Scott Carter Hangs up his Spikes

When the 2024 prep baseball season ends in the state of Texas, one of the most prolific high school coaches in the sport, Scott Carter, who graduated from Weston High School in 1980, will step away after beginning his career 37 years ago.

For all but three of those years Carter has been a head baseball coach in Louisiana and Texas, having led teams to state titles in both. His list of achievements is mind boggling, beginning with winning an incredible 643 games, which tabulates to nearly 19 wins a season (18.911 to be exact). Twenty-seven times Carter led his team to the playoffs, 16 times a district champion. Four times his squads made the state tournament, three times they won it all.

In 27 of his 34 years on the diamond, Carter ended the season being named as district Coach of the Year. Three times he was voted the state Coach of the Year earning the designation at Sacred Heart High School in Louisiana in 1992 and 1993 after winning back-to-back state titles and again in Texas in 2017 after leading Port Neches-Grove to the school’s first title. A total of 53 players he coached moved on to play college baseball. Eleven more were drafted by Major League baseball teams.

Perhaps his greatest legacy is that he and his daughter Candyce is the only father-daughter combination to coach a team to a state title in the 102-year history of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA).

“I have made the decision to officially retire at the end of 2024. Education and coaching have been my life for the past 37 years with 34 of those years as a head coach. The number of players, teachers and administrators that have had an influence on my life are too many to thank personally. Please accept this as a token of my appreciation for you all,” said Carter. “To my wife and children and grandchildren, you have been my motivation and I thank you and love you from the bottom of my heart. No one understands the coaching profession and all that is gained and sacrificed more than a coaches family. I am truly honored and hope that I have had a positive influence on the lives I have coached as much as they have influenced me. I love you all!”
