Andy Brown re-elected to unprecedented sixth term as Jackson Parish Sheriff

In 2004, Andy Brown made history when he became the youngest Sheriff ever to be elected in Jackson Parish. Now he has done it again as by garnering 66% of the votes cast on Saturday, October 14th, Brown has been re-elected to an unprecedented sixth term as Sheriff of Jackson Parish.

According to GeauxVote.com, which is the official election site of the Louisiana Secretary of State office, Brown collected 2,997 (66%) of the 4,521 votes cast in Jackson Parish. Cody Cheatwood was next with 1,347 votes (30%) followed by Philip Lawrence who polled 177 votes or 4% of the ballots cast.

Brown wasn’t the only one running for office to be re-elected. Three of the four Jackson Parish Police Jury members who had opposition retained their seats as well. The fourth incumbent got the most votes of the four running for the seat but did not get over 50% of the votes and will now look forward to the runoff election in November.

With an official turnout of only 40.6% of the registered voters in District 2, Lewis Chatham was re-elected as the Police Juror over Michael Dark by the slim margin of 328 – 301.

The margin of victory was even closer for Regina Rowe who retained the District 6 Police Jury seat by outpolling challenger Kirk Halbrook by only 18 votes. With 54.1% of voters in the district turning out, Rowe collected 242 votes to 224 for Halbrook.

District 5 Police Juror Tarneshala “Niki” Cowans had an easier time of it as she gained 271 votes (57% to 201 (43%) for Pervis “Kookie” Wiley in the race that saw only 33.6% of voters in the district cast ballots.

In statewide elections, former Louisiana Attorney General, Jeff Landry, will become the next Governor after collecting 52% of the 1,062,499 votes cast among the 35.8% of voters that turned out. The Republican candidate’s commanding margin was nearly double of what the next closest competitor, Democrat Shawn Wilson garnered.

William “Billy” Nungesser, also had no problem in being re-elected as Lieutenant Governor, getting 66% of the vote meaning that the Republican Party will now control the top two offices in the state.

The races for Secretary of State, Attorney General and Treasurer are far from decided though as each office will face runoff elections. It is the Secretary of State election that was most contested as six candidates gained at least 10% of the vote and no one had as much as 20%.

All four constitutional amendments that were to be determined also passed by wide margins.
