There will be a Letlow representing the Louisiana Congressional 5th District after all. Julia Letlow, a Republican and the wife of former elect Luke Letlow, who defeated Lance Harris in December 5th, 2020 runoff election, will now be assuming the seat after beating closest challenger, Democrat Sandra “Candy” Christophe by better than a two to one vote margin . Her husband was scheduled to assume office on January 3, 2021, but died on December 29, 2020 of complications from COVID-19 forcing a new election to be held.
There was no runoff election to be needed this time around. After votes were tabulated in 823 of the 825 precincts in the district that comprises all or parts of 24 parishes in the state, including Jackson Parish, Letlow had 67,090 votes to 28,244 for Christophe to win nearly 40,000 votes and a 64.84% – 27.30% margin. In Jackson Parish the disparity was even wider. With 31 of 31 precincts reporting Letlow claimed 1900 of the 2705 votes cast to beat Christophe by 70.24% – 25.06%, or nearly a three to one vote margin.
It boiled down to a two person race as the two combined for 92.14% of the vote. Coming in a far distant, third place was Republican Chad Conerly who claimed only 5,482 votes or 5.30% with the other nine candidates earning only 2.56% of the votes combined. One precinct in Lincoln Parish and one in St. Landry Parish had yet to report by press time.
