An old adage in golf is “It is not how you drive, but how you arrive.” That turned out to be true not only for the way they played on the course but also for what led to the team of Colton Anderson, Bob Cooper, and Richard Anderson claiming the championship of the annual Piney Woods 3-Man Scramble held at the Jackson Parish Golf Course on August 8-9, which saw a field of 52 teams compete for one of the top payouts in north Louisiana.

After finishing the first day of competition in a tie for third place in the Championship Flight after shooting a round of 14 under par, 58 on the par 72 layout, the threesome came back with a second-day best tying round of 59 on Sunday to end with a 117 total, which led to the title after coming out on top on a scorecard playoff over J.B. Elia, J. D. Trettin and Reeves Pullin.

It was another scorecard playoff that settled third and fourth place between the teams comprised of mostly local golfers, with first-day leaders Brad Porter, Peyton Mitchell and Keith Cosby (56-62 = 118) getting the nod over “young guns’ Eli Walker, Tayt Culpepper and Pete Simonelli, who also tied for the best score of the second day (59-59).

After finishing as one of only three teams to shoot in the 50″s on Sunday, Ram Foster, Larry Foster and Darren Sutton finished with a score of 121 (62-59) to win the First Flight by a whopping three strokes. Chris Rathburn, Nate Branch and Christ Fowler came in second place with a two-day total of 124 (63-61), one shot better than third-place Houston Fortenberry, Ridge Creech and Holt Martin (63-62).

The second and third flights also had “runaway” winners with Todd Gentry, Ryan Nelson and Mark Sutton taking the second flight by three strokes after shooting rounds of 64-62 for a 126 total and the “Booth Boys” of Austin, Troy and George winning the third flight with a score of 130 (67-63).
