Weston native Scott Carter has earned many accolades over his career as a first a baseball player and then later as a coach. Recently, the 2025 Jackson Parish Sports Hall of Famer gained yet another distinction when he was inducted into the Greater Houston Area Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Honor.
When it comes to having success in his selected field, few can compare to the lofty standards set by the 1980 Weston High School graduate. After helping WHS win a state baseball title in 1977 and a runner-up finish his senior year, the All-District and All-State catcher decided to go into coaching the sport he loved.
In 2024, Carter “hung up his spikes” after 37 years of coaching on the diamond, 34 of those as a head coach at three different high schools in Louisiana and Texas, where he became one of the very few to win state championships in both.
His modicum of success is mind-boggling, beginning with winning an incredible 643 games, which tabulates to nearly 19 wins a season (18.911 to be exact) for nearly three and a half decades. Twenty-seven (27) times Carter led his team to the playoffs, 16 times as a district champion. Four times his squads made the state tournament, and three times he won it all, first in 1992 and 1993 at Sacred Heart High School in Ville Platte, LA, and again in 2017, when he guided Port Neches-Grove High School to a state championship in Texas.
In 27 of his 34 years as head man, Carter ended the season being named as the district Coach of the Year. Three times, he was voted the state Coach of the Year. A total of 53 players he coached moved on to play college baseball. Eleven more were drafted by Major League Baseball teams.
Married to Bridget (Harty) Carter, of Winnfield, La., the pair has two daughters, Chelsea Milian and Candyce Carter, the latter who is a two-time state championship-winning coach in softball as well, also winning titles in Louisiana and Texas.
