Freddie Murrell
May 18, 1939 – October 31, 2024

murrellFreddie Murrell, age 85, of Jonesboro, LA, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, October 31, 2024. He was born May 18, 1939 in Colfax, Louisiana to the late Herbert and Pearl Murrell.

Freddie lived a long, rich life, beginning with a fondly remembered childhood in Grant Parish.

He told many funny tales of a mischievous childhood and rascally teenage escapades with fast cars and pranks shared with his friends and family. Freddie left working the “logging woods” of Grant Parish and went on to become a businessman, owning several successful restaurants. Many will remember Grandma’s Restaurant in Winnfield, LA for its tasty fish, piano music, and superb service. He eventually went on to operate another thriving restaurant in Milton, FL until he retired from the business.

Having strong work ethic, Freddie moved back “home” to work with his brother Arnold in Murrell Brothers Construction, where he drove from Weston to Dry Prong every day for twenty-one years. Working alongside his brother was a fitting culmination of his career, returning full-circle to his beloved Rapides Parish roots and family. Freddie was still “going to work” until two days before his transition.

Freddie was the epitome of a hard working man that believed in providing for his family. Even greater than that, Freddie loved his Lord and Savior. He was a faithful member of Hodge Pentecostal Church, where his church family was dear to him.
Freddie was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Pearl Murrell, as well as his beloved son, Freddie E. Murrell, Jr.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jean; son, Patrick (Charlotte); daughter,Betsy; siblings Reg Murrell, Bertie Smith, and Arnold Murrell. Also left to cherish his memory are Jean’s biological children Murphy Chestnut (Laura), David Chestnut (Denise), Tina Cockerham, and Tammy Holt (Justin), who loved and respected Freddie for the great man he was. His grandchildren and great grandchildren will greatly miss their “Papaw Freddie”, whose face always lit up with delight when they came to visit and play.

The funeral service was held on Sunday, November 3rd, at the Hodge United Pentecostal Church. Internment followed at the Gayla Traina Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends donate to St. Jude’s hospital in Memphis in honor of Crew Tidwell, Freddie’s great-grandson currently undergoing treatment there.
