Asher Shultz of Quitman High School, who is the defending Class B state champion in the javelin, has committed to continue his track career at McNeese State University, located in Lake Charles, LA, and a member of the Southland Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

The son of Amanda Shively Linton and Donovan Shultz is the current state leader in Class B in the Javelin, having recorded a new personal record throw of 175 feet, established at the April 10th Choudrant Relays. 

The distance is the second-longest in the javelin ever recorded in Quitman High School history, trailing only Lee Webb, who threw 186 feet in the 1990 Class B state meet. It is also the fourth longest in Jackson Parish history.

The administration and staff of the Jackson Parish Library is pleased to announce that Sophie Ramirez has been selected as Artist of the Month for April.

Sophie is an 18-year-old graduating senior at Weston High School and has had a deep passion for art since the age of 6 years old. Her primary hobby is drawing, though she also enjoys painting, sculpting, and various other artistic media. Outside of her creative work, she enjoys reading and walking.

On Monday, April 13th, the Jonesboro-Hodge Elementary School (JHES) Faculty and Staff held its Annual Union Bee Transition Day. Incoming Kindergarteners got to tour their future campus and meet faculty and staff. Each student left with a Summer Learning Kit, which included a book, an at-home learning packet, and supplemental materials.

All guardians are encouraged to get a head start on learning how and to be sure they have registered. The registration link can be found on the jpsb.us website. In-person registration assistance will also be available through the Student Service Center @ Jonesboro-Hodge Middle School, located at 440 Old Winnfield Hwy in Jonesboro.

This past January, local residents endured a debilitating winter ice storm that knocked out power for days. Entergy crews from all over the nation quickly responded, which resulted in some being injured, including local resident Hunter Alexander, who was severely burned and is still undergoing rehabilitation. 

In an effort to show appreciation to those who put their own safety at risk to help restore electricity to the local community and surrounding area, Shawn Murphy State Farm Agency in Jonesboro hosted a Lineman Appreciation Day on Tuesday, April 14th, where a BBQ lunch was served for the Linemen. 

“We just wanted to show them how much we appreciate their commitment and dedication, and this was our way of saying Thank You for what they do and have done for us,” said Shawn.

John P. Thompson changed our world yet most of us have never heard of him. At some point in our lives, each of us has used his inventions. It would be hard to find a home in America which does not contain multiples of John’s inventions. They are so commonplace that they often go unnoticed.

Little is known about John Thompson, but he was born in 1857 in Iowa. After working various jobs including laborer, bank teller, and room furnisher in a couple of different states, he eventually settled in Portland, Oregon. While there, he worked as an auto mechanic. John used a hand tool to tighten fasteners to the cars he worked on, but the tool kept slipping off the fastener. This resulted in skinned knuckles and damage to the cars.

Finally, John’s frustration had reached its limit. He decided to create a new tool and fastener that when used together would not slip. No one knows how long John worked on his inventions or how many attempts it took before he created his “cruciform groove” tool and fastener, but in the summer of 1932, John filed for patents for his two inventions.

On May 9, 1933, the United States Patent Office granted patent numbers 1,908,080 and 1,908,081 for John’s fastener and tool respectively. For reasons that remain unclear, in the patents John assigned or transferred his rights to his inventions to Henry Frank. The connection between John and Henry has never been proven, but many people believe that Henry purchased or funded John’s patents.

Rather than investing the money to create and sell the tool and fasteners himself, Henry created a company to franchise the products. Companies which produced them paid Henry’s company a hefty royalty. In 1936, Cadillac became the first industrial customer to use John’s inventions for its 1937-year model cars. The new tool and fasteners increased production and lowered costs. Word quickly spread and within a short time the other automobile companies as well as railroad and aviation manufacturers adopted John’s cruciform groove inventions.

In September 1940, John died impoverished and largely forgotten, but Henry became wealthy. John’s cruciform groove inventions could have been known as the Thompson screw and Thompson screwdriver, but because he transferred the patents to Henry, we know them by his last name. We have all used Henry Frank…Phillips screws and Phillips screwdrivers.

The Eros Community Water System is currently in violation of the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for trihalomethanes as set forth by the State [Part XII of the Louisiana State Sanitary Code (LAC 51:XII)] and the Federal Primary Drinking Water Regulations (40 CFR Part 141).

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) set drinking water standards and requires the disinfection of drinking water. Where disinfection is used in the treatment of drinking water, disinfectants combine with naturally occurring organic and inorganic matter present in water to form chemicals called disinfection byproducts (DBPs). EPA and LDH set standards for controlling the levels of disinfectants and DBPs in drinking water, including trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic
acid (HAAs). Some people who drink water containing THMs in excess if the MCL over many years may experience problems with their liver, kidneys, or central nervous system, and may have an increased risk of getting cancer.

In December 1998, EPA set enforceable drinking water standards for TTHMs at 80 parts per billion (ppb) and for HAA5 at 60 parts per billion (ppb) to reduce the risk of cancer or other
adverse health effects. Compliance with the TTHMs and HAA5 standard for public water systems serving less than 10,000 individuals initially became effective and enforceable on
January 1, 2004. Compliance with the TTHMs standard is determined by calculating a locational running annual average (LRAA) of quarterly TTHMs sample results. Compliance
calculations performed for the first quarter of 2026 show that the system’s current TTHMs LRAAs are 84 ppb at DBP03- 290 Century Loop; Thus, the system is currently in violation of the TTHMs standard.

Due to damage sustained during the recent ice storm, the aerator became temporarily inoperable. Upon discovery, corrective actions were promptly taken, and repairs were
completed as quickly as possible to restore normal operations.

Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail. If you have any questions, contact the water system’s secretary, Heather Lewis, at 318-417-6700.

This is not an emergency. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. EPA and LDH do not consider this violation to have any serious adverse health effects on human health as a result of short-term exposure; however, continued long-term exposure to TTHMs and HAA5 levels above the standard (e.g., 20 years of exposure) has the potential to have serious adverse effects on human health.

Sandra Jean Walker
April 24, 1960 – June 27, 2025

Sandra J. Walker, born on April 24, 1960, in the warm embrace of Louisiana, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2025, in Chesapeake, Virginia, at the age of 65.

Throughout her life, Sandra was a beacon of light and inspiration to all who knew her. As an editor for CBN, she was dedicated to spreading the word of the Lord far and wide, touching countless lives with her work. Her passion for her faith was as steadfast as her commitment to her career.

Sandra found joy in the simple pleasures of life. An avid horseback rider, she delighted in the companionship of her horses, and her love for animals extended to caring for her cherished cats and dogs. The great outdoors called to her spirit, and she spent many peaceful hours fishing and camping, savoring the beauty of nature.

She was predeceased by her beloved mother, Shirley D. Robison, and step-father, Gene Robison, who welcomed her with open arms into eternal rest.

Sandra is survived by her loving sister, Stacey R. Porcuna, and brother-in-law, Alejandro Porcuna, III. She was a devoted aunt to Alejandro Porcuna, IV, and Amanda Porcuna, whose lives were enriched by her presence. Her legacy continues through her one great-niece and four great-nephews, who brought immense joy to her later years. Sandra’s extended family and numerous friends will forever remember her warmth, kindness, and unwavering love.

Though she has left this earthly life, Sandra J. Walker leaves behind a tapestry of cherished memories that will be held dear by all who were fortunate enough to have known her. May her soul find peace and her spirit continue to guide those she loved.

A graveside service will be held at Garden of Memories in Jonesboro on Friday, April 24, 2026, under the direction of Southern-Edmonds Funeral Home. Bro. Bubba Walsworth will officiate.

Hollis Evan Prohn, Jr.
August 14, 1963 – April 10, 2026

Hollis Evan Prohn, Jr., age 62, passed away peacefully at his residence in Atlanta, Louisiana, on April 10, 2026. A man known for his strong work ethic and dedication, Evan spent his life providing for and caring for those he loved. He found great joy in riding motorcycles and spending time in the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. Above all else, Evan cherished his family, who were the center of his life and the source of his greatest pride and happiness.

Evan is survived by his children, Leslie Vallee & husband, David, Lisa Prohn, Amy Prohn and Julia Prohn; sister, Bonnie (Prohn) Rieson; 8 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Hollis Evan Prohn, Sr., mother, Lillie Mae (Ramsey); grandson, Billy Adams; sisters, Linda Bryant, Dorothy Miller and Dianne Knox; and half-sister, Lillie Belle Jones.

Friends may visit with the family at Southern-Edmonds Funeral Home in Jonesboro, on Friday, April 17, 2026 from 10:30 AM until 12:00 noon. Bro. Blaine Ussery will conduct the funeral service set to begin at 12 noon. Burial will follow at the Jonesboro Cemetery under the direction of Southern-Edmonds Funeral Home.

The 2026 Miss Sunshine Festival Pageant was held in the Auditorium of Jonesboro-Hodge High School on Saturday, April 11th, where ten young ladies were selected as the Queens in the various age divisions. 

Taking the overall crown of the Miss Sunshine Festival was Addison Johns, who will receive a $2,000.00 Scholarship toward her education at an institution of higher learning upon enrollment.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development advises motorists that beginning on Thursday, April 16, 2026, the LA 147 bridge over Brown Creek Tributary in Jackson Parish will be closed for replacement.

This bridge is located approximately 1.8 miles east of the intersection with LA 505 (see included map).

The closure is anticipated to last approximately four (4) months, with progress dependent on weather conditions and other factors that may impact construction timelines.

DOTD is sending out this notification on behalf of the Office of Louisiana Highway Construction (OLHC), which is managing construction activities for this project, H.016494 DIST04/05 BRIDGE BUNDLE SFY25-26.

Restrictions/Permits: Total road closure at the specified location. All vehicles will need to utilize an alternate route.

Alternate Route: Appropriate detour signage will be in place.

This work will be performed WEATHER PERMITTING.

On April 8th, Jackson Parish fire departments from Jonesboro, Quitman, and Hodge assisted Bienville Fire District 7 in putting out a fire just over the Jackson/Bienville Parish line that burned over 50 acres and an uninhabited structure. According to Jackson Parish Fire Chief’s Association President Philip Brown, the fire was deemed unintentional. 

Brown also reminds that even though the area has received some rain lately, the ground remains very dry and conditions are still favorable for fires to get out of control quickly. Therefore, the burn ban for Jackson Parish is still in effect until further notice.

This is a recording! No, actually, it is not, but it could just as well be. Quitman and Weston High Schools have won the District 1B championships in softball and baseball. 

For the record, the District 1B tournament title won by the Lady Wolverines on Saturday marked the 6th straight district title QHS has won, while Weston won their third in a row 1B championship in baseball.

Both exit district play with impressive unbeaten streaks. The Lady Wolverines extended their winning streak in district play to 24 wins without a loss, stretching back six seasons, while Weston ran their mark to 19-0 over the past three seasons. 

Totally Dominant! None of the four games, two each by the Quitman girls and Weston boys, were close as all victories were by 10 runs or more. The Lady Wolverines, ranked 2nd in Class B with a 19-9 record and a season-best six-game winning streak, thrashed Simsboro 12-1 in the tourney semifinals and Weston 15-0 in the finals, with both games called early due to the “mercy rule”. Weston, ranked 4th in Class B baseball with a 21-11 record, also breezed to the title by taking down Providence Classical Academy 17-1 in four innings in the semifinals and Simsboro 14-2 in the five-inning final matchup.

District 1B Softball Semifinals

Quitman 12 Simsboro 1: Hallie Kate Pullig smashed a home run, scored 3, and had 3 RBI, and Briley Bowers hit a pair of doubles and drove in 3, while Anna Claire Leach also had a pair of hits and scored 3 runs. Kinsley Ponder also came up big with 3 RBI, Brenna Lamkin knocked in two and scored, and Keeley Davis scored twice. Amelia Staggs scored a run, and Maggie Guyotte knocked in one while also pitching a complete game two-hitter for the victory. 

Weston 14 Doyline 3: Gracie Gray allowed only three meaningless singles while also hitting a double, scoring twice, and knocking in a pair of runs, while Davynee Bearden hit the first home run of her career. Teegan Hall also had a career day with four hits, including a triple and 5 RBI, while Carlynn Waters also hit a “three-bagger”, scored twice, and drove in a run. Kate Keiffer scored three times and had an RBI, and both Molly Beaubouef and Brylee Cuthrell, who had an RBI, scored a run. 

District 1B Softball Finals

Quitman 15 Weston 0: Brenna Lamkin pitched a one-hit shutout for her 11th victory of the year, and Maggie Guyotte (4 RBI, 3RS), Amelia Staggs ( 2 RS, 2 RBI), Hallie Kate Pullig (2 RBI), Briley Bowers (RS) and Anna Claire Leach (3 RS, RBI, SB) all hit “two baggers”. Zoee Williams also drove in a pair of runs and scored, while Avery Watson scored twice. Carly Jo Griffin got the sole hit for Weston. 

District 1B Baseball Tournament Semifinals

Weston 17 PCA 1: Colton Blundell drove in a team high 4 runs, scored twice, and hit his first home run since returning from a mid-season knee injury, while Drew Browing hit a pair of doubles, scored three times, and knocked three. Dawson Griffin made his first district tournament appearance memorable as well with a career high four RBI while also smacking three hits, including a double, and scoring a run. Liam Weaver (3 RBI, RS) and Easton Border (RS) both got a pair of hits, while Ty Henderson scored three times. Remy Kennard and Jase Borders, who struck out 9 in four innings to pick up the win, both scored a run and knocked one in. Beaux Oliver and Corbin Powell also both scored a run. 

Simsboro 6 Quitman 2: Two runs in each of the first two innings by the Tigers were to much for Quitman to overcome. Hudson Pullig hit a triple and Kace West smacked a double for two of the Wolverines 7 hits on the day that dropped Quitman’s to 16-14 on the season. Cail King and Zach Smudricks had two hits apiece and Maddox Duck got a hit and scored a run. 

District 1B Baseball Tournament Finals

Weston 14 Simsboro 2: Ty Henderson (3RS, RBI)hit his first home run of the season and Drew Browning (3 RS, 3RBI, SB) hit a pair of doubles for the second game in a row as Liam Weaver (RS, 2 RBI) and Bryce Tolar (RS, RBI) combined for the five hit victory. Beaux Oliver (RS, RBI) hit a triple while Jase Borders scored three times and knocked one in, and Colton Blundell had 2 RBI. Dawson Griffin and Leyton Younse added a run each to round out the scoring.

The Jackson Parish School District is proud to announce that the recipients for the 2026 I.J. Allen Memorial Scholarship have been selected. 

The three-tiered level award in the amount of $13,000.00 is given each year by the Allen family and Jonesboro State Bank to deserving graduating seniors of the Jackson Parish schools in honor of Mr. I. J. Allen, who passed away in 1980 and was a former president of Jonesboro State Bank and an iconic member of the Jonesboro business community. 

Being selected for the $6,000.00 award is Evie Hasley of Quitman High School. Larsen Thomas, also of Quitman High School, was chosen to receive the $4,000.00 award, while Emily Taylor of Weston High School received the $3,000.00 award.

Caldwell-Peacock Stadium on the campus of Jonesboro-Hodge High School will host the annual Llewellyn Starks Invitational this Monday, April 13th, with over 20 girls’ and boys’ track and field teams from across the state of Louisiana having committed to attend. Field Events are expected to begin at 3:00 pm, with running events to follow at 4:30 pm.

The meet is named after one of the most iconic track and field stars ever from north Louisiana. The 1985 JHHS graduate was an LHSAA Class 2A state champion in the long jump before becoming the NCAA long jump champion at LSU and earning a silver medal in the event as a professional at the Pan American Games in 1990. 

JHHS Girls Win Mangham Invitational

Caira Gray was “solid gold” once again. The defending 2025 LHSAA Class A state track meet female performer of the year dominated the competition at the Mangham Invitational, earning the Most Valuable Field Performer Award in the girls’ division and leading JHHS to the team victory at a meet that drew 17 schools from across northeast Louisiana.

Her performance in winning the long jump, triple jump, and 100-meter hurdles, and in running the opening leg of the winning 4×200-meter relay, directly accounted for 40 of the 132 team points that gave the Lady Tigers a whopping 45-point advantage over second-place Delhi Charter. 

Not only did Gray win three individual events, but she did so in local record-setting fashion. Leading the way was her 41′ 9″ leap in the triple jump, which set another new Jackson Parish and JHHS record, eclipsing the 40’11.5″ mark she set just two weeks ago and is also the two longest triple jumps in the state this year. Gray also registered a 15.29-second time in the 100-meter hurdles for the 9th fastest time in the event in Jackson Parish and JHHS records and an 18’1.5″ distance in the long jump, good for 10th in the all-time local annals. 

Adding to the record-setting performance was her opening leg in the 4×200-meter relay, where she, along with Carmon Livingston, who, with three gold medals to her credit, was named the Girls Track Most Valuable Performer, Derryn Osborne, and Sanaa Tatum, moved into 10th place all-time with a time of 1:48.91. 

Additional gold medal performers for the Lady Tigers were Carmen Livingston in the 100 meters with a time of 13.35 seconds and Makiaya Cadet in the 400 meters with a time of 1:13.21. The JHHS girls 4×100 meter relay team of Jakhorielle Lard, Carmon Livingston, Derryn Osborne, and Sanaa Tatum also won first place. 

Earning silver medals for second-place finishes were Samone Mallard in the high jump and Sanaa Tatum in both the long jump and triple jump. Bronze medal winners for third-place finishes were Carmon Livingston in the 200 meters, Brianna Williamson in the 400 and 800 meters, Samone Mallard in the 300-meter hurdles, and the 4×400-meter relay team of Jakhorielle Lard, Derryn Osborne, Makiaya Cadet, and Brianna Williamson. 

Tigers post best finish of 2026

On the strength of gold medals by Jason Ayres in the 800 and 1600 meters, with times of 2:30.74 and 5:34.71, respectively, who was named the Boys Track Most Valuable Performer, and Lon’Trevious “Tre” Burns winning the high jump (5’10”), JHHS took second place in the Mangham Invitational for their best team finish of the year. 

Victor Johnson (20’7.5″) won second in the long jump to go along with the 4×800 meter relay team of Braylen Jones, Jason Ayres, Gregory Howard, and Kaden Whiseant to earn silver medals. Bronze medal winners for third-place finishes were King Campbell (44.13 seconds) in the 300-meter hurdles, Landon Boston (39’6.5″) in the triple jump, and the 4×400-meter relay team of Ky’Rein Bradley, Braylen Jones, Jason Ayres, and Gregory Howard.

Quitman High School traveled to Lake Charles, LA, to compete in the high school division of the prestigious McNeese Cowboy Relays, which drew 33 schools from across Louisiana. Leading the way for QHS in the meet, which was made up primarily of Class 5A and 4A schools, was Kaleigh King, who took second place in the 300-meter hurdles with a new school record time of 48.91 seconds. Kaleigh Webb was also a “podium placer” in the discus with a throw of 85’2″ that earned a bronze medal finish. In the boys’ competition, Gage Horton and Nathan Harvey set new school records, each finishing 4th in their respective races. Horton ran a 2:05.74 in the 800 meters, which is also good for 5th place all-time in Jackson Parish, while Nathan Harvey also finished in 4th place in the 300-meter hurdles with a new school record time of 40.54 seconds, the third fastest in Jackson Parish history. Horton also finished 4th in the 1600 meters with a time of 4:55.44, which is the 8th best in Jackson Parish history.

The Student/Athletes of the Week for April 5-11 from Jackson Parish School District institutions, Jonesboro-Hodge, Quitman, and Weston High Schools have been selected. Sponsored by the Jackson Parish Hospital, the award recognizes an outstanding student-athlete from each school for their academic and athletic achievements. Each award winner was chosen by a select group of faculty and staff from the representative institutions and will receive a special Jackson Parish Hospital Athlete of the Week t-shirt.  

Earning accolades this week are:

Ciara Gray – Senior on the Jonesboro-Hodge High School girls track team
Drew Browning – Senior on the Weston High School baseball team
Hudson Pullig – Senior on the Quitman High School baseball team

On April 7th, Quitman High School and the baseball program celebrated Legacy Night, during which 1987 QHS graduate and former major league pitcher Toby Borland was honored in a pre-game ceremony, and a banner that will be permanently displayed on the outfield fence was unveiled. Borland also threw out the first pitch before the Wolverines’ contest against Simsboro.

A 1987 graduate of QHS, Toby was an all-state athlete in both baseball and basketball and, more particularly, a dominant force on the pitching mound. His 4-year career at Quitman included a 22-10 record, 431 strikeouts, and a 0.95 ERA, records that still remain among the most untouchable in the program’s history. Borland’s success at Quitman led to his selection in the 27th round of the 1987 MLB draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Toby made his professional debut in 1994 and enjoyed a 9-year MLB career, pitching in 207 games primarily as a reliever and recording 211 strikeouts across several organizations, including the Phillies, Mets, Red Sox, Angels, and Marlins. Another distinction on Borland’s professional resume is being the last Phillie to wear #42 before it was retired league-wide in honor of Jackie Robinson.

The Jackson Parish School District announces that it is now time to sign up for 2026-27 Kindergarten classes. Registration can be done online at http://www.jpsb.us, or if needed, in-person assistance will be available from 3:30 – 6:30 pm on April 14th at the Jackson Parish Student Service Center, located at 440 Old Winnfield Hwy in Jonesboro.

Students currently enrolled in pre-K at a Jackson Parish school are automatically enrolled in Kindergarten.

The students in the Jackson Parish Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program, taught by Ms. Leslie Duck, recently completed their clinical rotation at Forest Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Jonesboro.

The future medical professionals not only performed essential clinical skills and developed hands-on skills and communication abilities, but also assisted residents with various activities—something they genuinely loved being a part of.

The Jackson Parish CNA program extends a special thank-you to Mrs. Sandra Billings and her wonderful team at Forest Haven for their guidance and support throughout this experience.

The students are now gearing up for their state exam. All of their hard work throughout the year—from ADL training to learning about PPE and infection control, as well as becoming CPR-certified—has prepared them for this important next step.

The Jackson Parish Golf Course held its fourth “Tuesday Scramble” of the season on April 7th, where, for the first time, the winner was decided by a scorecard playoff. 

Taking the title after shooting a round of 10 under par on the nine-hole, par-36 layout were Glen Kirkland, David Chestnut, Tommy Cruse, Roby Surber, and Dwayne “Snook” Harrell.

Relugated to second place after shooting the same score following the scorecard playoff were DJ Harrell, Zack Pickett, Spencer Duck, Daniel Rollinson, and Dylan Pickett. Coming in third place at a 9-under round were Peyton Mitchell, Sony Gill, Cody Donaldson, Wayne Smith, and Wade Wright.
