District 1B: Weston boys, Quitman girls end district play with victories

The district 1B schedule played to an end on Friday with both Quitman and Weston splitting their games played at home. In boys action, both contests were for firsts in a sense with Quitman and Doyline playing for first place and Weston needing a win for their first victory in district play, Weston achieved their goal 52-48 but the Wolverines fell short in their quest to take the top spot, losing a tough 55-47 contest to district champion Doyline.

In girls competition, neither Quitman or Weston had a chance at first place as Castor had already wrapped up the title. As it turns out with Quitman downing Doyline 68-32 and Weston falling to Castor 55-43 both squads end district play with 3-3 records as they head into postseason play.

Weston 52 Castor 48 (boys): Baskets by Bryce Zehr and Daniel Watlington down the stretch broke a 47-47 tie and lifted Weston to a 52-48 victory over Castor giving the Wolves their first district victory in their final 1B contest of the season.

With the win, Weston broke their five game slide in district play and climbed back over the .500 mark at 15-14 on the year. Castor dropped their fourth straight 1B contest and dropped to 11-17 overall.

Zehr led Weston with 16 points and 8 rebounds followed by 11 points from Tait Henderson. The Wolves also got a big effort from Lajavion Harris whose 9 points was his second best of the season. Watlington finished with 7 points and Nathan Wages had four points and a season best 8 rebounds. Ethan Taylor and Juan Gonzalez added three and two points respectively.

Doyline 55 Quitman 47 (boys): The Quitman gym was rocking when Eli Walker hit a three pointer to draw the Wolverines to within 49-47 completing a five point run but that was as close as QHS would get as Doyline scored the final 6 points to close out the game. It was a game of runs in the winner take all district 1B battle with Doyline jumping out to a 26-15 lead only to see Quitman come storming back with a 14 point run to go on top before both team entered the final frame tied at 36 each. Eli Walker hit five 3-pointers to lead Quitman in scoring with 23 points with Logan Ponder chipping in with 10. Braden Smith and Riley Duck added five each with Noah Leach and Grant Williams scoring two apiece.

Quitman 68 Doyline 32 (girls) Leading by 9-8, Quitman went on a 22-3 run to pave the way to the blowout victory that evened their district record to 3-3 and secured their 21st victory of the year against just 10 losses. Cali Deal scored 20 points to lead the Lady Wolverines who also got “double digit” scoring performances from Anna Leach and Jaleigh Burns who tallied 13 and 11 points each. The two Taylors, as in Harvey and Borland, scored added six points each with Hallie Kate Pullig finishing with four. AJ Gray, Emma Walker, Brooklyn Brown and Lanee Cheatwood also got into the act with two points each.

Castor  55 Weston 43 (girls) A 23-7 first quarter deficit was too much for Weston to overcome despite a season, second best, scoring effort of 16 points by Lexie Millien. who along with Jacie Ledford also pulled down 7 rebounds. Lainee Trosclair added 11 for the Lady Wolves and Carly Jo Griffin chipped in with 9 points and a team best 8 boards. Carlynn Waters finished with five and Anslee Aldy tallied two while Nadia Siadek contributed four rebounds and blocked three shots. With the victory Castor completed district 1B play with a 6-0 record and improved to 22-4 on the year while Weston fell to 3-3 in district and 16-13 overall.

JHHS closes out district play with split at Many

The 2023-24 basketball season has been a trying one for both the girls and boys basketball teams at Jonesboro-Hodge to say the least. The records for both show many more losses than wins.

It would have been understandable if both squads would have just played out the string in the final district contest against Many but to the credit of the players on both squads they closed out their district season showing determination and pride. For the boys the effort was rewarded with a 45-43 victory, their first on the road since the fifth game of the season. The girls weren’t as fortunate, falling 38-35 but the effort was there.

In all probability, the loss by the girls ends the Lady Tigers season at 6-24 overall and 1-9 in district 3-2A play in head coach Shan Jackson’s first year as JHHS is currently at #35 n the Division IV power ratings, where only the top 28 qualify for the postseason.

The victory by the boys was HUGE as even though their record now is only 5-19 and 2-8 in 3-2A play, what is more important is that the Tigers climbed to #27 in the rankings.

Many 38 JHHS 35 (Girls) –  In the contest that saw 38 fouls called and JHHS finishing with four starters with four fouls each, the Lady Tigers fell just short despite a spirited road effort. Neesha Johnson paced JHHS in scoring with 15 points, including six in the second quarter that helped the Lady Tigers to a 13-11 halftime advantage. Sanaa Tatum added 7 and Jalenya Jackson 6 while Angel Moss chipped in with four points and McKenzie Bradford hit a trey.

JHHS  45 Many 43 (Boys) When JHHS scored just 5 points in the third quarter it looked like the same ole script of getting outscored late was starting to show once again. Not on this night! JHHS dug deep to outscore Many 14-11 in the final frame as DeMarious Burns scored six of his 8 points on the night and Daelen Boston added four of his 11 he totaled to lead the fourth quarter surge. Za’mauryian Palmer topped JHHS in scoring with 14 with Dewayne Palmer adding four. Ariyu’un Bradford, Kamerin Bradley, Dylan Hayes and Samuel Combs all tallied two each as well.

Saline Head Coach Klint Robinson and nephew Trent Ledbetter

The Saline boys also had an easy time of it, running roughshod over the Panthers by an 84-54 margin to move their 2C record to win their 20th game of the year against 13 losses and end the district campaign at 4-4. Headgear of Bucks Quite a Story

Here’s hoping your deer season was as successful as you hoped it would be. If you have been sitting down to meals of chicken-fried backstrap steaks or a tasty roast or
found your breakfast of eggs tasting especially good with rounds or links of venison
sausage on the side, you have for sure been successful.

If you’re anxiously waiting for a call from the taxidermist telling you the mount
of your trophy is ready for pick-up and hanging on the wall, pat yourself on the back; it’s been a good year for you.

You may be having withdrawal symptoms now that season is over and you really
wish you get to spend just one more frosty morning in a deer stand. You’re not alone in this. Scores of hunters feel the same way.

What can deer hunters do as a form of recovery to help you get over your addiction to chasing deer? Here’s a suggestion – head for your woods and begin looking for shed antlers of the big buck you hunted all season but never showed up. Now that antlers are beginning to drop, the next several weeks offer the opportunity to locate sheds
before the mice and squirrels begin gnawing on them.

Here’s what happens in the world of the deer. Buck deer drop their antlers in late
winter or early spring. Soon after losing their headgear, they start growing a new set of antlers they’ll have until this time next year. This new set begins as fuzzy knobs growing on the pedicles which are located on the buck’s head between his eyes and ears. The newly formed antlers are soft and subject to damage and for this reason, bucks are shy and reclusive; they’re protective of this new growth.

A couple of months before shedding antlers, bucks use them to hook and thrash
bushes, brush and small saplings and to fight other bucks to establish dominance. Bushes and bucks are in no danger of being gored and thrashed in spring and summer because he is protecting his newly forming soft antlers.

Velvet is described as “vascular skin that supplies oxygen and nutrients to the growing bone.” This amazing material causes the antler it covers to grow at an amazing rate. In fact, deer antlers grow faster than any other mammal bone. This fast rate of growth actually is a handicap to a buck because of the incredible nutritional demand on deer to re-grow antlers annually.

Once the antlers achieve their full potential for the year, usually by mid-September in our part of the world, the velvet has served its purpose and as it dries and is rubbed off on bushes by the buck, the antler bone actually dies and here’s something I read that gave me pause. What deer hunters see when that big buck comes slipping by the
stand is an animal sporting a head full of dead bone.

Where should you look for the best chance to find shed antlers? If you planted a food plot prior to deer season, searching the plot or trails leading to the plot can often
result in a bit of good luck when you find tines sticking up out of the grass. Another good place to look is where a trail crosses a low fence or stream small enough for the buck to jump across. Antlers can sometimes be jarred loose when the buck lands on the other side of the fence or stream.

So for folks puzzled about deer antlers, maybe this bit of information will answer
your questions.

There is a measure of excitement to hold in your hands the head gear of a big buck that will whet your appetite for what he’ll look like once hunting seasons roll around again this coming fall.

The entire process of bucks growing velvet covered delicate antlers to them becoming hardened and eventually being shed just to do it all again every year is one of nature’s most amazing and fascinating feats.

”This is the time of year to begin searching for shed antlers as bucks drop them before beginning growing a new set.” Glynn Harris photo

Ponderings…..

What are you giving up for Lent?

Some members of the family of God can answer that one quickly. They are members of a body of Christ known as a “High Church” or a “Liturgical Church.” The other congregations that don’t follow the liturgical calendar are known as “Low Church.” I’m not sure where that designation came from, but it is slightly nonsensical.

This might help you. Lent is “is the solemn Christian religious observance in the liturgical year commemorating the 40 days Jesus Christ spent fasting in the desert and enduring temptation by Satan, according to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, before beginning his public ministry. In its modern manifestation, we talk about preparing our hearts to meet the resurrected Jesus on Easter Sunday. We use Lent to make room for Jesus.

One of the ways people prepare during Lent is to “give up” something or “add” some spiritual discipline to their daily schedules. I have seen these projects run the gamut. Some of the Lenten disciplines are heart transforming. Sometimes Lenten practices become lifelong habits. There is another side to this Lenten discipline thing.

Some people use Lent as a do-over for New Year’s Resolutions which didn’t work out. Some people have discovered they can give up making New Year’s resolutions for Lent. Others I have known, give up candy, chocolate, or other pleasures. I usually give up King Cake for Lent!

The way we talk about Lent points to a flaw in our Christian thinking. We talk about Lent with project language. The season has a starting date, an ending date, and clear, quantifiable goals “to accomplish” in between. After Easter we evaluate Lent with project language. We “did okay” or “only made it two weeks” or “kept our commitment” or “totally failed.”

I want to suggest that our faith is following Jesus. That we need to practice the idea of sojourn. A “sojourn” is a “temporary place to stay.” Faith as a sojourn is about being in the presence of Jesus. It is not about being productive or finishing a project. It is about being with Him.

I hope you have a spiritual discipline that you are practicing during Lent. If so, the sojourn idea would remind you that spiritual disciplines do not transform, they are opportunities to open our lives to the Holy Spirt, who transforms.

Following Jesus is about starting, stopping, and staying as He leads us. We are so goal oriented in following Jesus, that I sometimes wonder if we are not wearing spiritual pedometers and are keeping up with the steps we have taken while following Him. I know that somewhere a budding philanthropist has designed a Spiritual Growth Chart. You get it in the App store!

Maybe you need the words of Jesus on this matter. “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

What if Lent is all about resting in Jesus while being with Him?

Not His Suggestions

God’s Commandments, not His Suggestions…

(Deuteronomy 5:7-21 KJV)

Verse 7: Thou shalt have none other gods before me.

Verse 8: Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:

Verse 9: Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me,

Verse 10: And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.

Verse 11: Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Verse 12: Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee.

Verse 13: Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work:

Verse 14: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou.

Verse 15: And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the Lord thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the Lord thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.

Verse 16: Honour thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

Verse 17: Thou shalt not kill.

Verse 18: Neither shalt thou commit adultery.

Verse 19: Neither shalt thou steal.

Verse 20: Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour.

Verse 21: Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour’s wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour’s house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour
