STATE CHAMPS! Quitman High School beats Stanley to win Division V title

The only way to erase a bad memory is to replace it with a new, better one.

History had not been kind for Quitman High School in prior state championship games. Four times prior, (2012, 2014, 2015, 2023) Quitman had reached the state finals. Four times they fell short but that is a distant memory now as with their 8-1 victory over Stanley High the Lady Wolverines have become the first school in Jackson Parish history to win a state title in prep softball.

Their waltz through the Division V “non-select” bracket validated the #1 ranking the Lady Wolverines held virtually all season and put the finishing touches on their sterling 29-4 season record. Stanley, who made the finals as a #6 seed end the year with a 6th seed in the Division  ends the year with a 22-14 mark.

Quitman reached the finals by beating #16 Monterey 16-0, #9 Calvin 9-1 and #5 Converse 6-0, gaining revenge for the extra inning loss in the 2023 state finals. Stanley earned an appearance in the title game by beating #11 Holden 11-3, #3 Choudrant 10-1 and #7 Anacoco 8-3.

The victory not only eased the pain of last season’s, nine inning, heart breaking defeat but also gave eighth grader, Hallie Kate Pullig, a new memory of her experience at the Frasch Sports Complex in Sulphur, host of the LHSAA state softball tournament.

Last year, it was Pullig who made the last out in the loss to Converse, something that she obviously had on her mind when she stepped up to the plate in the first inning with the bases loaded. Adding to pressure was that Stanley intentionally walking Cali Deal to get to her.

How did she respond? In championship fashion!

Pullig responded to the challenge by lacing a bases clearing double to stake Quitman to a 3-0 lead. She then added two more RBI’s with another double later in the contest, earning the budding superstar championship game MVP honors for her five RBI performance.

Maggie Guyotte also had a big day for the Lady Wolverines, going 3/3 that included a double, scoring twice and knocking in two more. Cali Deal also played an integral role in the victory. Not only did she draw three walks and score two runs, the junior lefty also allowed only two hits  and struck out 11 batters. The LSU commit ends the year with a 20-3 record, 218 K’s and diminutive 0.986 earned run average.

Northwestern State University signee, Madison Chaplin, also closed out her career in fine style getting three hits, including a double and  scoring twice. Anna Leach chipped in with two hits and run scored and Karley Huckaby added a double.

Semi-Finals

Quitman 6 Converse 0: Cali Deal and Maggie Guyotte blasted home runs and Madison Chaplin and Hallie Kate Pullig hit a triple each as Quitman broke out the “big bats” to beat the defending state champion. Anna Leach also had a big day with three hits in three at bats and senior Marley Bell also added to help the Lady Wolverines gain revenge of the nine inning loss in the 2023 state finals. Deal was also dominant “in the circle” spinning a two hit shutout and striking out 12.

Weston wins “Round Two for Crew” to advance to Division V quarterfinals

After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning Weston High exploded for 8 runs in their second at bat to pave the way to what turned out to be an easy 12-2 Division V regional round victory over 2023 semi-finalist Choudrant.

The second victory of the year over their former district foe improved the second seeded Wolves record to 20-13 on the year while #15 Choudrant closes out the season with a 13-17 mark.

While playing for a spot in the Division V quarterfinals, where they will now host #7 Lacassine at 5:30 pm on Tuesday, April 30th at the Jackson Parish Recreation Department Sports Complex was inspiration enough, the Wolves were also playing for Crew Tidwell.

With fans being asked to help support the battle that young Crew Tidwell is enduring in his fight for life at St. Jude’s hospital in Memphis by making tips, the Wolves pledged that money would be given for every strike out they got against the Aggies and for every run they scored. They did well on on both accounts, especially in the run scoring.

Three batters into the game it looked like things might not go as hoped for. Choudrant opened the contest by hitting a double and a one out home run to jump out to a 2-0 lead. As it turned out that would be all the damage the Aggies would do on the day against Cooper Delaney and Tait Henderson, who combined to no-hit Choudrant the rest of the way.

The lead lasted only until Weston came to bat in the bottom of the second frame as the Wolves sent 12 batters to the plate, getting six hits, including a three run home run by Henderson, coaxed a walk and took advantage of two Choudrant errors.

The offensive explosion started with Henderson drawing a walk followed by Jacob Gill hitting a single. Cole Tolar’s single plated the first run and Bryce Zehr’s hit tied the score at two each. Drew Browning’s single gave Weston the lead at 3-2 and setting up back to back errors on balls hit by Braden Theriot and Colton Blundell that upped the lead to 5-2. Henderson then hit his bomb over the centerfield fence to give Weston the commanding 8-2 advantage.

The Wolves would add two more in the fourth when Gill reached on an error and JTy Henderson, Tolar, Zehr and Browning all hit singles. The Wolves then walked off the Aggies due to the “ten run” rule with two more in the bottom of the fifth. Blundell, Delaney and T. Henderson all drew walks and Tolar lined a single for his third and fourth RBI of the day to score the final two runs.

Chamber of Commerce Promotes “Love the Boot” Awareness Week

The Jackson Parish Chamber of Commerce geared up for an exciting event to promote cleanliness and community involvement as part of Love the Boot Week. On April 26th, starting at 9 AM, residents were invited to join the Chamber of Commerce at their office located at 601 South Cooper for an Awareness Day.

The goal of the event was to encourage individuals to take pride in their surroundings by cleaning up around their homes and businesses. To support this initiative, the Chamber of Commerce distributed gloves and trash bags to participants.

In addition to promoting cleanliness, the Chamber of Commerce also offered incentives for early birds. The first 25 attendees received a free T-shirt emblazoned with the message “Keep Louisiana Beautiful.” This served as a reminder of the importance of maintaining the beauty of our state and parish.

By participating in Love the Boot Week, residents have the opportunity to make a positive impact on their community. Whether by volunteering for organized clean-up efforts or planning their own events, everyone can play a part in beautifying Jackson Parish.

The Chamber of Commerce is excited to rally the community together for this meaningful cause. Let’s join hands this April and work towards making Jackson Parish and Louisiana beautiful.

Quitman rallies late to down Doyline in Division V baseball regionals

Quitman High School scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to erase a 2-0 deficit then walked off a 4-3 victory over fellow district 1B member Doyline to advance to the LHSAA Division V quarterfinals in baseball.

The stirring come from behind victory improves the 5th seeded Wolverines season record to 17-10 while #12 Doyline ends the season with a 14-14 mark. Quitman now travels to face #4 Stanley for a quarterfinal contest slated to be played at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, May 1st.

One of the oldest adages in sports is that it is very hard to beat a team three times in one season and for 5 1/2 innings it looked like this was going to hold true. Doyline opened the contest played at Quitman by taking a quick 2-0 lead in their first at bat.

The early lead staked by the Panthers, who Quitman had already beaten in district 1B play by  7-1 and 3-1 scores at the beginning of the month, had Wolverine head coach Joe Lockhart concerned.

“I wasn’t happy that we were having to play Doyline again as we knew they had a good pitcher in Spears,” said Lockhart.

For the first five innings, Quitman put a runner get on base, with Kace West singling in the first, Pete Simonelli walking in the second,  Logan Ponder hitting a double in the third, Riley Duck singling in the fourth and Braden Hobbs hitting a single in the fifth inning but Spears managed to keep the Wolverines from scoring.

In the meantime, Quitman pitcher Ian Tilley kept the Wolverines close by keeping Doyline from scoring anymore allowing the Quitman offense to finally get untracked, which Lockhart expected his team to do.

“I had faith that we would eventually get going as we had worked all week on facing high velocity and our guys had responded well,” said Lockhart. “It took a little longer than I would have liked but we came through.”

Ponder got hit by a pitch to get the rally started, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored Quitman’s first run when Riley Duck hit a one-out single, his second hit of the day. John Raegan Hasley then hit a grounder to third that forced Duck at second. Pete Simonelli kept the inning alive with a single setting up the biggest hit in Jake Pott’s career.

Having only 27 at bats this season in 14 games played, Potts was called on to pinch hit with two hits. The junior responded with a clutch single to center field on the first pitch he saw that scored two and give Quitman a 3-2 lead.

“That was big to say the least,” said Lockhart. “Jake has done well for us all year when given the chance so I felt good about him being at the plate.”

It looked like Ponder, who relieved Tilley in the middle of the fourth inning, would pitch Quitman to victory but Doyline managed to tie the score when a grounder was booted with two outs that knotted the game at 3-3.  Undaunted, Quitman put the game away in their final at bat when Hudson Pullig singled then scored on a walk-off sacrifice fly by Kace West.

“I am really proud of the way we played,” said Lockhart. “We have been in tight games all year so facing adversity was nothing new for the guys and they responded as they have all season.”

Jonesboro Sr Village and Partners Launch “Adopt a Senior Citizen” Program

Effective April 29th , the Coalition for Safe Affordable Housing (COSAH) is launching an “Adopt a Senior Citizen” fundraiser in conjunction with a pledge of $30,000.00 plus in lease incentives for new tenants who move into Jonesboro Senior Village beginning in May.

According to Carl Gresham, Executive Director for COSAH, “we are big believers in the need for affordable housing in rural communities such as Jonesboro. Therefore, our board has decided to make this investment to encourage people on the fence to move to this state-of-the-art retirement community by offering them up to $100 per month in rental support for twelve months.”

The support will be paid directly to Jonesboro Senior Village on behalf of the tenant by COSAH.

“Jonesboro Senior Village is the one of the most advanced, affordable retirement
communities in rural Louisiana and it will make a significant contribution to the health and welfare of senior citizens and the overall quality of life in Jackson Parish for years to come,” said Gresham.

Local businesses, foundations, and individuals are being encouraged to also “Adopt a Senior Citizen” at Jonesboro Senior Village by making a nonprofit contribution to the Coalition for Safe Affordable Housing.

All contributions are tax deductible and can be dropped off at the Jonesboro Senior Village office or mailed to COSAH at 2916 Cypress Street, Suite 2, West Monroe LA, 71291. Please be sure to include a good mailing address so a receipt for tax purposes can be sent to the donor.

“In the coming weeks we will be meeting with local businesses and civic leaders to tout the benefits of the “Adopt a Senior Citizen” campaign as well as discussing other ways to improve the quality of life for area senior citizens,” said Gresham.

“We are extremely grateful for the generous rental assistance COSAH is providing to
new tenants of Jonesboro Senior Village,” said Jeff Glover of MGM Development
Group. “We love the idea of the Adopt a Senior Citizen Campaign given how hard hitting inflation has been on senior citizens on fixed incomes. We look forward to seeing the Jackson Parish Community rally in support of this initiative.”

Weston High baseball / softball teams partner with JPRD Legacy League

Under the direction of head coaches Joey Kemp and Cecilia Chambliss the Weston High School baseball and softball team has been a tremendous partner to the community through their benevolent outreach efforts. This past Monday, the Wolves / Lady Wolves continued that tradition by taking part in assisting the players of the Jackson Parish Recreation Department Legacy League.

Designed for players with physical, cognitive or developmental disabilities the Legacy League and league organizers are looking for volunteers who will be supportive, compassionate, understanding, encouraging, thoughtful and considerate. Volunteers should offer as much or as little help as the player needs or wants. Sometimes it will be just guidance or positive reinforcement needed while other times more physical help may be required.

Games are played each Monday beginning at 5:30 pm on Field 3 of the Jackson Parish Recreation Department Sport Complex, located at 5254 Hwy 4, east of Jonesboro.

Homin’ In On A Grand Slam

In just about every sport, there are participants who set personal goals. For example, a baseball player aspires to hit .400; basketball players hope for a triple-double. For golfers, it’s a hole-in-one.

It is no different in the world of the hunter/angler. Bass fishermen look for a lunker
weighing in double-digits while deer hunters long for a buck with a rack impressive enough to “make the book”. For turkey hunters, there’s the Grand Slam.

Although I would love to have a 10 pound bass on my wall and my name in the Boone and Crockett records for trophy bucks, this is not what makes my motor run. What lights my fire is to hear the thunderous gobble of a long-beard wild turkey gobbler on a spring morning.

The thoughts of my completing a Grand Slam in turkey hunting was about as remote as me making a hole-in-one. That was before I had the chance to hunt turkeys in South Dakota.

To pull off a wild turkey Grand Slam, it is necessary to take one of each of the four sub-species of wild turkeys found in the U.S. These include Easterns, which inhabit much of the south, east and northeast; Rio Grande turkeys, residents of arid mesquite and cactus country of the southwest; Osceolas which are residents only of the southern half of Florida, and Merriams of the mountains and plains of the mid-west.

To accomplish such a task, it would be necessary for a lot of things to fall into place, and there would be an abundance of traveling involved. Frankly, I just didn’t see that happening.

One spring afternoon as the sun slipped behind a hill in the Badlands of South Dakota, I completed my Grand Slam. First, a little history of what brought me to this point I never thought I’d reach.

My first turkey hunt was a half-hearted effort when a writer friend invited me to his home state of Alabama to hunt. On April 13, 1992, my guide, Skinny Hallmark, called in a gobbling longbeard off a hillside to my gun and in that moment, something happened that would forever change the way I look at spring mornings. It was love at first GOBBLE…..BOOM, and I’ve chased these wary birds every spring since.

The Alabama gobbler was an Eastern sub-species and I gradually learned what turkey hunting was all about.

In 2000, I jumped at the opportunity to hunt another of the sub-species, the Rio Grande. While hunting with Al Brasuel and sons in south Texas I downed my first Rio Grande. The thought of a Grand Slam only teased the margins of my mind; I saw no way that I’d ever travel to south Florida or to the Great Plains to turkey hunt. That was before Keith Brasuell called me one day inviting me to ride with him to Naples, Florida for an Osceola hunt. Good fortune accompanied me when a mature Osceola gobbler strutted in front of my shotgun.

Like a bolt from the blue, it hit me. All of a sudden, I found myself only one bird away from a coveted Grand Slam. Could I do it? Could I figure out a way to head somewhere up north where Merriams live?

Soon after returning from Florida, I found a press release from the South Dakota
Department of Game, Fish and Parks making a pitch for their great hunting and fishing opportunities. The release talked about the great trout fishing; super walleye angling; wonderful deer and elk hunting….and here is what caught my eye….an abundance of Merriams gobblers. On a hunch, I called the South Dakota agency, got the go ahead and flew into Rapid City.

In addition to securing a Black Hills gobbler tag, I was one of the fortunate few who also snagged a Prairie tag. This would double my chances for a Merriams, and if things worked out right, I might even get two gobblers which, incidentally I did.

On the last minute of the last hour of the last day of my Prairie hunt, I bagged a big 21 pound Merriams.

There’s no 10 pound bass hanging on my wall nor is my name in the Boone and Crockett book but, by George, there’s a wild turkey Grand Slam hanging on my wall and I couldn’t be more proud..

“Gobbler fans representing the Grand Slam hang on the wall in this writers office.”

Daily Devotional by Pam Ford Davis

The Defense Rests

Audiences have followed courtroom drama for decades. The Perry Mason character drew radio listeners long before he made his way to black & white TV. Mysteries need to be unraveled; witnesses questioned and cases resolved. The guilty are tried and sentenced. Relieved, the innocent are cleared by the jury’s verdict.

“We find the defendant not guilty.”

Visualize God’s courtroom …

State your case.

“Hear now what the Lord is saying,
‘Arise, plead your case before the mountains,
And let the hills [as witnesses] hear your voice.

‘Hear, O mountains, the indictment of the Lord,
And you enduring foundations of the earth,
For the Lord has a case (a legal complaint) against His people,
And He will dispute (challenge) Israel.

‘O My people, what have I done to you [since you have turned away from Me]?
And how have I wearied you? Answer Me (Micah 6:1-3 AMP)

My case wouldn’t stand up in court.

‘Your honor, the defense rests.’

Praise God; Jesus intercedes for me.

“My little children (believers, dear ones), I am writing you these things so that you will not sin and violate God’s law. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate [who will intercede for us] with the Father: Jesus Christ the righteous [the upright, the just One, who conforms to the Father’s will in every way—purpose, thought, and action] (1 John 2:1 AMP).”

Death Notices

Kenneth Ray Blackstock
August 28, 1944 – April 26, 2024

blackstockKenneth Ray Blackstock, a man of unwavering dedication and boundless spirit, peacefully departed this life on Friday, April 26, 2024, at the age of 79, leaving behind an abundance of cherished memories and an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him. He was born in Jonesboro, Louisiana, on August 28, 1944.

Ray’s professional journey spanned over forty years at Stone Container in Hodge, Louisiana, where he carved out a legacy of excellence through his tireless commitment and unwavering work ethic as a machinist. Beyond the confines of the workplace, Ray found his true passion in the art of restoring classic automobiles within the sanctuary of his beloved workshop. His love for the open road found expression in relaxing camping adventures alongside his devoted wife, Linda.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Verta D. (Calhoun) Blackstock, his father, John Floyd Blackstock, and his great-grandson, Corey Carter.

His spirit lives on through the loving embrace of his wife of 37 years, Linda (Rasberry) Blackstock, and their cherished children; Jeff Blackstock & Pam, Greg Blackstock, Scotty Blackstock & Gena, Pat Posey & Cristy, and Dana Ingram & Jeff; sister, Nelda Bennett & Benson. Theirs is a legacy of love that knows no bounds.

Ray’s presence illuminated the lives of his adoring grandchildren: Samantha Rich & Jake, Shelby Chandler & Connor, Tyler Posey, Ashton Walker & Austin, Lizzie Ingram, Abby Ingram, Gracie Ingram, Trevor Blackstock, and Cameron Blackstock, each a testament to his enduring love and unwavering guidance. His memory also lives on through the laughter shared with his seven great-grandchildren, a testament to the joy he brought to all who knew him.

As the sun sets on Ray’s earthly journey, we gather to celebrate a life well-lived and a soul deeply loved. The Southern-Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel will open its doors on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM, welcoming friends and loved ones to pay their respects. The memorial service, an ode to Ray’s enduring legacy, will commence at 11:00 AM, guided by the gentle words of Bro. Randy Dark.

In honoring Ray’s memory, we shall lay him to rest at a later date in the Garden of Memories (Jonesboro).

Tyler Posey, Trevor Blackstock, Cameron Blackstock, Connor Chandler, Jake Rich, and Austin Walker stand as honorary pallbearers, a solemn tribute to a life well-lived.

Expressions of sympathy and condolences may be conveyed to the family via http://www.edmondsfuneralhome.com, a digital sanctuary where memories may be shared and Ray’s legacy celebrated for generations to come.

James Maurice Peel
April 15, 1943 – April 22, 2024

peelJames Maurice Peel “Maurice”, of El Dorado, was born April 15, 1943, in Jonesboro, LA, to the late Vivian Thornton Peel and James Murray Peel. His sister, Myrna DeCou, preceded him in death. He died April 22, 2024, at Oak Ridge Health and Rehab.

His son, David Maurice Peel, and his wife of nearly 59 years, Patricia Elmore Peel, will hold dear the memory of him. Other relatives include granddaughter, Hillary Bradford, nephew, Mitch DeCou (Kim), niece, Lesley Simpson (Al), niece, Lauren Phillips (Shane), nieces, Celeste Hernandez (Dennis) and Hannah Carter, nephew, Aaron Hunter and brother-in-law, Larry Elmore.

Maurice’s goal in retirement was to read all the books he ever wanted to read, but what he did instead was to continue his education. His life-long interest in learning led him to earn a master’s in business from Memphis State University, and after retirement an undergraduate degree in environmental science and a master’s in biological science from Louisiana Tech. He briefly taught biology at South Arkansas Community College.

He graduated from Jonesboro High School, Jonesboro, LA and from Louisiana Tech University with a Bachelor of Science in Zoology. While at Louisiana Tech he met his future wife, Patricia Elmore.

He loved watching trees grow so he built a greenhouse and sold trees online. He built a workshop for his 1949 Ford truck and later his 1971 Mustang.

Maurice retired as the Manager of Marketing Operations from Murphy Oil. His office workers volunteered that he was a good boss.

He became the first director of St. Paul Methodist Church’s food pantry. The church gained an active member when he joined it, as he headed several committees over the years.

He knew how to organize, follow goals, delegate, and complete his pursuits at his job and in hs volunteer work. He was the man you wanted on a committee or to head it.

His love for his wife and son knew no bounds, and although he was a man of few words, his actions were loud. He always completed what he promised he would do.

Thank you to the caring nurses and aides of Oak Ridge Nursing, Gentiva Hospice and Baptist Health Hospital in Monticello, AR.

Visitation was held at St. Paul Global Methodist Church in El Dorado on Friday, April 26, 2024. The funeral service followed with Rev. Randy Rowlan officiating under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors. Interment took place in Jonesboro, LA, in the Gayla Traina Memorial Cemetery.

Alzheimer’s started taking away his memories and activities several years ago. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association, St. Paul Global Methodist Church, or any of the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) charities.

Condolences can be expressed online at http://www.youngsfuneralhome.com for the Peel family.

Waddy Turner Meek
August 2, 1937 – April 23, 2024

meekOn Tuesday, April 23, 2024, Jonesboro, Louisiana bid farewell to Waddy Meek, a man whose life was defined by hard work, love, and an appreciation for the simple joys of existence. Born in Campti, Louisiana on August 2, 1937, Waddy’s journey was one of quiet strength and steadfast dedication.

For over thirty years, Waddy was a pillar in the gas industry, his expertise and skill earning him the respect of colleagues and the admiration of all who knew him. But, beyond the welder’s mask and the sparks, he was a man who found solace in the tranquility of nature.

Whether he was tending to his garden, casting a line into the waters, or simply enjoying the peacefulness of the outdoors, Waddy found contentment in life’s small moments. His love for deer hunting and camping spoke to his appreciation for the beauty of the natural world.

He is survived by his daughter, Linda DeLuee and her husband, Robert; his son, Paul Meek and his wife, Brenda; 4 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; brother, Donald Lee Meek; sister, Cathaline Burns and her husband, Kenneth; as well as dear friends, Steve and DeAnna Stringer.

Visitation was held on Friday, April 26, 2024, at Southern-Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel in Jonesboro with the funeral service following led by the comforting words of Bro. Michael McNatt. Waddy’s final resting place will be in Cypress Creek Cemetery near Dodson, Louisiana.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Waddy’s name can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Wounded Warrior Project, two causes that were close to his heart. Your contributions will honor his memory and continue his legacy of compassion and support for those in need.

Weston and Quitman knows Regional Baseball Playoff opponents well

There won’t be any secrets to be learned by district 1B champion, Weston High and 1B runner-up, Quitman, about their LHSAA Division V second round playoff opponents. They know them about as good as one team can know another.

This Thursday, April 25th, both Jackson Parish schools will be in action at home as they attempt to move forward in 24 team bracket of “non-select” schools after receiving first round byes.

Second seed Weston will play host to traditional power and former district foe, Choudrant, at the Jackson Parish Sports Complex in a matchup of two of the semifinalists from last year. Meanwhile, #5 seed Quitman will welcome fellow district 1B member Doyline to the QHS field with the winner moving on to the quarterfinals. Both contests are slated to begin at 6:00 pm.

Weston and Quitman both own victories over their opponents this season with the Wolves beating Choudrant 9-2 on March 20th and Quitman beating Doyline twice 7-1, 3-1 in district 1B play earlier in April.
