Over the past two school years, Quitman High School has achieved success in its athletic program that has never been seen before at the school and is unparalleled in Jackson Parish sports history.
Home of champions! In 2023-24, QHS won LHSAA state championships in baseball, golf, and softball and followed that up with two more state titles in softball and boys’ track in 2024-25. That doesn’t even include the top five finishes in golf and girls’ track this year, along with both the girls’ and boys basketball teams reaching the Class B quarterfinals.
Recently, the distinguished cast of the K104 Downs Law Friday Night Scoreboard Show in Monroe who specializes in covering high school athletics compared all the athletic achievements of both public and private schools in northeast Louisiana based upon only the 2024-25 school year.
“We have crunched the numbers – studied all the sports giving more weight to the more popular sports like football, basketball and baseball for example, analyzed the quality and depth of competition and looked at which sports each school participates in and ranked the top 10 athletic local schools for the 2024-25 school year.” – K104 Downs Law Friday Night Scoreboard Show Facebook Post
After all the results were tabulated, Quitman High School was found to have the best athletic program among all “small schools” (Class B & C) and ranked third overall among all schools regardless of classification.
To be such a successful athletic program, it takes more than great athletes and coaches, but also a dedicated commitment to excellence by the school administration.
Leading the charge at Quitman High School has been Principal Billy Carter, a former coach of the Wolverines boys basketball team, who fully understands the role that athletics plays in a student’s development. He also knows how important it is to have coaches of great character on the staff to help bring out the full potential of a student/athlete so that they will be best prepared for their next stage in life.
“This is a tremendous testament to the incredible dedication of our student-athletes and coaching staff and I couldn’t be prouder,” said Carter. “Not just of our athletic accomplishments, but of the character and heart that our kids and coaches bring every day.”
“Our coaches are doing far more than building strong teams—they’re developing outstanding young women and men who are prepared to make our world a better place. I’ve even had hotel managers go out of their way to praise the character, politeness, and respect shown by our athletes on the road. That says everything about who they are. Stay strong, Quitman. You make us proud!”
