
The 2024 -25 LHSAA basketball season has begun for the “small schools” across the state, including at Quitman and Weston High Schools. Both opened their boys and girls campaigns with games earlier this week and both will compete in area tournament action this Thursday thru Saturday.
The girls and boys teams from Quitman will take part in the Choudrant Tournament while Weston will take both of their squads to compete in the Dodson Tournament. No game times or opponents were provided.
Quitman 74 Dodson 17 (boys): The Wolverines opened the 2024-25 season in fine style as Quitman shot 67% from the field and 45% from the three point line to crush Dodson. It was the Brayden’s, as in Martin and Smith that did the most damage with Brayden Martin scoring 24 points and Brayden Smith adding 10. Shane Reed and Case Sims chipped in with 6 points apiece, Amaurion Thompson finished with five and Grant Williams had four. Taden Thomas and Asher Shultz had three and two points respectively while the Leach boys (Abel & Noah) hit a free throw each.
Quitman 57 Dodson 20 (girls): Cali Deal scored 17 points and Taylor Borland added 12 as the Lady Wolverines coasted to the season opening win. Anna Leach scored seven, Allie Robertson added six and Emma Walker chipped in with four points. Annie Mobley and Jaleigh Burns scored three each and Braelyn Patton tallied two points to round out the scoring.
Weston 40 Summerfield 38 (boys) Three free throws by Daniel Williams, who led Weston in scoring with 12 points, put the Wolves up 40-31 late in the fourth quarter before turning back a furious rally for the season opening win. Nathin Wages added 10, Lajavion Harris netted nine and Bryce Zehr added eight in the balanced scoring attack. Dawson Clifton chipped in with two points.
Summerfield 62 Weston 54 (girls): Carly Jo Griffin and Briley Peterson scored 15 points each and Anslee Aldy added 10 but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Wolves dropped their season opener. Nadia Siadek chipped in with eight points and six rebounds, while Carlynn Water scored six. Raelynn Shell pulled down 9 rebounds for Weston as well.
