the contest by coming back from an 0-2 count to coax a leadoff walk and then took second on a wild pitch. Bryce Zehr then perfectly executed a bunt placed so well that the Converse pitcher, who realistically didn’t have a shot at throwing Zehr out, threw it away allowing Watkins to score and giving the Wolves an early 1-0 lead.

Falling behind! Tait Henderson, had cruised through the first three innings, allowing only a leadoff single in the bottom of the first inning that was immediately wiped out with a double play. Converse finally broke through with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning to go up 3-1, putting together a single and a double after two walks.

Breaking Through! Weston had gotten a base runner on in each of the first five innings but other than the first inning run had nothing to show for it. Time was  running out. Henderson opened the sixth inning with a walk and moved to third on a Cole Tolar line single to right. Cooper Delaney then did exactly what was needed by hitting a ground ball to second that would score Henderson but got an added benefit when the ball was misplayed giving Weston men on first and second with no outs. Drew Browning took advantage by stroking a single to right field that scored Drew Williams, who had come in to pinch run for Henderson, to knot the game at 3 each.

Scary moment! After the first Converse batter got out in the bottom of the 7th inning, Weston committed their only error of the game that put a runner on second base. A fly out moved the runner to third. That brought up the Converse leadoff batter who had already reached on a hit and a walk. WHS coach Kemp called for an intentional walk. Delaney, who had relieved Henderson in the fifth inning, made the move pay off by striking out the next batter and send the game to extra innings. WHEW!

“Small Ball” Stands Tall! With one out in the top of the 8th inning, Browning took a  cut and made contact, barely. The ball went all of about six feet but it just as well as had been hit off the outfield wall as in the attempt to thrown him out at first, the Converse catcher threw it away allowing the hustling Browning to make it all the way to third. Blaine Graham followed by coaxing a walk. Once again, Kemp played the percentages and called for a bunt. Once again it was executed perfectly as Henderson laid it down and beat it out for a single that scored Browning and advanced Graham to third. Jacob Gill followed with a fly out to center to score Graham and give Weston the 5-3 lead.

Total team effort!  Seven Wolves got one hit apiece, All singles and only a few of them got out of the infield. Five scored one run each. There were no “big blasts.” No one player who “stole the show.” Time and again the balance of the contest rode on the tremendous savvy of Coach Kemp and his staff who bravely called on the players to come through in crucial moments. Each time they did.

In retrospect the way the contest was played it had a fitting end. In a game where failing to execute meant certain defeat, it was several perfectly placed batted balls that never got past the pitchers mound that made the difference. It’s not “new math” but in this case 20 feet of ground balls equals a 200 mile road trip.

QHS and Eli Walker takes 3rd at Division IV State Golf Tourney

Quitman High School and Ouachita Christian have dueled for supremacy on the links all spring long.  On May 1st and 2nd, the two top small school golf programs in northeast Louisiana went at it again, but this time it was Bayou Bend Country Club in Crowley, LA, site of the Division IV state championship tournament where OCS finished in second and the Wolverines came in third. Episcopal-Acadiana, which shot 304-306 over the two days claimed the state title.

Heading into the second day, Quitman High, one of only two “non-select” schools to make the state tourney, trailed OCS by three tiny strokes for second place with Eli Walker sitting in second place overall for individual medalist after being one of only three players who shot even par or better.

With Noah Leach and Cam Deal improving 9 strokes each, Pete Simonelli shaving two strokes off and Ian Tilley one, the Wolverines put on a fierce charge. By the end of the day, the Wolverines had improved by a whopping 15 strokes from their first-day score but OCS matched the 308 team score to stay just ahead.eli walker at state 2023

Like the team, Eli Walker also came in third place in medalist play. What’s more the local linkster ended with the distinction of having the lowest score of any competitor from north Louisiana, much like he has done all spring.

Tayt Culpepper of Weston shot two rounds in the 70s and improved three strokes on the final day to finish in 14th with Quitman’s Simonelli turning in his best two-day aggregate of the year to come in 16th place out of the 50 competitors. Leach was just behind at #20 while Deal finished 28th and Tilley 32nd overall.

Division IV Final Team Standings (Top Five)

1. Episcopal-Acadiana (304-306) = 610
2. Ouachita Christian (320-308) = 628
3. Quitman High School (323-308) = 631
4. Cedar Creek (324 – 328) = 652
5. Ascension Catholic (324 – 332) = 656

Final Medalist Standings (Top Five)

1. Logan Hertz – Christ Episcopal: 67-69 = 136
2. Cole Haase – Riverside Academy: 70-72 – 142
3. Eli Walker – Quitman High School: 70-73 = 143
4. Adam Trahan – ESA: 74-69 = 143
5. Caden Lester – Ouachita Christian: 73-73 – 146

Ajay Tew competes in Division III state tourney

Ajay Tew represented Jonesboro-Hodge at the Division III State Golf Championships that was played at Cane Row Golf and Turf Club in New Iberia. Competing in medalist play, Tew shot a 45-57 over the two days to finish with a 102 total that was good for 45th place.

Quitman dominates 1B Softball All-District Team

To the victors go the spoils. After dominating the competition in district 1B and for that matter everyone in Division V other than one team, it is no surprise that Quitman had the lion’s share of players selected to the All-District team. Not only did the Lady Wolverines come away with Cali Deal winning Player of the Year honors and Justin Dodson being selected as Coach of the Year, the entire starting lineup was chosen for either the first or second team.

Joining Deal on the first team is Maggie Guyotte, Madison Chaplin, Madeline Vail and Maddie Kaye Brymer. Being named to the second team was Karley Huckaby, Hallie Kate Pullig, Skylar Hall and Averie Williams. Anna Claire Leach received an Honorable Mention.

Second place Weston had Jacie Ledford named to the first team with Carly Jo Griffin and Betty McCarty earning second team honors. Carlynn Watter and Anslee Aldy was designated as Honorable Mention.

Carrie Smith named Chase Frasier Memorial Scholarship recipient

Graduating Weston High School senior Carrie Smith has been awarded the annual Chase Frasier Memorial Scholarship. In honor of the former Weston High baseball coach who was tragically killed in 2020, each year a senior from WHS who has demonstrated academic excellence and civic pride that is going to Louisiana Tech to continue their education is awarded the scholarship. On site to present Smith with the award was Mrs. Kristie Frasier.

“We are very happy for Carrie as she is a very deserving winner of the scholarship,” said WHS Principal Ritchie Tolar. “She has been a wonderful representative of Weston High throughout her high school career and we wish her the best in her future studies.”

APRIL2023 – MIXTURE OF AGGRAVATION AND EXCITEMENT

The month of May is here and I’m glad. It was with mixed feelings that I ripped April off my calendar and bid it good bye with good riddance mixed with a measure of thanks. Let me explain.

The month of April brought with it the bad temper Mother Nature can sometimes show. Some Aprils and sunny and warm; storm free and pleasant. Not this April, though. We had storms causing damage around the area. We had too much rain at times but the main thing that chapped my rear was the early morning temperatures.

April is when I usually begin doing something I love to do and that’s take a basket of crickets, a comfortable chair and set up shop on the bank of a favorite pond. The bluegills are usually bedding by then and it takes a minimum of effort to fill a cooler with all the big fat bluegills and chinquapins I care to clean.

I keep a daily log of weather conditions and looking back over the log for April, I see 52, 48, 49, 51 et al as morning temperatures for April and my favorite time to hit the pond is in the mornings. I’m not ready to have to have to wear a jacket to fish for bream so I’ll have to wait and see if May offers more comfortable conditions.

While April chilled us and didn’t let us take coffee cups comfortably to the porch to enjoy spring weather, something else took place that sort of made us forget about what a bad mood Mother Nature was in that month.Every year around this time, song birds that have spent the winter in the tropics begin thinking about heading north where they’ll spend the summer and fall nesting and rearing offspring.

During this time of time of year, they begin first gathering on the coast to restore their strength and energy from the exertion of winging their way across the Gulf. Birders from all over visit the coast to experience this spectacle seeing birds they only see this time of year.

Once their stamina is replenished, they begin filtering north making their way through our part of the world, occasionally stopping by to sample our bird feeders that are usually visited by those native to north Louisiana – cardinals, blue jays, chickadees, titmice and such. Some that come through this time of year stay the summer, rearing their young while others bid us adieu after filling their stomachs before moving on.

Every year about this time, I start looking for one particular species of song bird, one that always stops by for a week or so before moving north. It’s the rose breasted grosbeak, a stunningly beautiful bird with eye-catching markings; a black back, white underside but what catches your attention is the crimson throat and upper breast the grosbeaks sport. The female has the appearance of a large brown sparrow and I’ll usually see a pair and sometimes two stop by to sample what’s on my feeder.

This year, something happened that made me forget that April robbed me of my chance to fish for bluegills because of the sheer number of these beautiful birds that have converged on my feeder. I was thrilled when my first one showed up April 20. What I haven’t expected is the fact that the grosbeak flood gates opened and I’m filling my feeder several times a day because there have been so many.

One morning, I counted more than a dozen on the feeder, on the ground and on nearby branches. It’s not just me seeing them; reports have come in all around the area of folks seeing bunches of grosbeaks around their feeders.

So April, I’m giving you a pass this year. Your weather stunk but being inundated with so many rose breasted grosbeaks is a nice consolation prize.

”Rose Breasted Grosbeaks have visited our feeders in abundance this spring on their way to northern breeding grounds.” Glynn Harris photo

Ponderings……

Michael had a positive attitude. When someone asked him how he was doing, he would reply, “If I were any better, I would be twins!” He was a natural motivator. If a co-worker was having a bad day, Michael would encourage them and help them to see the positive side of the situation.

A friend asked how he could be so positive all the time. After all, it seemed so unnatural compared to the rest of the world. Michael replied, “Each morning I wake up and say to myself, ‘You have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood, or you can choose to be in a bad mood.’ I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim, or I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it.”

The friend protested that even though it sounded great in theory it would be hard to live out.

Michael responded, “Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It’s your choice how you live your life.”

Several years later, Michael was involved in a serious accident as he fell sixty feet from a communications tower. As he lay on the ground, the first thing he thought of was the well-being of his soon-to-be-born daughter. Then, he remembered that he had two choices: He could choose to live or … he could choose to die. He chose to live.

The paramedics arrived and went to work. They kept telling Michael that he was going to be fine. But when they wheeled him into the ER, he saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses. He began to feel fear overcoming his body because he could read their eyes: “He’s a dead man.” He knew he needed to take action.

A big burly nurse was shouting questions. She asked Michael if he was allergic to anything. He replied, “Yes.” The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for Michael to fill in the missing blank of his allergy. He took a deep breath and yelled, “Gravity.” Over their laughter, he said, “I am choosing to live. Operate on me with that understanding.”

After eighteen hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Michael was released from the hospital with rods placed in his back. Michael lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, and because of his amazing attitude. When asked about his health, Michael would respond, “If I were any better, I’d be twins. Want to see my scars?”

What is your attitude doing to you?

Miles for Smiles Dental Clinic visits JHES

On Wednesday, May 3, J-HES provided its first Mobile Dental Care Visit under the care of Dr. Jeremey Sims Alexander. The Miles for Smiles Team of Shreveport was able to service 25+ students. The visit included cleanings, x-rays, fluoride treatments, and fillings (as needed). Each student received a Dental Report Card including follow-up recommendations and was able to return right back to class! The school will receive a School Dental Report Card in the weeks to come.

“I am very thankful for this resource for students. As a Wraparound School, we know the link between poor oral hygiene and academic success, and even worse, heart disease/longevity. We have found that many students miss school because of tooth pain that may still go untreated. Poor oral health can have a detrimental effect on a student’s quality of life, their performance at school, and their success later in life. Therefore, we look forward to continuing this partnership in efforts to maintain healthy smiles and academic success!” – Ms. Danielle Copeland, Principal.

This service was provided as part of the Reimagaine Grant, in which the Louisiana Department of Education has provided to our school district. Superintendant David Claxton and the school board members have supported JHES in its efforts to improve services for its students. JHES administration, faculty and staff are apprecitative of the service provided in order to help students maintain good dental hygiene. Parents registered their student for the service a few weeks before the mobile dental clinic came to JHES. Another clinic visit will be held in the Fall of 2023 and Spring 2024. Thank you Miles for Smiles for supporting JHES!!

Daily Devotional by Pam Ford Davis

Dishpan Hands

I once worked at A & W Restaurant; it was not a coveted position.

The manager expected me to wash dishes, act as evening carhop and clean the bathroom before closing. You now understand why people weren’t standing in line to apply for the job. I spent the majority of my work hours at the sink washing dishes; yes, I had dishpan hands.

As a rule, I don’t mind washing dishes at all. It was my first household chore. Mom expected each of her daughters to wash dishes after the family meals. I may have postponed the chore but the dishes were eventually, washed, rinsed and placed in a dish-rack to dry.

I still wash dishes after meals and make an effort try to clean them thoroughly.

Jesus gave reproof. “As He was speaking, a Pharisee asked Him to dine with him. So He went in and reclined at the table. When the Pharisee saw this, he was amazed that He did not first perform the ritual washing before dinner. But the Lord said to him: ‘Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and evil. Fools! Didn’t He who made the outside make the inside too? But give from what is within to the poor, and then everything is clean for you (Luke 11:37-41 HCSB).”

Jesus wants me to be clean; inside and out!

WHS travels to Converse for quarterfinal matchup Wednesday

Weston High will invade Converse on Wednesday, May 3rd, for a quarterfinal matchup looking to punch their ticket to the Division V state baseball tournament held at McMurray Park in Sulphur. The first pitch is slated for 6:00 pm.

In the quarterfinals for the third consecutive year, Weston hopes that the third time will be the charm to advance to the state tourney. The game is a rematch of last year’s 3-2 loss to Converse in the same position of the bracket.

Seeded seventh in Division V, the district 1B co-champion Wolves enter with a 16-14 overall record while Converse, champion of district 3B, brings a 22-5 record into the contest and a #2 ranking.

While not meeting during the regular season, the two schools have played several contests against similar opponents with similar results. Both have beaten Claiborne Christian and Quitman while losing to Class 5A Natchitoches-Central and Division V #1 ranked Choudrant. Weston holds the advantage against St. Mary’s as they won 11-1 while Converse lost 10-0.

The Wolves bring a well balanced team that features seven players who have driven in 10 runs or more and are hitting .250 or better.  Drew Browning leads the way with a .378 batting average with Bryce Zehr close behind with a .371 mark. Cooper Delaney and Cole Tolar check in at .342 and .321 respectively. Weston will be faced with replacing the production of key contributors Braden Theriot and Colton Blundell, who recently were lost for the year.
