During the investigation, it was determined that Pierce was using a social media account under another individual’s name and had been communicating through that account. He also admitted to using a social networking application he was prohibited from possessing.

Pierce was taken into custody and transported to the Jackson Parish Jail, where he remains in custody. He was booked on the following charges:

● LA R.S. 15:542 – Failure to Register
● LA R.S. 14:91.5 – Unlawful Use of a Social Networking Site
● LA R.S. 14:91.9 – Unlawful Presence or Contact of a Sex Offender Relative to a Former Victim

No further details are available at this time. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. We do not discuss case specifics in the comments.

Superintendent Billy Carter Presents the JPSD “Mission Memo” for April

JPSD Superintendent William “Billy” Carter

When William “Billy” Carter began his tenure as the Jackson Parish School District (JPSD) Superintendent in July 2025, one thing he said was important to him was providing residents with monthly updates on JPSD’s progress, goals, and plans, as well as those of each representative school. See the “Mission Memo” for April below.

Prep Track: Ciara Gray sets new all-time Jackson Parish record

With a leap of 40′ 11.50″, Ciara Gray from JHHS set a new all-time Jackson Parish record in the triple jump

There are certain marks in track and field that grab attention when achieved because they are rarely reached. In the girls’ competition, one is going over the 40-foot barrier in the triple jump.

That had been accomplished only one time before in the Jackson Parish girls prep track and field history, and that was by JHHS senior Ciara Gray in the 2025 Class A regionals. That is, until this past Wednesday, April 1st. No foolin’!

Gray hopped, skipped, and leaped her way to the top of the LHSAA prep rankings in the triple jump and rewrote the Jonesboro-Hodge and Jackson Parish all-time record books when she soared 40′ 11.5″ at the prestigious Gator Relays held at Lee Hedges Stadium on the campus of Captain Shreve High School in Shreveport.

The two-time defending state champion in the event and holder of 8 of the best 10 all-time triple jumps in JHHS and Jackson Parish history, obliterated her previous record of 40′ 1.25″. In doing so, Gray also rose to the top of the state in the event, regardless of classification.

As if that wasn’t enough, Gray also took first place in the long jump with a mark of 18′ 2.5″, which also registers in the all-time JHHS and Jackson Parish girls’ prep track annals as 6th best in history.

The two outstanding performances in the field portion of the meet, which saw 25 of the top high school track and field teams from northwest Louisiana and south Arkansas take part, earned Gray a national Elite Performance “silver status” designation by Mile Split.

For the first time this season, Gray didn’t win all four of the events she specializes in, but wasn’t far from it. In the 100 and 300-meter hurdles, Gray came in second place to the state’s top hurdler, Leach Bryant of Class 5A Captain Shreve.

The 4×200 relay team of Derryn Osborne, JaKhorielle Lard, Carmen Livingston and Sanaa Tatum also were “podium placers” after posting a time of 1:50.87, good for third place.

In boys competition Lon’Trevious Burns and Landon Boston had the best finishes for the Tigers with Burns leaping 6’0″ in the high jump and Boston posting a 38’8″ effort in the triple jump, both good for 4th place in their respective event.

UPCOMING MEETS!

Quitman High School will take their longest regular season road trip of the year on Tuesday, April 7th when they make the trek to Lake Charles, LA to participate in the McNeese High School Relays.

Sheriff Brent Barnett to host “Meet and Greet” on Thursday, April 9th

(Paid Content)

Come “Meet and Greet” Jackson Parish Sheriff Brent Barnett at the Charles H. Garrett Community Center, located at 182 Industrial Drive in Jonesboro, from 5:30 – 8:30 pm on Thursday, April 9th. Bring the kids for activities, enjoy refreshments, and speak with Brent one-on-one so he can hear your ideas and concerns about what matters most to the community and parish.

“As your Sheriff, I am a part of this community, and I believe the Sheriff’s Office is strongest when it works alongside the people of this parish and all those who serve it in different ways every day. Public safety and community well-being are shared responsibilities. Citizens who stay engaged, report concerns, support one another, and work alongside law enforcement and others who serve this parish play an important role in keeping Jackson Parish safe and strong. I am committed to making sure citizens have access to clear and accurate information about how this office operates. Listening to concerns and maintaining open lines of communication strengthens both accountability and trust. I also believe in opening avenues for community involvement. Trust is built through consistent action. Fair enforcement of the law, professional conduct, reliable service, and strong community partnerships must be the standard every day. We will uphold the law with confidence and integrity, and when mistakes are made, I will take ownership and do what I can to make them right. As we move forward, my focus is on strengthening what is already in place while continuing to improve how we serve this parish. That means evaluating operations, improving communication, and building stronger connections across Jackson Parish. My goal is not only to respond when needed, but to ensure this office remains connected to the people it serves and continues to support the safety, stability, and quality of life in our parish. The people of this parish are what make Jackson Parish great, and I will never lose sight of how important that partnership is to the future of this office and this community.” – Jackson Parish Sheriff Brent Barnett

Prep Baseball: Weston continues late-season surge, JHHS & Quitman fall

All three Jackson Parish high school baseball teams were in action this past Thursday and Friday with three of the top ten teams in the Class B power ratings taking center stage.

Weston, ranked #5 in the latest Class B polls beat Division III Union Parish 16-0 to improve to 17-10 on the year, while Jonesboro-Hodge, ranked #11 in Division IV among “non select” schools with a 14-5 record, fell to Grace Christian, #3 in Class B with a 25-2 mark by a 16-1 score and Quitman, ranked #10 in Class B with a 16-11 record, dropped a 5-1 decision to  Division II Grant High School.

Weston 16 Union Parish 0: The Wolves began April the way they ended March, with a shutout of their opponent, the first time all season that Weston has grabbed back-to-back shutouts. Liam Weaver and Bryce Tolar combined on the three-inning blanking, with the pair striking out 7 Farmers and allowing only a pair of hits in the “mercy rule” victory.

It was a big day for the “Border brothers” as both Jase and Easton continued their impressive breakout seasons by collecting two extra-base hits in the same game for the first time in their brief careers. Easton smashed a double and a home run, scored twice, and drove in a new career high 4 runs, while Jase stroked a double and a triple, scored three times, and knocked in three more. Drew Browning also “circled the bases” for the team for the best 4th time this season while scoring three times and collecting 3 RBI. Weaver helped his winning cause at the plate as well with a single, double, 2 runs scored, and 3 RBI, and Remy Kennard added a “two-bagger”, scored, and knocked in a pair of runs. Dawson Griffin and Tolar both scored a run and had an RBI each, while Ty Henderson scored twice and Beaux Oliver scored a run.

Grace Christian 16 JHHS 1: The third-ranked team in Class B, which has the second most wins of any program regardless of classification, proved to be too strong for the Tigers, who saw their four-game winning streak broken. No individual state were available.

Grant 5 Quitman 1: Remy Upshaw hit a single in the bottom of the fourth inning to knock in pinch runner Jayden Harts, who had taken over for Asher Rhodes after his one out single and move Conner Moak to third following his walk to narrow the deficit to 2-1 but that was as close as the Wolverines would come. Grant pitching didn’t allow another hit the rest of the way s and the Cougars added twp runs in the top of the sixth and another in the final frame to take the victory.

Prep Softball: All three Jackson Parish teams victorious

Quitman Quadrifics!
Hallie Kate Pullig, Zoee Williams, Kinsley Ponder and Brenna Lamkin all hit home runs in the Lady Wolverines 15-0 victory over Division IV Lakeside

All three Jackson Parish high school softball teams began the month of April on the “good foot” as Quitman won for the second straight game and both JHHS and Weston broke long losing streaks.

Quitman 15 Lakeside 0: The battle between Quitman, ranked #2 in Class B, and Lakeside, #5 in Division IV among “non-select” schools, was no contest as the Lady Wolverines played “long ball” to earn the “mercy rule” victory. With the victory, Quitman improved to 15-9 on the season while Lakeside dropped to 15-9 overall. Hallie Kate Pullig was one of four Lady Wolverines to “go deep” while also adding a triple, scoring twice, and knocking in a game-best 5 RBI. Kinsley Ponder and Zoee Williams also “circled the bases”, scored a run, and knocked in three each, and Brenna Lamkin “went yard” to score a run and drive in two more. Maggie Guyotte also had a big day with three hits, including a double, scoring three times, and knocking in a pair, while Briley Bowers also hit a “two-bagger” and scored. Anna Claire Leach scored three times, and Avery Watson, London Burks, and Amelia Staggs all scored. Lamkin struck out five and fired a one hitter for the victory.

Jonesboro-Hodge 24 Wossman11: Seven runs in the first inning and four more in the second paced Jonesboro-Hodge to the victory over the Division II foe from Monroe. The win broke a five game losing streak and improved the Lady Tigers season record to 4-13. More importantly it was a critical victory as the Lady Tigers, currently ranked #34 in Division IV are basically in a must win situation in their remaining five games in order to qualify for the postseason as only the top 26 teams will make the playoffs. No individual stats were available.

Weston 23 Simsboro 2: Rachel Bandy and Carly Jo Griffin set a new single game offensive bests to pace Weston to a new season best in hits and runs scored. With the victory the Lady Wolves improved to 3-1 in District 1B play while breaking a three game losing streak and improving to 7-15 overall. The win also helped Weston’s attempt to qualify for the postseason in Class B, as the Lady Wolves are currently ranked #23 and less than a power rating point from being among the 20 teams that qualify for the playoffs with two games left to play, both against schools from higher classifications. For the first time in her brief career, Bandy, who was also the winning pitcher, hit two home runs in the same game and Carly Jo Griffin had three extra base hits in one game with a pair of doubles and a triple and both had 4 RBI in the contest. Kate Keiffer also set a new career milestone by scoring four times and knocking in four run, bouyed by a home run in the top of the fourth that helped lead to 10 runs that closed out the game via the “mercy rule.” Teegan Hall smacked a triple, scored three times and had an RBI, while Carlynn Waters (2 RS, RBI), Davynee Bearden ( 2 RS, 2 RBI), Molly Beaubouef 2 RS, 2RBI), and Tessa Reeves (2 RS, 2 RBI) each hit a double as Weston blasted a season best 11 extra base hits.

Kolby Patrick from JHHS Recognized as “Staff Standout”

In an effort to honor the outstanding educators who toil tirelessly to give students in the Jackson Parish school system the best education possible, the Jackson Parish School District (JPSD) is pleased to continue the weekly educator recognition program, “Who We Are Wednesday.”

Each Wednesday, one of the JPSD faculty members is recognized for their tremendous commitment, dedication, and excellence in the classroom, which helps our local youth prepare for their future endeavors. This week, Kolby Patrick, a dedicated English II and English IV Teacher at Jonesboro-Hodge High School, is honored as “Staff Standout.”

With 6 years in education, all spent serving Jackson Parish Schools, Kolby says the most rewarding part of teaching is witnessing those unforgettable “lightbulb moments”—when students finally grasp a concept they’ve been struggling with. Those moments of clarity and confidence are what make the work meaningful and remind him why he chose this profession.

One of Kolby’s proudest accomplishments came early in his career when he was honored as the Jackson Parish High School Teacher of the Year during his third year of teaching—an achievement that reflects his dedication and impact in the classroom.

He credits his high school English teacher, Linda Traweek, as a major influence in his life and teaching journey. If he weren’t in education, Kolby says he would still want to be in a role where he could make the most positive difference. Outside of school, he enjoys playing trivia with friends and spending time with his niece and nephews.

Join us in celebrating Kolby Patrick as the Jackson Parish School District’s “Staff Standout.”

Glynn Harris Outdoor and Fishing Report

(Turkey season is open, and although I can no longer hunt, allow me to dip into the archives and share a column I wrote several years ago to express my love for the sport and all that accompanies it.)

TREASURES FOUND WHEN TURKEY HUNTING

By: Glynn Harris

We’re sitting here on the cusp of one of my favorite times of year. Its spring; dogwoods and azaleas are blooming, everything is turning green, except for the yellow dust that falls like a heavy mist from my pine trees. I’ve already had to break out the lawn mower so, yes, it is spring.

As much as I enjoy watching the metamorphosis of the drab shades of winter evolve into a kaleidoscope of color, there is another experience that supersedes being there for the birth of yet another spring. Wild turkey season opens in Louisiana and the prospect of hearing a longbeard gobbler sound off from the roost and watching him in full strut, slowly shuffle his way to my gun makes other springtime happenings pale in comparison.

Before having the experience of an encounter with a gobbler, you have to know where he hangs out once he leaves his roost tree and the only way to do that is to scout. This involves looking for tracks, droppings, feathers and strut marks in addition to hearing the actual gobble of your quarry.

Time has to be spent in the woods along old woods roads, log decks, pipeline and power line rights of way looking for the tell tale sign where turkeys are hanging out.

While looking for evidence of turkeys in an area, on more than one occasion, I have found other treasures as a bonus.

A few springs ago, I was walking an old woods road with wild flowers pushing through the new green grass when I spotted something that seemed out of place. Upon closer examination, the tip of white protruding from the greenery was the tine of an antler that had been cast aside as always happens once buck deer drop the old to begin growing the new. For the moment, I forgot turkey tracks, retrieved the prize that now rests in my office.

On another occasion, I was walking through a food plot near a deer stand when I spotted an antler among the clover. Another trophy got a ride home in my truck.

As exciting as it is to find shed antlers, there are other treasures that are more mind-boggling. One day I was walking a recently plowed pipeline that exposed bare iron ore laden ground in search of turkey sign when a small rock at my feet looked different. It was an arrow head.

Picking it up, I was transported back in time as I tried to imagine how it got there. I realized that long ago, Native Americans roamed these hills in search of game. Perhaps an errant arrow launched from a primitive bow had missed its mark, or it could be that the arrow had hit the target, the deer ran before expiring on the site of the pipeline. I’ll never know the answer, of course, but it is a mind-stretcher just to consider the possibility of what may have happened hundreds of years ago.

That’s not the first arrow head I’ve recovered while scouting for turkeys. A couple more their way into my pocket until I could get home with my special treasures.

On another occasion, I was walking along a pipeline on our hunting club, stopping in a patch of clover to listen for a gobbler. Looking down, I spotted a 4-leaf clover right between my boots. Did it bring me luck? If memory serves, I was able to call in and bring down a gobbler that day.

When you’re out turkey hunting this spring, it’s always an adrenalin rush to be able to locate and call in a mature turkey gobbler. If the turkeys don’t cooperate, though, be on the lookout for some of these special treasures that when found can make failing to get a gobbler not such a bad deal after all.

“Sometimes hunting turkeys can produce special treasures, like dropped antlers and arrowheads.” – Glynn Harris photo

PineBelt Multi-Purpose Agency hosts Bingo games at Robert Riddle Senior Center

Tiane Bradley (l) and Conchita Doyle (r) of Pine Belt

Seniors enjoyed a fun day of bingo with Conchita Doyle and Tiane Bradley with Pinbelt Multi-Purpose Agency at the Jackson Council on the Aging Robert Riddle Senior Center, located at 120 Polk Avenue in Jonesboro, LA. After the games were played and the winners received their prizes, Conchita thanked several Jackson Parish businesses for helping make the event a success.

Pine Belt Multi-Purpose Community Action Agency, Inc. has been a beacon of service since its inception in 1980, dedicated to combating poverty across six parishes in North and Central Louisiana. This non-profit organization diligently works to uplift low-income residents through a variety of outreach centers and programs such as Head Start, Childhood and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), and Disaster Relief Assistance. These initiatives are structured to provide residents with opportunities to improve their economic standing, thereby enhancing their quality of life.

Ponderings……

Language is an art — and marriage is the gallery where half the paintings are hung upside down. Words have two lives: denotation (the dictionary version) and connotation (the emotional baggage they bring to the party). The trouble starts when two people bring different baggage handlers.

“Five minutes.”
In the male dictionary, that phrase is a stopwatch: exactly 300 seconds. In the female dictionary, it’s a flexible time zone that expands to accommodate eyeliner, the perfect earrings, and a last-minute dishwasher triage. So when the husband asks, “When will you be ready?” and the wife says, “Five minutes,” the husband hears a sprint; the wife hears a scenic detour. Either way, the car ride will include an argument about whether “on time” is a suggestion or a felony.

Nothing.”
When a man says he’s thinking “nothing,” he’s not being evasive—he’s blissfully blank. His mental whiteboard is clean; life is a hammock, and the brain is on vacation. When a woman says “nothing,” it’s a covert operations briefing: plans, feelings, timelines, and a five-year contingency plan all wrapped in two syllables. If your wife says “nothing,” consider it a red flag, a smoke signal, and a call to the nearest counselor—preferably one who accepts emergency margaritas.

The sigh.
A man’s sigh is a victory horn: lawn mowed, fish filleted, deer rack admired—mission accomplished. A woman’s sigh is a forensic report: it catalogs your idiocy, timestamps it, and files it under “Do Not Repeat.” Keep making her sigh, and you’ll graduate from “nothing” to “we need to talk” faster than you can say “remote control.”

“Go ahead.”
For men, “go ahead” is a green light, a verbal thumbs-up. For women, it’s a dare wrapped in sarcasm: “Go ahead—explain why buying that thing is a brilliant idea.” If she says “go ahead” about the expensive purchase, treat it like a landmine: do not, under any circumstances, step on it.

Words trip us up because we’re using the same language with different subtitles. That’s why marriage counselors get paid—either that or they’re masochists who enjoy listening to couples argue about the semantics of socks.

And then there’s the one place where subtitles aren’t needed: the message of love and forgiveness. The Bible puts it simply: “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” Even in the messiest gallery of human communication, that message hangs in plain view—no translation required.

Death Notices

Barbara (Grissom) Vail
November 27, 1941 – April 1, 2026

Barbara Louise Grissom Vail, age 84 of Quitman, Louisiana, passed into the arms of Jesus on April 1, 2026 to join her husband. A woman devoted to her family; Barbara was the epitome of a 1960’s homemaker. She was a good cook, housekeeper, money manager, organizer and seamstress. Her hobbies included quilting, crocheting and tending to her flowers. Before choosing to be a dedicated homemaker and mother, she worked as a soda jerk at Scroggins in Jonesboro.

She loved her husband of 64 years dearly, as well as her two daughters, four grandchildren and especially her eight great grandchildren. She provided after school care, snacks and transportation for the grands and even made it a point to teach them how to play Old Maid, Go Fish and Dominos. If the grandkids were involved in any extracurricular activities from preschool through college, she was there to support them.

Her Christian service included nursery worker, hospitality and Sunday school secretary. She faithfully assisted her husband in his roles of Deacon and Sunday school teacher.

While still able, Barbara was willing to open her home and cook for any family or church fellowship. She was never too timid to feed a preacher for Sunday lunch.

Barbara is survived by her daughters, Cindy Hammons, Angie Horn (Greg); grandchildren, Ashley Hines (Jeff), Daniel Hammons (Mollye), Samantha Taylor (Joshua) and Mallory Willis (Caleb); great grandchildren, Alley Hines, Evelyn Hammons, Jacob Hammons, Logan Hammons, Colby Taylor, Mason Taylor, Liam Willis and Gideon Willis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Cecil Vail; father, Thurman Grissom; mother, Mildred Grissom; sister, Mary Edith McBride; brother, Bobby Grissom; and son-in-law, Jeff Hammons.

Friends may visit with the family on Monday, April 6, 2026 at Fellowship Baptist Church from 9:30 AM until time of funeral service. Funeral services are set to begin at 11:00 AM with Bro. Craig Stephens officiating. Burial will follow in Antioch Cemetery under the direction of Southern-Edmonds Funeral Home.

Serving the family as pallbearers will be Mike McBride, Richie Vail, Jeff Hines, Joshua Taylor, Jerry Wayne Robinson and Mark Robinson.

Almarene Graham
July 17, 1941 – March 24, 2026

Sister Almarene Graham went to be with the Lord on March 24, 2026 at the age of 74. Visitation was held on April 4, 2026 followed by her Celebration of Life Service at Travelers Rest Baptist Church in Jonesboro, officiated by Pastor Zettie L. Moore and under the direction of Paradise Funeral Home in Jonesboro, La.

Zalaysha Johnson
November 5, 1983 – March 20, 2026

Ms. Zalaysha Johnson passed away on March 20, 2026 at the age of 42. The Life Celebration service was held on Saturday, April 4, 2026 at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Hodge, La. under the direction of Paradise Funeral Home in Jonesboro, La.

DOTD Announces Lane Closures on Various Routes in Jackson Parish to Begin April 1st

Monroe – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announces that final pass for storm debris removal along state routes will begin April 1st, 2026, in Jackson Parish.

Contracted debris removal for the Winter Weather Storm Event began on February 9th, 2026, throughout the impacted areas, and has been substantially completed. To ensure the removal of hazards within the Rights-of-Way (ROWs), crews will conduct one final pass to address the punch list of remaining hazards.

As a reminder, any debris placed on state roadways after the final pass is completed must be removed through normal waste management channels and will not be removed by state contractors.

DOTD would like to remind citizens of the following important tips to assist with the debris removal process.

-State contractors are only able to remove debris from the state right-of-way.

-A good rule of thumb for ensuring the debris is on the right of way is to place it on the roadside of the utility poles.

-Please do not put debris on power lines, fire hydrants, utility stub-outs, or anything that would hinder the claw that grabs the debris.
