
Mayor J. “Spike” Harris and the town of Jonesboro were honored to welcome Louisiana U.S. Representative Julia Letlow to the Jonesboro Civil Rights Memorial Park on August 3rd. The visit was aimed at commemorating the Deacons for Defense and highlighting their pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement.
The event brought together a distinguished group of attendees. Included was Jackson Parish Sheriff Andy Brown, President of the Jackson Parish Police Jury, Todd Culpepper, Jonesboro Alderman James Ginn and other local elected officials. Many other prominent business leaders who share a deep commitment to promoting equality and justice in Jonesboro were also in attendance.
“The Jonesboro Civil Rights Memorial Park holds immense historical significance for our community,” said Mayor Harris. “It stands as a symbol of unity, resilience, and the pursuit of justice, reminding us of the struggles and triumphs that shaped our nation’s history. By paying tribute to the Deacons for Defense, we acknowledge the bravery and determination of these African American men who stood up against racial violence and discrimination in the 1960s.”
During the visit, Mayor Harris and Representative Letlow had the opportunity to explore the park and learn more about the Deacons for Defense’s contributions to the Civil Rights Movement. They engaged in thoughtful conversations with local community members, gaining firsthand insights into the experiences and challenges faced during that era.
Mayor Harris expressed his gratitude for Representative Letlow’s attendance.
