Marvin Davis named new head boys basketball coach at Airline High School

He was one of the fortunate ones. No,  Marvin Davis didn’t grow up with the proverbial “silver spoon” but he and his sister were rich beyond belief. Being rich has nothing to do with money but being blessed.

Growing up as the son of Jimmie Davis is certainly one of the best blessings that could be bestowed on a person. It was a truly blessing in itself just to know the man much less be his son.

For clarification purposes we are not talking about the “singing governor” who grew up on Peckerwood Hill just outside of Quitman and the man who grew to be a legend nationwide for creating the song You Are My Sunshine

The Jimmie Davis that is being referred to is the beloved coach at Jonesboro-Hodge and Jackson Parish resident who went to be with the Lord in 2018. There are many ways to describe him. Words such as educator, comforter, leader, trustworthy, and friend are just a few.  More so, he was a mentor and life tutor to countless young boys and girls, always strengthening the faith of those he came across and providing inspirational words that instilled confidence.

Marvin Davis knew even when he was a young lad that he wanted to be a coach like his father was. He saw the effect his father had through his being a tremendous inspirational and spiritual leader to young girls and boys.

In an interview back in 2022 with the Jackson Parish Journal when he was hired as boys head basketball coach at Northwood High School Marvin how instrumental his father was in him wanting to be a coach.

“He was my mentor and inspiration to get involved in coaching and working with all children regardless of their background,” Davis said.

After graduating from Quitman High School in 1996 and getting his degree from Louisiana Tech, Davis was hired as an assistant girls basketball and football coach at Lakeside High in Sibley. One year later, he became the head coach of the girls program for five years while still maintaining his position with the football team.

In 2011, he moved to Mansfield High School to become an assistant girls basketball, football, and track coach for three years before once again becoming a head coach, leading the Wolverine boys basketball program for six seasons. In 2020, he joined the Airline High School boys basketball staff before becoming the Northwood High School head boys basketball coach in 2022.

Now Davis has returned to Airline High, the largest school in Bossier City, as the head boys basketball coach, looking to bring his 25 years of experience in coaching and even more importantly, his ability to inspire young athletes to reach their potential on and off the court.

Quitman rally cut short by inclement weather at Division IV State Golf Tourney

QHS finished in 4th Place at LHSAA State Division IV Golf Championship

A determined rally on the second day of the LHSAA Division IV State Golf Tourney played at Cane Row Golf & Turf Club in New Iberia, by the “fab five” from Quitman High School never got the opportunity to reach fruition as play was called after nine holes due to a severe thunderstorm that produced heavy rain, dangerous lightning, and ping pong ball sized hail.

As a result, the Wolverines finished in 4th place in the team competition, moving up one spot from day one and frustrated about not getting the chance to capitalize on the second day’s best 172 team total fired over the front nine.

First day leader, Vermilion Catholic won the event, shortened to 27 holes with a two-day total of 517, three strokes better than Westminster Christian. Cedar Creek came in third with a score of 525, followed by Quitman, which checked in at 532, having reduced the 13-stroke deficit to Cedar Creek to just seven.

Individually, Noah Leach and Payton Nomey both carded a score of 130 over the 27 holes , which was good for a tie for 17th place. Grant Williams and Hudson Pullig turned in rounds of 135 and 137 respectively with Kase West rounding out the team effort with a 147 two day total.

Jackson Parish Golf Course hosting “3-Man Shamble” on May 10th

The first weekend tournament of the year, the ever-popular “3-Man Shamble”, will be played on Saturday, May 10th. The entry fee is $300 per team for the 18-hole tourney, consisting of 22 teams that will be divided into two flights. A $10.00 mulligan per player is also available to be purchased. Those 59 & younger will play white/blue tees while 60 & older golfers will use the yellow/black tees.

What is a “shamble” tournament? In a shamble, each player will tee off. The group will select the ball in the best position, and all three players on the team will play their own ball in from the selected position. The team score will be the aggregate total of the best two scores on each hole.

The payout per team, based on a full field, is as follows per flight.

1st Place – $1,200.00
2nd Place – $600.00
3rd Place $300.00

To register, contact Peyton Mitchell at (318) 245-4915 or Josh Stringer at (318) 475-0812.

Legacy League participants enjoy time on the field

It is the purest form of competition where no score is kept, no outs are recorded and positive reinforcement is given on each and every pitch, at bat and in the field. It is the Legacy League where 21 players from the ages of 4-18 with physical, developmental, or cognitive exceptionalities are placed on two teams and given the opportunity to play baseball in a fun-filled environment under volunteer assistance.

Volunteers play a big part in the games each week, offering as much or as little help as the player needs or wants. Sometimes it will be just guidance or positive reinforcement needed, while other times more physical help may be required.

Games are played each Monday evening at 5:30 pm on Field 3 of the Jackson Parish Recreation Department Sports Complex, located at 5254 Hwy 4, just east of Jonesboro.

This week it was the Quitman High School Cheer Group that buddied up with the players. If you have a group that would be interested in volunteering to assist with play, as Full Gospel Church and the United Pentecostal Church Youth Group did this week, please contact Christy.lenard@jpsbschools.us. Individual volunteers are also welcome and appreciated. Please include the date your group will be available to volunteer and the estimated number of people that will be assisting.

“Singing to the House”

By Brad Dison

In 2002, Michael and Kelley Flamoe were house hunting in Tacoma, Washington. They saw several houses which were all nice and would have fit their needs, but something held them back each time. They were all nice houses, but none felt like home to them. Then, the realtor took them to a house at 1112 North J Street in Tacoma. The neighborhood was nice.

All of the houses on North J Street were at least two stories. The houses were built on a hill about six feet tall, which gave them the appearance of being taller than they actually were. To get from the sidewalk to the front doors of the houses took two flights of stairs sided with wrought iron hand railings which added to the charm of North J Street.

Across the road sat a large grey stone Catholic church. It was a picturesque neighborhood. This house had a unique feature in that it was the only house on the block which had numerous groupings of square columns rather than single round columns supporting the porch and roof. Michael and Kelley loved the craftsman style of the home they were considering, and they had not even walked in the front door. After viewing the house’s interior and large backyard, Micheal and Kelley decided their search was over. At first glance, this house felt like home.

Michael and Kelley moved in a short time later. They were in the process of emptying their mountain of moving boxes when they heard a noise coming from the front of their new home. It was a pleasant noise. Michael and Kelley paused to listen more closely. They heard people singing.

They remembered the large Catholic church across the street. Perhaps the parishioners were singing, but they were certain they would be unable to hear the singing through the solid stone walls. Michael and Kelley walked to the front room and peered from the picture window. There, at the base of their two flights of stairs, stood a gathering of people who were singing to their new home. Michael and Kelley gave an awkward smile and wave, their singing neighbors returned the gesture. After three or four songs, they ended on a Christmas song, but Christmas was months away. As soon as they finished singing, the crowd began returning to their nearby homes as if it were a perfectly normal thing to do.

To the crowd, it was perfectly normal. They gathered once a week to sing to the house. Michael and Kelley were not bothered by the act, or by the other strange happenings that occasionally happened in front of their home. Carloads, and sometimes busloads, of tourists would stop in front of their home on the normally quiet street, pile out, take pictures of and selfies with the home, some would sing to the house, then they reboarded their mode of transportation and disappeared as quickly as they had come. The weekly singings and the random visits by tourists happened long before Michael and Kelley moved in and it continues to this day. You see, when Michael and Kelley moved into the home, they paid little attention to a bronze plaque embedded into one of the steps leading to the home. It read, “Birthplace of Harry Lillis “Bing” Crosby.”

TRSL paid $445 million in retirement income to North LA residents in FY 2024

Every parish in Louisiana benefits from TRSL pensions

The latest economic impact report from the Teachers’ Retirement System of Louisiana (TRSL) shows that retirement dollars are fueling regional economies across Louisiana.

In Fiscal Year 2024, TRSL provided $445 million in retirement income to North Louisiana retirees and beneficiaries (see chart below for a breakdown by parish), including $8,368,892.00 for residents of Jackson Parish.  Statewide, TRSL retirees received more than $2.1 billion in retirement income from the system.

Other highlights from the report:

(1) Almost 90% of the retirement dollars TRSL pays out goes to individuals who live in Louisiana, where they buy local goods and services.
(2) TRSL pensions support approximately 14,833 Louisiana jobs and more than $729 million in income.
(3) TRSL has invested more than $1.4 billion in companies that do business in Louisiana, supporting economic and job growth in the state.
(4) TRSL’s investment portfolio is a strategic partner in powering Louisiana’s workforce and economy. Among other investments, TRSL invested $4.0 million in Clearfork Midstream, LLC, which works with oil and natural gas producers in North Louisiana.
(5) Less than a penny of every dollar spent at TRSL is for administrative expenses. TRSL provides a high level of service at a low cost.

More information on TRSL’s economic impact can be found in the 2025 Investing in Louisiana report.

At Your Own Risk

The Dukes of Hazard provided TV viewers with redneck humor along with high-speed chase scenes. It wasn’t easy for Bo and Luke to avoid the harassment of Hazards’ Boss Hogg and Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane.

‘Dip Stick’ Roscoe got his thrills from vehicle hot pursuits of the Dukes. His sheriff’s car and the Dukes’ General Lee became hazards to all other drivers and pedestrians. Danger Ahead! Drive through Hazard at your own risk.

Christ followers have often served the Lord in dangerous situations. Risking their lives, they overcame obstacles. … “it seemed good to us, having become of one mind, to select men to send to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 15:25-27 NASB).”

You, even while fishing can become a risk taker. Will you accept the call?

“Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon, who was called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And He said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of people.’ Immediately, they left their nets and followed Him (Matthew 4:18-20 NASB).”

Death Notices

Eric Dewight Taylor
January 4, 1973 – May 3, 2025

Eric D. Taylor, 52, of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away on May 3, 2025 in Greensboro, AL.

He was born on January 4, 1973, to Hal and Linda Taylor in Meridian, MS.

A graduate of Wayne Academy, he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in environmental science at the University of West Alabama. An internship with the chemical company, ECC International, led to a full-time job after graduation.

He spent roughly 20 years in the pulp and paper industry, initially with chemical companies and eventually working for paper companies, starting at Georgia Pacific in Pennington, AL.

In 2016, he became Operations Manager at Smurfit WestRock’s Hodge Mill. He completed the Professional Master’s in Manufacturing Leadership program at Georgia Tech in August of 2018, where he was particularly taken with the philosophy of servant leadership. Soon he was promoted to General Manager of Hodge Mill. He invited his professor from the PMML program, Professor Thomas, to Hodge Mill, and along with servant leadership author and consultant, Jim Hunter, developed a training course called Hodge University for his senior leadership team and salaried employees. Eric’s professor was very impressed with his knowledge of environmental challenges and his pride of the positive steps Smurfit WestRock’s Hodge Mill was taking. He made the statement that

Eric embodied the spirit of servant leadership.

Currently, Eric was General Manager at Smurfit WestRock’s Stevenson Mill in Stevenson, AL.

Lives were touched and forever changed through his servant leadership style of managing, motivating and encouraging his people. He left a great legacy that will live on forever through those he invested in.

As accomplished as he was, his family was his first priority. They meant more to him than anything else in the world and he demonstrated that by being a very devoted husband and father. Mandi, Jack and Sadie, were his pride and joy, and they were just as crazy about him. He was intentional with morning and nighttime routines, special weekend breakfasts with Daddy cooking and lots of traveling as a family. And he was determined to provide for his family and give them the life he felt they deserved. He jumped in to give Mama a break by taking over some routine tasks and made every day more fun. He could often be heard doing sing-alongs with the kids….one of his greatest hits was “Down by the Bay.”

Mandi will tell you she was married to the most wonderful man she has ever known…the greatest husband and father. He was also a very special son, brother and uncle to his family. Eric was known as ET and will be so greatly missed. He was kind, funny, had a contagious laugh, big heart and gave big hugs. He loved fiercely and was such a devoted, giving person who would do anything for anybody. If you knew him, you loved him!

Eric was a faithful member of Douglas Church in Ruston, LA.

He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing and loved to share these experiences with family and friends. He also was an avid Ole Miss fan.

Eric is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Mandi Hunt Taylor, son Jack Bentley Taylor and daughter Sadie Isabelle Taylor; mother Linda Taylor, 2nd Mom Brenda Adair, brothers Randy Taylor (Karla) and Keith Taylor (Casey); sister Michelle Price (Blake); aunts and uncles, Shirley Faye Benson (Bill) and Ed Taylor, Jr. (Shirley), and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Hal Taylor and brother, Robert Anthony Taylor.

Family, friends and well-wishers will have the opportunity to pay their respects from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at Cooper’s Chapel Church, located at 2131 Hwy 511 in Quitman, MS, with the funeral immediately following. Interment will be at Odd Fellows Cemetery at 215 South Jackson Ave. in Quitman, MS, under the direction of Wright’s Funeral Home.

Priscilla Ann Angelle
March 11, 1943 – May 2, 2025

Priscilla Ann Angelle, age 82 of Jonesboro was called to her Heavenly home on Friday, May 2, 2025. Priscilla was born on Thursday, March 11, 1943 in Arnaudville, Louisiana to the union of Essie Joseph and Marie (Noel) Angelle. Priscilla was a strong woman with a big heart. She worked as a prison guard and as a sheriff’s deputy for East Feliciana Parish. She also spent some time working for a bakery where she learned cake making skills and eventually used these talents to have a side business making cakes to order. Priscilla was proud of and loved her Cajun culture. She loved to show off her Cajun roots anyway she could. If she saw a t-shirt that was about being Cajun, she was going to have to add it to her collection and wear it proudly. She was a great cook and enjoyed cooking up dishes such as gumbo and Etouffee for her family and friends.

Priscilla was a lady of many talents. She loved to bake, cook, to craft, do wood working, sewing, embroidering, quilting, jewelry making, hunting, fishing, crabbing, and deer hunting. If you met her she most likely was going to give you something before you left. She liked to gift new friends with pieces she had made and embroidered such and towels or aprons. When it came to deer hunting she loved to take her shot, but she usually was prepared just in case she missed. Priscilla would wear an old t-shirt when she hunted so that if she did miss the deer she did not get a good shirt torn. Priscilla enjoyed time with her family most of all. She loved her children and her nieces, nephews, and their children with all of the love her heart could muster.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Betty (Lachney) Womack and Darrell, Brenda (Lachney) Bryant and Cody; brother, Raymond Joseph Angelle and Margie Mae; brother in law, A.D. Stelly. She was preceded in death by her parents, Essie Joseph and Marie (Noel) Angelle; infant brother, Nelson Jospeh Angelle; siblings, Mercedes Angelle, Louis Benton Angelle, and twin sister, Patricia Ann Angelle Fontenot.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 5, 2025 at Ebenezer Baptist Church with Bro. Chris Lee officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery under the direction of Southern-Edmonds Funeral Home.

Evelyn (Moser) Baker
September 4, 1931 – May 2, 2025

Evelyn (Moser) Baker, age 93 of Quitman, made her Heavenly appointment on Friday, May 2, 2025. Evelyn was born in Jackson Parish on Friday, September 4, 1931 to the blessed union of Henry and Bessie (Anderson) Moser. She loved to keep busy and pass the time gardening and crocheting. She enjoyed getting out and looking for a good yard sale to explore. When it was game time she could be found watching football. She was a loyal Saints and LSU fan; through the good, the bad, and the ugly. She cheered them on through the good times and knew how they could have done better in the bad times. Evelyn also enjoyed attending Ansley Church until she could no longer drive. Evelyn’s heart belonged to her family. She loved her children dearly and treasured her grandchildren and great grandchildren. When it came to her grand babies she ate, slept, and breathed just to spend time doting her love on them.

Those left to cherish her precious memory are her children, Robert L. Baker, Roy Baker and Kim, Ronda Baker, and special friends and family members, Donnie Edwards and Sally; grandchildren, Trey Blalock and Danielle, Jourdan Caskey, Ashton Masters and Ryan, Lauren Huddleston; great grandchildren, Klea Blalock, Kutter Blalock, Krewe Blalock, Kensley Caskey, Rylen Caskey, Remi Upshaw, Lily Upshaw, Tucker Masters, Haigen Fenn, Owen Stevenson, and Mason Huddleston, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Baker; great grandchildren, Starlin Blalock; parents, Henry Rufus and Bessie Lillian (Anderson) Moser; siblings, Cecil Culpepper, Willie Mae Moser, and Herman Moser.

Quitman Softball to Face Stanley for Class B State Title on Sunday

The 2025 LHSAA softball season will end just like it began for the top two Class B softball teams in the state, when #1 ranked Quitman will face #2 Stanley for the Class B state title on Sunday, May 4th.  First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm (noon) on Field #15 of the North Frasch Softball Complex in Sulphur, LA.

The contest will ironically end the season as it began for both teams this year being a rematch of the season-opening game on February 28th which saw the two teams battle to a 6-6 tie after seven innings before Quitman exploded for 5 runs in the top of the 8th inning to take an 11-6 victory.

It also marks the second time in two years that the two schools will meet for a state title with Quitman beating Stanley 8-1 for the 2024 Division V “non select” school state championship while also continuing the trend of Quitman and Stanly playing in the regular season and then again in the playoffs as has been the case in three of the last four years. Over those five games played, Quitman has won each contest by an average of 10.8 – 2.6 runs per game.

Tale of the Tape!

Quitman, the #1 seed and District 1B champion, now stands at 20-10 on the season, won three games in the Class B bracket to earn the right to play in their third straight state championship game, and attempt to become back-to-back state champions. The Lady Wolverines beat #16, Florien, 12-2 in the regionals after earning a first-round bye, hammered #9, Holden, 17-5 in the quarterfinals, and shut out Grace Christian 4-0 in the semi-finals on Friday.

Stanley (23-7), the #2 seed and District 3B champion, earned the chance to gain revenge from last years state title game defeat to Quitman by blasting #15, Oak Hill 18-3 in the regionals after getting a first round bye, beating #10, Family Community 11-0 in the Quarterfinals and then squeaked by district rival and #6 seed, Zwolle 3-2 in the semifinals.

Class B Semi-Finals

Quitman 4 Grace Christian 0

In the battle between the two 2024 Division V state champions, Quitman rode the lightning left arm of LSU signee Cali Deal and the big bats of Maggie Guyotte and Hallie Kate Pullig to take the shutout victory.

It was a welcome sight for the Quitman faithful when Deal, who is considered by many as the top senior pitcher in the state, stepped into the circle for the Lady Wolverines to open the contest. The lanky lefty has been dealing (no pun intended) with a pinched nerve in her shoulder and had not started a game in more than a month, but did pitch three innings of relief in Quitman’s quarterfinal contest.

Despite having no feeling in her left arm while throwing a pitch, Deal struck out 12 batters and allowed just four hits in her seven-inning, complete game masterpiece.
“It’s like muscle memory at this point,” said Deal when asked how she could pitch so masterfully and not have any feeling in her arm. “I just concentrated on throwing strikes and put my trust in my defense.”

While Deal was using muscle memory to shut down Grace Christian, Hallie Kate Pullig was drawing on good offensive memories at the Frasch Softball Complex as well to help lift the Lady Wolverines. Now in her Freshman year, it was here last spring that Pullig burst on the statewide scene as an 8th grader when she stroked a pair of doubles and drove in five runs in the title game to earn the Most Outstanding Player Award.

On Friday, Pullig picked up where she left off last spring, going 3/3 at the plate, driving in two of Quitman’s four runs and scoring once, while improving her Frasch Complex batting statistics to 6 hits in 11 at bats for a .545 batting average that includes 2 doubles, a triple, and 8 RBI.

Another who has fond Frash memories is Maggie Guyotte. In the two games played last year, Guyotte went 4/5 with a double, a home run, 4 RBI, and 5 runs scored. Just a junior but already the premier power hitter in Lady Wolverine history, the Louisiana Tech signee continued her state tourney offensive exhibition by slapping a double, scoring two runs, and driving in another.

Newcomers to the state tourney scene, Brenna Lamkin (2/2, run scored, stolen base) and Briley Bowers (1/3) made their presence felt while veterans Karley Huckaby (2B) and Anna Leach (2/4) also contributed.

“We knew we were in for a tough game as this was a battle between two defending state champions going at it,” said QHS coach Justin Dodson. “I am very proud of how our girls played and came out on top.”

Scoring Recap:

1st inning: After Cali Deal struck out the side, Anna Leach stroked the first pitch she saw into centerfield for a single. Maggie Guyotte reached on a fielder’s choice that forced Leach at second and then went to second on a Cali Deal groundout before scoring on Hallie Kate Pullig’s clutch, two-out single to left field to give Quitman a 1-0 lead.

3rd Inning: Once again, Deal struck out the side in the top half, leading up to Brenna Lamkin singling and scoring on Guyotte’s double to put Quitman up 2-0. Again, Pullig came up with two outs, and again she hit a clutch single to score Guyotte and advanced to second on a fielding error by the left fielder. Zoee Williams then hit a pop fly to second base that was misplayed, allowing the heads-up Pullig to score from second base and give Quitman the final 4-0 margin.

Quitman High Sweeps Class B – Region 1 Girls and Boys Track Championships

A dozen schools from north Louisiaian descended on the track and field complex on the campus of Quitman High School and when the dust finally settled on the girls and boys competition, it was homestanding Quitman whio was the “host with the most,” grabbing both girls and boys Class B – Region 1 team titles.

The Lady Wolverines ran away with the girls competition scoring 135 points to finish far ahead of second place Converse, who had only 73 points. Weston High came in 8th place with 46 points.

It was a much different story in the boys competition that wasn’t decided until the final event with Quitman taking a narrow 125-124 victory over fellow district 1B competitor Castor. Jackson Parish was also represented by Weston High who came in 6th place with 39 points.

It was not necessarily the number of first through third place finishes that brought the trophy home for Quitman, but the overall depth of both the girls and boys teams that saw Quitman score points in virtually every  event

In girls’ competition, Megan Kelley and Kaleigh King were two-time winners, with Lily Kate Odom and Kaleigh Webb winning gold along with the girls’ 4×200 and 4×400 meter relay teams.

Gage Horton and Nathin Harvey grabbed gold in two events, with Asher Shultz and Jayden Harts also coming in first place in their respective events. The 4×200 and 4×400 meter boys relay teams also earned gold medals.

Both Quitman sqauds will now look forward to the LHSAA Class B state track meet that will be held May 8-10 at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium on the campus of LSU in Baton Rouge, La.

Siadek paces Weston contention

Nadia Siadek and Nathin Wages grabbed gold medals while Wages, Jaydon Simmons, Addison Faulkner and Gracie Gray earned silver medals and Teegan Hall, Gray, and Simmons all came home with bronze medals for third place finishes in their respective events.

First Inning Explosion Lifts Weston past Avoyelles Charter in Class B Regionals

Going, Going, Gone!
Jase Borders goes deep for a first-inning three-run shot, his first-ever playoff home run

Ask any Weston High School player or coach, and they will tell you that they have some unfinished business to attend to. What they are referring to is coming up short in the 2024 Division V state tournament in the semifinal round after beginning with a lofty #2 seed.

The Wolves, again seeded #2 in the Class B state tournament, left no doubt that they are totally focused on going all the way this spring as evidenced by the 11-2 thrashing of #15 Avoyelles Public Charter in the regional round.

The victory, which improved District 1B champion Weston’s record to 20-10, which doesn’t include three win over out of state opponents, sets up a quarterfinal rematch from 2024 against #10 Lacassine, who won District 6B with a 5-0 record but has posted only a 12-12 overall record. In last year’s game, Weston won by an 8-1 margin.

Game time is set for 6:00 pm on Tuesday, May 6th on Field 4 of the Jackson Parish Recreation Department Sports Complex, located at 5254 Hwy 4 east of Jonesboro.

The winner would then advance to the 2025 LHSAA Class B state tourney to face the winner of #3 Family Community and #6 Holden in a semifinal matchup that will be played at McMurry Park in Sulphur, LA on May 13-17.

Weston 11 Avoyelles Public Charter 2

Even after making two infield errors to help APC take a 1-0 lead, any hopes of pulling off an upset were quickly dashed as Weston scored six runs in their half of the inning to basically put the game away. Drew Browning got the fireworks started by coaxing a a walk and then scoring on back to back singles by Cole Tola and Colton Blundell. Jacob Gill got hit by a pitch and Ty Henderson drove in a run with a fielder’s choice. That set up the big blow of the inning when Jase Borders smashed a shot over the left field fence to plate three. Walks to Luke Weaver, Sawyer Watkins, and Browning for the second time, sandwiching a single by Bryce Zehr that upped the lead to 6-1.

The Wolves would add three more to the total in the bottom of the third when Weaver, and Zehr drew walks and Browning smashing a two out, three run, bomb over the center field wall to give Weston a 9-2 lead. A double by Jacob Gill scored Tolar and Blundell who had singled and reached on catcher interference for Weston’s final runs of the game.

It was a total team effort for the Wolves, who pounded out 9 hits and had 11 reach base via free passes or APC errors. Every batter scored or drove in a run with the exception of one led by two hits each by Tolar and Gill, 3 RBI’s each from Browning and Borders and Browning, Tolar, Blundell and Weaver all scoring two runs. Zehr and Henderson also scored a run each. Sawyer Watkins picked up the win by throwing a complete game seven hitter, while striking out five and allowing only one earned run.
