Classes Begin Wednesday, August 20th, for Jackson Parish Public Schools

Classes begin on Wednesday, August 20th, for the five Jackson Parish School District institutions of learning, meaning that the roads will be crowded early in the morning, and a tremendous amount of activity will be taking place in school zones.

To help keep local youth safe during this frenzied day of activity and all school days that will follow, the Jackson Parish Chamber of Commerce has issued the guidelines shown below for all to follow.

School Bus Safety Rules for Drivers in Louisiana:

Stop For School Buses: In Louisiana, drivers must stop for school buses with flashing red lights and extended stop arms, regardless of their direction of travel, unless the highway is divided by a physical barrier like a concrete median. Violations can result in fines up to $500 and potential license suspension.
Divided Highway Exception: On a divided highway, only traffic moving in the same direction as the bus is required to stop if there is a physical barrier like a concrete median, ditch, or grassy median.
Stop Distance: Stop at least 30 feet from the school bus.
Clearance: Be aware of the “danger zone” around the bus (approximately 10 feet) and allow plenty of space for children to enter and exit.
School Zone Speed Limits: Adhere to posted speed limits in school zones, which are often 20 mph or lower.
No Passing: Do not pass other vehicles within a school zone.
Hands-Free Zones: Avoid using cell phones (including texting and calling) in school zones. Louisiana designates these as hands-free zones.

Bus Stop Safety for Students

Arrive Early: Students should arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive.
Wait at a Safe Distance: Wait at least 10 feet away from the curb, or the edge of the road, away from the bus stop.
Boarding and Exiting: Use handrails when boarding and exiting the bus, and wait for the driver’s signal before crossing the street.
Cross in Front of the Bus: Always cross the street in front of the bus, never behind it, and after ensuring the driver sees you.
Do not Run to or from the Bus: Avoid running to or from the bus, as this increases the risk of accidents.

Understanding Louisiana’s School Bus Stop Regulations

In Louisiana, observing the speed limit in school zones is crucial for the safety of students and pedestrians. State law imposes a maximum speed of 20 mph in school zones.
