Tait Henderson got two hits, scored twice, stole two bases and had 3 RBI

Every batter in the lineup scored at least one run and all but one reached base at least once as Weston proved their #2 ranking in Division V among “non-select” schools by dominating Doyline 18-4 in the district 1B opener for both teams.

After spotting Doyline, now 7-7 on the year, to  3-0 lead, Weston came storming back to score two in the top of the fourth, five in the fifth and then put the game away with a season best for one inning, 11 runs in the top of the sixth. Weston improved to a very deceptive 10-9 record overall after playing one of the hardest schedules in the state preparing for district play.

Tait Henderson drove in three, scored twice, and stole two bases. His double, one of his two hits on the day, was the only extra base hit for the Wolves who touched up Doyline pitching for 10 hits, 11 walks and had three players get hit by pitches. Drew Browning got a team best three hits and scored twice with Cole Tolar getting two hits, scoring a run and knocking one in. Bryce Zehr scored twice and got on base three times via a hit and two walks and Braden Theriot walked four times and scored to runs. Cooper Delaney picked up the win.

Quitman’s Kaleigh King named MileSplit LA Performer of the Week

Kaleigh King (l), shown alongside QHS track coach Cindy Pardue (r), won five events in two meets.

By virtue of her three impressive victories in the Raising Cane’s Small School Track Classic in Many, and two more victories at the Castor Invitational, Kaleigh King has been named the MileSplit LA Performer of the Week.

The prestigious award marks the second time this year that QHS has had a track athlete honored with the designation, following Bryan Lay being named such during the indoor season.

With her victories in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles, King led the Lady Wolverines to five first place finishes, four seconds and four third place showings. Emayshia Wiley won the 100 meters to lay claim as fastest woman in the meet while A.J. Gray took the discus and QHS won the 4×200 relay event.

The QHS boys team also fared well with four gold and six bronze medal performances, including victories in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles by Nathan Harvey. Indoor state champion, Lay, won the pole vault to maintain his #1 ranking state ranking and Asher Shultz took first in the javelin.

Weston High won three events and came in second three times with Nathin Wages winning the long jump, Ronneica Kimble taking the 200 meters and the Lady Wolves racing to victory in the 4×100 relays.

Quitman High pounded out 11 hits and stole 13 bases to run past Choudrant 13-4 on Monday in their final contest before district 1B play begins on Thursday. It was an old fashioned team effort by the Wolverines as 8 of the 10 batters got hits and all but one of the 12 that played either scored at least one run or drove one in.

By beating Choudrant for the second time in two tries this season, The Wolverines, ranked #9 in the latest Division V poll among “non-select” schools, improved to 8-6 on the year. Choudrant fell to 5-11 this season.

Logan Ponder, who was the winning pitcher after limiting Choudrant to just three hits and one earned run, scored a team best three runs and got two hits on the day as did Braden Hobbs and Jake Potts. Kace West scored twice and got the only extra base hit, stroking a double.

What was most impressive was the base running by the Wolverines, who set a new season best by stealing 13 bases, led by three from Ponder and two each by Asher Shultz, Hobbs, West and Maddox Duck.

The sixth straight loss dropped JHHS to 1-11 on the year while Winnfield improved to 4-12 overall. JHHS will continue district play on Thursday, March 21st when they travel to Many.

JHHS falls to Mansfield in District 3-2A softball tilt

With 12 freshmen and sophomores, most playing varsity softball for the first time, making up second year coach Matthew Pearce’s 15 player roster, the youthful Lady Tigers have had their struggles this season. JHHS lost 27-10 to Mansfield on Friday to fall to 0-8 on the year and 0-3 in district 3-2A but there was a shining light amid the darkness of another defeat as JHHS played by far their best game of the year.

“I am very proud of the girls for continuing to battle the way they are doing,” said Pearce. “We knew it was going to be a tough year as most of our players are getting their first taste of varsity competition but they continue to work hard and we are getting better.”

The improvement and strides being made was obvious on Friday. Coming into the contest JHHS had scored just 11 runs all season but put 10 on the board in the first two innings.

“The girls have come a long way and it showed on Friday they are learning how to be selective at the plate,” continued Pearce. “We still have a way to go but I am pleased to see the progress they are making.”

Realte’ Atkins, Janiah Walker, Trinity Davis and Brooklyn Thomas all hit doubles to make up the four hits JHHS got in the contest that saw every player score, led by Alivia Anderson scoring twice.

The Lady Tigers will next be in action on Friday at Saline for a doubleheader that is scheduled to being at 4:00 pm.

Ponderings…..

There are two varieties of home improvement projects. The catalyst for the first variety of projects is the eye. When you have harvest gold or avocado green kitchen appliances, it is time for a little project. The way trends cycle, if you will hang on to those appliances another quarter century, they might be in vogue again. We might call those updates. It sounds less expensive to say, “I’m updating my home.”

The other variety of home improvement occurs when there is a major repair necessary. I am in the middle of that kind of home improvement. The house was constructed seventy-seven years ago. There are things that have “broken.” I am in the middle of a bathroom remodel. Seems the tub was not a cast iron variety. It was one of those “new-fangled” metal tubs of the 1940’s. The tub reached the end of its functional life. Corrosion, known as rust, surrounded the drain and the tub began to leak.

I was vetoed on the contractor, the other member of the committee voted to hire the friend of a friend. The work is “substantially completed.” All I can tell you is, I closed my eyes and listened to this guy talk and I swear I was listening to Larry the Cable guy. He was a nice man. He worked quickly. He did say, “Your house is not square.” Duh, it was built in 1947 and is pier and beam construction, no kidding it is not square.
He told me on Saturday that he would have to call friend number one to finish the drain because a part was missing.

The missing part was a ninety-degree turn. He described it as being PVC that was about six or seven inches long in total. He didn’t know where it was, but it was suddenly gone. He surmised that somehow friend number one had inadvertently picked it up. I shrugged my shoulders.

He finished his part of the job and left. That evening as I was getting the dogs settled, I found the missing piece of PVC. The dogs didn’t differentiate between some of their bones and this missing piece of pipe. There it was in the middle of my bed. The dogs had buried it under a throw pillow. I’m wondering if this isn’t in the same broad category of “my dog ate my homework.”

The Psalmist told us, “Fret not.” I wonder if the Psalmist had dogs that carried off PVC in the middle of a construction project. I know the Psalmist faced much more. Is your faith in Christ, such that you can face every adventure, situation, exchange, conversation, challenge, or detour with the attitude of “fret not?”

Prep Baseball Recap!

It was de-ja-vu all over again for the three Jackson Parish high school baseball teams.  Like earlier in the week when Weston, Quitman and Jonesboro-Hodge all lost games on Monday, and only Weston won on Tuesday, the same thing happened on Thursday and Saturday. As a result, the three parish teams ended the week with a combined 2-11 record in the games played.

The good news is that despite the tough week, the power rankings of each weren’t affected that much. Weston, now at 9-9 on the year, continued to claim the highest rating of Jackson Parish teams, sitting at #3 in Division V among “non-select” schools while Quitman and their 7-6 record is at #8. Both carry high rankings due to the rough gauntlet of games that Weston head coach Joey Kemp and Quitman skipper Joe Lockhart scheduled for their teams. Of the 31 combined games that the two district 1B squads have played 26 have been against teams from higher classifications.

Both squads competed in the Northwood Tournament this Thursday and Saturday with Weston losing to Class 4A Minden 9-6 and Quitman falling to Class A St. Frederick’s of Monroe by a 4-3 margin in opening games. On Saturday, Quitman fell to Class 3A Evangel 7-4 while Weston salvaged the weekend by beating tourney host, Class 4A Northwood -Shreveport 10-8 in a thrilling finish. The Tigers of Jonesboro-Hodge, now under the direction of new head coach Kris Cash, are at #35 in Division IV with a 1-10 record after losing to Saline 13-3 on Thursday and dropping a double header to Dodson on Saturday by 9-8 and 23-3 scores.

Saturday, March 16th Games:

Weston 10 Northwood-Shreveport 8: With the scored tied at 5-5 heading into the final inning, Weston exploded for five runs in the top of the 7th inning and then stranded the tying runners on base to hold on for the stirring victory over the 4th ranked team in Division 1 among “select” schools. The decisive inning began with Drew Browning and Colton Blundell sandwiching singles around a fielder choice groundout on a bunt by Braden Theriot that saw Browning out at second base. Cooper Delaney then reached on an error that scored Theriot followed by a single by Tait Henderson that scored Blundell and gave Weston a 7-5 advantage. Jacob Gill then drew a walk and JTy Henderson reached on the second error of the inning to score Delaney. Cole Tolar then got hit by a pitch that forced Tait Henderson in setting up a single by Drew Browning, who led Weston with 3 hits on the day, that plated Gill with the fifth run of the inning. Northwood made a rally on the strength of having two batters get hit by a pitch and a pair of errors to draw to within 10-8 with runners on second and third base but Sawyer Watkins coaxed a ground ball to second to end the threat and give Weston the win. Earlier on, Northwood took a 4-0 lead after two innnings of play but Weston tied the score in one swing of the bat, a grand slam homerun by Braden Theriot that scored Browning and Tolar who had singled and Bryce Zehr who got on base thanks to one of the five errors Northwood made on the day.

Evangel 7 Quitman 4: The Wolverines lost their fourth straight game when Evangel of Shreveport scored three runs in the top of the 7th inning to break a 4-4 deadlock in Quitman’s final game of the Northwood tournament. The Wolverines took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning using a keen eye at the plate and timely hitting. Kace West and Ian Tilley opened the frame with a walk and a single followed by Braden Hobbs drawing another walk of the inning to load the bases. Pete Simonelli then singled to drive in the first run of the game and John Raegan Hasley coaxed the third base on balls of the inning to get an RBI. Hudson Pullig then stroked a single to left field to score Hobbs. Riley Duck led Quitman with three hits.

Game two was no contest as Dodson used seven Tiger errors and 21 base on balls, including 8 batters who got hit by a pitch to score at least four runs in four of the five innings played to win going away. Dodson had taken a 7-1 lead after 4 innings in game one but the Tigers clawed back with four in the bottom of the fifth inning and another in the bottom of the sixth to draw to within one before Dodson scored two in the top of the 7th to extend the lead to three runs. Logan Smith and Ulloa led JH with two hits each with Smith driving in three runs and Duke Tew scoring two. JHHS stole a season best 11 bases with Ulloa swiping three and both Trey Trosclair and Marquis Baker taking two each.

Saline 13 JHHS 3: The home standing Bobcats spotted JHHS to a 3-0 lead then came storming back to score 12 runs in the bottom of the third, including plating five before the first out was made to win going away to improve to 6-1 on the season. The big inning was fueled by five hits, including a triple by Braden Robinson, five free passes by Tiger pitching and 3 errors. JHHS took a 1-0 lead to open the game when Trey Trosclair singled on the first pitch of the game, went to second when Logan Smith got hit by a pitch and scored on an error off a ball hit by Marquis Baker. The Tigers scored two more the next at bat. Landon Boston led off with a walk, went to second on a passed ball, stole third and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Dakota Knox who reached base when Saline attempted the play at the plate.  Two passed balls put Knox on third where Duke Tew hit a ground out that scored the run. Bryce Davis also hit a triple for the Bobcats and scored two runs for with Gunner Fontenot, Tony Smith and Bray Corley also scoring twice.

Weston took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second on the strength of singles by Tait Henderson, Jacob Gill and Bryce Zehr and both Colton Blundell and Cole Tolar reaching on errors. Minden rallied to score six runs in the bottom of the fourth setting up the Wolves sixth inning where Cole Tolar’s single scored Jacob Gill and Drew Williams, pinch running for Tolar, scored on a wild pitch to knot the score at 6-6, setting up the fateful bottom of the frame. Pete Simonelli and John Raegan Hasley hit back to back singles to get final frame started. Then with two outs, the Duck boys, Maddox and Riley both hit RBI singles and Kace West walked to put Wolverines on every base which is where they were left after St. Frederick pitching coaxed a ground out to end the game. John Raegan Hasley singled and scored on a passed ball  to narrow the gap to 4-1 in the fifth inning.

“Tourney Time” comes once again for Quitman and Weston softball teams

Local softball teams from Quitman and Weston High School took to the “tournament trail” once again this past weekend to mixed results. The Lady Wolverines of Quitman, still ranked #1 in Division V among “non-select” schools, headed south for the third time over the last five weekends to play in the prestigious Sulphur tournament. There they split a pair of games to bring their record to a sterling 17-3 mark. Weston High didn’t travel as far but instead headed west to take part in the Stanley Tournament where they won one of the three games that dropped their overall record to 5-13 and in 35th place in the Division V rankings.

Live Oak 7 Quitman 2: It always happens every season for every team in every sport that once in a while you simply have a “clunker” of a game. The opener of the Sulphur Tournament against Class 5A Live Oak was that for the Lady Wolverines. Uncharacteristically, Quitman made a season high six errors and the Lady Wolverines failed to get an extra base hit for the first time all year as Cali Deal was the unfortunate loser, despite striking out nine and giving up only two earned runs. Karly Huckaby, who had 14 RBI in 36 games last season, continued her incredible outbreak year for driving runs in by plating two more to give her a team leading 35 in just 20 games to date. Deal, Hallie Kate Pullig and Anna Leach also got hits for Quitman. Brenna Lamkin and Maggie Guyotte scored the runs.

Quitman 5 Brusly 3: The Lady Wolverines redeemed themselves in grand fashion in game two of the tourney as they bested Brusly, in the battle between the top ranked school in Division V and the 2nd ranked team in Division II among “non-select” schools. After spotting Brusly to a 1-0 lead, Quitman came storming back to score 3 in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth to take the win. Maggie Guyotte got the rally started with a double before giving way to pinch runner Taylor Harvey who scored after Cali Deal and Hallie Kate Pullig had back to back bunt singles. When Kinsley Ponder laid down a third straight bunt single, Deal scored as did Pullig on Quitman’s fourth straight bunt attempt, this one that was ruled an error off the bat of Karly Huckaby. A wild play in the third inning accounted for Quitman’s other two runs. Briley Bowers opened the frame by drawing a walk and went to second on Madison Chaplin’s single. After Guyotte hit into a fielders choice that forced Chaplin at second, and then advanced to second on what was ruled as defensive indifference, Deal hit a grounder to left field setting off a wild sequence of events. First, Guyotte got gunned down trying to score on the hit followed but an error by the catcher who threw the ball away allowed Bowers and Deal to score. Guyotte was outstanding on the mound as well, limiting the high powered Brusly attack that was averaging 7. 2 runs per game coming in to just two earned runs in 4.2 innings of work to earn the win. Deal pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing just one unearned run to gain a save.

Stanley 15 Weston 0: Tournament host Stanley scored at will to take the three inning, “mercy rule” victory. Weston pitching gave up 8 hits and 9 walks but it was the misfortune of four untimely errors made by the Lady Wolves defense that led to 11 unearned runs. Molly Beaubouef got two of Weston’s three hits with Jacie Ledford collecting the other one and both Carlynn Waters and Anslee Aldy getting walks.

Choudrant 17 Weston 3: The Lady Wolves scored three in the top of the first inning but Choudrant rallied to plate six in their half of the frame and added eight more in the bottom of the second to put the game away. Molly Beaubouef and Carlyn Waters hit back to back singles to open the game.  Keeley Davis, who was pinch running for Beaubouef stole third and Waters got thrown out trying to take second base before Davynee Bearden drew a walk. That set up a three run “jack” by Jacie Ledford, her team leading 6th home run of the year. Beaubouef once again led Weston in hits with two and Carly Jo Griffin added a double. Jaylin Williams also got a hit for the Lady Wolves.

Molly Beaubeouf got two hits for the third game in a row, the same number of hits collected by Davynee Bearden and Anslee Aldy. Raelynn Shell, Jaylin Williams, Keeley Davis and B Cuthrell also all added a hit as for the first time all year, every batter in the lineup connected for at least one hit. Aldy got the win after striking out a career high ten batters and giving up just three hits. Weston also stole 10 bases in the contest led by three from Griffin and two each by Waters and Ledford.
