Prep Baseball Report: Quitman and Weston end week with wins

Quitman and Weston ended the week on a strong note with both baseball teams taking tournament victories on the road on Saturday. The wins offset hardships earlier in the week that saw the Wolverines fall in their opener of the Many Tournament and Weston losing their first two games in the East Ascension / Zachary Tournament.

By virtue of playing four Division I teams, including those ranked #1, #4 and #7 and a Division III school, Weston enters the week ranked #8 in Division IV, despite having the only losing record in the top ten at 2-3 on the year. Quitman sits one spot behind at #9 with a 2-1 record.

East Ascension 7 Weston 0: The Wolves could manage only one hit against the 4th ranked Spartans in the opener of the prestigious EA / Zachary tournament. Tayt Culpepper did a good job of keeping Weston close allowing only five hits and only two earned runs over five innings of work. Tait Henderson got the Wolves only hit, while Colton Blundell also drew a walk.

Many 5 Quitman 4: A two out, two run homerun by Many after an error put a runner on base, tied the score in the bottom of the fifth and then the Tigers won it and then another error after back to back singles gave the tourney host the winning run. Quitman twice held early leads heading into the fateful frame. The first was a 1-0 advantage after Hudson Pullig’s first inning double scored Kace West who had reached on and error in the top of the first. After Many had tied the score at 1-1 in the second, Quitman struck again, this time scoring three runs after batting around, including getting five runners on after two outs. Pullig led QHS with two hits while West, John Raegan Hasley and Braden Hobbs all got singles. Hayden Davis was the hard luck loser going five innings without allowing an earned run.

St. Amant 17 Weston 1: Six hits and three walks collected by St. Amant batters led to a 10 run first inning outburst and that combined with 6 Weston errors led to a second straight loss in the EA / Zachary Tournament. Tayt Culpepper knocked in Braden Theriot with a run in the top of the fourth but it wasn’t enough to keep the game going after Weston could do no more damage

Ian Tilley and Asher Shultz also hit doubles and drove in two runs each as did Jake Potts and Braden Hobbs. Pete Simonelli pitched the first two innings to gain the victory and helped his own cause by scoring three runs.
