“Main Street” flower beds get a facelift thanks to Wilda Smith

You have to give the girl credit! She will tell you she doesn’t deserve it but without her spearheading the effort, the drive down Jimmie Davis Boulevard aka “Main Street” in Jonesboro wouldn’t be the same.

“That “girl” being referred to is Jackson Parish Chamber of Commerce Director Wilda Smith who declares she is “semi-retired” but works tirelessly in promoting Jonesboro and Jackson Parish.

Her latest endeavor has been to revitalize the median on Main Street. With the completion of cleaning, weeding and planting of new roses and daylilies in the flower beds at both ends it can now be said that her mission has been accomplished.

Previously, Smith orchestrated the effort to have hanging baskets at the intersections, have the water fountain repaired and provide benches for patrons to downtown to enjoy.

Smith not only provided the impetuous and direction for this latest project she was also out in the unbearable heat on her hands and knees pulling weeds and planting flowers. In her typical fashion, our very own “Wonder Woman” refused to take credit.

“I asked for volunteers and I’m very appreciative to the three who showed up,” said Smith. “They worked circles around this old lady.”

Wilda Smith may call herself an “old lady” but she has the spirit of a “young girl.” Most of all she devotion and dedication to her community that deserves praise and admiration.
