Anyone who has ever experienced their expertise knows that the Jackson Parish Ambulance Service District (JPASD) has one of the best Emergency Medical Service departments you would ever want to find.

The administration and staff of the JPASD have always known the secret behind their success in handling medical emergencies, and now the rest of the state knows as well.

The secret was made public on Friday, June 5th, at the annual Louisiana EMS Education Conference and Expo, held at the Convention Center in Shreveport, LA, where JoLynn Smith, Lead Instructor and Operations Director of the JPASD, was named EMS Instructor of the Year.

JPASD Releases Call Report for May

June 1-7 each year is National CPR and AED Awareness Week, spotlighting how lives can be saved if more Americans know CPR and how to use an AED.

Did you know that about 70 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in homes? If you are called on to give CPR in an emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of someone you love. Be the difference for your parent, spouse, or child.

Addison Fenn Named Recipient of 2026 Pat Thomas Memorial Scholarship

The Thomas family proudly announces that the 2026 Pat Thomas Memorial Scholarship winner is Addison Paige Fenn. Addison was presented with a one-time $1,000.00 scholarship during the Quitman High School graduation ceremony held on Saturday, May 23, 2026. She plans to attend Louisiana State University and major in pre-nursing or pre-law.

The Thomas family would like to thank those who have served on the selection committee, both this year and in the past. Choosing a recipient each year is challenging. We would also like to express our gratitude to Principal Chris Cavin and the staff at QHS for their continued support throughout this process each year.

Following the 2016 death of our mom, Pat Thomas, our family established the Thomas Family Scholarship Fund. We wanted to honor her legacy of service to God, her Church, her community, and to Quitman High School. In addition to the scholarship, our family also makes donations to special projects, an athletic team, an activity, or a club at the school.

As part of the selection process, all scholarship applicants are screened based on the following characteristics that were present in the life of our mom:
• Honor
• Character
• Integrity
• Humility
• Willingness to serve others without the expectation of recognition or personal attention.

Addison certainly encompasses all of Mom’s attributes. The committee was particularly impressed by Addison’s character, determination, and compassion. The letters of recommendation we receive each year on behalf of the applicants always provide great insight.

The comments below are just a sample of the comments written about Addison:

“Addison has consistently demonstrated a strong work ethic, professionalism, and a willingness to go above and beyond. Her communication skills and ability to interact with others in a courteous and helpful manner makes her an asset in any setting.”

“She approaches adversity with maturity and determination, qualities that set her apart as a student and individual.”

“Because of Addison’s leadership qualities, academic excellence, and deep appreciation for her family, friends, and faith, I wholeheartedly believe she is well-prepared for success beyond high school.”

Even though Addison may not yet know whether her path will lead her toward pre-nursing or pre-law, she walks forward with confidence, knowing that God has already laid out the perfect plan for her. The Thomas family has no doubt that He will guide her toward the path where she can make the greatest impact—one that allows her to bless the world, honor her purpose, and continue the legacy of strength and excellence carried by our mom and the winners that have come before her.

Addison wrote:

“I know that God has the perfect plan for me. My faith is very important to me.”

“I would like to give back to the community. Volunteering has shown me that humanity isn’t as lost as we might think sometimes. Even if we see on the news sometimes people hurting others, helping out your community will bring it together and allow this to not happen quite as much as it does now.”

Change the world, Addison! We need more compassionate people who are willing to go the extra mile. Congratulations! We pray God blesses you and your journey! – Thomas family

Jackson Parish Dixie Youth Baseball / Softball All-Star Teams Selected

When you walk through the entranceway of the Jackson Parish Recreation Department Sports Complex, the first thing you see is a long line of youth baseball and softball All-Star teams from Jackson Parish that have won state championships in various age groups.

The long legacy of excellence achieved by Jackson Parish in youth league All-Star competition is incredible, especially when you consider that a parish with just a little over 15,000 residents has attained such tremendous success against teams from all over the state, including such large metropolitan areas as New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Shreveport, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Alexandria, and Monroe.

Now the newest group of All-Stars has been selected to compete in the 2026 Dixie Youth Baseball and Softball District Tournaments, each hoping for an eventual state title banner of their own to add to the “Walk of Fame.”

Glynn Harris Outdoors and Fishing Report

Despite Efforts To Eradicate, Coyotes Are Here To Stay

My dad spent the last 30 years before he retired working with predator control for the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. His job, simply stated, was a wolf trapper. He also trapped bobcat, foxes and other predators but red wolves were his primary focus.

During that period in the 1940s and ‘50s, wolves had no competition from other similar sized canids until another more prolific creature, the coyote, began to show up in the state. As far as I’ve been able to determine, my dad trapped the very first coyote ever captured in Louisiana. As the population of red wolves began declining, his focus was mainly on the more prolific coyote.

It is not uncommon today to hear and see coyotes. I can remember feeling the hair stand up on the back of my neck before daylight as I made my way to my deer stand and a pack of coyotes began their piercing howls, yipping and yapping nearby.

An organization that covers interesting wildlife stories, “The Lonely Camp” has produced an article on Facebook that captured my attention because it dealt with coyotes, how despite efforts to eradicate them they seem to continue to proliferate.

Killing half a million coyotes per year has not slowed the production of these animals, according to the article. The coyotes’ range has expanded 40% during this same time.
The way they operate is completely different from other predators. Lethal control has greatly reduced or eliminated such species as timber wolves which have been basically wiped out, the grizzly bear pushed to just a handful of mountain strongholds.

“Yet,” according to the article, “the coyote absorbed the same pressure, same traps, same poison, same aerial gunning, same bounty systems and responded by walking into every state the wolf has vacated, every city the mountain lion had abandoned, and every landscape that lethal control was supposed to clear.”

Research has shown several reasons why coyotes have not responded in the way other predators have. Breeding is one factor. A coyote pair produces an average of six pups a year but under heavy pressure, the litter size is increased. You kill more and the survivors produce more.

There is zero incidence of infidelity or polygamy among coyotes. During estrus, the pair spends every hour together and should a mate die, the survivor grieves.

The animal that humans have spent a century trying to exterminate mates for life, raises young cooperatively, grieves its dead, and compensates by raising larger litters. Simply stated, coyotes have responded to the most sustained management in history by quietly colonizing every state in the continental United States.

It matters not what humans try to do to it. Nothing we have ever done is sufficient to outpace an animal that breeds fast, bonds absolutely, and replaces its losses.

So if you live in the country, the next time you’re sitting outside at dusk watching lightning bugs fire up their tiny lights and a pack of coyotes begin singing their loud and eerie songs across the way, just enjoy it because nothing you can ever do will quiet them.

Coyotes, like mosquitoes, kudzu, and fire ants, are here to stay.

”Coyote numbers have grown to such numbers that they can show up anywhere at any time.” Glynn Harris photo

Ponderings…..

I’ve been pondering one of life’s great mysteries: what happened to hats?

Real hats.

The kind men used to wear when they went to work, went to town, or went anywhere except the shower. Once upon a time, a man wouldn’t leave the house without a fedora, a trilby, or something with a brim wide enough to shade half the county.

Now the only folks still wearing real hats are cowboys—and even they take them off indoors, which is more than I can say for the baseball cap crowd at Walmart.

I watch Perry Mason before bed most nights. Not for the suspense—there isn’t any. We all know Perry’s client didn’t do it. I watch to see how much the world has changed. In the 1957 episodes, everybody wears a hat. Even Perry. The only hatless soul is Paul Drake, the detective, who apparently needed full cranial ventilation to solve crimes.

And have you noticed?

Nobody has a television in their living room. They’re sitting around talking to each other like it’s normal. Wild times.

Do y’all know what happened to hats? Should we start a new fad here in Ruston? On second thought, no. I’d rather someone start a movement to make neckties disappear.

That’s the one part of my calling I’ve never understood. Why wrap a decorative noose around my neck and cut off blood flow to my already overworked brain?

I’m trying to preach the gospel, not pass out in the pulpit.

Someone please start a necktie revolt. I’ll sign the petition.

And while we’re talking about things that vanished—what happened to CB radios? That was the first social media. You could make friends for a solid five miles. Longer if you were driving 55 on the interstate, which we all were back then, unless we weren’t, which is why we needed the CB in the first place.

“Breaker one nine, where’s Smokey hiding?” Then radar detectors came along and CBs went the way of the eight track.

Some things I’m glad disappeared. Felt boards in church. I never trusted those things. One wrong move and Moses would fall off Mount Sinai. Typewriters? Good riddance. I used more liquid paper than ribbon. I’m surprised they didn’t sell it by the gallon.

But here’s something I hope doesn’t vanish: YOU!

So go to church on Sunday—before someone starts wondering what happened to you.

She also leaves behind her treasured grandchildren, Wade (Gabriel), Logan (Skilar), and Addison, who were the light of her life. Phyllis was eagerly anticipating the arrival of her first great-granddaughter, Charlie, due in October, a blessing she spoke of with great excitement and love. Also survived by her Aunt Nora Jane and Uncle Ray Littlejohn, who were like a mother and father to her.
In addition to her immediate family, Phyllis is survived by numerous relatives and many close friends, especially her lifelong friend Jaynece, whose lives were enriched by her presence.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Marshal Wayne Smith; her son, Adam Smith; and her cherished grandmother, Ollie Mae Dark.

Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we take comfort in knowing that Phyllis’s legacy of strength, love, and perseverance will continue through the family she adored and the countless lives she touched. Her memory will forever be a source of comfort, inspiration, and love.

The Life Celebration Service will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, June 7th, at Weston Baptist Church with Interment to follow in the Chatham Cemetery in Chatham, LA, under the direction of Paradise Funeral Home in Jonesboro.

Serving as pallbearers will be: Wade Smith, Logan Smith, Kevin Smith, John David Smith, Todd Griffith, and Andy Walsworth.

A Jonesboro man was arrested last week after a traffic stop in Grambling resulted in the discovery of suspected narcotics, according to a police report.

Jorden A. Dill, 20, of Jonesboro, was arrested by Grambling Police about 10:30 p.m. on May 27.

According to the report, an officer saw a gray sedan fail to stop at a stop sign, prompting a traffic stop. The report states officers made contact with the driver and smelled the strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

During a search of the vehicle, officers located a bottle of promethazine hydrochloride, a prescription bottle with the label scraped off containing a green liquid, and a small bag of about 4.1 grams of suspected marijuana.

Dill, a passenger in the vehicle, said the items in a backpack belonged to him. The driver was released.

Dill was booked at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center for possession of a legend drug and possession of marijuana.
