The two most successful junior high basketball teams in Jackson Parish continued their winning ways on Tuesday when the Weston Junior High girls and Quitman Junior High boys both took convincing victories in the All-Jackson Parish battle in the home opener for Weston.
Weston 50 Quitman 8 (Girls): An 18-1 first quarter lead exploded into a 37-4 advantage at the break as Weston continued to enjoy one of their best seasons in recent memory by winning their 12th straight game without a loss this season. The Lady Wolves had 10 players score points, led by Bailey McCurdy, who posted a new career-high 14 points. Hannah Aldy chipped in with the Keiffer girls, with Kate and Brooklyn each scoring 5 points. Saniyah Salsberry, Shelby Johns, and Carrington Bond finished with four points each, while Isabel Morris, Ashlyn Petre, and Kylee Allen all hit a basket each. Elliot Savage scored 6, and Aaliyah Mixon tallied two for Quitman, who fell to 4-6 on the year.
Quitman 57 Weston 18 (boys): The roles were reversed in the boys contest, as it was QJH that took the commanding lead at the half by a 37-12 margin and never looked back. Aiden Reed and Luke Davis led the Wolverines’ offensive onslaught as both posted new career highs with 17 and 13 points, respectively. Kutter Blalock scored 6, Jaxon Culpepper finished with 5, and Kyree Boston scored four for the Wolverines, who improved to 9-3 on the year. Sheppard and Asher Norred both tallied three and Bentley Ponder, Cole Burton, and Sutton Vail all made two points to round out the scoring for Quitman. No individual scoring was reported by Weston, who dropped to 3-for-8 on the year.
Both Jackson Parish Junior High Schools will play in Claiborne Christian Tourney this Thursday and Friday
Quitman and Weston will travel to West Monroe this Thursday and Friday to play in the Claiborne Christian School tournament. On Thursday, September 10, the Quitman girls will open tournament play against Simsboro at 4:00 pm with the QJH boys also playing Simsboro at 5:30 pm. On Friday, the undefeated Weston girls will get things going when they face Family Community Christian School at 3:30 pm, with the Weston boys taking the court next to play host Claiborne Christian at 4:15 pm. The two schools will then square off again for a “B” game at 5:00 pm. At 6:30, it will be an All-Jackson Parish battle as the boys from Quitman and Weston will play, followed by Quitman taking on host Claiborne Christian in a girls’ battle at 7:15 pm. The two schools will play again in a boys’ contest at 8:00 pm in the tournament finale.
