
Weston High School ventured to Calvin this past Tuesday for a pre-season contest in preparation for the upcoming 2023-24 LHSAA prep basketball season. Four games were played beginning with a pair of girls and boys Junior Varsity contests followed by the two varsity teams squaring off.
Weston 51 Calvin 45 (Varsity Boys) – Tait Henderson scored 22 points on the strength of an 8 of 10 night from the charity stripe to lead the Wolves. Bryce Zehr also reached double digits with 11 points and Tommy Walker scored six of his eight points in the third quarter to help Weston outscore Calvin 17-6 and break open a closed game at the half. Daniel Watlington added five and Nathan Wages and LaJavion Harris chipped in with three and two each.
Weston 19 Calvin 3 (JV Boys) In the contest that was played for only two quarters, the Wolves suffocating defense allowed only three Calvin free throws. Dawson Clifton scored 8 to lead Weston with Cole Otwell adding four. Brody Tidwell made three points and both Daniel Williams and Abram Toms hit a basket apiece.
Calvin 55 Weston 51 (Varsity Girls) Calvin made the last charge to take the narrow victory. In the contest that had more swings than a school playground, Weston jumped out to a 16-7 first quarter lead thanks to six points by Faith Beamesderfer and five more from Lexi Millien. Ansley Aldy and Nadia Siadek chipped in with three and two points each. The nine point lead turned into a five point deficit at the half as Calvin outpointed the Lady Wolves 22-7 in the second frame. It was Weston’s turn again in the third as Millien, Beamesderfer and Carlynn Waters all nailed three pointers and Carly Jo Griffin scored four. Lainee Trosclair also hit a basket as the Lady Wolves took a 42-41 lead heading into the final frame. Millien led in scoring with 15, followed by Beamesderfer with 11 and Aldy with six, on a pair of treys. Griffin finished with five with Siadek and Jacie Ledford making four each. Trosclair and Waters would end with three points each.
Weston 13 Calvin 11 (JV Girls) Carly Jo Griffin scored six and Carlynn Waters four, including a key last period three pointer. Livi Otwell nailed a basket and Raelynn Shell made a free throw to round out the scoring.
