Remember This?

William Bruce “Bill” Rose was an unsavory character. Police arrested him numerous times for non-violent crimes. In 1964, 22-year-old Bill left his 18-year-old wife, Sharon, and their two-year-old son, William Bruce Rose Jr., and infant daughter, Amy. In 1965, Sharon met Stephen Bailey and married him the following January. When they married, Sharon told Billy and Amy that Stephen was their father, and they took his last name.

As a teenager, Billy disliked the name because kids teased him for being Bill Bailey. Stephen and Sharon raised Billy, Amy, and their only child together, Stuart, in a Pentecostal church. Their children often performed in church as the Bailey Trio, but there were problems at home. Billy and his stepfather fought constantly. When he was 17 years old, Billy accidentally learned that Stephen was not his biological father. Billy knew nothing about his biological father, but he began going by the name Billy Rose. For better or worse, Billy never met his father as an adult.

In 1984, Bill Rose, who had recently been paroled from prison, disappeared from Marion, Illinois. Three years later, in May 1987, police arrested 39-year-old James Faulkner for murdering Bill sometime between May 1 and July 4, 1984. The family had kept the murder a secret until James’s son Jimmy revealed it to Katie Adams, a counselor with the area Youth Services Bureau. At her insistence, Jimmy contacted the police.

Jimmy told investigators that Bill was killed in their home at 409 E. DeYoung Street in Marion. Jimmy said that on the night of Bill’s murder, “My mom and dad and Bill went out drinking.” Later, they returned to the Faulkners’ home where the trio began having intercourse. At some point, James left the bedroom, went to Jimmy’s bedroom, and woke him. James told his then 15-year-old son that he needed him to see something. Jimmy followed instructions and walked toward the bedroom. He noticed that his father was holding a long knife. As Jimmy stood there in shocked silence, his father stabbed Bill, then dragged Bill into the bathroom. He said “Sayonara, Bill” and finished him off with a baseball bat. Jimmy said his parents wrapped Bill in painter’s cloth and tied it with a piece of clothesline. James put the knife into a jug of bleach. James had his wife and son help load Bill’s body into the trunk of their car, and the family drove five miles to a remote wooded area known as Crenshaw Crossing. James, Judith, and Jimmy removed the body from their trunk, and they rolled it down one of the area’s many embankments. James covered the body with debris to disguise it. The family returned home and James and Judith began scrubbing the floor and carpet in the bedroom. James told Jimmy to throw the knife in the city reservoir a few blocks south of their home and to put the baseball bat on a public baseball diamond. Jimmy complied. Jimmy later showed investigators where he had thrown the knife and divers retrieved the weapon. Judith’s testimony initially agreed with Jimmy’s, but she later changed her story to help James. On September 9, 1987, James was found guilty of murder even though Bill’s body had not been found, and he was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole. Bill’s body has never been found.

Had Billy Rose wanted to meet his biological father as an adult, he never had the chance. Like his father, Billy was arrested numerous times for various crimes. Just as he had done as a child in church, Billy always found comfort in singing. Billy became a famous singer. The world knows William Bruce “Billy” Rose Jr. as Axl Rose, lead singer for Guns N Roses.

Sarah (Robinson) Whitten
February 6, 1939 – July 10, 2026

With hearts full of love and gratitude, we celebrate the life of Sarah “Grand” Whitten —a beloved mother, grandmother, teacher, faithful Christian, and friend whose kindness, strength, and generosity left the world a better place.

Born on February 6, 1939, in Shreveport, Louisiana, Sarah was a true Southern lady with a generous heart, a quick wit, and a gift for making everything lovely. She grew up in Jonesboro, Louisiana, raised her own family in Germantown, Tennessee, and spent the last 23 years of her life in Franklin, Tennessee, where she continued to build treasured friendships and create wonderful memories.

Sarah was preceded in death by her father, Dr. George H. Robinson; her mother, Jatis James Robinson; her sister, Jatis Robinson Whitten; her special aunt, Myra Carter; and her second husband, Judge Leon Whitten.

She leaves behind the family she loved beyond measure: her son, Judd Harnage (Michele); her daughter, Leslie Cuevas; and three grandchildren who were the joy of her life—Tanner Harnage, Wyatt Harnage, and Madison Cuevas. Nothing made her smile quite like being their “Grand.” She also leaves behind very special nieces Laurie Whitten James (Robbie) and Katie Whitten-Julazadeh (David) and a nephew Rob Whitten (Abby).

Sarah devoted her career to teaching elementary school, where she nurtured not only young minds but young hearts. Teaching wasn’t simply her profession—it was her calling. Over the years, she changed countless lives, including courageously preventing the kidnapping of one of her students and helping rescue another child from an abusive home.

She stopped teaching when her children were small and became a stay-at-home mom. Being a mother was Sarah’s greatest joy. Whether serving as PTA president, room mother, team mother, or volunteering wherever she was needed, she never missed an opportunity to support her children and their friends. She showed up with love, enthusiasm, and an unwavering belief that family always came first.

Sarah lived a life full of adventure and resilience. She traveled the world, collected stories, and faced every challenge with remarkable courage, including surviving breast cancer. After her kids were grown she, along with her husband Leon, built and opened a beautiful nursing home in Louisiana – Forest Haven. She believed wholeheartedly in one of her favorite sayings: “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” She didn’t just say those words—she lived them.

She found happiness in life’s simple pleasures: cheering on the Tennessee Titans with a heartfelt “Titan Up!” listening to country music, tending to beautiful flowers, taking walks, traveling to new places, and ending the day with a glass of wine shared among dear friends. Sarah was blessed with lifelong friendships in every place she called home, and those friendships were among her greatest treasures.

Sarah’s faith in Christ was the foundation of her life. She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Jonesboro, Louisiana, First United Methodist Church in Germantown, Tennessee, and Forest Hills United Methodist Church in Brentwood, Tennessee. Her faith guided the way she loved, served, and cared for others. She treated people she encountered—with compassion and abundant generosity.

While her family will miss her every day, they are comforted by the countless memories she leaves behind, the values she instilled, and the love that will continue to bind them together. Her life reminds us that the measure of a person is found in the lives they touch, the love they give, and the stories they leave for others to tell.

Sarah’s story was a beautiful one, and it will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know and love her.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23

There will be a Drop-By Visitation / Celebration of Life at Franklin First United Methodist Church on Monday, 7/13/26 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. (Use the entrance closest to Mack Hatcher Pkwy). Rosalie (Young) Robinson Maxwell
August 14, 1937 – July 12, 2026

Rosalie (Young) Robinson Maxwell, 88, passed away on July 12, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of hard work, simple pleasures, and unwavering love for her family. She served her community as a meter maid before spending more than twenty years as a trusted teller at Jackson Parish Bank, where her friendly smile and caring nature made a lasting impression on many customers. When she wasn’t working, Rosalie could often be found bass fishing or camping on Old Saline Lake, tending her flower beds and yard, or enjoying the peace of being outdoors. Of all the blessings in her life, nothing brought her greater happiness than the time she spent with her family, whom she loved with all her heart.

Rosalie is survived by her daughters, Debbie Madere (Ronnie), Edwina Diffey (Terry) and Lisa Nunn (Scotty); grandchildren, Christina Harrell (Jeff), Ronnie Madere, Jr., Sandi Trahan (Corey), Terry Diffey, Jr. (Tish), and Mitch Nunn; great-grandchildren, Makayla Harrell, Maddie Harrell, Cameron Coleman (Joy), Carson Diffey and Annalise Diffey; great-great-grandchildren, Noah Coleman and Grayson Coleman; sister, Phyllis Lowery; 2 nieces and 1 nephew; and her white ball of fur, “Beau.”

She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Alvin Young; mother, Rosa Ann (Bedgood) Young; sisters, Joyce Marie Young and Juanita Chandler; husbands, Wiley Edwin Robinson and James (Jimmy) Charles Maxwell; and grandson, Joe Nunn.

With wife Jhela and sons Braxton and Camden by his side, Brent Barnett raised his right hand, placed his left on the Bible, and received the official “Oath of Office” that was administered by Jackson Parish Clerk of Court Rachel Shively, thereby designating him as the 72nd Sheriff in Jackson Parish history.

After being voted into the office in the June 27th run-off election, the ceremony held at the Jackson Parish Sheriff’s Office on July 7th in front of local officials and well-wishers marks the third time in his prestigious law enforcement career that Barnett has been “sworn in”, the first being when hired as a Jackson Parish Deputy in 1991 and the second when appointed interim Sheriff of Jackson Parish on November 14th, 2025 following the retirement of Andy Brown.

“I am humbled to be sworn in as Sheriff of Jackson Parish by Clerk of Court Rachel Shively. I want to thank the citizens of Jackson Parish for your support as well as the men and women of the Jackson Parish Sheriff’s Department, my family, and all who attended. It’s truly an honor to serve,” said Barnett.

Raised in Chatham, LA, Barnett graduated from Weston High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology/Psychology from Louisiana Tech University. In 1991, the 35-year law enforcement veteran began his career with the Jackson Parish Sheriff’s Office, first as a patrolman, then advancing through investigative and administrative leadership roles, serving as Chief Investigator, Chief Deputy, and now as Jackson Parish Sheriff.

Alongside his law enforcement career, Barnett has served more than 25 years in the Louisiana Army National Guard, being deployed twice in combat, including Operation Desert Storm in Afghanistan, and achieving the rank of Command Sergeant Major. He has also held key leadership responsibilities during major federal and state emergencies, including being the Jackson Parish Director of Emergency Preparedness.

“Liberty Tree” Planted at Courthouse Commemorating America’s 250th Birthday

Liberty Tree!

In honor of the semiquincentennial anniversary (250 years) of the establishment of the United States of America, which took place on July 4th, a “Liberty Tree” has been planted on the southeast corner of the lawn of the Jackson Parish Courthouse, located at 500 Court Street in Jonesboro.

Provided by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Dr. Mike Strain, DVM, the Liberty Tree pays tribute to U.S. Military Veterans and notable American figures who were instrumental in America gaining its independence.

The 5-year initiative to plant 250 Liberty Trees across the United States by July 4, 2026, was designed to educate the public about the significance of the American Revolution and the sacrifices made in establishing the United States. Introduced by Representative Michael Bayhem of St. Bernard Parish, House Resolution #351 commends the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) for their 250th Liberty Tree Celebration and encourages Louisiana parishes to participate by planting a Liberty Tree in historically significant locations.

Drawdown Alert for Saline Lake Announced

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) announces a Drawdown Alert for Saline Lake, a popular fishing and camping location for residents of Jackson Parish, located between Winnfield and Natchitoches, LA.

In partnership with the Saline Game and Fish Preserve Commission, the LDWF has scheduled the drawdown for on or about July 13th to reduce the further expansion of giant salvinia, improve fish habitat, and reduce excess organic buildup.

According to the statement issued by the LDWF, the lake should dewater at a rate of 𝟰–𝟭𝟬 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗮𝘆, with a maximum drawdown of 𝟴 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲, depending on Red River Pool 3 water levels. The control gates are scheduled to close 𝗢𝗰𝘁. 𝟱, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, allowing the lake to refill ahead of fall, winter, and early spring recreational activities.

During the drawdown, an estimated 𝟮,𝟱𝟬𝟬–𝟯,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗸𝗲. Boaters may still access the main lake from the 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗻 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝘁 𝗥𝗮𝗺𝗽 with small craft, but caution is advised due to exposed underwater obstructions.

Annual water level fluctuations help mimic natural lake cycles and support long-term habitat improvements while maintaining recreational opportunities. Learn more about the Saline Lake Management Plan at https://buff.ly/s4tdtQo.

Mitchell/Porter win 2026 Piney Shootout at Jackson Parish Golf Course

2026 Piney Shootout Champions!
Brad Porter (l), Peyton Mitchell (r)

Individually, Peyton Mitchell and Brad Porter are considered two of the best golfers at the Jackson Parish Golf Course. When combined, they are virtually impossible to beat on their home course. That proved true on Saturday, when the pair topped 9 other two-man teams in the championship flight of the 2026 Piney Shootout.

Competed in a unique format, the Piney Shootout is played 9 holes as a “scramble”, where both players hit from the best shot all the way through the finish of a hol, then, for 9 more holes playing “shamble” style, where both players tee off and then play their own ball from the best tee shot, and ending with 9 holes of 4 ball, where players play their own ball all the way through the hole.

Mitchell and Porter fired a round of 30-30-32 for a 16-under-par total of 92, finishing one better than Pete Simonelli and Eli Walker, who shot a 93 after scoring 31-29-33. Tommy Cruse and Dwayne “Snook” Harrel came in third with rounds of 30-32-35 for a total score of 97.

Trey Howard and Josh Stringer won the first flight with a 102 total, one better than the team of Leigh Cathey and Bobby Taylor who claimed second on a score card playoff over Mike Simonelli and Preston Tuberville after both finished with a 103 total.

Steve Nugent and Chad Kelley claimed the Second Flight title on a score card playoff with Parker Bailey and C.J. Barton after both teams shot 109, one better than third place finisher Phillip Leonard and George Booth who also cashed in as result of yet another scorecard playoff with Gene Posey and Nathan Kennedy.

Jackson Parish Schools To Implement Cost-Saving Measures Due to Loss of Funding

As Jackson Parish Schools prepares for the 2026–2027 school year, we are taking proactive steps to protect classroom instruction while maintaining fiscal responsibility. Due to anticipated reductions in MFP funding and the loss of the property tax renewal, the district is implementing cost-saving measures effective immediately.

These measures include carefully reviewing staffing and hiring decisions, limiting nonessential travel and purchases, reducing discretionary spending and overtime, postponing facility projects unrelated to health or safety, reviewing contracts for potential savings, increasing energy conservation efforts, and closely evaluating operational expenses across the district.

Our priority remains clear: to preserve instructional quality, protect opportunities for our students, minimize the impact on students and employees, and maintain the long-term financial stability of Jackson Parish Schools.

Thank you to our employees, families, and community members for your continued support and understanding as we work together to make responsible decisions for the future of our district.

William Carter, Superintendent
Jackson Parish Schools

Show Your Support! Help JP10U Softball All-Stars Participate in DYS World Series

World Series Qualifier
Jackson Parish 10U All-Stars will play in the Diamond Youth Softball World Series on July 16-19

History has been made! For the first time ever, a youth league softball team representing the Jackson Parish Recreation Department will participate in World Series competition as the JP10U All-Stars will venture to Laurel, MS on July 16-19 to compete against other teams across the nation in hopes of claiming the Diamond Youth Softball (DYS) 2026 National Championship.

Under the guidance of Manager Kristen Allen and Coaches Cheyenne Allen and Bethany Garner, the twelve young ladies representing Jackson Parish are Kylee-Ayn Allen, Malia Gunter, Lyla Hall, Kaylee Hammons, Caylee Mauthe, Ryleigh Puffer, Kadence Sampey, Natalie Sullivan, Mercedes Taylor, River Waggoner, Mez’Meri Walker, and Brenleigh Whitman.

JP10U qualified for the 12-team competition, which fields squads from Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, South Carolina, and Alabama, by finishing as the runner-up in the DYS Louisiana 10U State Tournament, held in Buckeye, LA.

The local “Dandy Dozen” will have the distinction of playing the first game of the tournament when they square off against Columbia, Mississippi in a Pool Play contest at 9:00 am on Thursday, July 16th. Fans can follow the action through Gamechanger.com by searching for JP 10U ALLSTARS.

The winner of that game will begin the double elimination portion of the bracket by taking on the loser of Pool Game #3 between Louisiana state champion Jefferson Parish East and Hope Mill, North Carolina, at 10:00 am on Friday, July 17th, while the loser will play the winner of the game between Saluda, South Carolina and Troy, Alabama at 4:00 pm on Friday.

While the trip to attempt to lay claim to being the nation’s best in the 10 year old age division can be considered a “once in a lifetime” experience there is a flip side to the opportunity that awaits. It is very costly. As the expenses of travel, lodging and meals will fall solely on the shoulders of the team members, donations are being sought to help fray the costs.

You are asked to show your pride in our Jackson Parish representatives and suppport them financially by contacting Kristen Allen at (832) 459-4126 or sending donations via Venmo at @Kristen-Gray-98. Your support is greatly appreciated.
