Quitman sweeps Choudrant in pre-season varsity basketball tune-ups

Quitman High School christened the upcoming 2023-24 LHSAA basketball season in fine style on Tuesday by sweeping Choudrant in the first of their pre-season tuneups. Both jumped out to early leads and coasted home with the girls winning 48-24 and boys taking a 63-54 victory in the contest where the final score was no indication of how dominant the Wolverines were.

Quitman 48 Choudrant 24 (girls): Quitman scored the first eight points and then after Choudrant hit a three pointer ran off another seven to take a 15-3 lead. Then it got worse. With the score 22-10 the Lady Wolverines pasted Choudrant with a 22-2 run to put the game away. Cali Deal led the way with 18 points followed by Jaleigh Burns with 10. Taylor Borland scored five, A.J. Gray had four and Emma Walker, Morgan Cheatwood and Anna Leach all had three each. Taylor Harvey tallied two and Lanee Cheatwood hit a free throw to round out the scoring. QHS had 17 steals in the contest with Leach, Deal and Morgan Cheatwood all getting four swipes each. 

Quitman 63 Choudrant 54 (boys) Noah Leach went off for 14 of his game high 23 points in the first quarter to help pace the Wolverines to a 33-11 lead that ballooned to a 49-25 halftime advantage. Quitman scorched the nets for an outstanding 17 of 32 two point shots and hit 9 of 21 three pointers. Logan Ponder also had a big night scoring 17 points, grabbing 6 boards and making 8 steals. Gavin Caskey scored eight, Eli Walker seven, Braydon Smith six and Riley Duck two for the Wolverines
