Prep Baseball Report: Quitman and Weston end week with wins

Quitman and Weston ended the week on a strong note with both baseball teams taking tournament victories on the road on Saturday. The wins offset hardships earlier in the week that saw the Wolverines fall in their opener of the Many Tournament and Weston losing their first two games in the East Ascension / Zachary Tournament.

By virtue of playing four Division I teams, including those ranked #1, #4 and #7 and a Division III school, Weston enters the week ranked #8 in Division IV, despite having the only losing record in the top ten at 2-3 on the year. Quitman sits one spot behind at #9 with a 2-1 record.

Thursday, Feb. 22

East Ascension 7 Weston 0: The Wolves could manage only one hit against the 4th ranked Spartans in the opener of the prestigious EA / Zachary tournament. Tayt Culpepper did a good job of keeping Weston close allowing only five hits and only two earned runs over five innings of work. Tait Henderson got the Wolves only hit, while Colton Blundell also drew a walk.

Many 5 Quitman 4: A two out, two run homerun by Many after an error put a runner on base, tied the score in the bottom of the fifth and then the Tigers won it and then another error after back to back singles gave the tourney host the winning run. Quitman twice held early leads heading into the fateful frame. The first was a 1-0 advantage after Hudson Pullig’s first inning double scored Kace West who had reached on and error in the top of the first. After Many had tied the score at 1-1 in the second, Quitman struck again, this time scoring three runs after batting around, including getting five runners on after two outs. Pullig led QHS with two hits while West, John Raegan Hasley and Braden Hobbs all got singles. Hayden Davis was the hard luck loser going five innings without allowing an earned run.

Tayt Culpepper knocked in Braden Theriot with a run in the top of the fourth but it wasn’t enough to keep the game going after Weston could do no more damage

Quitman 18 Zwolle 2: Hudson Pullig’s triple that scored three runs in the top of the third was the big blow but it was 12 Zwolle errors that gave Quitman most of their runs in their final game of the Many Tournament. Ian Tilley and Asher Shultz also hit doubles and drove in two runs each as did Jake Potts and Braden Hobbs. Pete Simonelli pitched the first two innings to gain the victory and helped his own cause by scoring three runs. John Raegan Hasley also turned in an impressive performance on the bump, striking out six in two innings of work.

Jackson Parish Recreation Board to open bids for new Expo Hall on Monday

Anyone who is 30 years old or older in Jackson Parish will remember the days when there used to be an annual rodeo held in at the Fairgrounds in Jonesboro. It was one of the most exciting weeks of the year as dozens of locals competed in the events and gave performances in front of hundreds who flocked to the arena each and every night.

After nearly two decades of being without, Jackson Parish now looks to be in line to have their rodeo once again. Not only that, many other activities and events that require a large, open air facility can now be planned.

It is still a little while yet before the vision becomes a reality but the Jackson Parish Recreation Board is expected to get the proverbial ball rolling this Monday, February 26th. That is when at their monthly meeting that will be held at 6:00 pm in the conference room of the JPRD Administrative Board office.

Highlighting the agenda will be the opening of bids for the construction of the planned Expo Hall to be built at the JPRD Sports Complex, located on Hwy 4 east of Jonesboro.

“This board has worked diligently for many months to get us to this point,” said JPRD Director Tommy Smith. “It has been a long time in coming and I am excited to see this step being taken.”

Tons of Runs! Prep Softball Recap

With four more victories this past week, the season opening winning streak has now reached 8 games for Quitman, who is now the #1 ranked team in Division V among “non-select” schools.  Just down the road, fellow Jackson Parish school and district 1B competitor, Weston, continued their “win one big, lose one big” routine to end the week with a 2-2 record.

Quitman 4 Glenbrook 3: Maggie Guyotte slapped a single up the middle to score Anna Leach in the bottom of the seventh inning for the walk-off win. For the first time this year Quitman trailed after the third inning but Hallie Kate Pullig walked and scored on a double by Kinsley Ponder in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 3 apiece, setting up Guyotte’s heroics. Leach and Madison Chaplin scored in the third on a single by Cali Deal to give QHS a 2-1 lead but Glenbrook came back to score a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Brenna Lamkin threw three innings of one hit ball to pick up the win in relief of Deal who struck out six in four innings in the circle.

Overtime Upset! Quitman ousted from boys basketball playoffs in first round

Something about playing Quitman High School seems to bring out the best in the Hornbeck boys basketball team. After slipping into the LHSAA Division V “non-select” playoffs with a #26 seed, the third lowest among teams that qualified for postseason play, the Hornets pulled off a 65-63, first round upset of #7 seed Quitman in overtime.

The victory marks the second time this season that Hornbeck, who entered the first round playoff contest with a 12-20 record, has beaten the Wolverines this year following their 65-57 victory back on December 1st.

The loss this past Friday was especially painful for the Wolverines. Not only did it end the season, the way they lost was totally unexpected compared to the way they played throughout the year to compile a 21-9 record going in.

The “calling cards” for the Wolverines this season was their tremendous shooting ability and their keen ball control. Over their 30 games heading into the playoffs, six of their top seven rotational players had made over 50% of their shots. The other was at 48% and as a team, QHS had posted an impressive 52% field goal shooting percentage. Furthermore, Quitman averaged more assists than turnovers on the year.

Then at the worst times possible their season long strength turned into liabilities.

For three and a half quarters, Quitman was copying their script of success, when suddenly with a 54-49 lead, the shots quit falling. This included three free throws down the stretch that went awry that could have clinched the game in regulation. The way the game ended made matters even worse. With the score tied at 63-63 in the overtime period and Quitman in possession of the ball with only about 5 seconds left in overtime an errant pass was stolen and taken in for a game winning layup.

riley duck 2One positive taken from the game was that Riley Duck, shown at right, closed out his Wolverine basketball career in grand fashion. Entering the contest with a 5.8 scoring average, the QHS senior saved his best for last, posting a career high 14 points on 6 of 9 shooting that included making 2 of 3 from the three point line.

Brayden Smith also played extremely well, also finishing with 14 points, his second highest total of the year and well above his 7.9 points per game average. Logan Ponder led Quitman with 15 points and both Eli Walker and Noah Leach ended with eight apiece. Braden Martin and Gavyn Caskey chipped in with two points each.

Franklin finalizes the basketball season for JHHS boys

After finishing the year with a 5-19 record and making the LHSAA Division IV postseason bracket for “non-select” schools as a #27 seed, Jonesboro-Hodge wasn’t expected to stay in the playoffs long. They weren’t. With their 80-45 victory, #6 seed, Franklin High School made sure of that in the first round played this past Friday evening.

The contest was a microcosm of the 2023-24 season for JHHS as the Tigers once again had trouble scoring, managing only 7 points in the second quarter and 19 by the half. Meanwhile Franklin scored 20 in both quarters to put the game on ice by the end of the first half.

To their credit JHHS put together one of their better scoring periods in recent games, compiling 17 points in the third quarter but it was too little to late to save the season from being ended. Franklin now moves on to hold another home game, this time against #11 see South Plaquemines on Tuesday, February 27th in the second round while JHHS finishes the season with 20 or more losses for the second year in a row.

Future is promising! If there is a silver lining to the dark cloud that the Tigers have been under it is that several young players proved the future could be bright for JHHS. This includes Ariy’un Bradford and freshman Michael Malone who scored 9 points each and Samuel Combs who finished with seven points. Daelen Boston led the Tigers with 12 points in the game.

Saline boys eliminated! Third time against Georgetown no charm

There are several quotes and adages about playing a team for the third time. One is that the “third time is a charm”.  Another is that it is hard to beat a team three times in a row.

Neither of the above rang true for Saline in the first round of the Division V “non-select” playoffs as they fell to Georgetown 58-45, their third loss in as many weeks to their district 2C rival.

By virtue of their victory, #16 Georgetown improves to 27-15 on the year and earns a date against #1 seed, Zwolle. Saliine, which was seeded at #17 ends the year with a 20-14 overall record.

The hope for the Bobcats was that the return of point guard Gavyn Dailey, who was out with an injury for the first two contests against Georgetown, would change their fortunes. For the first three quarters it looked as it may indeed make a difference as  Saline was only one point down at 46-45. For the third time in a row though, Georgetown came out and won the fourth quarter, this time by a 22-10 margin.

Eli Ferguson led the Bobcats in scoring with 12 points, followed by Dailey chipping in with 11 and Maddox Williams scoring nine. Trent Ledbetter finished with five points and JerCourtney Loyd had three. Connor Roberts and Jay Nash made two points apiece and Elijah Calloway made a free throw to round out the scoring.

Jackson Parish Library’s “Retired” Bookmobile Finds a New Home

After serving the residents of Jackson Parish well for nearly 18 years, the “retired” Jackson Parish Library Bookmobile will soon be on the road again. This time it will be those who live in Union County, Arkansas that will be the benefactor as this past week, Union County Library officials came to Jonesboro to pick up their newest edition.

“I can’t tell you how happy we are that our old bookmobile will be in use again,” said Jackson Parish Library Director Floyd Knox. “We hate to say goodbye, but we are honored to give another library the opportunity to love it as much as we do.”

Union County Library was awarded the Bookmobile following a special meeting of the JPL Board of Controls which agreed to the amount of $15,000.00 that was highest amount offered in the bid process.

Gibsland-Coleman gives Weston boys basketball early exit from playoffs

Jude Otwell set a new career high in points

If the LHSAA playoffs were drawn up like they used to be, Gibsland-Colemen would have been the #1 seed in Class C and prohibitive favorite to win the state tournament. As it is, seeded at #6 in the Division V “non-select” bracket, the Bulldogs are still a force to be reckoned with as evidenced by the 92-53 whipping put on Weston in the first round contest played this past Friday.

Don’t let their 14-9 record fool you. This is a very strong and dangerous team to play. Nine times this season, Gibsland-Coleman played teams from Class B & C. Nine times they came away victorious, including four wins against squads who won 20 games or more. Before district 1C play began, three games in which G-C won by an average of 37.6 points per game, the Bulldogs had only played four teams that had a losing record.

Posting their highest scoring total of the year, Gibsland-Coleman hit 11 shots from behind the three point line, including 7 in the first half that led to a commanding 46-27 lead at the break. It didn’t get any better in the second half as the Bulldogs equaled the point total to end Weston’s season with a 15-18 record and losers of 9 of their last 10 games.

One bright spot was the play of Jude Otwell, (shown in banner above) who with 13 points set a new career high for the third game in a row. tommy walkerAnother who came up big was Tommy Walker, (shown on right) who scored 12 points, the second best scoring game he posted this season. Bryce Zehr also pitched in with 13 points. Tait Henderson finished with four points followed by three points each from Lajavion Harris, Daniel Watlington and Nathan Wages. Tyler Pardue also made a basket for the Wolves who shot 37% from the field and 43% from the foul line.

Judging by the early returns on the season it could be said that the Quitman High School softball team looks even better than last year. While the jury is still out on that, there is no doubt that the field they play on at the QHS campus looks better.

That is because of the generous donation given by Jonesboro State Bank – Pledge 10 which paid for padding and lettering that covers the base of the backstop and along the sidelines up to the dugouts along the first and third base line.

Standing about two feet high, the royal blue padding provides motivational wording such as “Play Hard, “Play Smart” and “Play Together along the first base line and “One Team”, “One Dream” and “Lady Wolverines” on the fence down the third base line. Also shown is the letter “Q” on the backstop behind home plate.

Average Year For Trophy Bucks

As an outdoor writer/broadcaster, there are several things on my work schedule. For
instance, every week I write an outdoor column appearing in seven newspapers around north Louisiana. In addition, I produce and record four weekly radio programs. When opportunities are presented, I write an occasional article for magazines.

One thing that as been a regular assignment for the past 10 years or so is to contact,
interview and write articles for Louisiana Sportsman magazine and web site about trophy bucks taken in Louisiana. I enjoy everything I do for outdoors media but especially rewarding is getting to do articles on these big bucks that come to my attention either by my being contacted by successful hunters or by browsing social media to find photos hunters post when they are successful in downing a trophy.

Granted, I don’t get them all as some hunters prefer to keep their success under wraps as they have no interest in sharing details preferring to keep details and locations secret. I totally accept that. If I had a secret honey hole where I find my trophies, I might be reluctant to share too many details. Even so, I average getting to write articles on at least twenty-five big bucks each season. The ones I do write about give me an idea of what type of bucks on average are taken each season.

From my contacts for the season just ended, my conclusion is that the number and quality of bucks this year was average or maybe slightly below average. Drought conditions this past summer affecting browse plants no doubt contributed to this season’s somewhat lower results.

In past years, my articles have covered an occasional buck weighing in excess of 300
pounds and a few have resulted in impressive scores of 270 inches or better. I did articles on 30 trophy bucks this past season with buck with the heaviest body weighing just over 230 pounds. The highest scoring buck I located measured 190 inches of antler mass.

Looking over the statistics of bucks taken last season covered in articles I wrote were
impressive, but not quite as eye-catching as some in seasons past.

The highest number of bucks I found were taken in Union Parish with five while
Beauregard Parish produced four, indicating that you are likely to find a trophy really from one end of the state to the other. Bucks were taken in twenty-two parishes from north to central to the delta region to southwest Louisiana.

How about antler measurements? The thirty bucks in my articles averaged just over 156 inches of mass while the average number of antler points were 10.26. How about body weights? This came out to 192.6 pounds per buck.

During the month of October, nine bucks were reported, November had the highest
number with 15 while December produces six.

Four bucks were taken by traditional archery equipment, two with crossbows and the
majority, 24, fell to high powered rifles.

A number of trophies were taken by happenstance. They just showed up. Many of the
more successful hunters, however, work all year to prepare food plots, keep minerals available, especially during spring and summer when new antlers and muscle mass are growing.

I’m already looking forward to deer season 2024-25 when we get to do it all over again. Maybe this will be the season with weather conditions improved and I’ll get a call from you or find your photo of your buck on social media. Be assured, if this happens, I’ll be in touch.

Daily Devotional by Pam Ford Davis

Continuous Prayer

He mastered multitasking.

Jesus worshiped in the synagogue, preached the gospel, taught His disciples, healed the sick, cast out demons and raised the dead. No time was wasted. He was pressured by religious leaders; yet, He set aside time for prayer. Christ made communion with His Father a priority.

Why is it so difficult for His followers?

Jesus set the example; His prayers are documented.

“And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone (Matthew 14:23 ESV).”

“And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed (Mark 1:35 ESV).”

“But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray (Luke 5:16 ESV).”

Christ prayed for His followers.

“Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them (John 17:24-26 ESV).”

His prayers are continuous.

“Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us (Romans 8:34b ESV).”

Habitat for Humanity Dedicates Home Sites to be built in Jackson Parish

Local dignitaries and distinguished guests gathered at 244 Bond Street on Monday afternoon to dedicate the land that was donated by Mercy Medical CEO Kim Brunson to Habitat for Humanity for future home sites in Jackson Parish.

Highlighting the ceremony that featured Habitat for Humanity CEO Kathy Gardner and WestRock General Manager, as well as, Habitat for Humanity Board Member Eric Taylor giving speeches, was the traditional ribbon cutting that followed.

The audience also had the opportunity to hear from Jonesboro Mayor J. “Spike” Harris, Jackson Parish Police Jury President Todd Culpepper, and the one who made all the future plans possible through her benevolence, Mercy Medical CEO, Kim Brunson. Master of Ceremonies was James Bradford.

Four sites have been laid out on Bond Street where homeowners will be able to take advantage of buying a home for the cost of building materials and not having to pay interest on the mortgage.

This is made possible by the tremendously generous program sponsored by Habitat for Humanity and WestRock that allows those with low income enjoy the excitement of helping build their own home and then becoming homeowners.

Applications are now being accepted. Those interested are encouraged to go the website hfhnl.org or call 318-323-8003. Deadline for applying is March 31, 2024.

“This was a unique tragedy in that the fire is believed to have started above the living area of this home and stayed undetected for quite some time due to its location,” said Chief Adams, “Even then, a smoke alarm inside of the home can alert occupants to a fire emergency anywhere, even outside of the home, because smoke spreads quickly and far. What most people don’t realize is that it’s not the flames they should fear; it’s the smoke. Smoke alarms provide critically fast warnings to escape those deadly clouds of poisonous gases,”

If you need assistance obtaining smoke alarms for your home, Operation Save-A-Life can help.
