Area Prep Basketball Teams Enter Final Week of District Play

Area prep basketball teams are entering the final week of district play, with only the Quitman High boys still holding on to realistic hope of claiming a district title. The girls teams from Weston, Quitman and Saline along with the Saline boys are two games out with two games left to play and in need of help from others, while the Weston boys and both JHHS squads have been mathematically eliminated from any chances at the district crown. 

Boys District Standings 

District 1B Recap – Quitman and Doyline sit atop the standings with 3-1 records. The pair plays each other on Thursday, February 8th, at Quitman High. That contest also carries heavy weight in regard to postseason play as both are perched in the top ten in the Division V rankings with Quitman at#5 and Doyline at #6. Sitting at 0-4 in district, Weston can do serious harm to any Quitman district title hopes with a victory over their parish rival on Tuesday and looks to finish strong in order to improve their power rating, which currently stands at #23 in Division V.

District 2-3A Recap – With a 1-7 record and two games left to play, Jonesboro-Hodge has no hope of winning district. In regard to possible postseason play it is imperative that the Tigers finish the regular season strong as currently JHHS is squarely on the bubble at #28 in Division IV which has a 28 team playoff bracket. While a victory over Winnfield, ranked 3rd in Division III may not be a reality, a victory over Many, who JHHS beat earlier, in the district final is a real possibility.

District 2C Recap – The loss to Calvin this past Thursday eliminated any title hopes for Saline as it leaves the Bobcats two games back with undefeated Calvin having only one district game left to play. A second place finish boils down to the two contests yet to play against Georgetown beginning with the Monday game at Saline followed by a makeup game on either the following Monday or Tuesday that is required after the previously scheduled contest being postponed due to weather conditions in January. Dodson sits at 0-4 in district play and with a #42 ranking has no hope of postseason play in Division V that has a 28 team bracket.

Girls District Standings

District 1B Recap – With district leader Castor holding a 4-0 record and both Quitman and Weston sitting in second place at 2-2 with only two games left to play including one against each other, a chance at claiming a district title for either Jackson Parish teams isn’t realistic. Still to be determined is who will come in second place, which will basically be determined when the two parish rivals play at Weston on Tuesday. Quitman won on their homecourt the first time they played.

District 3-2A Recap – With a 1-7 record in 3-2A play, the Lady Tigers are not in position to claim a district title and even more importantly are on the outside looking in at postseason play with a #32 ranking in Division IV that only has a 28 team bracket. Victories against both Winnfield and Many in the final week of district play look to be required for JHHS to have a chance to continue playing after the regular season.

District 2C Recap – Calvin has wrapped up the district title via their 7-0 record with only one game left to play and both Saline and Georgetown sitting with two losses each. Like the Saline boys, the Lady Bobcats are currently is one game up in the win column over Georgetown with two games are left to play between the two that will determine who comes in second place in district. With an 0-4 record in district play, Dodson can only play spoiler with games against Calvin and Saline left to play.
