New “Back-To-Back” State Champions Sign Erected at QHS Softball Field

With a new school year beginning in Jackson Parish on Wednesday, August 20th, it also marks the beginning of a new sports season. Ask any coach what one of the first things they tell his/her team at the beginning of a new season, and they will tell you that last year is past and has nothing to do with what will take place this season.

Even if it was winning a second straight state title, such as what the Lady Wolverines softball team from Quitman High School did.

While the QHS coaching staff may want the players to move on from the past glory of the last two years, the fans will have something to bring back the memories every time they come to the Lady Wolverines’ home softball field.

Earlier this week, a new “Back-To-Back” state champion sign was erected at the field that commemorates the tremendous accomplishment achieved by the 2025 Lady Wolverine team.

Framed in a white post border, the 4′ x 8′ sign features the wording 2025 Quitman Lady Wolverines at the top with a picture of the players and coaching staff shown just below. Underneath is the wording Back to Back STATE CHAMPIONS with the names of the team members, coaching staff, and managers at the bottom.

Daily Devotional by Pam Ford Davis

We’ve all heard it; ‘you’re only as old as you feel.’

Faith has a big effect on how we feel.

“One day some people from the tribe of Judah went to Joshua at Gilgal. One of them was Caleb, the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite. Caleb said to Joshua, ‘You remember what the Lord said at Kadesh Barnea. The Lord was speaking to Moses, his servant. The Lord was talking about you and me. Moses, the Lord’s servant, sent me to look at the land where we were going. I was 40 years old at that time. When I came back, I told Moses what I thought about the land. The other men who went with me told the people things that made them afraid. But I really believed that the Lord would allow us to take that land. So that day Moses made a promise to me. He said, ‘The land where you went will become your land. Your children will own that land forever. I will give you that land because you really believed in the Lord, my God.’

‘Now the Lord has kept me alive for 45 more years—as he said he would. During that time we all wandered in the desert. Now, here I am, 85 years old. I am still as strong today as I was the day Moses sent me out. I am as ready to fight as I was then (Joshua 14:6-11 ERV).”

Faith kept Caleb fit; he didn’t allow his age to hinder God’s purpose.

BOIL ADVISORY LIFTED: Chatham Water System

Chatham Water System
PWS ID# 1049004
Jackson Parish, Louisiana
August 14, 2025
For Immediate Release

The boil advisory issued by the Chatham Water System on August 8, 2025, has been lifted.
After a Boil Water Advisory is lifted, it is advised that you flush your pipes.

• Begin with sink faucet on the lowest floor.

• Slowly open the cold water sink faucet. Opening slowly allows for the release of trapped air and may reduce the banging noise, known as a “water hammer” that can occur when water flow and pressure
changes as a result of water main repair work.

• Repeat on each floor, moving from lowest to highest, only opening cold water sink faucets.
• Once the water runs clear, usually in 5 minutes or less, turn off faucets in the same order, lowest to highest.

• You should also flush your refrigerator’s water lines.

• Customers and businesses should also dispose of stored water, drinks, or ice made since the Boil Water Advisory. The next three batches of ice should also be thrown out. Ice maker containers should be wiped clean with a solution of two tablespoons of bleach to one gallon of water.

Gregory C. Harris, Mayor
Village of Chatham

Boil Advisory Still in Place for Town of Chatham Water System

Chatham Mayor Gregory Harris announces that the Boil Advisory that was first issued for the Chatham Water System on Friday, August 8th is STILL IN PLACE and will remain in effect until further notice.

The boil advisory, which only affects Chatham Water System customers, was issued due to the main line having to be cut off to isolate water so that an old two-inch (2”) main could be capped. New Hope Water System customers are not included in the boil advisory.

It is recommended that all consumers continue to disinfect their water before consuming it (including fountain drinks), making ice, brushing teeth, or using it for food preparation or rinsing of foods by the following means:

Boil water for one (1) full minute in a clean container. The one-minute starts after the water has been brought to a rolling boil. (The flat taste can be eliminated by shaking the water in a clean bottle or pouring it from one clean container to another, or by adding a pinch of salt to each quart of water that is boiled.)

Again, those under the boil advisory, be sure to disinfect your water prior to consumption until you have been advised otherwise.

Samples collected from the water supply were sent to the Louisiana Office of Public Health Regional Laboratory for testing. Once Chatham officials have received notification that the water supply has been deemed safe, the Boil Advisory will then be lifted.

School Bus Safety Message for Our Community

On August 20th, students in Jackson Parish will begin classes for the 2025-26 school year, meaning that once again, school buses will be picking up and bringing students back home in the mornings and afternoons each day.

With that in mind, Jackson Parish School Board Transportation Supervisor David Brown has issued the following statement to all residents.

Attention, parents, guardians, drivers, and community members

Be mindful of school buses on our roads. Our district’s buses run every school day, servicing students across the community. Typically, buses begin morning routes around 6:00 a.m., with afternoon routes completing by approximately 4:30 p.m. Please remain alert—especially during morning drop‑off and afternoon pick‑up hours.

Stop for school buses. When a school bus activates its flashing red lights and extends its stop-arm, vehicles traveling in both directions must stop, unless they are separated by a raised center median.

Use alternate routes or extra caution during these times. To ease congestion, consider adjusting travel times or routes during bus-heavy periods.

Be especially cautious at bus stops. Use caution when driving through residential neighborhoods and school zones. Children may be waiting or gathering near the street, especially in low-light conditions.

Drive at appropriate speeds. Observe school zone speed limits, posted signs, and flashing lights near bus stops and schools.

Wait for children to board and disembark safely. Do not proceed until students have fully crossed the street or boarded, and the stop-arm is fully retracted.

Parents/guardians: prepare students in advance. Ensure children arrive at designated bus stops at least 5 minutes early. Encourage lining up safely away from the road, boarding in single file, and staying visible to the bus driver at all times.

Respect bus drivers and follow their instructions. They work to keep our children safe. When loading or unloading students, be considerate and follow directions to avoid distractions.

Thank you for adhering to these safety precautions so that we can help ensure that our children remain as safe as possible while being transported to and from school.

Palace Theater on Louisiana Trust for Historic Preservation Endangered List

The Louisiana Trust for Historic Preservation released the list of endangered sites, adding 14 this year that are in need of restoration. Three of the sites are in Northeast Louisiana, including the Palace Theater in Jonesboro and two abandoned schools in Winn Parish.

The list is created from people sending in nominations to include a site on the list.

Brian Davis, the Louisiana Trust for Historic Preservation Executive Director, explains the process.

“We always consider those once a year an ad the committee reviews it and then decides which ones were able to hopefully help by doing some advocacy work and providing more technical services to those sites and their owners,“ said Davis.

Once selected, they visit the sites and speak to the owners to see if it has the possibility of being restored.

“Kind of understand the site’s better, really do a deep dive on the site’s their owners, their needs, the threats that they’re faced, seeing if there are, you know, historic tax credits like state or federal tax credits, other grants or anything else like that that may be able to help fund these projects and get them back in good shape,” said Davis.

This helps communities restore their identity as these buildings are part of the unique fingerprint they have on them. Originally built before 1924, the Palace Theater served as the only professional entertainment venue in Jonesboro for years and was a significant architectural landmark.

Amy Magee inducted into Louisiana 4-H Hall of Fame as member of Class of 2025

2025 LA 4-H Hall of Fame Inductees
Amy Magee (seated far right)

Last week, it was announced that Amy Magee’s brother Scott, had been selected to be inducted into the Jackson Parish Sports Hall of Fame in October, seemingly the first of Sammy and Nelda Carter’s offspring to earn such acclaim.

As it turned out his sister beat him to it!

On Sunday, August 9th the Magee family, along with Jackson Parish 4-H Director Kristina Bourgeous, descended on Camp Grant Walker located just outside of Pollock, LA, for the annual Louisiana 4-H Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, where 11 distinguished individuals, including the Weston native Magee, were enshrined.

The Louisiana 4-H Hall of Fame was created in 2008 during the 100th Anniversary of Louisiana 4-H. The Hall of Fame annually recognizes up to twelve outstanding 4-H volunteers, leaders, and/or Extension retirees who have dedicated themselves and service to the youth of the 4-H program and our state.

Quitman High School honored by LHSAA for being Violation Free in 2024-25

Over the past two years (2023-25), Quitman High School was one of only three members of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) to win five state championships and the only “small school” (Class AA – C) to claim that distinction.

Making the tremendous success even more impressive was the fact that QHS is the only school of the 340 institutions of learning in the LHSAA to have achieved such lofty standards and done so without committing a single violation.

The LHSAA verified this recently by naming Quitman High a “School of Distinction” for not committing any violations during the 2024-25 school year.

Congratulations to the administration and coaches of Quitman High School for not only having one of the most successful athletic programs in the state of Louisiana but also proving that you can win without cheating.

Daniel Allen and Michelle Bartlett of JPASD earn Gold Paramedic status

Solid Gold!
Daniel Allen (l) and Michelle Bartett (r) have earned Gold Paramedic status by the NREMT

For those in Emergency Medical Services, the path to becoming a Paramedic is one of sacrifice and unwavering dedication that demands virtually everything you have to earn the certification.

Long shifts on the ambulance lead to sleepless nights of studying. Days off become hours of sitting in classrooms, clinical rotations, and skills labs. Meals are skipped, holidays with family are missed, and personal time becomes a luxury as the grueling schedule taxes you emotionally, mentally, and physically, bringing you to the edge of total exhaustion.

It tests your limits, but it also sharpens your purpose.

Daniel Allen and Michelle Bartlett began this exact journey together in July 2022, enrolling in the very first EMT training class taught at the Jackson Parish Ambulance Service District (JPASD) Training Center. After completion, the pair then enrolled in the Advanced EMT Program before signing up for the Paramedic Program in 2024.

Today, the two stand at the finish line of the “Road to Gold” having recently been awarded the coveted GOLD Paramedic Patch by the National Registry of Emergency Technicians (NREMT), and with it the distinction, honor, and responsibility that comes with being a leader in pre-hospital emergency care.

Congratulations to Daniel and Michelle on earning your GOLD Patch and to the Jackson Parish Ambulance Service District in Jonesboro for providing the means to allow these two to achieve this standard.

Pets in Peril: How Domestic Violence Affects Animals in Abusive Homes

When domestic violence occurs, it doesn’t just affect the human victims—it also endangers pets. Animals in abusive households often become collateral damage, suffering from neglect, physical harm, or being used as tools of control against their owners. The impact of domestic violence on pets is a critical yet often overlooked issue that requires attention and action.

Research shows that abusers frequently target pets as a means to intimidate and manipulate their victims. According to the National Link Coalition, up to 71% of domestic violence survivors report that their abuser has threatened, harmed, or killed a pet. These acts of cruelty deepen the emotional trauma experienced by survivors and make it even harder for them to leave.

For many survivors, the fear of leaving their pets behind prevents them from escaping an abusive situation. Most domestic violence shelters do not allow animals, forcing survivors to choose between their own safety and their pet’s well-being. This heartbreaking dilemma often leads victims to stay in dangerous environments to protect their beloved companions.

To address this issue, an increasing number of shelters are incorporating pet-friendly accommodations or partnering with local animal shelters to provide temporary housing for pets. Programs like the Purple Leash Project advocate for more resources to help survivors and their pets find safety together. Expanding these initiatives is crucial in removing barriers for those seeking to escape abuse.

Several states have enacted laws allowing pets to be included in protective orders, recognizing them as vulnerable members of the household. These legal protections help prevent abusers from using animals as leverage to control their victims. However, more work is needed to ensure these protections are enforced and expanded nationwide.

Addressing the intersection of domestic violence and animal welfare requires a collaborative effort. Advocates, policymakers, and communities must work together to increase awareness, expand pet-friendly shelter options, and strengthen legal protections for animals. Additionally, donations and volunteer support for organizations that provide safe havens for pets can make a significant impact.

No one—human or animal—should have to suffer in silence. By recognizing and addressing the risks faced by pets in abusive homes, we can help protect all victims and create a pathway to safety for both survivors and their beloved companions.

“The Contest Queen”

Evelyn Ryan worked hard helping her husband, Leo, provide for their struggling family. Evelyn and Leo married in 1936 and had ten children together. Since 1943, Leo had been employed by the Defiance Screw Machine Products, but his salary usually failed to meet the needs of such a large family. Leo purportedly turned to alcohol to quell the stresses of their financial struggles which only worsened the situation. Evelyn had too many household obligations to take on a job which required her to be away from home, but she needed a way to earn money.

By the early 1950s, Evelyn and Leo’s older children were nearing their teenage years, and the family’s financial struggles along with Leo’s drinking was getting worse. One day in September 1953, Evelyn took a momentary break from her endless chores to read the newspaper when she saw an advertisement for a Western Auto Bike Contest.
Evelyn had a background in writing. While in junior high, her step-grandmother, Josephine Etchie, who was the editor of the Sherwood Chronicle, got Evelyn an after-school job as a typesetter for the newspaper. In 1931, Evelyn was the valedictorian of Sherwood High School. Soon after graduation, she became a columnist at the newspaper. She worked at the newspaper until she quit to take care of her growing family.

She read the Western Auto Bike Contest information again and learned that she could enter by completing the phrase in 25 words or less, “I like the all-new ‘X-53 Super’ Western Flyer bicycle because…” The ad announced that the “winner’s family gets all this: $5,000 cash and bike for child, plus 15-h.p. outboard motor for dad, plus automatic washer and dryer for mom!” While Evelyn returned to her endless household chores, she mulled over her entry. Finally, she completed the phrase on the entry form, “brand new ideas about safety, service, sleekness, combined with Western Flyer’s old reliable construction, make ‘X-53 Super’ a standout in ANY bike rack.”

The Wester Auto Bike Contest was just the first of many writing contests that Evelyn won. In 1961, she won a 1961 Triumph TR3 sports car, a Seeburg jukebox, and a trip for two to New York City to appear on Merv Griffin’s Saturday Prom television show. She quickly sold the car and jukebox to pay bills, but she and her son Bruce enjoyed their trip to New York. Evelyn won about one in every four contests she entered. She won kitchen appliances, TVs, watches, sports equipment, and a host of other items. She won so many contests that she earned the nickname the Contest Queen.

At first glance, it appeared that the Ryans were rolling in money, but the large family remained impoverished. In 1965, unbeknownst to Evelyn, Leo took out a second mortgage on their house at 801 Washington Avenue in Defiance, Ohio. Evelyn learned about the second mortgage when she received a final notice from the bank. Unless they could come up with $3,500.00, they would be homeless. Evelyn read about a contest held by Dr. Pepper in which contestants were asked to complete the following limerick: “With Dr. Pepper, the flavor that’s in. It’s distinctive and bright. It’s lively and light.” Evelyn completed the form with, “There’s no time like NOW to begin!” Out of 250,000 entries, Evelyn won the grand prize, which was a two-week trip for two to Switzerland, a new Ford Mustang, his-and-hers gold Longines wristwatches, and $3,500.00 in cash. Evelyn received the cash payment on the day before they were to be evicted from their home.
