Jackson Parish Museum and Fine Arts Association hosts book signing

On April 3, 2025, the Jackson Parish Museum and Fine Arts Association in Jonesboro hosted a well-attended book signing event for Robert “Bob” Mann’s latest work, You Are My Sunshine: Jimmie Davis and the Biography of a Song. The event drew a large crowd of community members eager to celebrate the legacy of Jimmie Davis, a native son of Jackson Parish.

Attendees had the opportunity to meet Mann, a distinguished author known for his extensive writings on Louisiana’s political history. His new book delves into the origins and impact of the iconic song “You Are My Sunshine” and its association with Jimmie Davis, who leveraged his musical fame into a political career, serving two terms as Louisiana’s governor.

The museum, located at 515 South Cooper Avenue, serves as a repository of local history and art, with a dedicated annex honoring Jimmie Davis’s contributions. The success of this event underscores the community’s enduring pride in Davis’s legacy and highlights the museum’s role in preserving and celebrating Jackson Parish’s cultural heritage.

The Link Between Domestic Violence and Homelessness

Domestic violence is one of the leading causes of homelessness, particularly among women and children. When victims flee abusive relationships, they often face a difficult choice—stay in a dangerous situation or leave without financial stability, housing, or support. Understanding the connection between domestic violence and homelessness is crucial to developing solutions that provide safety and stability for survivors.

How Domestic Violence Leads to Homelessness

Many survivors of domestic violence become homeless due to several factors, including:
Financial Abuse: Abusers often control finances, making it difficult for victims to save money or maintain employment.
Lack of Affordable Housing: Survivors frequently struggle to find affordable, safe housing, especially if they lack rental history or financial independence.
Legal Barriers: Custody battles, restraining orders, and eviction histories can prevent survivors from securing housing.
Limited Shelter Availability: Domestic violence shelters are often at capacity, forcing survivors to seek alternative housing options, sometimes leading to homelessness.

Homelessness exposes survivors to additional risks, including:
– Increased vulnerability to further abuse or exploitation.
– Difficulty accessing healthcare, employment, and education for children.
– Emotional and psychological distress from prolonged instability.

Addressing the link between domestic violence and homelessness requires a multi-faceted approach:
1. Expanding Emergency Shelter Services – More funding for domestic violence shelters ensures survivors have a safe place to go.
2. Affordable Housing Programs – Increasing access to low-income housing and rental assistance can help survivors transition into stable living environments.
3. Financial Empowerment Initiatives – Programs that assist with job training, financial literacy, and career development enable survivors to achieve independence.
4. Stronger Legal Protections – Policies that prevent landlords from discriminating against domestic violence survivors and ensure workplace protections can help reduce homelessness.
5. Community Awareness and Advocacy – Raising awareness about the connection between domestic violence and homelessness can lead to increased funding and resources.

No one should have to choose between safety and a place to live. By recognizing the connection between domestic violence and homelessness, communities can work together to provide survivors with the resources they need to rebuild their lives.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence and is at risk of homelessness, seeking support from local shelters and advocacy groups can be the first step toward safety and stability.

Purple Martins, Harbingers of Spring

The first day of Spring, March 20, is a special day for folks around these parts who are dog tired of winter. Although we don’t have winters like our friends up north, we still have to contend with drab landscapes, an occasional frost, cold rains and incessant wind. However, the calendar says it’s spring so we have reason to celebrate.

Already our hardwood trees have fresh green leaves and lawns are escaping the dull gray of winter and now are begging to be mowed. My huckleberry bushes are sporting little green berries that in a few weeks will turn to a shiny purple, ready for being converted into cobblers and jam.

The thing though that really shouts SPRING are the sounds you hear from high above, the lilting twitter of purple martins as they prepare to delight homeowners who have martin boxes. Nothing is quite so soothing and enjoyable as sitting on the porch as martins bring spring mornings into a cacophony of song, flit and glitter.

At least that’s the case for homeowners, like Choudrant’s Dick and Trish Albritton, who are blessed with bird houses full of nesting purple martins. Some of us, namely yours truly, seem to have some sort of anti-martin pox. They just flat refuse to nest in boxes I have for years prepared for them.

When I was growing up, having purple martins nest in their yards was a no brainer. Here’s something I wrote years ago that describes it….”When I was growing up out on the rural route, we had martins, the town drunk had martins, people who never took baths and let their kids teeth rot had martins. They were not something you wished for; they were something you had. They weren’t persnickety either. You’d stick something up on a pole and they’d build a nest in it.”

I visited with the Albritton’s recently and Dick shared some information about how he and Trish attract martins. “I have 50-60 boxes plus gourds up in our yard and we have over 50 martins here now” he said. “My boxes formerly had round entrance holes that martins used but starlings did too, and that was a problem. My boxes now have smaller rectangle holes martins have no trouble entering; yet they’re too small for starlings.”

An on-line site about these birds described them this way… “Renowned for their chattering songs, aerial acrobatics, insect eating habits and tolerance of humans they stand as one of America’s most cherished songbirds.”

There are other characteristics of purple martins that Albritton has observed. “Fledglings will return to the spot, often to the same cubicle this spring where they were hatched last year. Also,” he added, “purple martins like to be close to humans so it’s important that their houses need to be 60-100 feet from where people live. There needs to be a water source such as a pond and power lines for perching nearby. They start arriving by late February and begin leaving around mid-July.”

Part of the Albritton’s success with attracting purple martins involves quite a bit of work. “I will lower the boxes before birds begin arriving to clean them out, place a handful of straw in each cubicle before raising the boxes.”

Since my luck in attracting martins seems to be at zero, Dick and Trish Albritton may have to become accustomed to looking out the window and see an old fellow sitting on their porch to watch the birds do what they do. If I can’t have birds in my yard, surely they won’t mind sharing them with me.

Oh by the way, if your coffee pot is perking, I like mine dark with a bit of cream.

“A few of Dick and Trish Albritton’s 50-60 purple martin houses.” – Glynn Harris photo

The Southern Plainsman Quartet to be at Friendship Baptist Church on Sunday

The Southern Plainsman Quartet will be in concert at the Friendship Baptist Church located on LA Hwy 4 West in Bienville Parish at  6:00 pm on Sunday, April 13th. All are welcome to attend. For more information, you can call 318-243-5266.

Featuring Quitman native, Tim Thomas, The Southern Plainsmen Quartet was organized in May 1978 in the rolling pine hills of West-Central Louisiana and is an outreach of the Southern Plainsmen Ministries, Inc., a non-profit Christian organization.

The ministry, supported by the contributions of its Christian friends, appears in Christian churches regardless of denominational affiliation on an expense plus freewill-love-offering basis.

Ponderings……

The other day I counted the words that I have created, these were either spoken words, or words like this article. In the 43 years of ministry, I have produced 15,000,000 words! You knew that preachers talked too much, now you have proof.

That number includes articles, 10 years of writing Sunday School materials, sermons, weddings, funerals, and the ever-present “come speak to our group” events. I handle lots of words! The majority of those words had something to do with Jesus!

The Gospel of John (21:25) states that if everything Jesus did were written down, “I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.”

That is certainly a statement of hyperbole, right? Jesus lived 33 years on this earth. We have an extensive record of what he did during his three-year public ministry. Sounds like the gospel writer was exaggerating for effect, right?

Most scholars believe that Jesus was crucified between 27-33 A.D. There is no way of determining the exact date, but we know his life came to an end on the cross. We are also preparing to celebrate Easter. The good news that the tomb is empty because; He is risen!

Since he is risen from the dead, and now intercedes for us with the Father, since the Holy Spirit dwells in each one of us, Jesus is still “doing things” in our world and in the lives of individuals. The books would never catch up with what Jesus is doing, because He is ahead of the books.

Right now, as you read, He is working in your life. Now as you read, He offers you love and grace. In this moment, He whispers to your soul, “Follow me.” Jesus is walking the life pathway with all his children, through the Spirit. The books will never catch up with the powerful presence of Jesus in the life of the church and in the individual lives of believers.

The words of your life story are not complete, because Jesus, the Word made flesh is still working in you and through you.

Jesus keeps working in me and I share those words through writing and speaking. His Word is not finished in my life, yours either.

That is a good word!

Jonesboro-Hodge Methodist Church to hold “Good Friday” Service on April 18th

Each spring, families around the world celebrate Easter in a secular way, enjoying a visit from the Easter Bunny, receiving treat-filled baskets, and hunting decorated eggs. For practicing Christians, Easter Sunday, which this year will fall on April 20th, carries a much more spiritual meaning as it represents the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

Two days before is known as “Good Friday”, the holy day that commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus. Pastor Gary Green and the congregation of Jonesboro-Hodge Methodist Church, located at 402 Cooper Avenue in Jonesboro, invite you to reflect with them on the sacrifice Jesus made of dying for our sins by joining in a special “Good Friday” service at 5:30 pm on April 18th.

“Nils Olav’s First Day”

by Brad Dison

Each year since 1950, people have gathered at Scotland’s Edinburgh Castle Esplanade in August for the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Not to be confused with soldiers having ink inserted into the dermis layer of skin, a military tattoo is a festival consisting of music, dancing, and general merrymaking focused on Scottish heritage and international culture. The most anticipated portion of the festival consists of numerous precision military displays.

Since 1961, His Majesty The King’s Guard of Norway, an elite unit tasked with protecting the Norwegian royal family, has participated in the military displays. In August 1972, while in Scotland for the Tattoo, the Royal Norwegian King’s Guard added another soldier to its regimental ranks. On that day, Nils Olav became a lance corporal, a rank which usually requires long or outstanding service to attain. It was Nils’s first day.

His first duty as a soldier was to inspect his troops, a duty he performed with the confidence and skill of someone with much more experience. Nils proudly wore a pennant of the prestigious King’s Guard around his right arm. Most soldiers would have resented a newcomer reaching such a rank without earning it, but no one resented Nils. You see, Nils Olav’s family had deep Scandinavian roots, and he was, himself, a king.

Nils may have been given the rank of lance corporal on his first day, but promotions came slowly at first. In 1982, after 10 years as a lance corporal, Nils received his first promotion when he was made a full corporal. Five years later, he became a sergeant. In 1993, during that year’s Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Nils was promoted to regimental sergeant major. Nils’s promotion and his inspection of his troops was televised in Norway and throughout much of Europe.

Nils became somewhat of a celebrity Europe, though most people in America were unaware of his rising fame. In 2001, during a ceremony at the Tattoo in which Nils was awarded the Norwegian Army’s Long Service and Good Conduct medal, the Royal Norwegian Guard promoted him to colonel-in-chief. On the morning of August 15, 2008, Nils’s fellow soldiers gathered for Nils’s knighting ceremony. He has been known as Sir Nils Olav ever since. He eventually rose to the rank of brigadier.

If you are able to watch the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo this Fall, you will probably see Sir Nils Olav’s inspection of the troops. He has done it each year since 1972. But if you were to look closely at photos of Sir Nils through the years, you might notice minute differences in his appearance. You must have a keen eye to notice. In 1987, Nils Olav died and was replaced by a lookalike. He looked so much like Nils Olav that no one noticed. When the lookalike died some years later, he was replaced by yet another lookalike who continued his work in the military as if nothing had happened.

Why did news outlets around the world not pounce on the story which should have captured our attention? You see, Sir Nils Olav is a king…a three foot tall king penguin. He lives at the Edinburgh Zoo and is the mascot for the Royal Norwegian King’s Guard.

Daily Devotional by Pam Ford Davis

Where Are They?

It’s not hard to find a church; many are within walking distance.

Will we find more people to fill them?

“This is the church

This is the steeple.

Open the doors,

See all the people!” *author unknown

Teaching me to interlock my fingers; Mom repeatedly voiced the children’s rhyme.

It’s time for a rewrite…

“This is the church

This is the steeple.

Open the doors,

Where are all the people?”

That’s a good question; where are they?

They certainly aren’t packing many rural church pews; mourning sins at a mourner’s bench or bringing their burdens to the altar. Instead, they choose to forsake assembling at the local church.

… “not forsaking our meeting together [as believers for worship and instruction], as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more [faithfully] as you see the day [of Christ’s return] approaching (Hebrews 10:25 AMP).”

Where are all the people?

Where will you be Sunday morning?

Freida (Capps) Peel
July 24, 1959 – April 6, 2025

Freida Capps Peel, 65, of Chatham, Louisiana walked through heaven’s gates straight into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, April 6, 2025 after a brief illness. She was born on July 24, 1959 to Fred and Jonny (Nalley) Capps and they raised her in Eros, La. Freida graduated from Bethel High School and went on to NLU where she received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Elementary Education. She attended Chatham Community Church where she was a faithful member for many years. Freida was a talented pianist and singer and used her talents to serve her Lord faithfully from the time she was a child. Serving in different music ministries with her husband for over 40 years was her joy and she used her gifts to serve and witness to others whenever she could.

Freida loved being the best Nana to her grandbabies that she could possibly be and spent as much time as she could, supporting and nurturing them. Blueberry muffins were a staple at her house and she loved to bake with her babies. She never missed an event for anyone in her family and loved us so well, but her favorite person was the love of her life, Danny. They spent countless hours going on dates and enjoying their time together. She would often say how much she “loved that man”. Freida was an avid reader and loved spending time at home journaling, cooking, and having fun with her family. Her laugh was contagious and it was one of her family’s favorite things about her. It was a common sight to see her paddling around the pond in her little boat, the Jewel, trying to catch as many bream as she possibly could. Freida also loved the North Louisiana Emaus family like they were her own and devoted so much time to their ministry.

Those left behind that will always cherish her memory are her husband of 44 years, Danny Elton Peel; children, Hillary Peel Aulds and Robert of Chatham, La, Daniel Peel and Ashley of West Monroe, La; grandchildren, Harper Aulds, Nora Peel, and Lily Peel; sister-in-law, Doris Capps; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred Jewel and Jonny Mae (Nalley) Capps; brother, Freddie Joe Capps.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 9 at Chatham Community Church with Sis. Lala Ball and Bro. Lynn Malone officiating. Burial followed in Salem Cemetery in Eros, under the direction of Southern-Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the first responders that helped our family. We will never forget what you did for us.

“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die…” John 11:25-26.

J-Hodge falls to Union

Jonesboro-Hodge got out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning but Union Parish erupted for 9 runs in their half of the frame on the way to a 12-4 decision in girls softball play on Friday. The loss against the Division III opponent dropped the Lady Tigers overall record to 2-7 while Union Parish improved to 3-9 on the year.
The Lady Tigers got on top in the first following when Alaina Ashcraft stole home after she and K Aaron stroked two out singles and Sierra Bond walked to load the bases. JHHS added three more runs in the top of the second when S Dill, B Thompson and A Anderson all walked and Ashcraft hit a single.

Up Next: JHHS dips back into district 1-1A play on Tuesday, when they host Ringgold at 4:00 pm at the Lady Tigers field, located on Thrasher Avenue in Jonesboro.

Late Quitman rally comes up short against Oak Grove

Doubles by Hallie Kate Pullig, her third of the game, Cali Deal and Kinsley Ponder and a single by Briley Bowers helped Quitman score two runs in the top of the 7th inning but homestanding Oak Grove held on for the 7-5 victory by stranding Lady Wolverine runners on second and third base.

The loss was the 4th in the last 7 games for Quitman against a murderers row of opponents that included #1 and #3 ranked teams in Division IV and the 3rd and 4th ranked team in Division III and dropped the Lady Wolverines record to 16-6 on the year.

Four straight hits, including doubles by Pullig, Maggie Guyotte and Ponder that sandwiched a single by Deal paced Quitman to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first but Oak Grove methodically rallied by scoring two runs in the first and fourth innings and single runs in the second, third and fifth frame.

Next Up: The schedule doesn’t get any easier as Quitman will hit the road again on Monday and Tuesday to play West Ouachita and Benton, the 6th and 2nd ranked teams in Division I among “non – select” schools.

Wolves post “double digits” for 5th game in a row

The second ranked school in Class B scored in double digits for the fifth straight game to win going away 18-2 against Beekman Charter on Friday. The victory improved the Wolves record to 15-8 according to the LHSAA which doesn’t count the three victories Weston has taken against out of state team this year and takes some of the sting out of the 14-10 loss to West Ouachita, the #4 ranked team in Division II, on Thursday.

Weston 18 Beekman Charter 2: A season best 16 run explosion in the bottom of the third ended the game in three innings as Colton Blundell smashed two home runs and both Drew Browning and Cole Tolar hit “round trippers” to help capitalize on the 15 free passes given up by Beekman Charter pitching. It was a complete team as other than the three above who combined for 10 runs and 9 RBI’s, Sawyer Watkins, Jase Borders and Bryce Zehr scored twice and both Jacob Gill and Ty Henderson scored a run each. Beaux Oliver took the win.

West Ouachita 14 Weston 10 (Thursday) – After spotting West Ouachita 6-1 and 8-4 leads in the first two innings, the Wolves closed the gap to just a one run deficit only to see the Chiefs score six in a frame for the second time in the game in the bottom of the fourth inning to put the game out of reach. The Wolves blasted West Ouachita pitching for 14 hits led by Jacob Gill’s career day of 4 RBI, paced by a home run and a double. Cole Tolar also came up big going 3/4 with a double while Bryce Zehr and Drew Browning hit “two baggers’ and scored two runs each. Ty Henderson chipped in with two hits and two runs scored and both Colton Blundell and Liam Weaver scored a run apiece.

Next Up! The Wolves will look to clinch their second straight district 1B title on Monday, when they travel to Doyline. Weston will then host Claiborne Christian on Tuesday with both games scheduled to begin at 5:00 pm.

Wolverines get back to .500 with win over Claiborne Christian

Quitman scored two runs in the top of the fifth and added three more in the top of the sixth inning to rally from a 1-0 deficit that evens the Wolverines overall record at 12-12. Kace West got the win after limiting the Crusaders to just one earned run in five innings of work.

Quitman took a 2-1 lead when Connor Moak and Hudson Pullig scored with two outs after both reached base via a walk and getting hit by a pitch, Tucker Newton singled and CCA made errant pickoff attempt that got away. The Wolverines upped the lead to the final 5-1 margin in the top of the sixth when Kace West and Maddox Duck walked, Cail King singled, Remi Upshaw reached on CCA’s third error of the game and Zach Smudricks singled leading to Hudson Pullig hitting a sacrifice fly.

Next Up! The Wolverines will travel to Simsboro for a 5:30 pm contest on Tuesday with the winner securing second place in district 1B.

Local schools Quitman High and Weston High School also were part of the 15 schools that participated with QHS earning podium spots for first, second or third place finishes ten times and Weston having three earn top three spots.

Nathan Harvey and Connor Davis won gold medals for the Wolverines in the 110 meter hurdles and the discus competition, while Asher Shultz took second in the javelin, joining the boys 4×400 and 4×800 relay teams as silver medal winners. Kaleigh King won a pair of bronze medals in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles respectively as did Megan Kelly in the 1600 meter run on the girls side while Mathew Odom (3200 meters) and the 4×200 relay team grabbed third place finishes in boys competition.

Glynn Harris Outdoors and Fishing Report

Bitten By A Blue Tooth

(I was going through some of my columns I have written over the years and came across this one I wrote 15 or so years ago. I had to chuckle and thought I’d share it again with my readers.) – Glynn

I was headed into the grocery store when this nice looking fellow walked up beside me and commented, “This is some beautiful weather we’re having.”

“Beautiful; absolutely beautiful. With this nice weather, the bluegills ought to be on the beds,” I replied.

“What are your plans for today?” he asked.

“Well, I’d like to go try the bluegills but I have this magazine article I’m working on,” I replied, casting a wary eye toward this too-friendly stranger.

“Honey, did you want me to get whole grain or wheat bread?” he said as he abruptly turned down an aisle, leaving me standing there slack-jawed and wondering just what sort of weirdo this guy was.

Then I saw it; he was walking with his left side to me but when he turned, I saw this doo-hickey sticking out of his right ear. It was a Blue Tooth.

He didn’t care if I was working on an article nor did he give a hoot that the bluegills were bedding. He probably didn’t hear my answers and comments with his attention focused on “honey” and a loaf of bread.

Ever since that day when I embarrassed myself answering questions that weren’t directed to me, I’ve frankly been annoyed anytime I see somebody walking around wearing a dad-blasted Blue Tooth.

First of all, how does the thing work? I mean, you’re not talking into it; the receiver is way over there at the edge of your sideburns. How do you dial the thing? When somebody calls, does it ring in your ear? If you’re busy testing your spark plugs and your Blue Tooth rings, wouldn’t it make you jump and slam your head against the car hood? How do you answer it and how do you hang it up after a call? I always thought that only smart alecks used Blue Teeth and wore them in public for the sole purpose of annoying me.

Then it happened. I had a birthday a couple of weeks later and among my gifts was one from my daughter, Kayla. I opened the package to find she’d given me, you guessed it, a Blue Tooth.

I set it aside for several days, recalling every reason I didn’t like those things, especially how ridiculous it looks when a grown man is walking around the grocery store talking to the air or himself or his guardian angel or somebody unseen.

A few days later, I cautiously picked it up and looked it over. It seemed harmless enough all curled up in my hand. Checking around the house to be sure nobody was looking, I inserted the battery, turned it on like the instructions said and stuck it in my ear. Nothing doing; I couldn’t make it stay; it kept falling off.

The more times it fell to the floor, the more determined I was to make it work, so following the instructions, I turned it on. I picked up our house phone and called my cell phone to see what would happen. My cell phone rang; the Blue Tooth just sat there dangling precariously from my ear like it needed a root canal.

Determined, I drove down to the office of the company that has my cell phone service, the technician mashed a couple of buttons on my phone and the Tooth and declared it ready. I jammed it into my left ear, and it promptly fell out.

“Wrong ear; it’s supposed to go in your right ear,” the friendly technician said, stifling a snicker.

So if you see me walking around town talking to myself, stop me, turn me around and look in both ears. Chances are, I’m Blue Toothing.
