Quitman Junior High Basketball Tourney to be held August 28-29

Quitman Junior High School will host their annual tournament on Thursday and Friday, August 28-29. Six teams are slated for play, including host Quitman, Weston, Dodson, Castor, Claiborne Christian, and Choudrant.

Not only will local fans of junior high basketball get the opportunity to see what the future holds for Quitman and Weston varsity teams, but the answers to several current questions will be discovered.

Will either the girls’ or boys’ teams from Quitman Junior High School win their own tournament? Will the Weston Junior High boys stay undefeated and win their second straight tournament title? Will Choudrant and Claiborne Christian take advantage of their first-round byes?

Tuesday Tilts

Two new streaks were started, and another continued as both Quitman and Weston hit the road on Tuesday for junior high tilts against Choudrant and Castor respectively. The Lady Wolves won their first game of the season 28-18, while the Weston boys continued their early-season domination by winning by a 46-11 margin to go to 4-0 on the season. For the Quitman Lady Wolverines the new streak that was started wasn’t as enjoyable as QJH lost their first game of the year 37-31 after winning their first three played. No score was reported in the QJH/Choudrant boys game.

Weston 28 Castor 18 (girls) – A suffocating defensive effort that didn’t allow Castor to score more than five points in any of the four quarters lifted head coach Jennifer Tolar and the Lady Wolves to their first victory of the 2025 season. Rachel Bandy went 4/6 from the free throw line and hit a pair of baskets to lead Weston in scoring with 8 points. Saniyah Saulsberry also came up big with a new season best six points, while Mallory Malone, Don’Nia Spence, and Kate Keiffer all pitched in with four points each. Laken Borders also got her first points of the season with a fourth-quarter field goal.

Weston 46 Castor 11 (boys) – The venue was different, but the results were the same as WJH blew Castor away for the second time in less than one week. As was the case in waltzing to the Dodson Tournament title this past weekend, it was a superb effort on both sides of the court that led to the Wolves’ fourth straight victory to open the season. Weston scored in double figures in the first three quarters before head coach Jacob Otwll emptied his bench with Weston up 45-11. On the defensive side of the ball, the Wolves also came up big once again as they held their opponent to single digits in all four quarters for the third game in a row, and the second time against Castor. A pair of three pointers led to a new WJH individual scoring best of 17 points by Leyton Younse, and Eli Henderson poured in 10 to also reach “double figures” in points. Colten Otwell was just one point behind with nine, while Andrea Spence scored six, and both Cason Conn and Bryce Tolar chipped in two points each.

Choudrant 37 Quitman 31 (Girls) – Homestanding Choudrant jumped out to an 11-2 lead that held up despite a determined fourth quarter rally to saddle the Lady Wolverines with their first loss of the season. Ella Simonelli scored 11 points, including 7 in the fourth quarter, which saw QJH outscore Choudrant 15 to 8 to nearly cut the deficit in half. Audrina Martin also had a big game with 10 points while Amelia Stagg scored 5 first-quarter points, Bella Caskey tallied three and Kynleigh Leach hit a four quarter basket to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolverines.
