Quitman to face Grace Christian in LHSAA Class B Softball Semi-finals

There is no place like home! The Lady Wolverines from Quitman High School proved that adage to be true over the first three rounds of the LHSAA Class B softball playoffs.

First, it was the chance to sit at home during the first round of the postseason by virtue of a bye received for being the top-ranked team in the classification. Next came two games played on their home field on the campus of Quitman High School where they easily dispatched #16 Florien by a 12-2 score and before coming back three days later to hammer Holden 17-5 in the quarterfinal round.

Now the Lady Wolverines will head to their “home away from home,” otherwise known as the North Frasch Softball Complex in Sulphur, LA where they will play Grace Christian in the semi-final round of 2025 State Softball Tourney.

Home away from home? If you refer to “home” being the place where you are comfortable and know the surroundings, then YOU BET YA! The North Frash Softball Complex is certainly a place that Quitman knows their way around, as the Lady Wolverines will be playing their fifth game in three years at the site of the state tourney.  Their three wins in four games played over the past two years while playing for a state title in both also attest to the comforts of “home”.

Standing in the way of a third straight title game and possible back-to-back state championships is #4-ranked Grace Christian (20-9), which also boasts a high-powered offense attested by their 15-0 romp over Fairview in the second round and an 11-17 victory over Hicks in the quarterfinals.

The May 2nd contest that will be played at 2:00 pm on Field 17 will be the first between the two schools this year and only the 9th of the year against a Class B school with the Lady Wolverines having won all eight prior against teams from their same classification. This includes victories already this year against both Zwolle and Stanley, who represent the two teams in the other side of the bracket vying for a state title game berth.

Bring it on! One thing is for sure. While respecting their opponent, Quitman will not be awed by Grace Christain in any way shape or form. And why should they be? The Lady Wolverines have played what is arguably the toughest schedule in the LHSAA this spring, going against virtually every #1 or #2 seed from all classifications and compiling a 19-10 record.

Team leaders! Not only does Quitman have incredible talent, Justin Dodson’s squad also has tremendous depth as nine batters have a .250 or better average led by the .420 mark from Zoee Williams. Want power? Then look no further than the 9 home runs hit by La Tech singee; Maggie Guyotte, who is nearing 60 “bombs” for her career that still has a season to go next year. Eight players, led by Williams with 33, have driven in 20 or more runs.

What about pitching? Are you kidding? That is the Lady Wolverines’ strong suit. LSU signee Cali Deal, the reigning Class B MVP, leads the way with a 9-4 record and a 1.437 ERA, with a pair of young guns in Guyotte and freshman Brenna Lamkin both turning in remarkable performances this season, leading to the QHS earned run average being only 3.097 runs per game.

Dynasty? Already their are whispers by people who make the claim that the Lady Wolverines qualify for such rare air. While it still may be a little early to start making such a claim, a sweep of their two games still possibly ahead that would propel QHS to back-to-back state titles would give the right to say it loud and clear.
