The Town of Jonesboro Board of Aldermen made official the expected water rate increase at their regularly scheduled monthly meeting held on Tuesday, September 10th at the Charles H. Garrett Community Center.

Prior to the vote to increase water rates for consumers of the Jonesboro Water System a Public Hearing was held to allow for questions and concerns to be heard from the public.

In additional business taken by panel members James Ginn, Devin Flowers, Nia Evans, Robbie Siadek and Robert Hunter, the abatement of nuisance on 207 Vinson Street was approved as well as amendments to the budget.

The session started with the agenda, minutes from last month’s session and the financial statement from the July and August meetings being approved. Reports from department heads of Public Works, Fire Department and Police Department were heard before comments by the Town Council and Mayor J. “Spike” Harris closed the session.

Tigers fall to Class 4A West Ouachita

(Clay Williams – JPJ)

Legendary wrestler Ric Flair famously said, “To be the man, you have to beat the man.” That is one of the best ways to explain why Class 1A Jonesboro-Hodge would schedule a school with the size and skill of Class 4A West Ouachita.

While the Tigers did not “beat the man” on Thursday night, they did leave the 47-0 loss battle-tested and having learned lessons that will help them throughout the remainder of the season.

J-Hodge arrived at the game with an active roster of 28 players and 4 seniors. West Ouachita on the other hand, had a whopping 97 players and 23 seniors. It felt like a true battle of David vs Goliath at “The Rez”, the nickname of the West Ouachita Chief football field. The Tigers played the role of David well, and never backed down from the fight for the entire 48 minutes, regardless of what the score would say at the end of the game.

The Tigers won the coin toss and elected to receive, hoping to get the offense going early and set the tone of the game. After a few hard designed runs by quarterback Dakota Knox, the Tigers had to settle for a punt on their opening drive. The home-standing Chiefs set themselves up in great field position by returning the punt to the J-Hodge 7-yard line.

Two runs of not much positive yardage against the stout J-Hodge defensive line set up West Ouachita with an early 3rd down. Senior Fullback MJ Owens bulldozed his way into the end zone, and the PAT was good to make it a 7-0 Chiefs lead.

It was all Chiefs from that point forward. While most teams would want to just completely forget about a game like this, the Tigers had plenty to take away from it to help educate and better the team.

“We knew going in that we had a huge task ahead of us,” said JHHS head coach Terrance Blankenship. “Many said before the season that this is probably the best team that West Ouachita has had in their history. They proved that they are very good.”

Offensively, not much went right for the Tigers overall on Thursday night. West Ouachita’s defense was big, experienced, and deep enough to consistently rotate in players. The biggest positive takeaways from the offensive side of the ball would be the legs from QB Dakota Knox, and the inclusion of wide receiver Christian McGuire in the run game. Both players showed numerous flashes on the ground that give the Tiger fans something to be excited about going forward.

Defensively, the Tigers mostly held their own, outside of some big plays that were real back breakers. Sophomore standout Dylan Hayes continued to provide consistent pressure on the opposing QB. Junior linebacker Landon Boston played with a relentless motor and was always near the ball. Senior Ken’Wuan Atkins forced and recovered a fumble to keep his outstanding start to the season going.

The heart, fight, and attitude of this Tiger team can be shown by their last defensive drive. Hopelessly behind

late in the 4th quarter and facing the second string of West Ouachita (which would be more like starters on most 1A schools in the state), J-Hodge wanted to end on a positive note. They did just that by standing strong forcing a turnover on downs with a little over one minute left on the game clock, as the Chiefs were trying to get one more score on the board.

Many teams would just roll over and let the opposition waltz in for as many points as they wanted in a situation like that. But the pride of this Jonesboro-Hodge football team was too strong to allow that to happen, and that’s something that will inevitably translate to success when consistently displayed.

The Tigers, now 0-2 on the season, will be on the road again next week, this time taking on the Delhi Charter Gators out of district 2-2A who is now 2-0 on the season after beating Lakeview 44-0 on Friday. Kickoff will be at 7:00 on Friday Night.

QHS hosting State Championship Ring Ceremony on Tuesday

After the baseball, softball and golf team won state championships, the spring of 2024 will forever be remembered as the best period of athletics in the history of Quitman High School.

This Tuesday, those memories will be rekindled when the players and coaches from the three title winning programs will receive their state championship rings. The administration and staff along with the QHS athletic department invite the public to show your support to the participants.

The presentation will take place in a special ceremony being held between the junior high girls and boys basketball games against Castor Junior High being played in the QHS gymnasium. The first game is expected to be tipped off at 5:00 pm.

Local Junior High Basketball Teams Play at Home on Tuesday

Fans of the Quitman and Weston Junior High girls and boys basketball teams are in for a treat as both will play host to games this coming Tuesday, September 17th. Claiborne Christian Tournament Results

Unlike the previous four tournaments that the two local junior high schools have played in this season, that were double elimination styled with a tourney victor crowned, the Claiborne Christian Tourney was played in a round robin format, where each of the four schools participating played two games each.

That still didn’t stop the Quitman Junior High boys from continuing their winning ways. By beating both Choudrant and host Claiborne Christian of their games, the youthful Wolverines stayed perfect in tournament competition at 14-0 and ran their season record to a sparkling 17-1 overall. The two teams from Weston both went 1-1 with the girls record now standing at 6-7 and the boys 7-6. The Quitman girls lost both of their contests to fall to 5-7 on the year.

Thursday, Sept. 12

Quitman 37 Choudrant 24 (Boys): In a rematch of the Choudrant tournament finals a week ago, the opening game in the this one wasn’t near as close as with four of the starting five scoring points, QJH jumped out to a 12-2 lead and never looked back. Hayden Seymore led the Wolverines in scoring with 9 points followed by Eli Jackson with 8. Kaleb Maxwell had 7 points, Luke Rowe scored six, Lucas Leach finished with three and Connor May tallied two as six of the eight players that played scored.

Choudrant 20 Quitman 17 (Girls): After three quarters, Quitman held a 13-10 lead but Choudrant outscored the Lady Wolverines 10-5 in the final frame to steal the victory in what turned out to be a defensive battle. Kynleigh Leach and London Burks both scored five to lead QJH in scoring. Ella Simonelli had three points and both Sophia Kliebert and Audrina Martin finished with two points each.

Weston 30 Simsboro 25 (Boys): Malachi Harris poured in a season high 20 points, including six in the first quarter to pace the Wolves to a 12-3 lead that they never relinquished. Leyton Younse chipped in with four points and the trio of Eli Henderson, Bryce Tolar, and Colt Guyotte all tallied two points each.

Simsboro 35 Weston 22 (Girls): After falling behind 9-1 in the first quarter, Weston rallied to make it 14-11 at the half but that was as close as the Lady Wolves would come. Teegan Hall scored a season high 11 points to lead Weston followed by Rachel Bandy with five. Tessa Reeves chipped in with three, Ada-Clair Tidwell had two and Saniyah Saulsberry made a free throw.

Friday, September 13th

Weston 32 Quitman 28 (Girls): In the all Jackson Parish contest, Weston jumped out to an 11-2 lead and held on for the four point victory. Rachel Bandy made 7 of 12 free throws and added two more baskets to lead the Lady Wolves with 11 points. Teegan Hall scored seven and Kate Keiffer finished with five points. Gracie Gray, Addison Faulkner and Tessa Reeves all chipped in with three points each. Audrina Martin led Quitman with 11 points followed by Ella Simonelli with six. London Burks and Sophia Kliebert both had four points and Kynleigh Leach rounded out the Lady Wolverines scoring with three.

Quitman 38 Claiborne Christian 30 (Boys): The Wolverines outscored the tourney host 18-12 in the second half to put away the upset minded Crusaders who trailed only 20-18 at the half. Hayden Seymore led Quitman with 16 points that included three pointers in both the pivotal third and fourth quarters. Eli Johnson also reached double figures with 10 points, Lucas Leach made five and Luke Rowe added four points. Tucker Goss chipped in a basket and Kaleb Maxwell made a free throw for the Wolverines.

Claiborne Christian 32 Weston 2 (Boys): A 10-2 first quarter deficit was to much to overcome as the Wolves fell to the tourney host. Leyton Younse scored five points to lead WJH followed closely by Colton Otwell and Malachi Harris with six each. Bryce Tolar had four, Jacolby Lowe finished with two and Eli Henderson made a free throw.

Former Major Leaguer’s Speak at Weston High School Baseball Breakfast

There is no better way to be the best than hear from the best.

That is what the Weston High School baseball team was afforded on Friday when two of the best baseball players to come out of north Louisiana spoke to the Wolves during their annual Wolves Baseball Breakfast.

The 2024-25 Wolves baseball team got to hear words of inspiration and instruction from a pair of ex-major leaguers in former Quitman High School standout, Toby Borland, and West Monroe native Braden Bristo.

The team meeting focused on three words: fear, time, and love. These guys were encouraged to never fear the game, cherish the moments with their team, and to learn to love the people you play with.

Borland, who played for five teams over his 10 year major league baseball career from 1994-2004 and Bristo who played for Tampa Bay and Detroit, shared very inspiring and personal stories with the team and explained that there will always be valleys and peaks in life, but that they should trust God in the midst of it all and remember He is in control.

Weston High School head baseball coach Joey Kemp, gives thanks to the parents of the players on the team for putting the breakfast together and to Wooly’s for donating food.

“We are blessed to have a wonderful support system,” said Kemp. “It’s more than about baseball.”

J-HMS beats Arcadia for first win of the season

Jonesboro-Hodge Middle School beat Arcadia Junior High 26-22 this past Tuesday in what will be remembered as a day of “firsts”. The victory by the Tigers was the first of the season and also the first career victory by first year head coach Max Martinez.

In the contest that was supposed to be the season opener back on August 29th, the junior high Tigers got huge efforts from King Campbell, who rushed for 156 yards and two touchdowns and Raylon Bradford who had a touchdown catch and a “pick six” interception on defense. Triston Smith also was mentioned for his outstanding effort on defense.

“There are some things that we need to fix in practice but overall I was impressed with the effort given as the guys played hard for all four quarters,” said Martinez.

J-HMS, now 1-1 on the season, will next be in action on Thursday, September 19th when they play host to Lincoln Prep.

JHHS Nursing Class Students Learning Important Career Skills

There are many wonderful aspects of the high school experience but one of the most important is the education gained that helps prepare students for their respective career choices.

At Jonesboro-Hodge High School, the students in the Introduction to Nursing classes have been busy learning various skills that prepares them for their professional medical life.

So far this year, the students have learned how to safely transfer residents and properly apply a gait belt and completed the communication unit where the students learned how to properly communicate with not just residents but other care team members. They are currently learning all about Infection Prevention and Control measures that  includes practicing the proper use of PPE (Personnel Protective Equipment).

Ponderings……

Your Muffler

“We don’t understand it, but your muffler is disintegrating from the inside.”

For once the description of the sound the truck was making was congruent with the sound the truck made. Many times, you try to describe a noise to the service technician and the vehicle won’t cooperate, but Saturday it did.

“Eventually your muffler will disintegrate, and your truck will become very loud.”

There are two ways you know you are old. The first way is when you don’t like the idea of your truck being loud. When you are old, you want the muffler to silence the sound. Loud and old don’t mix, whether in music or in clothing selection.

The other way one notes their arrival at old age happens in elevators. If you hear Muzak playing in the elevator, and it is the same music of your adolescence, you are old. If your parents said, “Turn that garbage down!” And you hear that music playing at the doctor’s office, you are old.

Saturday, Muzak was playing at the car dealership as the service man described the disintegrating muffler.

I am old.

I was wondering if a loud truck would be accepted in a funeral procession. Would the truck be heard pulling into the parking lot on Sunday morning? What would the Baptists think? What would the Catholics say?

How much to fix a disintegrating muffler? It was going to be expensive because rotting from the inside was not covered under any warranty.

How is your muffler?

The diagnosis of a muffler disintegrating from the inside was spiritually enlightening.
Do you know what it feels like to rot from the inside? Discouragement is interior rot. You start out with faith, hope, and love and if you don’t constantly stay centered in Christ, the world can whittle away at all three. You start disintegrating spiritually.

Discouragement most often happens when you get something fixed into your head and heart rather than seeking out what God would have you do. Most often you are discouraged when God is not doing things your way.

The other thing you might discover is that when your muffler disintegrates you become loud. That seems to be the gist of public discourse today, just getting louder than the other side. Conversation has been replaced by competition and ideas are rapidly giving way to idiocy.

There is a verse of scripture that comforts and confronts at the same time. The same eight words can bug the fool out people with disintegrating mufflers and offer hope to those who want their muffler restored. If you need faith, hope, and love restored, hear the word of the Psalmist:

“Be still and know that I am God.”

I get it, Lord.

Will you help me repair my muffler?

Glynn Harris Outdoors and Fishing Report

Giles New Book For Turkey Hunters A Must Read

I have known Mike Giles since he first tried his hand at writing outdoors columns. I have followed his path and watched him progress from a fledgling writer into a genuine professional who not only writes columns for newspapers and magazines but has successfully delved into writing top notch books.

Passion of the Wild was Giles’ first book published in 2013 and he has just released his second book, Legends of the Spring, Masters of the Call.

Not only is he a fine wordsmith, Giles is an avid hunter and fisherman with his love for turkey hunting emerging as his favorite thing to do in the realm of hunting. Personally, I have been amazed not only in his ability to outsmart a number of wary gobblers but by the fact he could leave his turkey calls at home because he can make all the calls necessary to fool a gobbler without the use of mechanical calls. He can produce them all with his voice.

His latest book involves his interviewing some of the best turkey hunters around the country and having them share with him a favorite hunt they may have had. The stories that emerged have been translated into 21 chapters with some of the best known hunters telling about what they did – or didn’t do – to waylay gobblers.

Avid hunter and renowned wildlife photographer, Tes Jolly, tells a story that will tug at your heart strings. We first learn who she is, having been reared by parents who were avid hunters and her frustration at a hunting club rule that was for men only. A “tomboy”at the age of nine, Tes’ parents came up with a ploy that enabled her to get to hunt. They dressed her in oversized clothes and a floppy hat and was given the nickname of “Harvey”, enabling her to fit in undetected with her brothers as she enjoyed success as a hunter.

Jolly’s interest over the years has zeroed in on mentoring and passing on the hunting tradition to women, youth and the physically challenged. In 1998, she was introduced to Ashley, a 10 year old girl, who had endured surgery for a brain tumor but wanted to turkey hunt. Jolly was able to travel to Florida to take Ashley hunting and watched her down a big gobbler. Sadly, she returned to Florida a few months later to pay last respects to Ashley who lost her battle with brain cancer.

There is a story about avid turkey hunter and writer, Jim Spencer describing his frustrating hunt for a hard-headed Texas Rio Grand gobbler. The way Spencer tells a story will captivate the reader as he overcame all sorts of obstacles to finally at the last minute, bested the stubborn Texas gobbler.

Then there’s Med Palmer’s story about hunting with his son, Gunner, who was lost in a boating accident. The following season was rough on Palmer but he felt he had to go hunting in honor of his son.

“What are the odds of me going into the woods before daylight and realize I was sitting against the same tree Gunner had sat by on his last hunt when he killed his last gobbler,” said Palmer.

Space limitations prohibit me sharing some of the other fascinating stories but you can get your own hard cover copy of “Legends of the Spring; Masters of the Call by finding Michael O. Giles on Facebook or emailing him at mikegiles18@comcast.net.

If you’re a turkey hunter, this is one book that is hard to put down once you start readying and one you absolutely must have for your library.

Confession Brings Relief

You know that small speck of dust (or ‘who knows what’) that gets in your eye…

Well…I’ve discovered that things can also get in between teeth and under my tender gums. I learned the hard way. While eating popcorn, a small piece of the corn’s paper thin hull became lodged there. I had no clue or discomfort for a few days. I began to suspect some food was stuck when soreness began.

My next problem was finding the culprit. Usually a routine brushing and rinse with water dislodges small bits of food; not this time. I tried floss but once more got nothing. The problem had worsened from soreness to pain and I feared I might need to see our family dentist. I prayed and tried floss again. That time I was successful.

What will it take to make me aware of the log hidden and lodged in my eye?

“Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye (Matthew 7:3-5 ESV).”

Ouch!

Correction is painful but confession brings relief.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9 ESV).”
