Tons of Runs! Prep Softball Recap

With four more victories this past week, the season opening winning streak has now reached 8 games for Quitman, who is now the #1 ranked team in Division V among “non-select” schools.  Just down the road, fellow Jackson Parish school and district 1B competitor, Weston, continued their “win one big, lose one big” routine to end the week with a 2-2 record. 

Tuesday, Feb. 20th

Quitman 4 Glenbrook 3: Maggie Guyotte slapped a single up the middle to score Anna Leach in the bottom of the seventh inning for the walk-off win. For the first time this year Quitman trailed after the third inning but Hallie Kate Pullig walked and scored on a double by Kinsley Ponder in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 3 apiece, setting up Guyotte’s heroics. Leach and Madison Chaplin scored in the third on a single by Cali Deal to give QHS a 2-1 lead but Glenbrook came back to score a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Brenna Lamkin threw three innings of one hit ball to pick up the win in relief of Deal who struck out six in four innings in the circle.

Friday, Feb. 23rd

Quitman 9 Airline 1: The one-two punch in Qutman’s lineup, leadoff batter Madison Chaplin(3 hits, 2B, 2 Runs, 2 RBI) and second batter, Maggie Guyotte, who hit her first home run of the year, drove in three and scored twice, did most of the damage as Quitman scored 7 runs in the first two innings to knock out Class 5A Airline in the the Lady Wolverines opener of the Pineville Tourney. Eighth grader Briley Bowers also got two hits and scored a run while fellow sub freshmen Hallie Kate Pullig got a hit and scored and Kinsley Ponder got a hit and knocked in two. Brenna Lamkin also got an RBI. Zoee Williams and Anna Leach each got a hit and scored, Karley Huckaby hit a single and got an RBI while Cali Deal also got a hit as all 10 starters contributed. Guyotte picked up her third win of the year by throwing five innings and giving up just three hits and one run.

Quitman 8 Hanville 2: Cali Deal was dominant in the circle, striking out 10 and giving up just one run, while also getting two hits and driving in two runs. Madison Chaplin hit a home run, scored three times and had an RBI. Kinsley Ponder, Karly Huckaby and Anna Leach all got two hits and Maggie Guyotte also got a hit, scored twice and drove in a run. Briley Bowers added a hit and a run and Hallie Kate Pullig hit a single.

Saturday, Feb. 24

Weston 23 Bastrop 10: Jacie Ledford hit a pair of home runs and a double, drove in six and scored three times to power the Lady Wolves to the victory in the slugfest that saw both teams combine for 34 hits. Carlynn Waters also had a big day with three hits, 4 runs scored and an RBI as did Gracie Mudge who also got three hits, scored twice and drove in a run and Olivia Marsh, who had three hits and scored three runs. Keeley Davis got two hits and scored two runs and both Jaylin Williams and Raelynn Shell got a hit and scored three and two runs respectively. Carly Jo Griffin and Anslee Aldy, who was the winning pitcher, both added a double.

Quitman 16 Menard 0: The Lady Wolverines swept through their second tournament in two weeks by scoring 8 in the second inning and adding 7 more in the fourth to “mercy rule” Menard. All that was really needed was the one run scored in the first as Cali Deal and Brenna Lamkin allowed only one hit apiece to combine on the shutout. Karla Huckaby, Deal and Madison Chaplin, who also scored three times, got two hits and drove in three each, with Maggie Guyotte also driving in three, hitting a triple and scoring twice. Briley Bowers and Anna Leach both got a hit and scored twice and Zoee Williams smashed a double, drove in one and scored. Eighth graders Kinsley Ponder and Hallie Kate Pullig both scored a run and Taylor Harvey got a hit and an RBI.

Evangel 21 Weston 0: For the fourth straight Lady Wolves game the winning team scored at least 20 runs, this time being Evangel in the Polar Bear Classic played in Monroe. Olivia Marsh and Jacie Ledford got the only two hits for Weston with Anslee Aldy taking the loss in the three inning affair.

Peabody 15 JHHS 0: The Lady Tigers fell in their season opener as Peabody took advantage of 10 walks to score 13 first inning runs. JHHS was unable to get a hit off Peabody pitching but Alaina Ashcraft, did get on twice via walks. Bond, Qualls and Thompson also reached on walks.
