Prep Baseball: Weston clips Quitman 11-8 to win District 1B Championship

Three of the season’s worst eight errors Quitman made on the day led to three Weston runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break open a tie game and vault the Wolves to the 2025 District 1B tournament championship. With the 11-8 victory, the Wolves improved to 19-9 officially overall, that doesn’t include three wins against out-of-state opponents, while Quitman fell to 14-13 on the season. 

The title game matchup between the Wolves, seeded #1 after winning all four district 1B games during the regular season and Quitman, who earned the #2 seed after going 3-1 in district play came about after both teams won in shut-out fashion in the semifinals with Weston beating Doyline 15-0 and Quitman blanking Simsboro 9-0.

District 1B Championship Game

Much like the first time the two Jackson Parish rivals met, Quitman broke on top early fell behind, then rallied to knot things up only to lose in the late stages as Weston scored the winning runs without getting the ball out of the infield. 

The go-ahead rally for the Wolves began when both Ty Henderson and Jase Borders reached base on infield errors, followed by Liam Weaver plating both with a roller to the mound that he beat out for a single.  A walk to Sawyer Watkins followed, setting up a Drew Browning grounder that was misplayed and a Cole Tolar ground ball that plated the final run. 

Quitman opened the championship game on fire to score three runs before the first out was made. Conner Moak led things off by drawing a walk, followed by Hudson Pullig and Maddox Duck stroking a double and a single, respectively, and Jake Potts reaching on an error. A second Weston error of the inning on a ground ball hit by Tucker Newton upped the lead to 4-0. 

Weston cut the lead in half in their half of the first when Browning doubled and Tolar singled with one out, leading to both taking home on a steal and a wild pitch. a walk to Borders and back to back singles by Bryce Zehr and Browning narrowed the deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the second inning.

The Wolverines opened up a 6-3 advantage in the top of the fourth, paced by Asher Shultz’s first career home run and Duck getting his second hit of the contest that  brought home Moak, who had gotten hit by a pitch and went to third on Pullig’s second consecutive double. 

Taking advantage of four Quitman errors and four walks, Weston reversed the 6-3 deficit to an 8-6 lead in the bottom o the fourth as Zehr, Browning, Colton Blundell and Henderson all reached on miscues and Gill and Borders coaxed walks and Watkins reached twice on free passes.

A single by Shultz, Moak getting hit by a pitch and consecutive walks to Pullig, Duck and Potts allowed Quitman to tie the game at 8-8 in the top of the sixth setting up Weston’s winning push in the bottom half of the frame. 

Weston 15 Doyline 0: The Wolves plated ten runs in the bottom of the third inning to put the game away early as Weston stroked 8 hits and took advantage of 15 free passes by Doyline pitching to cake walk into the championship game.

The Wolves grabbed a 3-0 lead when Sawyer Watkins and Drew Browning sandwiched two-out doubles around Bryce Zehr getting on base via an error and Cole Tolar following with a single leading to the 10 run outburst that was to come in the next inning.  

The explosive inning started with Ty Henderson walking, Jase Borders getting plunked and Liam Weaver reaching on an error. A walk to Watkins, single by Zehr, another walk to Browning and a fielders choice ground out by Tolar that scored a run followed that upped the lead to 7-0. A double by Colton Blundell, singled by Jacob Gilland five consecutive free passes by Doyline pitching pushed the lead to an insurmountable 13-0 advantage. Watkins earned the victory by limiting Doyline to just three singles over four innings. 

Quitman 9 Simsboro 0: Hudson Pullig went 2/3 with a double, drove in two and scored a run while also limiting Simsboro to just one hit over 4 2/3 innings to pace the Wolverines to the victory that propelled Quitman to the championship game. Cail King also came up big by getting two hits, including a triple and scoring a run and Asher Shutlz hit a double, scored three runs and stole two bases. Conner Moak chipped in with a double, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored and a stolen base while Maddox Duck scored a run and stole a base. Jake Potts and Ayden Greer also got a hit and knocked in a run and Jayden Harts stole two bases to contribute to the offensive onslaught. Kace West also got a hit. 


Asher Shultz hit his first career home run and drove in 5 runs for Quitman in District 1B Tourney

Tigers Hold Off Ringgold for District 1-1A Victory

Jonesboro-Hodge opened up a 14-4 lead and then held off a late rally by Ringgold to take a thrilling 15-13 District 1-1A victory this past Tuesday. With the victory, the Tigers improved to 3-4 in district play and evened their record to 8-8 overall. 

The Tigers pounded out a season-best 18 hits and stole 24 bases as a team in the revenge victory over the Redskins. Maurice Baker continued his stellar season by going 4 for 4 with a pair of doubles, drove in three runs, scored twice and stole five bases to increase his Jackson Parish leading total to 36 on the year. John LaBlance also had a big day with three hits that included a “two bagger”, stealing three bases and scoring two runs while Trey Trosclair chipped in with double and a single, scored three times and stole three bases. Waylon Evans got three hits, scored twice and drove in a pair and Landon Boston got a pair of hits, stole four bases, scored three times and had an RBI. Jeremiah Turnage also chipped in with two hits, 2 RBI, 2 steals and scored a run and Pierce Ulloa knocked in a pair, scored and stole a base.
