Jackson Parish Police Jury holds Monthly Meeting

The Jackson Parish Police Jury held its regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Monday, April 13th, in the Nathaniel Zeno, Jr. Meeting Room of the Jackson Parish Administrative Building, located at 160 Industrial Drive in Jonesboro.

The session opened with Jury members Todd Culpepper (President), Lewis Chatham, Sheketia Combs, Tarneshala Cowans, Regina Rowe, and Keith Burris approving the minutes from the March meetings.

The approval of a Cooperative Endeavor Agreement (CEA) with Pine Belt Multi-Purpose CCA for the summer employment program in the amount of $13,111.70, and the updating of the salary schedule for the work leader position, followed.

Reports by the managers of the Operations, Road, and Solid Waste Departments were then heard, leading to the Engineering Report and agreement to advertise for the 2026 Road Program Project on Sandy Acres and Bennett Farms Roads.

Approval of the Louisiana Compliance Questionnaire, updated policies and procedures, acting on Parish Board Appointments, and final comments by jury members were the final actions taken.

Large Reward Being Offered in Regard to Missing Cats in Hodge

A $1,000.00 reward is being offered for the return of these cats or information leading to their discovery

(Hodge, LA) A $1,000.00 reward has been offered for the return or information leading to the discovery of two missing cats in the Village of Hodge, LA. The disappearance of the cats and Mayor Gerald Palmer’s alleged involvement have sparked an online firestorm, according to a press release issued from the Humane Society of Louisiana (HSLA) on April 16th.

PRESS RELEASE

(Humane Society of Louisiana) – Tommy McDougald and his wife have cared for two outdoor cats, Bobbie & Tuxey, for several years. Bobbie is a very pretty Siamese bobtail, while Tuxey is a neutered male Tuxedo. Both sleep and play together on the McDougald’s porch.

However, one day last week, while leaving for work, Mrs. McDougald noticed a city worker baiting a humane trap very close to their property. Upon their return from work, the McDougalds noticed that both of their cats were missing.

Deeply upset, since they are domesticated cats reliant on humans for food, water, shelter, and vet care, Mr. McDougald immediately contacted the Mayor of Hodge, who responded that he had acted on a neighbor’s complaint and that they had been hauled far away. He implied that it was Mr. McDougald’s fault for allowing the cats to be outdoors.

The next morning, Mr. McDougald asked the worker about the cats, and the worker confirmed that these were the two trapped. However, when asked where he removed the cats to – a shelter or other facility, the worker simply replied that he took them up the hill in Jonesboro.

Mr. McDougald reviewed the city ordinances, which clearly state that any animal control officer (or employee acting in that capacity) may impound a cat or dog at a suitable facility, complete a formal intake registry of the animal, notify the owner within no less than three days, and charge an impoundment fee of $5.00 per day per animal, plus a $7.50 fine per animal. According to McDougald, the village of Hodge failed to comply with its own impoundment policies and ordinances.

To encourage the cats’ immediate return, the Humane Society and the McDougalds are offering a $1,000.00 reward for their return or for information leading to their discovery. To reach the Humane Society, please email them at info@humanela.org or call them at 1-888-6-HUMANE. The McDougalds have filed formal complaints against the mayor with multiple enforcement agencies and remain hopeful that somehow their beloved feline companions will be returned or found unharmed.

If you have information regarding the cats, you are encouraged to call HSLA Director Jeff Dorson at (901) 268-4432 or Tommy McDougald at (318) 413-2586.

Prep Track Report: Local schools take aim at District Championships

Ciara Gray, who holds the all-time LHSAA state record in the triple jump, looks to lead JHHS to the District 1-1A title

The high school track and field regular season is now complete, and the thinclads from Jonesboro-Hodge and Quitman High School look to be in prime shape to continue their ever-growing reputation of being the best in the state.

Last year, for the first time ever in local history, two Jackson Parish schools claimed state track and field championships in the same year with the Lady Tigers of Jonesboro-Hodge winning the LHSAA Division IV state championship and the Quitman boys team winning the Class B title.

During the regular season, both lived up to the challenge of being capable of putting up a defense of their crowns, with an added kicker. The Lady Wolverine track team also looks to be a strong contender for a state title. If accomplished, it would mark the first time in local history that a girls’ and boys’ program from the same school won a championship in the same year.

On Tuesday, April 21st, Jonesboro-Hodge will travel to Lakeside High School in Sibley, LA to take part in the District 1-1A track meet while both Quitman and Weston High Schools will compete in the District 1B championships on Tuesday, April 22nd.

Leading to the credence of the possibility of dominating district, regional and state competition in their various classifications is the performance turned in by a bevy of local athletes, many which enter the postseason ranked as #1 in their representative events.

Ciara Gray – JHHS: The defending female Most Valuable Performer in the 2025 Division IV state meet after winning four individual events to lead JHHS to their first-ever girls state title is the odds-on favorite to win the award again. The iconic star in both track and field events has won all four of her specialty events (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, long jump, and triple jump) in every meet JHHS competed in this spring except one, and that was when she came in second in the hurdles against elite Class 5A competition. Gray holds the best marks in Class A in the 300 hurdles (46.75 seconds), the long jump (18’35”), and triple jump (41’95”). Her mark in the triple jump is not only the best in the state, regardless of competition this year, but also is the new ALL TIME LHSAA record.

Nathan Harvey – Quitman High School: The defending Class B male state track meet Most Valuable Performer after winning titles in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles and running a leg on the state championship 200 meter relay team once again looks to repeat as champion in both hurdle events, having posted top times in Class B with a 15.94 mark in the 110 hurdles and a 39.89 time in the 300 hurdles. Harvey also runs a leg on the 4×200 relay team that is ranked #1 in Class B with a time of 1:32.75

Gage Horton – Quitman High School: Last year, the middle/long distance runner finished second in the 400 meters, third in the 800 meters, and 5th in the 1600 meters. This season, Horton has the top times in Class B in all three events, 52.14 – 400 meters, 2:00.19 – 800 meters, 4:44.21 – 1600 meters, leading to the hope of a three-peat at the state track meet. He also runs the leg on the 4×400-meter relay team that has a Class B best state time of 3:32.00.

Kaleigh King – Quitman High School: Proving her incredible versatility, King is the second from Jackson Parish to lead the state with the best time in the 300-meter hurdles, having posted 48.9 seconds to rank #1 in Class B. She is also a threat in the 110-meter hurdles, and, not only that, King has the best mark in the pole vault at 8 feet 6 inches, giving Quitman a prime opportunity to win that events at the state meet as well.

Asher Shultz – Quitman High School: The McNeese State University commit shocked the state last year when he came out of nowhere to launch a 170-foot throw in the Javelin to win the Class B title in the event, which bettered his previous best by over 10 feet. This year, Shultz enters the postseason ranked #1 in the event after posting a throw of 175 feet, far better than anyone else in Class B.

Jayden Harts – Quitman High School: Yet another multi-talented track and field star, Harts has the best long jump in Class B at 21 feet 11 inches and is a top contender for honors in the triple jump. Not only does he bring top speed to the sprints and run legs in the 4×100 and 4×200 relays, which also promises to give Quitman much-needed points in all the events.

Additional team members expected to make major contributions are Carmon Livingston, Derryn Osborne, Zu’Wy’Nesha Johnson, Neesha Johnson, Brianna Willamson, Samone Mallard, Jalenya Jackson and Sa’tavia Qualls from Jonesboro-Hodge and Megan Kelley, Skyleigh Webb, Anna Pardue, Jana Potts, Maggie Guyotte, Kaleigh Webb, Josiah Ramsey, Mason Howard, and Elijah Jackson from Quitman.

Tuesday Scramble Winners
Zack Pickett, Kyler West, Reggie Hall, Dylan Pickett, DJ Harrell

A whole lot of birdies and even a few eagles were sighted at the Jackson Parish Golf Course on April 14th when a strong field of 24 golfers, which made up five teams, took part in the fifth “Tuesday Scramble” of the season.

At the end of the event, the best score of the weekly tournament season was equaled, not once but twice, leading to DJ Harrell, Zack Pickett, Dylan Pickett, Reggie Hall, and Kyler West being declared the winners of the scorecard playoff after shooting a round 11 under par, 25 on the nine-hole, par 36 course.

Relegated to second place after shooting the same was Peyton Mitchell, Bretton Williams, Donnie Freeman, Andy York, and Rick Brown, with Blake Smith, Jackson Kennard, Jerry Cloud, Bert Martin, and Jeff Conville coming in third at 8 under par.

Glynn Harris Outdoors and Fishing Report

Hyatt Lands Then Releases Bass of a Lifetime

I’m not a technologically adept person. That’s why I called my friend and computer expert, Rex Moncrief, last week to come help me set up my new phone.

Rex came, got my phone up and running, and as he left, he mentioned he was headed home to Bossier City to pick up his boat and meet his friend, Eddie Hyatt, Sr. The duo was scheduled to fish a tournament Thursday night on Cross Lake and he wanted them to do some pre-fishing to try and locate some fish for the tourney. Something magical happened that night and later, Rex called to tell me about it.

“I met Eddie at the lake at 4:00 and things were going on real well. We hooked and shook off several bass in the four to five pound range. It was about time to leave and at 7:40, Eddie said he wanted to try one more spot. He cast a big ribbon tail plastic worm to the base of a tree and I heard him grunt and realized he’d hooked a really big fish,” Moncrief explained.

“The bass was taking him for a ride going under the boat. She was trying to tail walk but was too big for that. I told him I didn’t have time to get the net and I’d try to ‘lip’ her,” he added.

Moncrief said that when he was first able to get his hands on her, he figured she may be a fish in the 9 to 10 pound range but he realized she was almost more than he could handle.

“Once I got my hands on her and could feel and see just how big she was, I knew she was more than that. When I was finally able to pick her up and get her in the boat, we were both flipping out.”

“I got my Bubba scale out, made sure it was zeroed and put her on the scales. My first comment was ‘This can’t be right’. The scales showed 15.24 pounds. I got her off the scale, made sure it was zeroed and weighed her two more times. Each time it read exactly the same – 15.24 pounds,” he said.

“We didn’t measure her because my Golden Rule measurer topped out at 22 inches and she was more than that. She was full of eggs with a huge swollen belly,” he added.

The duo felt they needed to get the fish on scales that were certified but as it was late, the Cross Lake Patrol office had already closed and they could find no one nearby who had certified scales. What to do next was left to Hyatt.

“A fish that big that had undergone being caught and handled was already stressed. I could have put her in the live well but doubted if she could make it. I told Rex I’m going to release her after we got photos and maybe somebody else could experience a fish of a lifetime like I did, so that’s what we did, we watched her swim away,” said Hyatt.

They later learned that the record for Cross Lake was a 12.55 pound bass caught several years ago. Unfortunately, Hyatt’s bass can’t be entered in the lake records because of them not having access to certified scales.

Did Hyatt have regrets about having to release the fish?

“I have no regrets at all. God gave me the chance to catch such a special fish and I’m not going to let her die,” said Hyatt.

There was always the chance that when the duo fished the tournament on Thursday night that she might bite again, but that didn’t happen. They weighed in 7.3 pounds to finish 12th Thursday night.

You have to tip your hat to Eddie Hyatt for the decision he made to release what would certainly be a lake record fish rather than see her die in a live well.

Domestic Violence in Louisiana: A Closer Look at Race and Economic Disparities

Domestic violence continues to grip Louisiana at alarming levels, cutting across every community—but not evenly. New data shows clear patterns tied to race and economic status, pointing to deeper structural issues that go beyond individual households.

Recent findings from the Tulane University Newcomb Institute reveal that violence is not a marginal issue in the state—it is the norm for many. More than half of Louisiana adults have experienced some form of violence in their lifetime, including intimate partner violence.

Roughly 1.8 million adults in the state have experienced intimate partner violence, and about 200,000 cases occur each year.

On a single day in 2025, domestic violence programs across the state served 805 victims, highlighting the constant demand for services.

The connection between domestic violence and economic hardship is direct and hard to ignore.

Survivors of intimate partner violence in Louisiana face an average annual cost of over $105,000, including medical care, lost wages, and legal expenses.

Statewide, domestic violence costs Louisiana an estimated $10.1 billion annually, nearly a quarter of the state’s budget.

Lower-income households are disproportionately impacted. Financial stress, housing instability, and limited access to resources increase both the risk of abuse and the difficulty of escaping it. Survivors in poverty are also less likely to report abuse due to fear of losing financial support or housing.

In practical terms, the less money a household has, the fewer options a victim has to get out safely.

While domestic violence affects every racial group, data consistently show disparities in exposure and outcomes.

Communities of color, particularly Black Louisianans, are more likely to experience higher rates of violence overall due to overlapping factors like poverty, limited access to healthcare, and historic inequality.

Louisiana has long ranked among the highest states for domestic violence-related homicides, with disproportionately high impacts in marginalized communities.

Research emphasizes that these disparities are not about race alone—they are tied to systemic conditions such as neighborhood poverty, under-resourced services, and barriers to legal protection.

Women remain the most affected group when it comes to severe domestic violence:

Women in Louisiana are three times more likely than men to experience severe or life-threatening intimate partner violence.
One in four women who experienced such violence reported suicidal thoughts within the past year.

Even these numbers don’t tell the full story.

Nearly half of survivors never report their abuse to anyone.
Fear of retaliation, financial dependence, and distrust in the system keep many victims silent.

That means the real scope of domestic violence in Louisiana is likely far worse than what’s documented.

Domestic violence in Louisiana is not just a criminal issue—it’s an economic and social one. The data makes three things clear:
• Communities facing systemic inequality carry a heavier burden
• Until those root causes are addressed—jobs, housing stability, access to services—the cycle will continue.
• The numbers are already high. Ignoring them will only make them worse.

Ponderings…..

This morning at the day school, the fish tank was mysteriously covered with a blanket as if it were being punished for bad behavior. If you didn’t know better, you might’ve thought the fish were grounded for talking back to the teacher or refusing to share their crayons.

But no—turns out we’ve got ourselves an algae outbreak. A full-blown, green, slimy, “Swamp Thing” situation. And the only way to get it under control is to keep the light out until the bloom settles down.

Now, I’m no marine biologist, but I do know this: when the fish tank is greener than a St. Patrick’s Day parade, something’s off.
And wouldn’t you know it—Jesus has something to say about this.

Because algae, as it turns out, loves light. Not the good, life-giving kind of light Jesus talks about. No, algae loves the “I’ve been left alone too long without boundaries” kind of light. Give algae too much light, and it throws a party. Give it a little more, and it invites all its cousins. Before long, the fish are filing formal complaints and asking for relocation.

So the solution?
Cover the tank.
Limit the light.
Let things reset.

And that’s when it hit me: sometimes God does the same thing with us.

Not because we’re bad. Not because we’re in trouble. But because something in us has started growing that doesn’t belong there—resentment, worry, pride, comparison, hurry, that one comment someone made in 2009 that we still replay like it’s a classic movie.

Sometimes the Lord lovingly puts a “cover” over our tank.

A season of quiet.
A pause we didn’t choose.
A slowdown we didn’t schedule.
A moment where the lights dim and we wonder, “What is happening?

But maybe God is simply helping us get rid of the spiritual algae that’s clouding the water.

Jesus once said, “I am the light of the world,” and He also said, “You are the light of the world.” But He never said, “You need to be under the spotlight all the time.” Sometimes the brightest thing God can do is give us a little shade so the unhealthy stuff stops multiplying.

Think about it: When was the last time you slowed down long enough to notice what was growing in you? When did you last let God filter the water of your soul?

The fish tank will be uncovered Thursday morning. The water will clear. The fish will go back to doing whatever fish do (mostly judging us through the glass). But the covering is part of the healing.

Maybe you’re in a covered tank season right now. Maybe God is dimming the lights not to punish you, but to purify you. Not to hide you, but to help you.

And when the cover comes off, you’ll shine clearer, brighter, and more beautifully than before.

Even the fish would say amen to that—if they weren’t so busy swimming in circles.

PUBLIC NOTICE

The Eros Community Water System is currently in violation of the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for trihalomethanes as set forth by the State [Part XII of the Louisiana State Sanitary Code (LAC 51:XII)] and the Federal Primary Drinking Water Regulations (40 CFR Part 141).

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) set drinking water standards and requires the disinfection of drinking water. Where disinfection is used in the treatment of drinking water, disinfectants combine with naturally occurring organic and inorganic matter present in water to form chemicals called disinfection byproducts (DBPs). EPA and LDH set standards for controlling the levels of disinfectants and DBPs in drinking water, including trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic
acid (HAAs). Some people who drink water containing THMs in excess if the MCL over many years may experience problems with their liver, kidneys, or central nervous system, and may have an increased risk of getting cancer.

In December 1998, EPA set enforceable drinking water standards for TTHMs at 80 parts per billion (ppb) and for HAA5 at 60 parts per billion (ppb) to reduce the risk of cancer or other
adverse health effects. Compliance with the TTHMs and HAA5 standard for public water systems serving less than 10,000 individuals initially became effective and enforceable on
January 1, 2004. Compliance with the TTHMs standard is determined by calculating a locational running annual average (LRAA) of quarterly TTHMs sample results. Compliance
calculations performed for the first quarter of 2026 show that the system’s current TTHMs LRAAs are 84 ppb at DBP03- 290 Century Loop; Thus, the system is currently in violation of the TTHMs standard.

Due to damage sustained during the recent ice storm, the aerator became temporarily inoperable. Upon discovery, corrective actions were promptly taken, and repairs were
completed as quickly as possible to restore normal operations.

Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail. If you have any questions, contact the water system’s secretary, Heather Lewis, at 318-417-6700.

This is not an emergency. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. EPA and LDH do not consider this violation to have any serious adverse health effects on human health as a result of short-term exposure; however, continued long-term exposure to TTHMs and HAA5 levels above the standard (e.g., 20 years of exposure) has the potential to have serious adverse effects on human health.

Jackson Parish School Board
April 13, 2026
Resolution

BE IT FOREVER KNOWN, that by official action taken at its meeting of April 13, 2026, the Jackson Parish School Board (sometimes referred to as the “Board”) adopted the following resolution:
WHEREAS, the Louisiana Legislature enacted, and the Governor signed into law, H.B. 71 (also known as Act No. 676);
WHEREAS, H.B. 71 reflects the Legislature’s observation that “the Supreme Court of the United States [has] recognized that the Ten Commandments ‘have historical significance as one of the foundations of our legal system’”;
WHEREAS, H.B. 71 reflects the Legislature’s “intent to … ensure that the students in our public schools may understand and appreciate the foundational documents of our state and national government”;
WHEREAS, to effectuate that intent, H.B. 71 directs “each public school governing authority [to] display the Ten Commandments in each classroom in each school under its jurisdiction,” in accordance with specific minimum requirements;
WHEREAS, H.B. 71 provides that “[t]he nature of the display shall be determined by each governing authority”;
WHEREAS, the Attorney General promulgated a guidance letter on January 3, 2025, containing the following recommendation:
Louisiana schools should implement H.B. 71 pursuant to the following parameters:

1. A school should select, and display at its discretion, the four displays attached to this guidance letter—provided that the displays themselves or funding for the displays are donated—such that any given display may appear in any given classroom.
2. To ensure readability, each display should be between the statutory minimum size, 11 inches by 14 inches, and 18 inches by 24 inches.
3. To avoid any possibility of confusion regarding whether displays are attributable to individual teachers, a school should place its displays on any classroom wall other than behind a teacher’s desk, podium, or location from which a teacher ordinarily delivers instruction.
4. A school should seek to place its displays among others reflecting educational content, such as those displaying the Mayflower Compact, the Declaration of Independence, and the Northwest Ordinance, see La. R.S. 25:1282.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that by the vote reflected herein below, the Jackson Parish School Board does hereby elect to (a) adopt the Attorney General’s guidance as its own and (b) direct all schools within its jurisdiction to immediately implement H.B. 71 in accordance with that guidance, provided that the specified displays or funding are donated:

A devoted member of Walnut Ridge Baptist Church, Charles lived a life rooted in faith, hard work, and a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He was an avid deer hunter who found joy in the quiet of the woods and a skilled carpenter who took pride in working with his hands. Whether tending to his garden or building something from the ground up, Charles embraced life with purpose and care. Above all, he cherished his family, finding his greatest happiness in the love of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Charles is survived by his wife of 64 years, Martiel (Lockhart) Cooper; daughter, Phyllis Cooper Kohler (John), son, Lavelle Cooper; grandchildren, Tony Kohler (Sara) and Blaine Cooper (Alexa); great-grandchildren, Avery Cooper, Asher Cooper, Adliegh Cooper, Steely Cooper, Autumn Kohler, and Ava Kohler. He was preceded in death by his father, Adriel Moore Cooper; mother, Lula Mae (Brown) Cooper; and brother, Gary Cooper.

The funeral service was held on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Southern-Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel, followed by burial at Antioch Cemetery in Quitman under the direction of Southern-Edmonds Funeral Home in Jonesboro.

Serving as pallbearers were Tony Kohler, Lavelle Cooper, John Kohler, Blaine Cooper, Trey Parker, Stacey Johnson, and Asher Cooper.

Joshua Wayne Taylor
November 17, 2005 – April 6, 2026

Funeral services for Josh Taylor will be held at First Baptist Church in Chatham, Louisiana, on April 25, 2026, officiated by Bro. Tim Atkins.

Josh lived 20 years, 4 months, and 20 days on this earth before his soul took flight. He was known as brilliant, compassionate, serious, and funny—fiercely protective of those he loved. Though his time here was short, it was deeply impactful.

Throughout his life, Josh faced many struggles. His battles with severe allergies were visible to those around him, but he also carried deeper, quieter burdens that few truly saw. He endured unimaginable loss, including the passing of his sister and several cousins within just a few years. Rather than burden others with his grief, Josh often masked his pain with humor, bringing light to those around him even when he himself was hurting.

There were times when Josh wrestled with his faith, struggling to understand how such hardships could be allowed. But on December 19, 2025, during a hospital stay, he experienced a moment of peace that would stay with him. It was said that Jesus came to him, sat at the edge of his bed, placed a hand on his leg, and reassured him, “Everything is going to be okay.” Just 108 days later, he was called home.

Josh is preceded in death by his sister, Amber Taylor; maternal grandparents, Wayne and Darlene Ellis; great-grandparents, Fred and Retha Ellis; cousins, Kasey Dodson and Josh Weaver; paternal great-grandparents, Hugo and Virginia Succow; paternal grandparents, Peggy Kelly and Don Taylor, Sr.; and cousin, Lane Guidry.

He is survived by his beloved fiancée, Ilena Sumrall; his mother, Sharon Ellis; his sister, Virginia Ellis, his father, Don Taylor; and his nieces, Jade and Alina Cook; cousins, Caleb (Christopher), Jerri Ellis, Kori and Katie Dodson, Octavia and Archer Dodson, Ari Crenshaw, Penelope Steel, Destiny, Dalton, and Christopher Primeaux, Jessica Guidry, and Christopher Kennedy; his uncle, Jerry Ellis; aunt, Rachel Ellis; and uncle and aunt, Terry and Donna Orr, along with many extended family members and loved ones.

Josh’s life, though brief, was filled with love, resilience, and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew him.

Randy was preceded in death by his father, Willie “Buddy” McCurdy; mother, Nellie McCurdy; and nephew, Tyler Ledford.

Randy leaves behind his loving wife, Sherry Farnell McCurdy; son, William “Randall” McCurdy, Jr.; daughter, Sarah LeaAnn McCurdy; step-daughter, Hollie Rachelle Truelove; grandchildren, Bailey McCurdy, Jaden McCurdy, Blakely McCurdy, Leo Ziegler, Austin Anding, Elizabeth Truelove, and Rosie Grace Truelove; sister, Diane McCurdy Turnbow; brothers, Eddie Wayne McCurdy, Michael McCurdy and Kenneth McCurdy; numerous nieces and nephews; along with other extended family and close friends.

Prep Softball: Maggie Guyotte of QHS Reaches Incredible Career Milestones

Talk about going out in style! In the final regular season game of her tremendous career, Maggie Guyotte of Quitman High School hit two home runs in two at-bats, drove in 5 runs, and scored 4 more, both season bests, to help lift QHS to a resounding 14-4 victory over Division I Alexandria Senior High.

More importantly, the two hits gave Guyotte a total of 300 for her illustrious career, earning the Louisiana Tech University signee the distinction of being the only player in LHSAA history and only the 7th player in the entire nation to reach the incredible plateau, according to National Federation High School records.

Adding to her record-setting achievements, the five runs batted in gave the prolific offensive talent a career total of 270 RBI, spanning 2021-26, also the best all-time in Louisiana high school softball history and 5th overall in the nation’s annals.

Want more? Her 13th and 14th home runs of the 2026 season give Guyotte a career total of 72, good for second place all-time in Louisiana, trailing only the 80 hit by Marci Bergeron of Notre Dame Crowley (2019-22) and 13th place all-time in the nation.

Guyotte will have the opportunity to add to her already incredible statistics as Quitman has qualified for the LHSAA 2026 Class B postseason, where she hopes to lead the Lady Wolverines to a third straight state title.

While the 2026 playoff brackets have not yet been released, the District 1B champion Lady Wolverines, who finished the regular season with a 21-9 overall record, have not only certainly qualified for the 20-team Class B bracket but will receive a first-round bye and host second and third round contests by virtue of their #2 ranking.

Jonesboro-Hodge and Weston both look to have fallen short in their quest for the “Dash to Frasch,” which is what the 2026 state tournament is fondly called after annually being held at Frash Park in Sulphur, LA. The Lady Tigers, who doubled their win total from a year ago, finished the season with a 4-14 mark and ranked #35, with only the top 26 teams qualifying for the Division IV playoffs, while Weston (8-18) ended the year at #21 in the LHSAA power rankings with the top 20 teams qualifying for the Class B playoffs.

Two New Life Jacket Loaner Stations To Be Constructed At Caney Lake

As part of the Safe Waterways for Jackson Parish Expansion Initiative, funded through the Pledge 10 – Jonesboro State Bank Grant, Jackson Parish Ambulance Service District (JPASD) has partnered with the Jonesboro-Hodge High School Agri-Science Department, led by Angela Shows, to design and construct two new Life Jacket Loaner Stations at Caney Lake.

With these additions, the Life Jacket Loaner program will now have three fully equipped stations of these life-saving devices at Jimmie Davis State Park, Caney Lake Spillway Marina, and Caney Lake Landing / Boat Launch.

The program is simple:
BORROW a properly sized life jacket while enjoying the waterways.
RETURN it when you leave so others can use it.

JPASD thanks everyone who has played a role in making this initiative possible, which reflects what can be achieved when community, education, and public safety come together with a shared purpose.

Together, We Can Save Lives.

Prep Baseball: All three Jackson Parish Schools Qualify for LHSAA Playoffs

The 2026 LHSAA regular season for baseball drew to a close on Tuesday, but for Jonesboro-Hodge, Quitman, and Weston High Schools, the season continues as all three have qualified for the postseason for the first time in five years, all with hopes of making the State Tournament that will be held at McMurray Park in Sulphur, LA.

In one of the better “feel-good” stories of the year, Jonesboro-Hodge (14-7) qualified for the Division IV playoffs to earn a postseason berth for the first time since 2021. The Tigers, seeded #13 in the 24-team bracket, will play host to #20 Merryville (8-11) on April 21st. The winner will then travel to #4 seed Centerville for a regional round matchup.

In Class B action, District 1B champion Weston (21-12) claimed the highest seeding at #4, followed by Quitman High (17-14) at #7. By virtue of their lofty status, both earned first-round byes in the 20-team bracket with Weston slated to host the winner of #13 Anacoco and #20 Avoyelles Public Charter at a date to be determined and Quitman scheduled to host #10 Stanley in the regional round on April 30th.
