A SHOT IN THE ARM FOR LAKE CLAIBORNE

She’s old, gotten fairly long in the tooth and like most of us, we tend to slow down once this happens to us. There is hope, however, for one of this area’s favorite lakes, Lake Claiborne.

I was fortunate to live in Homer when the lake was constructed and watched water begin trickling over the spillway half a century ago indicating that at long last the lake was now what it was designed to be, a brand new 6400 acre body of water that would provide recreational opportunities not only for the folks living in Claiborne Parish but around north Louisiana as well.

I found a lot on the Beaver Creek branch of the lake, put my money down and purchased the lot so I could enjoy what this new lake had to offer, and boy, did it offer some good stuff.

After purchasing the lot, clearing it off, I did something then I couldn’t think of doing
now. With the help of friends, I built a pier and boat house where I kept my ski boat and fishing boat and there weren’t many afternoons after work that I was not out there taking my kids skiing and searching for some of the best fishing holes.

One particular hot spot for bass was a row of green willows that grew in the middle of
Beaver Creek just a long cast from my pier. This was one of the hottest spots on the lake to ease up early morning before the sun began to peak over the distant trees to the row of willows, cast out a Tiny Torpedo next to the greenery. I’ve had successful fishing trips since but nothing to me was more fun than being close enough to be able to glance over my shoulder at my boat house, cast the lure and watch a bass explode on it.

Man, that was some genuine fun.

I eventually moved from Homer, sold my lot and my trips back to the lake became fewer and further between and it was just as well because the red hot fishing Claiborne had offered was starting to wane. The lake began acting like most lakes with some age on them as vegetation died away and things just weren’t the same any longer.

Something has happened to this half a century old lake over the past few years. First off, the Lake Commission arranged to purchase and release in the lake a species of bass that would hopefully add a shot in the arm to the lake, Tiger bass.

Genetically, they’re a special combination of native largemouth and those of the Florida strain that while not having the potential of growing as large as pure Florida’s, tend to be more aggressive and more likely to strike a lure.

I recently visited with Fisheries Manager for Northwest Louisiana for the Louisiana
Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Jeff Sibley, who is responsible for the management of Lake Claiborne.

“In addition to the Tiger bass that have been released in the lake over the past five years or so, our department is also releasing pure Florida bass which may not be as easy to catch but have the potential of growing quite big,” Sibley said.

Another shot in the arm for Claiborne took place a few weeks ago when the Major
League Fishing circuit was in Louisiana fishing on Caney Lake and Bussey Brake. This group has a habitat project they fund on lakes in the states where their tournaments are held.

“They choose a lake not on the tournament circuit and this year they chose Claiborne and contributed some $25,000 to improve the fishing habitat. Special fish attracting structures were put together and placed in the lake in several locations, mainly around the State Park with coordinates available so anglers could locate the structures that should attract fish,” he said.

Time will tell if these “shots in the arm” will return Lake Claiborne to one anglers will be hitting more frequently with the real possibility of bringing in bragging sized fish.

”This beautiful sunrise on Lake Claiborne gives indication of new birth on the lake as recent activities indicate its fishery should improve.”

Jackson Parish 4-H presents awards Field Achievement Day

(submitted by Kristina Bourgeois) Mother Nature thwarted the original plans, but with strategic planning to avoid most conflicts, over 100 Jackson Parish 4-Hers were able to participate in the 2023 Learning in the Field Achievement Day. 4-Hers traveled out to the Jackson Parish Recreation Complex and spent time both working together and competing against one another. The morning session focused on our 4th -7th grade 4-Hers while the afternoon session was for our 8th -12th graders.

These 4-Hers rotated through stations where a different challenge was presented to the group each time. Station 1 was set up and run by the amazing ladies from the SCILS – Region 8 La STEM Center. 4-Hers were challenged to “build” a cantilever arm that would extend out from the surface 34 inches without collapsing. Lots of teamwork and thinking went into these builds but our 4-Hers were up for the challenge.

Next they moved to a 65 foot long inflatable obstacle course. Some looked at it as a personal challenge and some took it on as a competition. After flexing their physical prowess, these 4-Hers were faced with a mental challenge. Each group was handed a stack of cards with words printed on them. They had to try to unscramble the word cards to complete the Pledge of Allegiance and the 4-H Pledge before any other group completed them.

Following those challenges, our 4-Hers were able to relax in the shade, take a mental break, and do something for our community. Our 4-Hers worked on painting suncatchers to be delivered to the residents of one of our local nursing homes this summer. We hope these brightly colored gifts will bring joy to those residents. The last available station was set up by our Nutrition Agent, Mrs. Shannan Chevallier. She focused on “Getting Moving” and easy games to assist with fitness goals.

Midday saw all our 4-Hers come together for a hot dog lunch grilled especially for them by Mr. Donny Moon and Jr Leader helpers as well as a few awards being shared.
School club leaders were given a certificate and an appreciation gift because we all
know this program couldn’t run without them. They are our contact point for each individual school and do more behind-the-scenes work than you can even imagine.

After recognizing the leaders, two special awards were given out. Jonesboro Hodge
High School took home the 2023 Outstanding Jackson Parish 4-H Club Award for their dedication and amazing work outside of our regularly scheduled club meetings.

We then recognized Jake Potts of Quitman High School as our 2023 Outstanding Jackson Parish 4-H Club Member. Jake has participated in 4-H opportunities and events across the Parish, Region, and State Levels this year. He is a dedicated 4-H member and is willing to help at the drop of a hat.

The last award that was delivered post Achievement Day was the 2023 Best Banner Award received by Jonesboro Hodge Middle School for creating a banner that best represented their school and Jackson Parish 4-H.

Special thank you to all our club leaders, volunteers, Jr Leaders, and 4-H members for
making this an amazing day. Thank you to our school administrators and bus drivers for allowing our youth to participate. 2023 4-H Achievement Day is done!

LDWF restocks Caney Lake with bass

If you are concerned that all the many bass tournaments, ranging from local benefits to the professional Major League Fishing Tour event, that has been conducted on Caney Lake seemingly each week will hurt the bass population. Don’t be!

Earlier this past week the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) released fifty thousand (50,000) bass fingerlings into the lake at the State Park ramp. Yes! Fifty thousand!

They may be small now but they are certain to grow and help keep Caney Lake’s tradition of being one of the best bass fishing lakes in the nation.

Future State Record?
LDWF put 50,000 of these bass fingerlings in Caney Lake last week.

Ponderings……

I married in December and survived the gift giving that first Christmas as a husband. The following July was the first birthday celebration for my bride with me in charge of gifts. There was great pressure to give the perfect gift to express my love and devotion.

She hinted about perfume and jewelry.

Her hints were clear and strong.

Still today when she really wants something she will pick up the object at least three times. I follow her closely at Lowe’s and keep an eye on the things she picks up or touches. She’s not touching the grill I want for Father’s Day, but I’m not giving up hope.

I was unaware of the three touch phenomenon until the sixth year of marriage.

I didn’t know in our first summer of marriage about her ways of hinting. I was at a loss for an appropriate birthday present. The date of her birthday neared. I purchased the cake. I purchased and had the kids sign appropriate cards for her. I purchased her gift. When your wife wants perfume or jewelry there are all sorts of creative and husband-point-winning choices.

I chose a weed-eater.

She was speechless. It was a green electric weed eater. A family legend was born.

I was reminded of that disaster as Mother’s Day approached. I am exempt from gift-giving on Mother’s Day. I have invoked the “you are not my mother” rule, which applies to husbands that have children old enough to pick out and purchase any Mother’s Day gift necessary.

I have not checked on all the gifts that were given and received last Sunday, but I know about some of them. A member of the church has requested a waffle iron for quite a while. I can understand that desire. A waffle iron is a mysterious kitchen appliance. Waffles are consistently yummy.

She didn’t receive the desired waffle iron, she received jewelry. The jewelry is beautiful and she is grateful. She wanted a waffle iron. She has asked for a Mother’s Day waffle iron for three years and for three years has received the most exquisite jewelry.

Her husband obviously knows the first rule of husband gift giving, no small appliances.

One of the early followers of Jesus wrote, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father.”

God gave the perfect gift in the person of His son Jesus. Jesus offers us the hope of a second chance and a new beginning.

He offers forgiveness, even for giving lousy gifts!

Jonesboro to celebrate receiving National Guard Armory on Friday

With Representative Jack McFarland and Louisiana National Guard (LNG) General Keith Waddell expected to be on hand, the Town of Jonesboro will celebrate receiving the National Guard Armory with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, May 19th.

The gala event that commemorates the revitalization of the shuttered Armory, into a much needed addition to the town of Jonesboro infrastructure will take place at 10:00 am at the Armory, located at 520 East Main Street. A reception at the City Hall of Jonesboro will follow.

“This will be a great day for the town of Jonesboro and we invite everyone to come and help us celebrate,” said Jonesboro Mayor James “Spike” Harris.

The agreement for the Town of Jonesboro to assume ownership of the Armory structures and adjoining property came about through discussions between Jonesboro Mayor James “Spike” Harris and Representative McFarland about how the property could be used. McFarland then orchestrated a meeting with General Keith Waddell of the Louisiana National Guard, who proposed giving the former home of the 199th Brigade Support Battalion back to the town.

“Much appreciation and thanks is to be given to Representative McFarland,” said Harris. “He was instrumental in getting this done as he arranged the meetings with General Waddell and played a big role in bringing this to fruition,” added Harris.

Mayor Harris said receiving the structures and property provides for an immediate boon to infrastructure operations and a future benefit to the residents of Jonesboro as well.

“This helps our town in so many ways,” continued Harris. “By relocating the Police Department and Public Works into the buildings this allows for much more operating room and better working conditions. It is also great for our residents, as with the additional property was are receiving, we can now refurbish the area that has always been known as Fairgrounds Hill, allowing for this to become a vibrant events area once again as it was in the past.”

Routine traffic stop in Hodge results in shocking developments

As result of patrolling one of the more heavily traveled highways in the state, there is hardly ever a day goes by that a Police Officer for the Village of Hodge doesn’t respond to a traffic violation. So when the radar in the unit sounded off indicating a motorist was speeding, it lent promise that the patrolman on duty would be just conducting a normal, run-of-the-mill, stop. Only it wasn’t!

Instead the result was the apprehension of one of the most notorious sought after suspected offenders of a violent crime in the state of Louisiana.

According to the report on file with the Hodge Police Department, on May 5th a black SUV was clocked going through Hodge on Hwy 167 doing 58 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone. After pulling the vehicle over it was noticed by the Officer that there were three people in the auto.

Following text book procedure, the Officer retrieved identification from each and contacted the Jackson Parish Sheriff’s Office Dispatcher. Immediate response identified the driver as Jonrell Jones, with the advisement that his drivers license was suspended.

What was learned next was shocking!

Dispatch further advised that the passenger in the back seat, Shawnchez Lemar, had a warrant for his arrest on 12 counts of being a principal in a first degree murder attempt in East Baton Rouge Parish.

Almost simultaneously, two Jackson Parish Sheriff Deputies arrived on the scene to assist in removing the occupants from the vehicle, resulting in the apprehension of the violent offender without incident.

Hodge Mayor, Gerald Palmer, commended his Officer and the two JPSO Deputies for their pristine handling of the potentially explosive situation.

“I am proud of the way our Officer conducted his duties and utilized his training,” said Palmer. “I also compliment the two JPSO Deputies that responded, as by all calmly performing their duties by the book, a very dangerous person was apprehended without incident.”

Bernadean Jones appointed to fill vacant Village of Chatham Council seat

At the regularly scheduled meeting for the month of May, Bernadean James Jones was appointed as a councilmember for the Village of Chatham. James replaces former councilmember Paula Ackley.  agreed to introduce three Ordinances, including two that involved budget considerations.

In additional action, Councilmembers Toni Malone, Sue Proffer and Mike Wilson agreed to introduce three Ordinances and called for a Public Hearing for each to be set for June 13th. Laverne Mixon was absent.

Ordinances introduced were:

Ordinance 2023-01: Amended Budget for fiscal year 2022-2023
Ordinance 2023-02: Budget for fiscal year 2023-2024
Ordinance 2023-03: Franchise Agreement with Entergy

The session began with Alvin Palmer speaking about ongoing drainage problems in the Village. Chatham Mayor Gregory Harris responded by stating that he would get in touch with Jackson Parish Police Juror, Lewis Chatham, to see what could be done.

Jake Potts selected to represent Jackson Parish as Ag Ambassador

This past week Ag Ambassadors from all over central  and northwest Louisiana, including Jake Potts of Quitman High School, (shown above) had the wonderful opportunity to learn about the agricultural industry and the wide variety of available career paths.

The educational outing began with “tomorrow’s leaders” going to  Doug Young’s Nursery in Forest Hill to learn about the Horticulture industry. From there it was on to Alex Box Stadium, home of the LSU baseball team where they learned about turf grass before heading to the Louisiana State Capitol to meet with several Senators and Representatives. Capping off the educational day was a visit to the new Louisiana Farm Bureau state office.

“Splash Pad” at Jimmie Davis State Park up and running

Want to enjoy an outing with your family on Caney Lake but want to do something besides going fishing? Then load up and come to the always popular Splash Pad located in the day use area at Jimmie Davis State Park. Young and old alike can enjoy scampering through the cool spray or just relaxing in one place while alternating geysers of cool water cascade down.

If the splash pad wets your appetite for more water fun then jump in the clear water of the swimming area. When finished dry out and work on that tan by laying on the wide sandy beach while enjoying the scenic beauty of the lake.

Don’t forget to pack the picnic basket!  After having the “fun  in the sun” you can enjoy a picnic under one of the many covered pavilions located throughout. For ap perfect cap to the day watch the sun slowly set over the lake providing some of the most beautiful panoramic views you would ever want.

Whatever your pleasure, Caney Lake and the Jimmie Davis State Park, located at 1209 State Park Road just outside of Chatham, LA,  has something for everyone in the family.
