After leading the Winnfield High School football team as their head coach for the past five years, Jonesboro native Jay Watson has decided to step down. The 1990 JHHS graduate and member of the Tigers state championships team in 1987-89 leaves WHS with a 23-26 overall record, that includes a 2-3 mark in three years of postseason play.
After graduating from Northwestern State University in 1996, Watson embarked on a 27 year coaching career starting as an assistant at Winnfield High from 1997-2005. From there he came back to his alma mater, to be an assistant at JHHS from 2006 -09 before moving to West Ouachita High School from 2010 – 16. For two years prior to going Winnfield High School he was the head coach at Ruston Junior High from 2017-18.
“Winnfield has been like a second home to me during my coaching career and I appreciate all the support I received during my time there,” said Watson. “I wish them all the best of luck in the future.”
