Historic defensive effort lifts JHHS past Plain Dealing

On paper, the game between Jonesboro-Hodge High School and Plain Dealing this past Thursday night looked to be a mismatch. It was. And in historic fashion.

Jonesboro-Hodge had no trouble in beating the Lions 40-0 in the district 1-1A matchup that lifted the Tigers to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in district play, while Plain Dealing fell to 0-8 and 0-6 and saw their state-longest losing streak, dating back to 2021, move to 44 straight games.

While the final score was no surprise, the way the Tigers’ defense totally shut down the Lions was, as JHHS set two new defensive school records by limiting Plain Dealing to a minus 34 yards rushing and minus 24 yards in total offense. This was all done with a running clock after the first period, and JHHS leading 27-0.

“I am very pleased with the focus our guys had,” said JHHS head coach Terrrance Blankenship. “It would have been easy for them to just go through the motions, especially after we got the big lead early, but they gave a strong effort the whole game.”

If the football game had been a prize fight, it would have ended early in the first period, as after eight total plays, the Tigers were already up 14-0. The first score came after JHHS held  Plain Dealing to a “three and out” and took possession on their own 32-yard line following a punt. Three plays and 68 yards later, the Tigers scored, bolstered by a 15-yard facemask penalty and runs of 27 and 23 yards by Landon Boston, the latter a touchdown. On the ensuing kickoff, the Tigers forced a fumble, which they recovered at the Plain Dealing 34-yard line, and on their first play, scored when King Campbell threw a short pass to the right flats that Lontre’vious “Tre” Burns corralled and ran past the Plain Dealing defense the rest of the way into the endzone. Kyron Atkins then ran in the two-point conversion to put JHHS up 14-0 after only 3 minutes and 42 seconds had gone off the clock.

Plain Dealing then fumbled on the second play of their next possession, giving the Tigers the ball at the Lions’ 30-yard line, where a Dakota Knox 25-yard run set up a 5-yard touchdown run up the middle by Marquis Baker. The Sadaar Stevens extra point made it 21-0.

Another “three and out” by the Tiger defense set up a Plain Dealing punt attempt at their own 23-yard line, but the snap sailed high overhead and gave JHHS the ball at the Lions 1 1-yard line, where Atkins plunged in on the first play for his first touchdown as a Tiger that gave JHHS a commanding 27-0 lead as the quarter expired.

Despite the big lead and the Tigers having a 133 to minus 19 yardage advantage over the outmanned Lions, to their credit, they continued to give it all they had, something that drew praise from Blankenship.

“Coach Byrd is in a really tough situation with only 19 players on the roster and six of them being 8th graders,” reflected Blankeship. “He is doing a great job, though, keeping them together and playing hard. You can bet that in a few years, he will have built them up to where they are competitive.”

With the clock now continuously running, the second quarter lasted only nine plays with the first half ending on a Juquan Qualls interception, the fourth turnover of the first half by Plain Dealing.

JHHS got the ball to open the second half and immediately embarked on an 8-play 68-yard drive highlighted by Sadaar Stevens, all 320 pounds of him, running it in from 8 yards out for his first-ever touchdown as a Tiger and unofficially being the heaviest man in Tiger history to score a touchdown. His extra point made it 34-0 at the end of three. The Tigers would score a final touchdown in the fourth quarter when Anthony Paggett took it in from 4 yards out for his first career score.

NEXT UP! JHHS will be on the road again this Thursday, October 30, as they travel to Minden, LA to take on Glenbrook in a District 1-1A battle. Kick off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

LHSAA Announces Preliminary School Classifications for 2026-28

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) has announced details for the upcoming 2026–2028 reclassification period, releasing preliminary school placements ahead of its scheduled meetings.

The reclassification process determines where member schools of the LHSAA will compete for the next two academic years (2026-28), including any adjustments to class or select/non-select designations.

Jonesboro-Hodge is shown to be classified as a Class A School and will compete in Division IV “non-select” school postseason activities. Quitman is listed as a “non-select” Class B school and will compete in Division V in boys and girls basketball, baseball, softball, and cross country, while being placed in Division IV for tennis, Division III in boys golf, and Division II in girls golf. Weston is shown to be a “non-select” school and in Division V for boys and girls basketball, baseball, softball, and cross country, with a Division IV designation for boys golf and tennis, and Division III in girls golf.

Classification is determined by the total number of students in each school, unless a request to “play up” is received, meaning that the school wishes to play in a higher classification.

Basic classification guidelines broken down by enrollment numbers are:

Class 5A  (1033 and up)
Class 4A (608 – 1032)
Class 3A (397 – 607)
Class 2A (231 – 396)
Class A (1 – 230)
Class B (111 -230)
Class C (1-106)

Note: Schools that don’t play football are classified as a Class B or C school.

Student body enrollment numbers of each Jackson Parish school show Quitman High School to have the most students at 213, followed by Jonesboro-Hodge High School with 197, and Weston with 177 students in the 9th – 12th grades.

Appeals of classifications will be heard beginning on November 6, while the final classification meeting is set for December 3rd.

Glynn Harris Outdoors and Fishing Report

Remembering a Special Dad

Looking through the thousands of photos on my computer, I ran across one of my dad, and that put me in the frame of mind to share just what a special man he was to me.

Thomas Ernest “Doc” Harris was born in the hamlet of Friendship, LA, on March 5, 1909. His mom was Edna Strain; his dad was William Austin Harris, older brother to the well-known long-time state Superintendent of Education, T.H. Harris.

My grandfather was a hill farmer who eventually moved the family to Goldonna, another community about the size of Friendship.

In his growing up years, dad was sometimes described as a “rounder”, getting involved in all the stuff kids did back in those days. He was a good athlete, especially in track and field, where pole vaulting was an event to which he excelled.

After high school, dad wanted to see the world, so he joined the U.S. Navy and upon returning home, he was attracted to LeMee Meek, a young lady in the neighboring town of Readhimer. They married, built a house in Goldonna, and were parents to three children. I was the first to come along followed by my brother Tom, and eventually to a sister, Linda.

I remember tagging along with him when one of his first jobs was going around the countryside selling Watkins Products. Later, he worked for the highway department and eventually landed a job with the LA Department of Wildlife and Fisheries as a state trapper and eventually being promoted to Supervisor of Predator Control for the Department. It was during his 30-year career that my memories are most special.

I was the envy of kids back in school when they learned that my dad made his living trapping wolves and bobcats, creatures that were creating havoc among folks who had cattle, hogs, and chickens. Among my most special memories was when I got to go with him early summer mornings to run his traps. Watching how he carefully set his traps and returning the next day to find a wolf, bobcat, or fox in a trap I watched him set was especially exciting for a 10-year-old boy.

There was a report of a cougar hanging around a portion of rural Natchitoches Parish, with Dad’s assignment to trap it. He didn’t catch it, but he came close as the cougar stepped in his trap on a day when rain the night before had allowed sand to filter beneath the pan of the trap, and when the cat stepped on it, it failed to trip. I have in my office today a concrete print of the cougar track dad poured of that cat he came close to trapping.

Over the course of his career, it became evident that the red wolves he had been trapping were starting to fade out. Coyotes had moved into the state from Texas and began interbreeding with the wolves, rendering offspring that were no longer pure red wolves. His efforts changed from trapping them to trying to help preserve their fading numbers.

Today, except for a remnant of pure red wolves in a protected area in the Carolinas, they no longer roam the hills of our state, and that’s a shame. Getting to hear the mournful howl of these animals at night on a Winn Parish hillside is a memory I cherish.

Dad had been gone to his Heavenly reward for almost 50 years. I feel blessed to have been the son of a special man who taught me how to hunt squirrels, sneak up on wood ducks, and catch a bass, and do it all in an ethical way

He would be thrilled to know that his son took so much of what he taught me and turned it into becoming an outdoors writer, which is how I make my living today.

Kiss Method

Are you familiar with the kiss method?

No, I don’t refer to methods of smooching; instead, I bring up the subject of project methodology. My husband Norm is an advocate of the kiss method.

K-eep

S-imple
S-tupid.

Why do we complicate things?

Is that action commendable?

Where’s the wisdom in that?

God is at work in simple things and people.

Plane Crash in Northern Jackson Parish Results in Fatality

The yellow line shows the path of the plane that crashed in northern Jackson Parish

A crash of a small plane that went down in northern Jackson Parish, roughly about five miles from the Ruston Regional Airport on Tuesday, October 21st, has claimed the life of a man who was en route to Ruston, LA from Huntsville, TX.

The name of the pilot who was flying solo has not been released at present, but according to reports, the Cirrus SR22 airplane is registered to LaSalle Management Company in Ruston. The private company operates the Jackson Parish Correctional Center in Jonesboro and other prisons in the region.

Flightradar24 shows the plane’s path from Huntsville, Texas, to near the Ruston airport. It made a couple of loops before the path stopped. The Jackson Parish Sheriff’s Office was notified about the potential of a crash around 10:30 a.m., with air traffic control in Ruston reporting a plane going off the radar.

According to a statement made by Jackson Parish Sheriff Andy Brown, the crash site was in a heavily wooded area around State Highway 146 and Old Snipe Road southeast of the Ruston airport, with no homes or other structures nearby.

Parent-Teacher Conferences at all local public schools on Thursday

The Jackson Parish School District announces that from 3:00 – 8:00 pm on Thursday, October 23rd, Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held at all local public schools. This is a great opportunity for all parents and/or guardians to meet with the children’s teachers, discuss progress, and learn how, by working together, continued success during this school year can be achieved.

Tigers travel to Plain Dealing for Thursday Night Tilt

Talk about going from the bottom to the top. No, this isn’t a discussion about placements or standings after seven weeks of the LHSAA prep football season. This is about direction and location.

Jonesboro-Hodge High School will load up for a second straight LONG road trip this Thursday (YES, you read that right, THURSDAY!!) as the Tigers delve back into District 1-1A play by making a trip to the very northwest corner of the state to Plain Dealing.

Compared to the solid three-hour jaunt south to deep in the heart of “Cajun Country” where the Tigers bested Dequincy 21-7 to move to 4-3 on the season, the estimated one hour and 40 minute drive to Plain Dealing seems like a walk in the park, but it is still a long way.

“After Thursday, we will have gone about as far south and north as you can go in the state,” laughed JHHS head coach Terrance Blankenship, who looks at the back-to-back long road trips as a positive for his team.

“There was really no rhyme or reason that it was scheduled this way. Kind of the way it fell when we were forced to find a replacement for Ringgold on the schedule last year,” said Blankenship. “As it turns out, though, this is a great experience to prepare us for what might be ahead when we get to the postseason.”

Tigers make big leap in Power Point Rankings!

The long road trip to DeQuincy and the corresponding 21-7 victory certainly proved fruitful for JHHS as the Tigers jumped all the way to #16  in Division IV “non-select” school rankings, up four spots from the week before.

“The win was good for us in a lot of ways, and certainly in the rankings,” confirmed Blankenship. “If we can continue to keep this momentum going, we will have a shot at hosting a playoff game, which we really want for our fans.”

Series History! Fifteen times these two schools have been scheduled to play each other since the first contest in 1929, with JHHS holding a commanding 13-2 all-time advantage. This includes the 2-0 forfeit victory awarded to Jonesboro-Hodge after Plain Dealing didn’t show up for what was to be the Tigers’ 2024 Homecoming Game, stating that they didn’t have enough healthy players to field a team. The last time the two schools did play was in  2018, with JHHS taking a 50-6 victory, which came on the heels of a 32-13 victory in 2017, giving J-H head coach Terrance Blankenship a 3-0 record against the Lions. The two times Plain Dealing has won in the series were a 28-18 victory in 1995 and an 8-6 affair in 1998.

Career Night! Brayden Martin goes off from long range to lift Quitman

Brayden Martin made 6 three-pointers in the second quarter to lift Quitman past Choudrant

When you’re hot, you’re hot! – Jerry Reed (1971)

It was a long time ago when country music icon Jerry Reed sang the catchy lyrics but they couldn’t be more on time when describing the second quarter that Brayden Martin in Quitman’s dominating 80-32 pre-season victory. over Choudrant on Tuesday.

Six times, Martin played “string music” from behind the arc in the second quarter that lifted the visiting Wolverines to a commanding 54-18 lead at the half. Add three free throws and a field goal, and the QHS senior accounted for 23 of the 33 points the Wolverines made in the quarter on his way to a team-leading 26 points, all made in the first half. Taden Thomas and Brayden Smith also reached “double digits” with 16 and 13 points, respectively, while Larson Thomas netted nine and Shane Reed added eight points and pulled down a team-tying 7 rebounds. Asher Schultz finished with four, and both Kaleb Maxwell and Abel Leach, who also had 7 boards, tallied two points each.

Late Rally Falls Short for QHS girls

A 28-12 halftime lead by Choudrant was too much for Quitman to overcome despite a spirited second-half rally that drew the Lady Wolverines to within three points late in the game. The tough shooting night that saw QHS make only 13 of 55 (24%) field goals dampered what was a great night by Anna Leach, who scored 23 points (half the Quitman total) that included three 3-pointers. Hallie Kate Pullig was next in scoring with 8 points and led QHS with 9 rebounds, as Allie Robertson finished with 7 points. Kinsley Ponder, Taylor Borland, Annie Mobley, and Emma Walker, who also had 5 boards and 4 steals, all tallied two points each.
