2023 LLewellyn Starks Invitational to be run at JHHS on Tuesday

A representative of the glorious past and the beginning to a bright new future of JHHS track and field will come together this Tuesday, April 11th with the 2023 running of the annual Llewellyn Starks Invitational on the campus of Jonesboro-Hodge High School. 

The meet, named for the most acclaimed male track performer in JHHS history was originally scheduled for last Thursday but had to be moved due to inclement weather. 

Coming back to his roots, “LeLe” as he is affectionately called by friends and family and the meet’s namesake, will be on hand to meet and greet fans. Starks is remembered as being the 1985 Class 2A state champion and Jackson Parish record holder in the long jump, NCAA champion while at LSU and international professional track star, who was destined to be a member of the 1992 US Olympic team before suffering a devastating leg injury that ended his career. Today, Starks is a representative for Nike Corporation.  

The 11 schools that are currently registered to compete in the meet will be the  first to run on the newly resurfaced polyurethane track at Caldwell-Peacock Stadium. Schools expected to take part along with host Jonesboro-Hodge are: Choudrant, Converse, Doyline, Grant, Lakeside, Lincoln Prep, Pleasant Hill, Ringgold, Weston and Woodlawn – Shreveport. 

The meet is expected to begin with field events at 3:00pm with running events slated to start at 4:30pm. Admission is $5.00. 

JHHS participates in Mangham Invitational

With their own meet rained out, Jonesboro-Hodge hit the road this past Tuesday to compete in the Mangham Invitational. Competing against a field of 21 of the top schools from northeast Louisiana the two Tiger squads ended with eight podium placements, finishing in second place and third place four times each.

JHHS Outstanding Meet Performer

Girls – Ciara Gray: The freshman earned points in four events by coming in 2nd place in both the long jump and 300 meter hurdles, finishing 3rd in the 100 meter hurdles and 5th place in the triple jump. Honorable Mention: A’Jorianna Hoggro – 3rd place in high jump, 5th place in the long jump
Boys -Zion Gray: Senior earned points in three events with a 2nd place finish in the long jump, earning 4th place in the triple jump and coming in 5th place in the 400 meters. Honorable Mention: Savantez Phillips – 2nd place in 110 meter hurdles, ran leg on 3nd place winning 4×200 relay team
