Rachel Shively for Jackson Parish Clerk of Court

Understanding the role of Clerk of Court is the foundation of being an effective leader in that position. You cannot lead what you do not understand. And you cannot serve the public effectively without fully understanding the responsibility that comes with it.

The Clerk of Court is not an administrative title—it is a public office that keeps the entire court system functioning. It involves managing legal records, overseeing filings, maintaining accuracy in conveyances and mortgages, ensuring proper courtroom documentation and processes, and serving the public with fairness and efficiency.

If someone tells you “you can learn it on the job,” they are underestimating how complex and high-stakes this role really is. The Clerk of Court is not a figurehead—it is a technical, legal, and leadership position all in one.

A good Clerk of Court must understand that this role directly impacts justice, property rights, and public trust. There is no room for guesswork. Every document matters. Every filing matters. Every process matters.

Strong leadership in this office means respecting the court process and ensuring that staff are trained, competent, and consistent in how they serve the public. It also means making sure the office runs with transparency, accuracy, and accountability at all times.

Leadership is not just about stepping up—anyone can do that. It is about knowing what you are stepping into. It takes knowledge, preparation, and real experience to guide others in the right direction.

Leadership is not a title—it is responsibility, knowledge, and accountability in action. If you do not understand the system, the work, or the people you serve, then you are not leading—you are just occupying space.

A great Clerk of Court is not defined by a title—but by KNOWLEDGE of the role, EXPERIENCE in the role, RESPECT for the judicial system, and COMMITMENT to doing the job right every single day.

I have 10 years of experience working in the Clerk’s Office and 24 years of experience as a legal assistant.

The simple facts are this:
I understand the role and responsibility of the Clerk of Court.
I do not need to be trained to perform this role.
I have the maturity to perform this role well.
I have the utmost respect for the court system and the citizens of this parish and understand why that is so important.

I am proud to stand on my prior work experience and have been transparent with the citizens of Jackson Parish about my work history from the beginning. People know I have not just worked at random jobs. I have spent the past 34 years preparing for this role, and I am confident I can continue to effectively serve you as your Clerk of Court.

Bottom line: if you do not understand what you are leading, you cannot properly lead it—no matter the title.

If you are going to lead, know the job. Know the responsibility. And be ready to carry it.

Jackson Parish deserves a Clerk of Court who not only understands the role and responsibility but can also be the leader this parish needs. I am ready on day one.

Vote #52 RACHEL SHIVELY on May 16th to continue leading your Clerk’s Office.

Funeral services celebrating the life of Sonda Womack, 83, of Chatham, Louisiana, will be held at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at Chatham Community Methodist Church with Rev. Lynn Malone, Rev. Lala Ball, and Rev. Russell Rhodes officiating. Interment will follow immediately after at Chatham Cemetery, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, West Monroe.

Sonda Ann Roberts Womack, age 83, of Chatham, Louisiana, passed away on April 30, 2026, in Chatham, surrounded by her three sons and their wives.

She was born on November 27, 1942, in Chatham, Louisiana, to W. R. and Aline Johnson Roberts, the seventh of ten children.

Sonda devoted her life in service to her Lord, her family, and her community. She faithfully served the Lord through her gift of music, playing the piano and organ for various congregations over a span of 73 years. She also served her community as Postmaster of the Chatham Post Office for over 25 years and gave her time generously to the Crossroads Mission in Chatham.

At home, she expressed that same devotion in quieter but no less meaningful ways, caring for her family and creating a place where they were always welcome.

She was preceded in death by her parents; all nine of her siblings; her husband, Tommy L. Womack; one great-grandson, Kobyn Malone; and the father of her three sons, Terry Malone.

She is survived by her three sons and two step-daughters: Ben Malone and wife Kellie of Madisonville, Louisiana; Lynn Malone and wife Vanessa of Minden, Louisiana; and Shawn Malone and wife Toni of Chatham, Louisiana. Pullig Powers Quitman into Class B Softball Finals

All Smiles!
The Lady Wolverines were grinning from ear to ear following their 5-2 Class B semi-final victory over Hicks

There is no place like home – away from home! That is the sentiment that Quitman High School enjoys about playing at the Frasch Softball Complex in Sulphur, LA, site of the annual LHSAA state softball tournament, where the Lady Wolverines have won five straight games over the past three years, including the 5-2 semi-final victory over Hicks on Saturday.

With their season-best 11th win in a row, Quitman, seeded #2 in the 20-team Class B bracket, improved to 24-9 on the year and into their fourth consecutive finals in search of their third straight Class B championship.

Class B State Finals
Sunday, May 3
3:00 pm
#2 Quitman (24-9) vs #4 Anacoco (15-12)

The Lady Wolverines will play Anacoco for the Class B championship at 3:00 pm on Sunday, May 3rd, who despite entering the playoffs with a pedestrian 12-12 record, beat #20 Choudrant 5-1, #5 Zwolle 7-1 and upset top-ranked Stanley 9-6 in the semi-finals to advance to the finals matchup.

If you describe the Frasch Complex as Quitman’s home-away-from-home, then you must recognize Hallie Kate Pullig as “matron of the manor”. The sophomore sensation, who has earned the undeniable reputation of being at her best the bigger the game, once again showcased her uncanny ability by clubbing a triple and a double to knock in Quitman’s first three runs and crossed home plate for the fourth in what turned out to be the pivotal bottom of the fifth inning that saw the Lady Wolverines go up 5-0 by plating four runs in the frame.

In five games at the state tournament, Pullig has 9 hits in 17 at-bats, for a gaudy .527 batting average. Six of the hits are for extra bases, made up three triples and three doubles, with the 2024 championship game MVP as an 8th grader accounting for 13 RBI and 3 runs scored.

Another who has traditionally stepped up for the Lady Wolverines is Maggie Guyotte, who once again exhibited her incredible offensive prowess but on Saturday added another dimension to her already legendary resume.

Recognized as the state’s all-time leader in base hits and RBI’s and second-best ever in home runs, Guyotte stroked a single and scored two runs, including the first tally of the game after getting hit by a pitch and scoring on Pullig’s triple to give Quitman a first inning 1-0 lead.

On Saturday, though, it was her prowess on the mound that was a catalyst for the victory.

To set the stage, starting and winning pitcher, Brenna Lamkin, had cruised through the first four innings, allowing only a first-inning double to Hick’s all-stater Courtlyn Dousay. In the top of the fifth inning, trouble set in as Hicks loaded the bases with no outs as two batters reached base after getting hit by a pitch, and Dousay was intentionally walked.

Quitman head coach Justin Dodson then summoned Guyotte to the mound. A key member of the pitching staff, who has a tremendous 45-12 record over her six-year career, and is 7-1 this season, the relief appearance was the first time Guyotte had ever pitched in a state tournament game.

Nursing the slim 1-0 lead, tension built to a fever pitch as the first three pitches were balls, but showing tremendous fortitude, Guyotte calmly threw three straight strikes to record the first out of the inning and then slammed the door shut on the rally attempt by striking out the next batter and coaxing a lineout to leave the bases loaded and leave Quitman unscathed.

Buoyed by escaping the scary situation with the lead still intact, the Lady Wolverines put the game away in the bottom half of the inning when Anna Leach first reached on a one-out error, the 4th of the game committed by the Hicks infield. Guyotte followed with a single, and Pullig brought both in with a double to center field to increase Quitman’s lead to 3-0. Brenna Lamkin and Briley Bowers, back from a horrifying wreck earlier in the week that threatened to end her season, kept the inning going with a two-out single and double, respectively, that gave Quitman an insurmountable 5-0 lead. Hicks would score twice in the top of the seventh for the final margin.

Election 2026: Louisiana U. S. House of Representatives Races Suspended

Per a new release issued by the Louisiana Secretary of State, Nancy Landry, on Thursday, April 30th, the races for the Louisiana U.S. House of Representatives have been suspended.

The voting for all other ballot items on the May 16th election ballot will proceed as scheduled, with early voting beginning on May 2nd and running until May 9th.

“Our office will post notices at each of the early voting sites to alert the public of this change,” stated Landry. “While the U.S. House races will remain on voters’ ballots, any votes cast in those races will not be counted.”

On Thursday, April 29th, the United States Supreme Court ruled that Louisiana’s current U.S. House District maps were unconstitutional gerrymanders and that their use in the upcoming Congressional elections would violate the law.

“Pursuant to 18:401.1(B), I have certified the emergency in light of the Supreme Court ruling,” stated Landry. “This is a mandatory step prior to the Governor issuing an executive order suspending the upcoming Louisiana U.S. House races.”

Class B Baseball Playoffs: Weston Advances, Quitman Eliminated

Going, Going, GONE!
Drew Browning of Weston HIgh watches his first inning two run homerun sail out of the ballpark

Weston and Quitman both were excited about having a home-field advantage in the Regional round of the Class B state baseball playoffs, but Mother Nature had different plans. Due to the deluge that delayed the scheduled contests for both Jackson Parish schools, both were also forced to play their games at alternate locations.

With the field on the WHS campus named after legendary Weston coach Mike Staples, unplayable, the 4th-seeded Wolves moved their game against #13 Anacoco, which was played on Saturday, to their old stomping grounds at the Jackson Parish Recreation Department Sports Complex.

Quitman, the #7 seed, wasn’t so fortunate. With their school field also unplayable, the Wolverines completely lost their home-field advantage, having to play #10 seed Stanley at the Ruston Parks and Recreation Complex on Ruston High School’s field on Thursday.

The end result was Weston beat Anacoco 4-3 to advance to the Class B Quarterfinals, where they will play #5 seed Holden, who continued their playoff journey by blanking #12 Oak Hill. No date and time for the game had been set as of press time early Sunday morning. For Quitman, seeded #7 in the 20-team bracket, the postseason came to an end after the Wolverines fell to #10 Stanley 8-4, ending the locals’ season with a 17-16 record.

Weston 4 Anacoco 3: Drew Browning smashed a home run and a double in the first two innings to plate 3 runs that helped Weston stay even with upstart Anacoco and Ty Henderson first slammed the door on any upset ideas by hurling shut out ball in relief and then sent Anacoco packing with a clutch sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 6th inning that scored Kolt Keiffer with the winning run.

Also coming up big for the Wolves was first-year varsity starter Dawson Griffin, who went 3/3 and scored a run in the bottom of the second that tied the game at 3 apiece after Anacoco had rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead. Jase Borders was also instrumental in the victory by getting two hits in two official at-bats and reaching base after getting hit by a pitch to score ahead of Browning’s 5th home run of the season.

Following the early inning fireworks by both offenses, Henderson came on in relief to limit Anacoco to just two singles the rest of the way, ending with 5.2 innings pitched of no-run ball to earn the victory.

The deciding run came in the bottom of the 6th inning when Keiffer led off by getting plunked, advanced to second on a perfect sacrifice bunt by Bryce Tolar, went to third on Griffin’s third hit of the game, and scampered home on Henderson’s fly out to center field.

Stanley 8 Quitman 4: Hudson Pullig smashed a double followed by a Maddox Duck triple in the bottom of the 7th inning, but the two runs scored by Quitman were not enough to offset the six-run deficit.

Quitman out-hit Stanley 8-2, but 9 walks given up by Wolverine pitching in the fourth and fifth innings led to disaster as Stanley capitalized on the free passes to score 8 runs. Kace West and Tucker Newton had two hits apiece, and both Cail King and Asher Rhodes got hits to go along with the late extra-base hits by Pullig and Duck.

Jonesboro Water System Showing Significant Improvement

Jonesboro, Louisiana — On Friday, May 1st, the Town of Jonesboro announced measurable and meaningful progress in the performance of its municipal water system, reflecting a sustained commitment to operational improvement, financial stability, and long-term infrastructure investment.

Recent water system grading reports from the Louisiana Department of Health show that Jonesboro’s overall score has improved from 42% in 2022 to 62% in 2025, representing a 20-point increase over four years.

This progress marks a transition from a failing classification to a passing grade, demonstrating forward momentum and tangible results.

“This improvement is not by chance—it is the result of intentional leadership, strategic decision-making, and a commitment to doing what is necessary to move our town forward,” said Mayor J. Spike Harris. “We have made real progress, and while there is still work to be done, we are clearly moving in the right direction.”

The Town’s progress is driven by key advancements in several areas:

Financial Sustainability: Strengthened through improved rate structures and responsible fiscal management, positioning the system for long-term viability
Customer Satisfaction: A significant reduction in verified water-related complaints, reflecting improved service delivery and responsiveness
Operational Stability: Continued focus on consistent operations and maintenance practices

While the progress is notable, Town leadership acknowledges that challenges remain. The reports continue to identify infrastructure deficiencies and regulatory requirements as the primary factors limiting overall system performance.

“These challenges did not occur overnight, and they will not be resolved overnight,” Mayor Harris stated. “They are the result of aging infrastructure and years of deferred investment. However, we now have a clear path forward and a strategy in place to address them.”

As part of its continued commitment to improvement, the Town of Jonesboro is actively focused on:

Advancing critical infrastructure upgrades, including water system improvements and expansion projects

Strengthening regulatory compliance and operational standards

Ensuring financial alignment to support ongoing maintenance and future capital investments

“Our focus is not simply on improving a score,” Harris added. “Our focus is on building a water system that is reliable, sustainable, and capable of meeting the needs of our citizens today and for generations to come.”

Town officials emphasize that the progress achieved to date represents an important step forward, but continued investment and strategic planning will be essential to sustaining momentum.

“We are committed to transparency, accountability, and results,” said Harris. “This is about delivering real improvements to our community, and we will continue to move forward with purpose and determination.”

Hudson Pullig to sign with South Arkansas Community College

Hudson Pullig will continue his baseball career after graduating from Quitman High School (QHS) at South Arkansas Community College in El Dorado, AR. The official signing of papers will take place at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, May 5th, in the Quitman High School gymnasium.

SouthArk, as the school is commonly referred to, is a Division II member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and competes in the Region 2 East Division. The Stars continue to make a concerted effort to bring some of north Louisiana’s best talent to campus, having already signed fellow Jackson Parish baseball player Drew Browning of Weston High School earlier this spring.

Additional Jackson Parish residents who have played at SouthArk over the past couple of years are Ty Simonelli, a 2022 QHS graduate, and Emma Kate McBride, a 2023 Weston High School graduate.

A Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) and Louisiana Baseball Coaches Association (LBCA) Class B first-team selection in 2024 and 2025, the son of Brent and Juliann Pullig, helped Quitman earn a Class B regional berth after batting .319 with 35 runs scored and 25 runs batted in.

Colton Powell of Quitman High School makes local high school tennis history

Colton Powell – Quitman High School

The LHSAA Division IV state tennis tournament was held at Forsythe Park in Monroe, LA, on April 27th, and with it, local sports history was made.

When Colton Powell of Quitman High School stepped on the court for his opening round singles match, he became the first ever in Jackson Parish history to compete in a state tennis tournament match as an 8th grader.

Powell fell to Collin Tullis of First Baptist Christian 6-3, 6-0, but it didn’t put a damper on his history-making season, where he won 6 of the 9 matches he competed in during the regular season that included taking victories over competitors from three schools from higher classifications, including Class 5A West Ouachita.

Libby Morgan in Division II State Doubles

Jackson Parish has another resident who competed in the LHSAA state tennis tournament, Libby Morgan, who, along with doubles partner Bess Black, reached the quarterfinals of the Division II tournament for Ruston High School. The daughter of Jackson Parish Hospital CEO John Morgan and his wife, Tracey, who is a speech pathologist at Hillcrest Elementary in Ruston, earned the state tournament by finishing as a finalist in the Division II regionals, held in Monroe.

After winning their first-round match, 6-1, 6-0 against Brown and Bing of St. Scholastica, the duo dispatched Dyson and Thomas of St. Thomas More 6-3, 6-1 to earn the quarterfinal matchup against the #1-ranked doubles team of Capello and Haydel of Vandebilt Catholic, falling 7-6, 6-2 to end their season with a stellar 24-4 record.

Maggie Guyotte of Quitman High School named “Aaron’s Ace”

Aaron’s Ace!
Maggie Guyotte – Quitman High School

Maggie Guyotte has received many accolades during her stellar career as a Quitman High School softball player. All-District, All-State, Player of the Week, etc…. The list is long and well-deserving, as it should be for the state of Louisiana’s all-time hit and RBI leader, who ranks second all-time in career home runs.

Prior to Quitman’s LHSAA Class B regional round playoff game against Pikin, on April 20th, the Louisiana Tech University signee received another award, one that has been coveted by athletes from northeast Louisiana for the past 25 years – the “Aaron’s Ace” Award.

Presented by KNOE TV 8 Sports Director and show host Aaron Dietrich, Maggie received the “Aaron’s Ace” special shirt, which holds great meaning among athletes from across the region.

“It’s pretty awesome,” said Guyotte. “I wasn’t expecting this.”

The timing couldn’t have been better as Guyotte turned in one of her better performances of the year in leading Quitman to a 10-0 victory by smashing two home runs and driving in five runs to up her season home run and RBI totals to 16 and 52, respectively, both among the leaders in the state this year.

Glynn Harris Outdoors and Fishing Report

Things Looking Up For Fishery at Parish Park Lake

Lincoln Parish Park was born from the dream of a special man, the late Fredrick Hoogland. One day, in the late 1970s, he was inspired by something he saw. I interviewed him 20 years or so ago and wrote an article on his discovery.

“When I stepped up on a bluff that spring day and saw what lay before me, I’m sure if somebody had heard me, they’d have thought I was an evangelist praising the Lord. I’ve never had an experience quite like that and I was overcome with emotion, realizing that my prayers had been answered. After walking thousands of acres around Ruston for the better part of three years, I realized that God had led me to the right spot and it was just about more than I could handle. There was no doubt in my mind that here was the site that would ultimately become the park I’d dreamed about since high school,” Hoogland told me when I interviewed him.

Hoogland’s efforts resulted in the park being officially dedicated in March 1990, consisting of miles of bike trails, walking paths, camping and picnic areas and a lake.

Located just off Highway 33 north of Ruston, this was an area I not only enjoyed but came to love and realize that this “Oasis in the Pines” was a welcomed and blessed addition to Lincoln Parish and surrounding areas.

One of the things about the park that I enjoyed was taking my grandchildren to the pond to let them swim and fish. The only thing about the fishing was they could catch three inch bream until they tired but there were very few large enough to eat.

That, however, is on the verge of changing as the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries got involved in trying to improve the fishery on the pond. Jeff Sibley, Fisheries Biologist, is overseeing a program to do just that.

“Lincoln Parish doesn’t have a state sponsored public lake so we decided to get involved. The pond at the park at 24 acres is either a big pond or a small lake and we felt we could take some actions that would improve fishing there,” said Sibley.

“From the sampling we did, we found the lake has a big population of small 10-12 inch bass and lots of small bream with the exception of scattered schools of big bream. We added lime and fertilizer to the lake to increase the population of plankton to result in a better forage base. We also used electro-fishing to reduce the number of small bass because things were badly out of balance,” he added.

With no predators in the lake, such as big flathead catfish and gar, this puts anglers as the top end predator, according to Sibley.

“Things are already starting to look up,” Sibley said, “and by this fall, things should really start to look different on the lake. Bream are beginning to reproduce like we wanted and hopefully we’ll see the numbers of small bass reduced.”

He suggested that anglers should go out now with a small spinner and easily catch a limit of 10-12 inch bass, fish they should take home and not return to the lake. Of course, daily limits must also be followed.

Next year when my grandchildren come for a visit, here’s hoping they’ll be able to catch enough keeper bream for a fish fry. A big thank you is in order for Jeff Sibley and his team for doing something special for the park that Fredrick Hoogland would be so proud of.

Spiritual Earwax: A Cautionary Tale for the Hard of Hearing Soul

If you’ve ever had so much earwax that you started wondering whether your head was secretly manufacturing candles for a side hustle, then friend, you are in good company. Recently I found myself in that exact predicament—both ears so clogged that even Granny’s Home Remedy (which usually involves olive oil, prayer, and a level of confidence not supported by medical science) didn’t make a dent. My hearing was so bad I kept asking people to repeat themselves, and they kept repeating themselves louder, and eventually everyone was shouting like we were reenacting the Battle of Jericho.

Finally, I surrendered and went to an ENT. The procedure was swift, humbling, and—let’s be honest—deeply satisfying. Suddenly the world was crisp again. Birds chirped. Paper rustled. I could hear my own footsteps.

But as I walked out of the office, ears squeaky clean and ego slightly bruised, I wondered: if our physical ears can get that stopped up, what about our spiritual ones?

Jesus once said, “People have eyes but do not see, and ears but do not hear.” I used to think He was being poetic. Now I think He may have been talking about spiritual cerumen—holy earwax, if you will.

Earwax doesn’t show up all at once. It builds slowly, quietly, sneakily—like dust bunnies or church committee meetings. One day you’re hearing fine, and the next you’re saying “Huh?” so often people think it’s your new spiritual gift.

Spiritual wax works the same way.

• A little pride here.
• A little resentment there.
• A dash of busyness, a sprinkle of distraction, a generous scoop of “I’ll pray later.”

Before long, the still, small voice of God sounds like it’s coming from the bottom of a well. And just like physical wax, spiritual wax is rarely solved by home remedies. We try:

• The Cotton Swab Method: “I’ll fix this myself.”
• The Essential Oil Method: “I bought something expensive; surely that counts as spiritual growth.”
• The Denial Method: “I’m fine. Everyone else is mumbling.”

But none of these clear the blockage. They just push it deeper.

After my ENT adventure, I learned that the best ear hygiene is simple: keep things clear, avoid sticking junk in there, and let the ear do what it was designed to do.

Spiritually, the same principles apply.

1. Stop sticking things in your ears.
You know the things—noise, hurry, outrage, comparison, doom scrolling, and the occasional YouTube prophet who predicted the end of the world last Tuesday. None of these help you hear God.

2. Let the Spirit do the cleaning.
Just as the ear naturally moves wax outward, the Holy Spirit gently brings our blockages to the surface—if we give Him space. Prayer, silence, Scripture, worship: these are the warm drops that soften the buildup.

3. Get professional help when needed.
Sometimes the blockage is too deep for DIY spirituality. That’s when we need pastors, counselors, trusted friends, or a good old-fashioned come-to-Jesus moment.

When the ENT finished, I was amazed at how loud the world was. I had forgotten what clarity sounded like.

When God clears our spiritual ears, the same thing happens. Suddenly Scripture speaks. Prayer feels alive. Worship vibrates in the bones. Conviction is gentle but unmistakable. And the voice of God—steady, loving, persistent—sounds like it’s been waiting patiently the whole time.

Maybe Jesus wasn’t scolding when He said people had ears but didn’t hear. Maybe He was diagnosing. Maybe He was inviting us to the Great Physician’s office for a little spiritual irrigation. And who knows—maybe when our ears are finally clear, we’ll hear Him say, “Welcome back. I’ve been talking to you this whole time.”
