The district 1B schedule played to an end on Friday with both Quitman and Weston splitting their games played at home. In boys action, both contests were for firsts in a sense with Quitman and Doyline playing for first place and Weston needing a win for their first victory in district play, Weston achieved their goal 52-48 but the Wolverines fell short in their quest to take the top spot, losing a tough 55-47 contest to district champion Doyline.
In girls competition, neither Quitman or Weston had a chance at first place as Castor had already wrapped up the title. As it turns out with Quitman downing Doyline 68-32 and Weston falling to Castor 55-43 both squads end district play with 3-3 records as they head into postseason play.
Weston 52 Castor 48 (boys): Baskets by Bryce Zehr and Daniel Watlington down the stretch broke a 47-47 tie and lifted Weston to a 52-48 victory over Castor giving the Wolves their first district victory in their final 1B contest of the season.
With the win, Weston broke their five game slide in district play and climbed back over the .500 mark at 15-14 on the year. Castor dropped their fourth straight 1B contest and dropped to 11-17 overall.
Zehr led Weston with 16 points and 8 rebounds followed by 11 points from Tait Henderson. The Wolves also got a big effort from Lajavion Harris whose 9 points was his second best of the season. Watlington finished with 7 points and Nathan Wages had four points and a season best 8 rebounds. Ethan Taylor and Juan Gonzalez added three and two points respectively.
Doyline 55 Quitman 47 (boys): The Quitman gym was rocking when Eli Walker hit a three pointer to draw the Wolverines to within 49-47 completing a five point run but that was as close as QHS would get as Doyline scored the final 6 points to close out the game. It was a game of runs in the winner take all district 1B battle with Doyline jumping out to a 26-15 lead only to see Quitman come storming back with a 14 point run to go on top before both team entered the final frame tied at 36 each. Eli Walker hit five 3-pointers to lead Quitman in scoring with 23 points with Logan Ponder chipping in with 10. Braden Smith and Riley Duck added five each with Noah Leach and Grant Williams scoring two apiece.
Quitman 68 Doyline 32 (girls) Leading by 9-8, Quitman went on a 22-3 run to pave the way to the blowout victory that evened their district record to 3-3 and secured their 21st victory of the year against just 10 losses. Cali Deal scored 20 points to lead the Lady Wolverines who also got “double digit” scoring performances from Anna Leach and Jaleigh Burns who tallied 13 and 11 points each. The two Taylors, as in Harvey and Borland,scored added six points each with Hallie Kate Pullig finishing with four. AJ Gray, Emma Walker, Brooklyn Brown and Lanee Cheatwood also got into the act with two points each.
Castor 55 Weston 43 (girls) A 23-7 first quarter deficit was too much for Weston to overcome despite a season, second best, scoring effort of 16 points by Lexie Millien. who along with Jacie Ledford also pulled down 7 rebounds. Lainee Trosclair added 11 for the Lady Wolves and Carly Jo Griffin chipped in with 9 points and a team best 8 boards. Carlynn Waters finished with five and Anslee Aldy tallied two while Nadia Siadek contributed four rebounds and blocked three shots. With the victory Castor completed district 1B play with a 6-0 record and improved to 22-4 on the year while Weston fell to 3-3 in district and 16-13 overall.
