Quitman sweeps Weston to remain on top of District 1B race

It was “Red Out” night at Weston High School this past Thursday but by the time the night was over both the WHS girls and boys teams were feeling blue as Quitman High won both games. With their 18th straight victory, the Wolverines, ranked #3 in Class B, improved to a sterling 19-2 overall mark on the year and 2-0 in District 1B play. Weston fell to 6-16 and 0-2. On the girls side, the Lady Wolverines and Weston both now have a 14-8 record with QHS moving to 2-0 in district play and Weston falling to 1-1.  

Quitman 83 Weston 39 (boys): QHS found their Jackson Parish neighbor’s gym to their liking, hitting 32 of 54 shots (59%) to set a new season high standard in points scored. Noah Leach made 8 of 11 shots to score 20 points to lead the offensive onslaught with Brayden Martin and Brayden Smith chipping in with 14 points each and Larsen Thomas adding 10. Taden Thomas scored seven and both Cavyn Caskey and Abel Leach finished with five. Shane Reed, Asher Shultz, Grant Williams and Payton Nomey all tallied two each as well to round out the Wolverines scoring. Nathin Wages and Dawson Clifton led Weston with eight points each while Lajavion Harris chipped in with six points and Bryce Zehr finished with four. Gunner Younse, Ashad Harris and Daniel Williams all added three points apiece.

Quitman 56 Weston 47 (girls): After spotting home standing Weston to a 9-2 lead, the Lady Wolverines came storming back to take a 19-15 first quarter advantage and never looked back to move to take sole possession of the lead in the District 1B standings. Anna Leach scored 23 points and pulled down 9 rebounds to pace the Lady Wolverines offense and Cali Deal chipped in with 19. Hallie Kate Pullig and Taylor Borland added five points each while Kinsley Ponder and Jaleigh Burns finished with two points apiece. Briley Peterson scored 22 points and pulled down 13 boards to pace the Lady Wolves. Anslee Aldy  and Carly Jo Griffin chipped in with 9 and 8 points respectively while Rachel Bandy finished with four and both Carlynn Waters and Nadia Siadek made a basket each.

Quitman Junior Varsity Girls wins two at Choudrant Tourney

The Junior Varsity girls team won a pair of games on Saturday at the Choudrant Junior Varsity Tournament. QHS opened play by beating West Ouachita 39-35 before closing out play with a 42-32 victory over the tourney host.

QHS 39 West Ouachita 35: Trailing 24-14 at the break, the scrappy Lady Wolverines turned the tables on their Class 5A opponent by taking a 25-13 second half advantage. Hallie Kate Pullig scored 19 to lead the Lady Wolverines with Allie Robertson chipping in with 8 points. Kinsley Ponder scored 7, both Breelyn Boone and Lily Jones tallied two points and Braelyn Patton hit a free throw.

Quitman 42 Choudrant 32: Hallie Kate Pullig continued her strong play by scoring 18 points and Allie Robertson chipped in with 12 as Quitman blew past the tourney host. Allie Robetson chipped in with 12 points. Kinsley Ponder added five, Braelyn Patton finished with four and K. Hall made a basket. Breelyn Boone also made a free thtow.
