This past Sunday, May 11th, Tay’Vionne Tate went to be with the Lord at the young age of 26 years old. A public viewing was held for the 2018 Jonesboro-Hodge High School graduate on Friday, May 16th at Union Star Missionary Baptist Church in Jonesboro with his Celebration of Life service taking place on Saturday, May 17th at the Shady Grove High School Gymnasium in Saline, LA. Donald Perry Shields
February 9, 1951 – May 13, 2025

Donald Perry Shields, affectionately known as Big Don, Dad, Mr. Shields, the plant guru, and most proudly, Papaw, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2025, in Shreveport, Louisiana, at the age of 74. A resident of Weston, Louisiana, Don was surrounded by the people he loved most and who loved him deeply as he transitioned to his eternal home.

Born on February 9, 1951, in Hodge, Louisiana, Don lived a life rooted in faith, family, hard work, and heartfelt connection. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Johnette Faye Avery Shields; and his parents, James Perry Shields and Willene Shovan Shields.

He is survived by his children, Derek Shields and wife Melea, and Rebecca Shields; grandson, James Hamilton Shields; siblings, Randy Shields, Joey Shields and wife Cindy, and Denise Baker; and a host of nieces, nephews, former students, and cherished friends.

Don earned both his Bachelor of Science in Horticulture and a Master’s of Science in Education from Louisiana Tech University. After graduating in 1963, he began his career at Flowerwood Nursery near Mobile, Alabama, before returning home to establish Shields Nursery in Quitman. There, he became well-known for his expertise in Hibiscus and Bougainvillea. In 1984, following his marriage, he relocated the nursery to Weston, where he continued his horticultural work before beginning his teaching career.

Don found his calling as an educator. He began teaching at Downsville High School and later served as the Agriculture teacher at Jonesboro-Hodge High School from 1999 until his retirement in 2017. He took great pride in mentoring students and sharing his knowledge and love of agriculture, and he always enjoyed hearing from and talking with his former students.

Don lived life to the fullest, embracing every opportunity for joy. He loved playing guitar, hunting, attending concerts, enjoying the outdoors, and, above all, spending time with family and friends. He had a deep appreciation for good food, good company, and meaningful conversation.

Though we will deeply miss his wisdom, his laughter, and his ever-present love, we take comfort in knowing that Don is reunited with his loved ones and that he has been made whole again. His life was a life well-lived, full of purpose, generosity, and warmth.

Visitation will be held on Friday, May 16, 2025, at Antioch Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Quitman, Louisiana. The Funeral service took place on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at the same location with Chris Bennett and Randy Dark officiating.  Interment followed at Antioch Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery under the direction of Paradise Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Joey Pender, Phillip Walker, Bob Davis, Tim Smith, Wesley Horton, Bennie Anderson, Josh Wilhite with Honorary Pallbearers being Bill Ortego, Wayne Nash, and Randy Stevenson.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Antioch Graveyard Fund at Hodge Bank. The family extends heartfelt thanks for your continued prayers, love, and support during this time.

Fred Miller Thomas Jr.

Two Injured and One Killed in Fatal Jackson Parish Crash

(Troop F – Louisiana State Police Report)

Vernon – On Sunday, May 11, 2025, shortly before 12:00 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop F began investigating a two-vehicle crash on Riser Road just north of LA Highway 148. The crash claimed the life of 26-year-old Tayvionne Tate of Jonesboro.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by 25-year-old Janihajious Phillips, was traveling north on Riser Road. At the same time, a 2024 Nissan Versa was traveling south on Riser Road. For reasons still under investigation, Phillips veered left, crossed over the center line, and struck the Nissan head-on in the southbound lane of Riser Road.

Tate, who was the front seat passenger in the Malibu and unrestrained, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. Phillips, who was unrestrained, received serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital. The driver of the Nissan, who was properly restrained, received serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital. Impairment is a suspected factor in this crash. Routine toxicology samples were collected and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Police would like to remind all motorists that impaired driving and failure to wear a seatbelt can have deadly consequences. If you feel differently, you drive differently. Alcohol, prescription medications, and other drugs can impair your ability to safely operate a vehicle by affecting vision, judgment, coordination, and reaction time.

In addition, choosing not to wear a seatbelt greatly increases the risk of serious injury or death in a crash. Motorists are urged to make responsible decisions. Always drive sober, always buckle up, and always plan ahead.

Weston falls to Family Community Christian in Class B baseball semi-finals

Family Community Christian School (FCCS) scored two runs in the third and another in the fourth and seventh innings to break open a 2-2 tie and beat Weston High 6-2 in the LHSAA Class B semi-finals on Tuesday. The loss ends the District 1B champion and #2 seed Wolves’ season with a 21-11 record while #3 seed, FCCS, improves to 23-12 and advances to play top-seeded Pitkin on Thursday for the Class B title.

After spotting FCCS two runs in the top of the first inning, the Wolves cut the deficit in half in their at-bat when Drew Browning singled and Cole Tolar slashed a double to give runners on second and third, setting the stage for Colton Blundell driving in a run with a ground out.

The Wolves tied the score in the bottom of the second when Ty Henderson opened the frame with a single and was brought home by Jase Borders double to left field. Weston had a chance to take the lead, but Borders was thrown out at the plate on a suicide bunt attempt, followed by the Wolves leaving the bases loaded after Bryce Zehr drew a walk and Browning singled for his second hit in two innings.

Trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Weston made a charge when Borders and Liam Weaver walked, and Zehr singled with one out to load the bases only to have bad luck strike as Browning hit a scorching liner to shortstop that turned into a double play allowing FCCS to squelch the rally attempt.

Weston threatened to score again in the bottom of the fifth when Colton Blundell smashed a one-out triple to right, but once again, FCCS escaped without giving up any runs when he was tagged out at home attempting to score on a ground ball to third base.

Showing their “never say die” attitude, the Wolves loaded the bases one more time in the bottom of the seventh inning with one out following Cole Tolar getting hit by a pitch, Blundell singling, and Jacob Gill drawing a walk, bringing the tying run to the plate. As had been the story all game, FCCS once again came away unscathed by coaxing two fly outs, leaving the bases loaded full of Wolves and running the total to runners left on base to 11 over the seven innings.

Weston High School Class of 1972 enjoys first ever reunion

Weston High School Class of 1972

The year was 1972. Richard Nixon was re-elected President of the United States and then scandalized by Watergate. The Munich Olympics massacre occurred, as did the last Apollo moon mission. Volkswagen’s newest production, “The Bug,” became the rage among auto owners. The video game PONG was first put on the market, McDonald’s introduced the Egg McMuffin and maxi dresses, mini skirts, and knee socks ruled women’s and girls’ fashion choices

It was also the year that 23 seniors from Weston High School walked across the stage to receive their diplomas.

Why is that something of interest, you ask?

This past Saturday, May 10th, fifteen members of the Class of ’72 held a reunion, enjoying the opportunity to reminisce and talk about those “good ole days.” What makes the gathering so special is that this is the first reunion the class has ever had.

Old stories, memories and recollection ruled the day as even though it has been 53 years since they have gotten together as a class it seemed like yesterday once they all got together again.

Kudo’s to the Weston High School Alumni Association for helping make such a wonderful event happen.

Better late than never!

JHMS and JHHS Bands Receives Grant To Purchase Instruments

JJHMS band director, Mr. Trey Porchay, and band students with instruments purchased with the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation Grant Funds.

The Jackson Parish School Board received $4,000.00 from the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation – Education in Schools Grant. The grant was written to help enhance the current start-up of the Band Programs at Jonesboro-Hodge Middle School and Jonesboro-Hodge High School.

Grant funds were used to purchase the following musical instruments: (2) Bass Drums, Performance Series Trombone, Piccolo Flute, Tambourine, (2) Wooden Maracas, Meinl Percussion Sound Turbo Guiro, (2) Large Wooden Afuche/Cabasas, and an Instrument Stand. These instruments will help ensure that students will gain musical knowledge through instruction on quality instruments.

This program is supported in part by an Arts Education grant from the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, Inc.

Mr. Trey Porchay has been the Band Director in Jackson Parish since 2023. He currently teaches Band, Marching Band, and Beginning Choir, where his focus is for students to sing, play instruments, read music, and march in formation. Under Mr. Prochay’s leadership, participation in these music programs has increased from 40 students last year to 59 for the 2024-2025 academic school year.

JHHS students Trinity Davis and Aspen Atkins are very proud of the new drums.

J-H Elementary School receives Organization for Autism Research grant

Jonesboro-Hodge Elementary School has received the Organization for Autism Research (OAR Foundation) grant for the 2024-2025 academic school year. OAR’s mission is centered on improving the quality of life for individuals on the Autism spectrum and those who support them.

The elementary school program was called Creating Change through Awareness and was designed to educate administrators, teachers, parents, and students about autism spectrum disorders. The goal is to increase student awareness and acceptance of their peers with autism. OAR supplied peer education materials (Kit for Kids) filled with educational activities and projects for students.

J-HES principal, Ms. Danielle Copeland, committed to focusing on this initiative the entire school year for its pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade student body.

Activities included:
• A Faculty In-Service Lunch and Learn workshop where teachers were given information about the program;
• Equipping each grade-level teacher with a Kit for Kids;
• Selecting a “Peer Mentor” from each class every nine weeks to promote kindness and support classmates;
• Providing students with opportunities to present the information to parents and community leaders;
• Partnering with the Jackson Parish Sheriff’s Office to support their “Friends of Jackson Parish” initiative;
• Encouraging students to speak at various meetings about what they have learned;
• Organizing opportunities for students to create and participate in “Kindness Events”.
• Holding a school-wide, week-long dress-up event in recognition of Autism Awareness Week.

“Overdue Books”

Public libraries are important to our communities because they provide free access to all the world’s recorded knowledge. Public libraries promote education and literacy in safe and welcoming environments to people of all ages, backgrounds, and social class. We, as citizens, have a responsibility to return the books we borrow by a set date, or we will face the shame of returning an overdue book.

In April 2010, Mark Bartlett, head librarian at the New York Society Library, noticed that two books checked out by the same person had not been returned. According to the library records, George checked out two books on October 5, and the books were due back on November 2. On October 15, ten days after checking out the books, George had to travel for work. He was a salesman of sorts who was trying to rally support for an idea rather than a tangible product. He referred to it as a promotional tour. He left New York City and, over the next two weeks, visited factories and farms in nearly 60 towns in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. George, then 57 years old, hoped the trip would improve his health. He had gotten sick during the summer and was not recovering as quickly as he had expected.

The fines on George’s overdue books began accruing on November 3. When George returned to New York on November 13, he failed to return the books. Perhaps his health did not improve as he had hoped. Perhaps he was exhausted by the whirlwind trip. Maybe he simply forgot. When the head librarian learned of the overdue books, he sent a letter to George’s home address about the overdue books. But there was a problem. By the time the library learned of the overdue books, George had died. In their correspondence with James Rees, representative of George’s estate, Mark asked if they could try to locate the overdue books. Mark explained, “We’re not actively pursuing the overdue fines, but we would be very happy if we were able to get the books back.”

Despite his best efforts, James was unable to locate the books. As a last resort to rectify the situation, James decided to replace the books. But there was another problem. The books had become rare. In May 2010, James found a copy of one of the overdue books, The Law of Nations, on a rare books website, made the purchase, and gave it to the library. The price of replacing just that one overdue library book was $12,000. James is still searching for a copy of the other overdue book. $12,000 is a huge sum to pay to replace a library book, but the representative of George’s estate got off light. Had the library not been so forgiving, the fines would have totaled around $300,000.

You see, in April 2010, the librarian learned that the books were overdue by 221 years. They had been checked out on October 5 and were due back on November 2, 1789. George, the salesman who traveled throughout New England, was rallying support for the United States Constitution. On the ledger which recorded the name of the person who checked out the books was written by quill and ink, not George, but “President.” George Washington had been President of the United States for less than six months when he checked the books out.

Death Notices

James William Wright Sr.
January 19, 1933 – May 11, 2025

Mr. James William Wright Sr., of Goldonna, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2025, at the age of 92.

Born on January 19, 1933, James lived a vibrant and adventurous life filled with passion, hard work, and joy. A proud veteran, he served his country with distinction, dedicating four years to the United States Navy and twelve years to the United States Air Force.

Following his military service, James wore many hats throughout his life. He was a talented painter, a beloved local store owner in Brewton’s Mill—famous for his ice cream—and a spirited carnival worker who brought joy to many. He even created his own corn dog recipe, which became a crowd favorite at his well-known Jim’s Weenie Wagon in Atlanta, Georgia.

James was a true social butterfly who never met a stranger. He had a zest for life, loved to travel, and left an impression wherever he went with his warm heart and generous spirit.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Dorothy Louise Wright; and his four brothers, Don Wright, Gerald Wright, Stanley Wright, and David Wright.

Left to cherish his memory are his sons, James Wright Jr. (Jenny) and Edward Wright (Helen), both of Goldonna, LA; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Peggy Grossi (Sam) of Greenville, MS, and Molly Young of Mobile, AL; his dear friend Glennie Chadwick; and a special niece, Barbara Sue Makamson.

James will be remembered for his joyful soul, his creative spirit, and the many lives he touched along the way. He leaves behind a legacy of service, laughter, and love.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 14th at the Church of Christ in Jonesboro with the Celebration of Life service immediately following. Interment will be at Antioch Cemetery Ward 10 in Brewton’s Mill, LA under the direction of Paradise Funeral Home

Happy Mother’s Day!

This Sunday, May 11th is Mother’s Day and the Jackson Parish Journal joins all in wishing all Mothers a very happy day.

What Is Mother’s Day?

Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele, but the clearest modern precedent for Mother’s Day is the early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday.”

Once a major tradition in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, this celebration fell on the fourth Sunday in Lent and was originally seen as a time when the faithful would return to their “mother church”—the main church in the vicinity of their home—for a special service.

Over time the Mothering Sunday tradition shifted into a more secular holiday, and children would present their mothers with flowers and other tokens of appreciation. This custom eventually faded in popularity before merging with the American Mother’s Day in the 1930s and 1940s.

Mother’s Day began with Anna Jarvis in 1908, with the first official celebration held on May 10th in West Virginia and Philadelphia. It became a national holiday in the United States in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation establishing it.

Did you know?

More phone calls are made on Mother’s Day than any other day of the year. These holiday chats with Mom often cause phone traffic to spike by as much as 37 percent.
