Quitman smashes Florien to advance to LHSAA Softball Class B Quarterfinals

Top-ranked Quitman opened the defense of their 2024 Softball State Championship in fine style by pummelling #16 seed Florien 12-2 in five innings at the Lady Wolverines field in the second round of the Class B playoffs.

Quitman will now host #9 Holden on April 26th for a quarterfinal round matchup, with the winner earning a trip to the state softball tournament that will be played at the North Frasch Softball Complex in Sulphur, LA, May 2-3.

The Lady Wolverines spotted Florien an early 1-0 and 2-1 lead in the first two innings but took control by scoring four runs in the third, five in the fourth, and two more in the fifth, which ended the contest via the “ten run” rule.

After spotting the Lady Black Cats one run in the top of the first, Maggie Guyotte quickly evened the score with one swing of he bat by blasting her 7th home run of the season over the center field fence.

Quitman took control of the contest in the bottom of the third inning when Guyotte opened the frame with a single and moved to second base when Cali Deal drew a walk. Hallie Kate Pullig then followed with a double to center field that scored two before scoring herself in front of Zoee Williams whose smash to left field left the yard.

The lead increased to 10-2 in Quitman’s next at bat thanks to four QHS base hits, a pair of doubles, and an error made. Anna Leach got the five-run frame started by slapping a single, setting up Guyotte reaching on an error, and Deal stroking a double.  Pullig and Kinsley Ponder followed with base hits,  Karley Huckaby hit a double, and Briley Bowers reached on a single. Doubles by Deal and Williams sandwiched around a single by Pullig, ended the contest.
