
The baseball and softball teams from Quitman and Weston Junior High Schools have all gotten off to a fast start in their FALL BALL schedule with the four teams combining for a sparkling 13-2 record made even more impressive by the fact that the only two losses taken were against each other.
Leading the way is the Quitman Jr. High baseball blue team, which sports a 4-0 record that includes a thrilling 4-3 victory over Weston, which stands at 3-1 on the season. On the girls’ side, Weston sits at 3-1 after opening the season with a loss to Choudrant and then reeling off three wins in a row while Quitman has a 2-1 mark, the only loss being to Weston.
Quitman Baseball
Quitman 6 Calvin 4 (Sept. 29th) – After spotting Calvin a two-run lead in the first inning, the Wolverines stormed back to score 5 in the bottom of the second to pave the way to the season-opening victory. Noah Spillman got the rally started by drawing a walk, taking second on a wild pitch and stealing third before scoring on Aiden Reed’s groundout to first. The Wolverines added four more with two outs when Jackson Ables doubled for QJH’s first extra base hit of the year and Shepard Norred walked. Both scored on wild pitches to give Quitman a 3-1 lead that set up runs scored by Thatcher Savage and Mason Thomas who had singled and walked. Jake Moak singled in the bottom of the third and stole second and scored on wild pitches for the final run. Reed got the win after three innings of work while Spillman earned the save.
Quitman 8 Downsville 4 (Oct. 2nd) The Wolverines plated 5 in the top of the first and followed that up with 3 more in the third to set a new early-season high in runs scored. Hayden Seymore led QJH with two hits, an RBI, and a run scored, including the team’s first triple of the year, while Mason Thomas, Aiden Reed, and Jackson Ables all scored two runs each. Jake Moak also scored a run and drove one in. Seymore, Thomas, Thatcher Savage, and Hayden Essmeier all pitched one inning each to combine for 8 strikeouts.
Quitman 4 Castor 3 (Oct. 3rd) QJH scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to overcome a 3-1 deficit, leading to their third straight season-opening win. The winning rally started with singles by Mason Thomas and Hayden Seymore, both of whom scored twice in the contest, which was followed by a triple by Jake Moak that tied the score at 3-3 before he scored the game winner on a groundout by Noah Spillman, who led QJH with 2 RBI in the game. With two innings of work where he struck out four, Aiden Reed got the win after coming in for Hayden Seymore who struck out six in two innings of work to keep Quitman close after Castor had scored 3 in the first two innings.
Quitman 4 Weston 3 (Oct. 7th) Aiden Reed opened the bottom of the fifth with a double and scored on a misplayed grounder hit by Noah Spillman to give Quitman the thrilling victory in the battle of Jackson Parish teams. Quitman jumped out to an early 3-0 lead when Jake Moak hit a double to score Mason Thomas and Hayden Seymore, who both had walked, and Sheppard Norred, who had come in as a pinch runner, scored on a wild pitch. Weston tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth innings when Leighton Younse hit a bases-clearing triple that scored Colton Otwell, Grant Griffin and Eli Henderson.
Weston Baseball
Weston 9 Choudrant 2 (Oct. 3rd) – Three runs in the first, second and fourth innings propelled the Wolves to the season opening victory. Weston got four hits in the contest with Bryce Tolar hitting a double and knocking in two runs and Levi Southern (RS, RBI), Carter Powell, and Colton Otwell (RS) slapping singles. Eli Henderson scored twice while Corbin Powell, Grant Griffin, Remy Davis, James Lewis and Kaine Stassen all scored as well. Eli Jones and Leighton Younse contributed with RBIs.
Weston 6 Choudrant 0 (Oct. 3rd) – The Wolves made it a sweep as Bryce Tolar and Eli Henderson combined to strike out 9 in the one-hit shutout. Both were instrumental at the plate as well, with Henderson getting two hits, including a triple, scoring one, and knocking in one, while Tolar had 2 RBI and scored a run. Also contributing were Carter Powell and Colton Otwell, who both got a hit and scored a run, and Levi Southern, who had an RBI and a run scored. Leyton Younse scored a run, and Eli Jones got an RBI for the Wolves as well.
Weston 18 Simsboro 0 (Oct. 10th) – By scoring at least three runs in every inning of the five-inning contest, the Wolves set a new season high in runs for all area teams while holding Simsboro to no hits and no runs. Weston coaxed 14 walks from Simsboro pitching and got 9 hits, seven of which went for extra bases, led by a triple and a double by Corbin Powell and a pair of two-baggers from Eli Henderson. Also hitting doubles were Bryce Tolar and Colton Otwell. Leyton Younse also had a big game with three hits and three runs scored, while Grant Griffin, Eli Jones, and Remy Davis scored two runs each. Kaine Stassen added a pair of RBI’s and James Lewis scored a run and knocked one in. Brett Rasbury also scored once. Younse, Southern, and Otwell combined for the no-hitter.
Weston Softball
Choudrant 6 Weston 2 (Oct. 2nd) – Ryan Kate Wyatt went 2 for 2, but that was the only hits that WJH could muster in the season-opening defeat. Hannah Aldy and Kate Keiffer scored runs for the Lady Wolves, and Rachel Band got an RBI.
Weston 6 Calvin 0 (Oct. 3rd) Brooklyn Keiffer hit a single, scored twice, and knocked in a run, and Ashlyn Petre got a hit, RBI, and scored a run, while Kate Keiffer (RBI) and Kylee Ann Allen also collected singles. Hannah Aldy, Rachel Bandy, and Cadie Conn all scored as well. It was Ryan Kate Wyatt who stole the show, though, by allowing just one hit and striking out 7 to earn the shutout victory.
Weston 6 Quitman 1 (Oct. 7) – Autumn Kohler (RS) and Kate Keiffer (3B, 2 RS) got two hits apiece to lead the Lady Wolves hit parade that racked up a season best 9 hits against Quitman pitching. Hannah Aldy (2 RS, RBI), Rachel Bandy (RS) and Ashlyn Petre (2 RBI) all hit a double while Brooklyn Keiffer (RBI) and Cadie Conn (RBI) also got a hit each. Charleigh Newton went 2 for 2 with a double and Ella Simonelli hit a single for Quitman while Anna Pardue scored the lone run off of Bandy who got the win.
Weston 6 Choudrant 2 (Oct. 9) The Lady Wolves jumped out to a 3-0 lead and then reversed the score on Choudrant to even the season series. Rachel Bandy shut the Lady Aggies down in order to start the game and then smashed a drive to center field for the first home run in the area that scored Hannah Aldy and Ryan Kate Wyatt who had doubled and singled. After Choudrant had narrowed the lead to 3-2. Brooklyn Keiffer drew a walk and scored on three passed balls in the bottom of the second to put Weston up 4-2. Miriam Shuler walked to open up the bottom of third inning and scored on a triple by Kate Keiffer, who later crossed home plate on a wild pitch for the final run.
Quitman Softball
Quitman 9 Castor 1 (Oct. 2nd) – Charleigh Newton went 3 for 3 with a double and drove in three runs, and Anna Pardue scored three times as Quitman scored three runs in the first, second, and fourth innings. Kynleigh Leach also scored twice with Amelia Staggs, Ella Simonelli, and Emma Gray, who added an RBI, all crossing home plate. Jessie Walker added a hit and an RBI to complement the four-inning, one-hit effort by Staggs in the circle to earn the victory.
Quitman 12 Simsboro 7 (Oct. 6th) Trips were wild for the Lady Wolverines, who scored three runs in each of the four innings to take the victory over Simsboro that saw the two teams combine for 23 walks and just one hit apiece. Scoring for QJH was Kynleigh Leach, Amelia Staggs, Anna Pardue, Charleigh Newton, Ella Simonelli, Jessie Walker, Emma Gray, Brelaina Hall, Ryleigh McCormick, Elliot Savage, Blakelyn Gray, and Karlee Altheimer
