One of the first things you notice when you attend a football game at Delhi Charter High School is their attempt to resemble the University of Florida by using the “Gators” as their moniker, having the same blue and orange color scheme on their uniforms, and even calling their football field the “Swamp”.

After the 50-6 dismantling executed by Jonesboro-Hodge this past Friday night that moved the Tigers to 2-0 for the first time since 2020, Tiger supporters think of the DCHS on-campus gridiron as the “Memory Maker”.

Two years ago, JHHS visited Delhi Charter, and despite losing a thrilling contest, Christian McGuire set a new Tiger single-game receiving record of 230 yards, and Dakota Knox moved into second all-time in single-game passing yards with 295.

This time, Tigers running back/defensive back Lon’trevious “Tre” Burns enjoyed a “game for the ages,” delivering one of the best individual all-around performances in Tiger history and setting what is believed to be yet another school record.

His final individual statistics were simply “eye-popping.” Offensively, Burns rushed for 108 yards in only 9 carries while scoring twice on runs of 12 and 61 yards and also ran for a two-point conversion. He added another touchdown on a 65-yard catch and scored on three straight Tiger possessions.

Burns led JHHS with 8 tackles that included what is believed to be a single-game school record of FIVE sacks. He actually should have been given six, but despite corralling the DCHS quarterback behind the line, it was ruled as no gain, coming at the end of his making five tackles in a row. He also forced a fumble and recovered another, which he almost returned for a touchdown.

“It was without a doubt his best game as a Tiger and one of the better all-around performances by a player that I can remember,” said JHHS head coach Terrance Blankenship. “But he wasn’t the only one who had a great game.”

The coach, who saw his team move to 2-0 on the year for only the second time in his school record 14-year tenure, was right about that! Several Tigers deserve special mention for their help in scoring the most points and securing the biggest one-sided victory since the 51-0 win over Bunkie in 2021.

King Campbell – Completed 4 of 8 attempts for 143 yards and 2 touchdowns, passed for a two-point conversion, and made 2 point-after-touchdown (PAT) kicks.
JuQuan Qualls – Returned a punt 49 yards for a touchdown and scored on a 2-point conversion catch.
Michael Malone – Recovered 2 fumbles and returned one 15 yards for a touchdown.
Reginald Hemphill – Made a career-best 5 tackles, including two for a loss and one sack.
Dylan Hayes – Recorded 2 tackles for a loss and one sack, blocked a punt, and recovered a fumble for a touchdown.
Channing Gray Jr. – Caught a 26-yard touchdown pass.

As a team, JHHS recorded 303 yards in total offense and was an impressive 4/5 in third-down conversions, while the defense limited Delhi Charter to just 166 yards and only five first downs, and forced two turnovers, both of which ended up in Tiger touchdowns.

“I am very pleased with the total team effort,” concluded Blankenship. “It was the kind of showing that you don’t really expect this early in the season.”

Next week! Always the most anticipated game of the year, JHHS will travel to Winnfield to take on its oldest rival for the 100th time in the series, one of the oldest and longest in LHSAA history. On a side note, this is the first time in recent memory that both teams enter the matchup with a 2-0 record. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at Dokes-Walker Stadium in Winnfield.
