JHHS “Burns” Delhi Charter 50-6 To Move To 2-0 On The Season

One of the first things you notice when you attend a football game at Delhi Charter High School is their attempt to resemble the University of Florida by using the “Gators” as their moniker, having the same blue and orange color scheme on their uniforms, and even calling their football field the “Swamp”.

After the 50-6 dismantling executed by Jonesboro-Hodge this past Friday night that moved the Tigers to 2-0 for the first time since 2020, Tiger supporters think of the DCHS on-campus gridiron as the “Memory Maker”.

Two years ago, JHHS visited Delhi Charter, and despite losing a thrilling contest, Christian McGuire set a new Tiger single-game receiving record of 230 yards, and Dakota Knox moved into second all-time in single-game passing yards with 295.

This time, Tigers running back/defensive back Lon’trevious “Tre” Burns enjoyed a “game for the ages,” delivering one of the best individual all-around performances in Tiger history and setting what is believed to be yet another school record.

His final individual statistics were simply “eye-popping.” Offensively, Burns rushed for 108 yards in only 9 carries while scoring twice on runs of 12 and 61 yards and also ran for a two-point conversion. He added another touchdown on a 65-yard catch and scored on three straight Tiger possessions.

Impressive right? Check out what he did on defense!

Burns led JHHS with 8 tackles that included what is believed to be a single-game school record of FIVE sacks. He actually should have been given six, but despite corralling the DCHS quarterback behind the line, it was ruled as no gain, coming at the end of his making five tackles in a row. He also forced a fumble and recovered another, which he almost returned for a touchdown.

“It was without a doubt his best game as a Tiger and one of the better all-around performances by a player that I can remember,” said JHHS head coach Terrance Blankenship. “But he wasn’t the only one who had a great game.”

The coach, who saw his team move to 2-0 on the year for only the second time in his school record 14-year tenure, was right about that! Several Tigers deserve special mention for their help in scoring the most points and securing the biggest one-sided victory since the 51-0 win over Bunkie in 2021.

King Campbell – Completed 4 of 8 attempts for 143 yards and 2 touchdowns, passed for a two-point conversion, and made 2 point-after-touchdown (PAT) kicks.
JuQuan Qualls – Returned a punt 49 yards for a touchdown and scored on a 2-point conversion catch.
Michael Malone – Recovered 2 fumbles and returned one 15 yards for a touchdown.
Reginald Hemphill – Made a career-best 5 tackles, including two for a loss and one sack.
Dylan Hayes – Recorded 2 tackles for a loss and one sack, blocked a punt, and recovered a fumble for a touchdown.
Channing Gray Jr. – Caught a 26-yard touchdown pass.

As a team, JHHS recorded 303 yards in total offense and was an impressive 4/5 in third-down conversions, while the defense limited Delhi Charter to just 166 yards and only five first downs, and forced two turnovers, both of which ended up in Tiger touchdowns.

“I am very pleased with the total team effort,” concluded Blankenship. “It was the kind of showing that you don’t really expect this early in the season.”

Next week! Always the most anticipated game of the year, JHHS will travel to Winnfield to take on its oldest rival for the 100th time in the series, one of the oldest and longest in LHSAA history. On a side note, this is the first time in recent memory that both teams enter the matchup with a 2-0 record. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at Dokes-Walker Stadium in Winnfield.

Junior High Basketball Recap: QJH boys win two; WJH girls still undefeated

Graphic by Sideline Moments

Local schools Quitman and Weston traveled to West Monroe this past Thursday and Friday for the Claiborne Christian School Junior High basketball tournament. The locals won four of the six games scheduled, with the Quitman boys winning twice, the Weston girls running their unbeaten streak this season to 13 straight with a victory in their only game of the tourney, QJH girls winning one and losing one to give them a 5-7 record, and the WJH boys dropping both games they played to fall to 3-10 overall.

Thursday Games

Quitman 19 Simsboro 18 (girls): Lily Tolar made only two points, but they were huge, as the last-minute basket after she came into the contest for the first time lifted the Lady Wolverines to a thrilling victory after falling behind 10-0 to start the game. Early on, it was all Simsboro who turned a 10-2 first-quarter lead into a 14-5 advantage at the half. The second half was a different story. Elliot Savage, who led Quitman in scoring with 13, scored 7 straight points for QJH to narrow the deficit to 16-12, setting up the furious 4th-quarter rally that was fueled by 4 points from Jaicee Hall.

Quitman 50 Simsboro 34 (boys): Aiden Reed and Jaxen Culpepper both reached “double digits” in scoring with 18 and 10 points each to lead the high-scoring attack. Luke Davie scored 6, Jase Reed finished with 4, Bentley Ponder had 3, and both Sheppard Norred and Khyree Boston tallied two points apiece. Kutter Blalock added a free throw to round out the scoring for the Wolverines

Friday Games

Weston 31 FCCS 2 (girls): The Lady Wolves tied a national record that can never be broken by holding Family Community Christian School scoreless for the first three quarters in yet another dominating effort. Kate Keiffer and Saniyah Salsberry led in scoring with 14 and 8 points each, while Ryleigh Puffer finished with four and Bailey McCurday tallied three. Brooklyn Keiffer and Shelby Johns chipped in with a basket apiece as well.

Claiborne Christian 22 Weston 18 (boys): The Wolves took a 10-4 halftime lead, but the tourney host won the second half by an 18-8 margin. Hank Snuggs led WJH in scoring with 6 points, followed by Ashton Paggett and Kaine Stassen scoring 4 points each. Eli Jones chipped in with a basket.

Quitman 35, Weston 4 (boys): It was all Quitman in the all-Jackson Parish matchup as the Wolverines took a 15-2 first-quarter lead that grew to 24-4 at the half. QJH had a balanced scoring attack, with 9 players making points, led by Aiden Reed’s 7 points and 6 from Luke Davis. Four players scored four points (Jamikal Hall, Khyree Boston, Bentley Ponder, Jase Reed), and the trio of Kutter Blalock, Sheppard Norred, and Asher Norred added a basket each. Hank Snuggs and Kaine Stassen scored two points each for Weston.

Upcoming Schedule:

Weston will host Saline for a girls and boys game as well as a girls “B” game on Tuesday, September 15th, and then host the Weston Tourney on the 17th and 18th. Quitman will travel to Doyline on Monday, September 14th, before taking part in the Weston Tourney.

Glynn Harris Outdoors and Fishing Report

As a long-time outdoor writer, my paths have crossed with many others in the same profession. Before outdoor writing organizations ceased to exist, my membership in the Louisiana Outdoor Writers Association (LOWA) and the more regional group, the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association (SEOPA), were extremely valuable to me.

Not only was I able to learn from more experienced writers and broadcasters, the lifelong friendships that resulted were, to me, more important.

Although our annual conventions are now only memorable events of the past, I still get phone calls, text messages or rare visits from some of these special people. When I ponder over the list of some who have remained extra special to me, one name seems to have a way of working its way to the top.
Jim Spencer.

I know Iโ€™m not nor have I ever been what I consider in his class as far as accomplishments not only in the turkey woods but behind the keyboard of the computer. I canโ€™t touch him or his level of passion in chasing, occasionally mastering and often being beaten by wild turkey gobblers. When it comes to sitting down and writing about turkey hunting exploits, I sit and marvel at his level of expertise at telling just what happened, why it happened, how he messed up or succeeded and just spilling his guts in ways only Jim can do.

While singing his praises to the heights, there is one fly in the ointment when it comes to just who this special guy is. That fly?

He lies. Oh, I donโ€™t mean intentionally but I have caught him into telling at least half a dozen fibs that have been proven to be just that โ€“ outright lies.

I think the first time I caught him in a lie was after he wrote and published his book โ€œBad Birdsโ€ in 2010. He said โ€œThis will be the last turkey book Iโ€™ll ever write; Iโ€™m doneโ€, or something like that. Well, guess what โ€“ in 2020, he wrote โ€œBad Birds 2โ€. Again, I heard the same comment about it being his last one. So what does he do in 2023 but come up with โ€œBad Birds 3โ€.

Since then, Spencer has come out with two or three more books about turkey hunting, proving that the man is absolutely obsessed by wild turkeys, and as much as heโ€™d like to say heโ€™s done with writing turkey books, he just canโ€™t put a lid on it; he has to keep writing about these birds, although he is prone to lie and say itโ€™s his last one. Itโ€™s like turkeys have control of his brain and just wonโ€™t let go.

Last week, I received a book in the mail, and it didnโ€™t surprise me one bit to open the package, and there was the latest of Jim Spencerโ€™s books, โ€œA Turkey Runs Through Itโ€. As much as I have enjoyed all his previous books about wild turkeys, this one may be my favorite. He pours his heart and soul into this one.
In the book’s Foreword, written by friend and fellow outdoor scribe, Jim Casada, I found this paragraphโ€ฆโ€Spencer has sort of hinted that this might be his last book. Never mind that heโ€™s a bit long in the tooth and gray of hackle, I doubt thatโ€™s the case.โ€

Interested in getting your hands on a copy of Spencerโ€™s last (coughโ€ฆcough) book, โ€œA Turkey Runs Through Itโ€, write to him at Treble Hook Unlimited, P.O. Box 758, Calico Rock, AR 72519. I have all of his previous books and like all the others, I canโ€™t wait to be able to take a comfortable seat in sit in my recliner, cup of java at hand and this last book by the master of the printed word as well as a wild turkey junkie if I ever knew one.

If he says itโ€™s his last one, donโ€™t believe him. He lies. Frankly, Iโ€™m already looking forward to the next one, and the one after that.

โ€Jim Spencerโ€™s new book is available for sale now.โ€

Ponderings……

โ€œWe donโ€™t understand it, but your muffler is disintegrating from the inside.โ€

For once, the description of the noise my truck was making actually matched the noise it made for the service technician. Usually, when you take a vehicle to the shop, it immediately begins behaving like a child in front of company.

โ€œIt was doing it all the way over here,โ€ you say.

The mechanic starts the engine.

Silence.

The truck sits there looking innocent.

But Saturday it cooperated.

โ€œEventually,โ€ the service man explained, โ€œyour muffler will completely disintegrate, and your truck will become very loud.โ€

There are at least two ways you know you are getting old. The first is when the phrase โ€œyour truck will become very loudโ€ sounds more like a threat than a promise. When I was younger, a loud truck might have been impressive. Now I want my muffler to do exactly what its name implies: muffle. Loud and old do not mix wellโ€”whether we are talking about trucks, music, neckties, or people explaining their opinions at restaurants.

The second way you know you are old is Muzak. If you step into an elevator, a doctorโ€™s office, or a car dealership and realize the gentle instrumental music playing in the background is the same song your parents once yelled, โ€œTURN THAT GARBAGE DOWN!โ€ aboutโ€”you are old. Saturday, Muzak was playing while the service man described my disintegrating muffler.

There was no denying it.

I am old.

And suddenly I began imagining life with a loud truck. Would people hear me pulling into the church parking lot before they saw me? Could I lead a funeral procession in it? Would the Baptists think I had joined the youth group? Would the Catholics begin praying for me?

โ€œHow much will it cost to fix?โ€

It was going to be expensive. Apparently, disintegrating from the inside was not covered by the warranty. That phrase stayed with me. Disintegrating from the inside.

How is your muffler?

Because mufflers are not the only things that can look reasonably good on the outside while quietly falling apart where nobody can see.

People can do it too.

Discouragement is a kind of interior rust. You start with faith, hope, and love. But disappointment works on you. Frustration works on you. Anger works on you. Fear works on you. And if you do not continually center your life in Christ, the corrosion begins. Often the problem is not that God has abandoned us. The problem is that we have decided exactly how God ought to behave. We get a plan fixed in our heads, a result fixed in our hearts, and a timetable fixed on the calendar. Then, when God refuses to cooperate, we become discouraged. Slowly, quietly, something begins disintegrating on the inside.

And here is another thing I learned about mufflers: When they deteriorate on the inside, eventually they get loud on the outside. That may explain more about our world than we would like to admit. Public discourse has become a contest to see who can be loudest. Conversation has been replaced by competition. Listening has become a lost art. We no longer seem content to disagree with somebody; we must defeat them, embarrass them, label them, or shout over them. Maybe all that exterior noise is telling us something about our interior condition.

Maybe some of us need our spiritual mufflers repaired. There is a verse of Scripture that both comforts and confronts. Eight simple words that can aggravate people who are determined to stay loud and bring wonderful hope to those who know something inside them needs restoring:

โ€œBe still, and know that I am God.โ€ โ€”Psalm 46:10

Be still. Stop shouting. Stop insisting. Stop rehearsing everything that is wrong. Stop telling God how God ought to run the universe. Be still long enough to remember who God isโ€”and who you are. Maybe faith, hope, and love are not restored by becoming louder. Maybe they return when we become quiet enough to hear God again.

I get it, Lord.

Will you help me repair my muffler?

Death Notices

Patsy (Howell) Johns
January 6, 1934 – September 9, 2026

Jesus Pilots My Ship- The soul of man is like a ship that sails on seas of time. The storms may come, the winds may blow and rock this ship of mine, but the reason my ship will never sink and today still floats is His precious Word. Jesus pilots my boat! I wonโ€™t sail these stormy seas now unless Jesus leads the way. I wonโ€™t drift from shore so far that I canโ€™t hear what He has to say. I belong to a fleet that sails today on a glorious one-way trip that will land safely to sail no more, for Jesus pilots my ship. My soul pulled into port my stern torn apart and my bow badly crushed so that sinโ€™s waves flooded my heart. I had sailed so long on lifeโ€™s angry waves, my cargo fear and despair, but I called on His name, and He lifted the blame. Now He pilots my ship everywhere! -Patsyโ€™s Testimony

Representative Jack McFarland presented with the LSFA Legislator of the Year Award

(l-r) Mark Treadway, Jack McFarland

Representative Jack McFarland was the recipient of the Louisiana State Firemen’s Association (LSFA) Legislator of the Year award for 2026 on September 2nd. LSFA President Mark Treadway presented the award.

“As the 2025/2026 President of the LSFA, it was an honor to present this award to him,” said Treadway. “As Chair of Appropriations, he has truly been a friend to the parishes he represents and the Louisiana Fire Service!”

Representing District 13 in the Louisiana Legislature, which covers Bienville, Jackson, Ouachita, and Winn parishes, McFarland assumed office on January 11, 2016, and is now the Chairperson of the Appropriations Committee, Vice Chair of the Joint Legislative Budget Committee, and a member of the Joint Capital Outlay Committee. He has also served as Chairman of the Agriculture, Forestry, Aquaculture and Rural Development Committee, and as a member of the Labor and Industrial Relations Committee and Natural Resources and Environment Committee.

Schedule Change! JHHS Now Will Play At Delhi Charter On Thursday, September 10th

It has become the bane of high school football in North Louisiana. There simply aren’t enough officials for the number of games scheduled each Friday night, so games are being moved to Thursdays. Jonesboro-Hodge got caught up in the problem this week when the contest at Delhi Charter, originally scheduled for Friday, was moved to Thursday. Kick off is set for 7:00 pm

“It is what it is,” said JHHS head football coach Terrance Blankenship. “We would prefer to play on Friday as it gives us an extra day of practice, but we have to do what we have to do.”

The Tigers look to go to 2-0 on the season for the first time since 2020 and only the second time in Coach Blankenship’s career when they travel to Delhi to play the District 3-2A Gators, the second straight Class 2A school they will have played to open the year. Delhi Charter will be looking for their first win of the year, having lost 55-14 against Cedar Creek in Ruston in their season opener.

The contest will mark the 5th ever meeting between the schools in the series that began in 2009, with both teams having won two games. JHHS won the inaugural meeting 19-8 in 2009 and again last year, 42-27, while Delhi Charter won in 2010 and 2024 by 33-7 and 45-26. For those who believe in signs, both times JHHS beat Delhi Charter, the Tigers went on to have a winning season, while the two times the Tigers lost, they had a losing season.

Tiger game to be broadcast on 102.3 FM

For those who won’t be able to make the trip, you can catch the contest on the Roux102 radio station, found on your radio dial at 102.3 fm. The broadcast will begin at 6:30 pm with the Tigers pregame show that will feature the “Coaches Show” where JHHS head coach Terrance Blankenship will sit down with Ric Godley of Roux102 to talke about the upcoming contest and last week’s 14-8 victory over Lakeside to open the season.
