Facing having to replace six starters from last year’s LHSAA Division V state championship among “non-select” schools, Quitman High School first year baseball coach, Chris Womack, new that he and his staff had a tough task in getting his 2025 squad quickly up to speed.
The “growing pains” that were expected came to fruition as Quitman lost their first four games of the year against a strong gauntlet of teams as the new players got their proverbial feet wet. Undaunted, Womack and staff continued to teach the “Wolverine Way”. A pair of one run victories in mid February against two higher division schools proved that progress was being made.
Womack was hopeful that all the kinks would be worked out by the time district 1B play came around in mid March and by the results of play this past week it looks like this new group of Wolverines has grasped one very important concept. That is how to win close games.
By virtue of their 7-6 victory over Claiborne Christian and 2-0 win over a powerful Family Community team, the Wolverines have now evened their record at 7-7 on the year, reaching the .500 mark for the first time this season.
Quitman 7 Claiborne Christian 6: Jayden Harts laid down a bunt that was misplayed allowing Asher Burns to score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Quitman the hard fought victory. The inning started with Cail King reaching base on an infield error. Burns entered as a pinch runner and promptly stole second before sprinting home on the second Claiborne Christian error of the inning. Hudson Pullig (2B, 2 RBI, RS), Jake Potts (RBI) and Conner Moak(RS) all had two hits for the Wolverines while Maddox Duck (RS, RBI, SB), King (RS, SB) and Kace West (2B) each got a hit apiece. Ayden Greer scored a run as did Tucker Newton who also stole two bases. Hayden Davis earned the win in relief of West, who allowed only one run in four innings of work.
Quitman 2 Family Community 0: Zach Smudricks fired a complete game, three hit, shut out and Ayden Greer, Cail King and Hudson Pullig all hit singles in the top of the fourth to score the only two runs of the game as Quitman took down the top ranked team in Class B in the tightly contested contest.
