O’Brian Calahan Hosts Annual Basketball Camp for Youth

While celebrating his 20 year class reunion, O’Brian Calahan, the founder and CEO of Only Basketball Elite (O.B.E.), hosted his annual basketball camp in the Boys Gymnasium at Jonesboro-Hodge High School on October 7. The goal of the camp was to not only arm youngsters with fundamental skills for the court, but also with necessary lessons on character, perseverance, and respect that can be used for life.

“I love giving back to my hometown,” Calahan said. “It is nostalgic to be on the court where I had some of the best times of my life. I couldn’t wait to be a J-HHS Tiger and to build on the athletic successes that those before me brought to the school and to the community.”

While at J-HHS, Calahan played varsity all four years where he earned All State, District MVP, and All District 1st and 2nd Team honors. He also played an integral part in helping the Tigers earn a spot in the Class 2A Top 28 Boys’ Tournament in 2002. After graduation, Calahan played collegiate basketball and graduated from
Tennessee Temple University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management.

Harlan Hall, a freshman at Desoto High School in Glenn Heights, Texas, was one of the participants in the camp comprised of youth from the ages of 5-18.

“I learned better defense, such as tracing and watching where the ball may go depending on what play is being run,” Hall said. “I can use [these techniques] to lock up my opponent and beat him at his own game.”

Holding this camp was a team effort. Individuals that served as coaches are Asante Belton (J-HHS, Class of 2014), Michael Burks (J-HHS, Class of 2011), LaQuinton Calahan (J-HHS, Class of 2010), Shan Jackson (J-HHS, Class of 1999), and Antonio Malone (J-HHS, Class of 1982). Gromika Palmer (J-HHS, Class of 1995) also provided tremendous support.

Burks, Calahan, and Malone all played on JHHS teams that advanced to the LHSAA state finals.

Calahan is the proud husband of the former Brittany Powell, and they have two adorable, energetic children. The family resides in the Greater Baton Rouge area.
