Debra Hargrove Fordham celebrates 55th Anniversary at State Farm Insurance

(l-r) Shawn Murphy, Debra Fordham, Latonya Moss, and Kaitlyn Etheridge

The year was 1970. It was a time of unrest as protests raged over the Vietnam War across the nation, including violent gatherings at Kent State and Jackson State Universities, where students ended up being shot and killed. The formation of the EPA and OSHA made the workplace safer, and Casey Kasem hosted his first American Top 40 program.

Locally, another significant event took place as well. While maybe not one that would register on the national scale it was a happening that still brings joy and benefits to Jackson Parish residents today.

That was the year that Jonesboro resident Debra Hargrove Fordham began her tenure with State Farm Insurance Agency. Truly, it is a rarity to find someone who has been at the same job for 55 years, but according to the post she made on her Facebook page, on August 25th, the day of her work anniversary, she has no plans to end her career any time soon.

“We are celebrating my 55 years at the farm today! I have the best boss, Shawn Murphy, his wife, Donna Kay, and teammates in the world! Thanks for everything! Looking forward to another 55 years working with you all! And to you, my loyal customers, you are the BEST! And to my quilting buddies, check out my cake made by Sheryl Holder, along with her scrumptious brownies and cookies! Love all of you!

Congratulations, Debra, on your tremendous accomplishment!

Quitman Junior High Basketball Tourney to be held August 28-29

Quitman Junior High School will host their annual tournament on Thursday and Friday, August 28-29. Six teams are slated for play, including host Quitman, Weston, Dodson, Castor, Claiborne Christian, and Choudrant.

Not only will local fans of junior high basketball get the opportunity to see what the future holds for Quitman and Weston varsity teams, but the answers to several current questions will be discovered.

Will either the girls’ or boys’ teams from Quitman Junior High School win their own tournament? Will the Weston Junior High boys stay undefeated and win their second straight tournament title? Will Choudrant and Claiborne Christian take advantage of their first-round byes?

Quitman Junior High Tournament Brackets

Tuesday Tilts

Two new streaks were started, and another continued as both Quitman and Weston hit the road on Tuesday for junior high tilts against Choudrant and Castor respectively. The Lady Wolves won their first game of the season 28-18, while the Weston boys continued their early-season domination by winning by a 46-11 margin to go to 4-0 on the season. For the Quitman Lady Wolverines the new streak that was started wasn’t as enjoyable as QJH lost their first game of the year 37-31 after winning their first three played. No score was reported in the QJH/Choudrant boys game.

Weston 28 Castor 18 (girls) – A suffocating defensive effort that didn’t allow Castor to score more than five points in any of the four quarters lifted head coach Jennifer Tolar and the Lady Wolves to their first victory of the 2025 season. Rachel Bandy went 4/6 from the free throw line and hit a pair of baskets to lead Weston in scoring with 8 points. Saniyah Saulsberry also came up big with a new season best six points, while Mallory Malone, Don’Nia Spence, and Kate Keiffer all pitched in with four points each. Laken Borders also got her first points of the season with a fourth-quarter field goal.

Weston 46 Castor 11 (boys) – The venue was different, but the results were the same as WJH blew Castor away for the second time in less than one week. As was the case in waltzing to the Dodson Tournament title this past weekend, it was a superb effort on both sides of the court that led to the Wolves’ fourth straight victory to open the season. Weston scored in double figures in the first three quarters before head coach Jacob Otwll emptied his bench with Weston up 45-11. On the defensive side of the ball, the Wolves also came up big once again as they held their opponent to single digits in all four quarters for the third game in a row, and the second time against Castor. A pair of three pointers led to a new WJH individual scoring best of 17 points by Leyton Younse, and Eli Henderson poured in 10 to also reach “double figures” in points. Colten Otwell was just one point behind with nine, while Andrea Spence scored six, and both Cason Conn and Bryce Tolar chipped in two points each.

CJH Scoring: Ward 8, Nealy 3

Choudrant 37 Quitman 31 (Girls) – Homestanding Choudrant jumped out to an 11-2 lead that held up despite a determined fourth quarter rally to saddle the Lady Wolverines with their first loss of the season. Ella Simonelli scored 11 points, including 7 in the fourth quarter, which saw QJH outscore Choudrant 15 to 8 to nearly cut the deficit in half. Audrina Martin also had a big game with 10 points while Amelia Stagg scored 5 first-quarter points, Bella Caskey tallied three and Kynleigh Leach hit a four quarter basket to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolverines.

“A Silly Solution”

In 2006, 28-year-old Army Specialist Todd Shriver was just one of many soldiers fighting in Iraq against Saddam Hussein’s regime. Todd and other soldiers in his unit were tasked with clearing buildings of enemy insurgents in the city of Ramadi, but the work was slow.

The soldiers listened for any movement in the room to be cleared. If they heard nothing, the soldiers took a quick peak into a room, with a mirror if one was available, to check for any signs of obvious danger such as enemy soldiers or explosives. They could be hiding anywhere.

Then, the soldiers cautiously and slowly walked or crawled through the doorway with their weapons at the ready. Once a room was cleared, they repeated the process on a slow, seemingly endless cycle.

If they failed to notice a tripwire, just one…BOOM!

Enemy soldiers had set booby traps in many of the buildings. The explosives were triggered by nearly invisible trip wires. The various branches of the military had spent an untold amount of money searching for a practical solution for finding these tripwires, but none of their ideas became standard-issue equipment.

Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Garver, a U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad, explained that soldiers often have to improvise on the battlefield and that commanders are given money to purchase nonstandard supplies.

During the war in Iraq, soldiers bolted scrap metal to vehicles in what they called “Hillbilly Armor.” Troops removed old bulletproof windshields from damaged vehicles and attached them to working military vehicles to provide extra protection to gunners. Medics used tampons to plug bullet holes until the wounded soldiers could be transported from the battlefield to medical facilities. Soldiers used condoms over the muzzles of their rifles to keep sand out.

With no clear solution to easily locating tripwires, Todd and his fellow soldiers continued the slow process of clearing buildings. One day in October 2006, Todd was assisting some Marines in clearing a building. It was pretty much the same process of listen and look.

Then, the Marine did something Todd was not expecting. He pulled out an aerosol can and sprayed its contents through the doorway. Todd was curious about the Marine’s action, but the soldiers knew to keep quiet. After clearing a few rooms in the same manner, the Marine took out the aerosol can and sprayed it as he had through the other doorways.

This time, something different happened. The contents that spewed from the can clung to a nearly invisible thread that spanned the doorway. With a quick push of the can’s nozzle, the soldiers located a practically invisible tripwire that could have been deadly.

Todd requested cans of the product, but none could be found in Iraq. The product was plentiful in the United States, so Todd turned to his mother, Marcelle Shriver. On a telephone call, Todd told her what the product was and how they could use it if they had it. Todd’s mother sprang into action.

She sent her son a few cans of the spray, but they needed more. With the help of her church, Todd’s mother sent him a few more dozen cans. Word spread quickly about the need, and manufacturers joined in the cause.

Within a year, Todd’s mother had sent more than 80,000 cans of the spray to soldiers in Iraq. Todd’s mother was collecting the spray cans, not from hardware stores, but from party supply stores. You see, the product in the aerosol cans that has saved countless lives by making the invisible tripwires visible was a silly solution called Silly String.

Weston High School Gymnasium Receives New Scoreboards

It will be an interesting answer to what could be considered a Weston High School historical trivia question.  What would be asked is “Who scored the first points registered on the new Weston High School scoreboard?”

New scoreboard?

Actually, when you enter the WHS gymnasium this fall, you will see two brand spanking new basketball scoreboards in place at each end. This is a result of the support given by Jonesboro State Bank / Pledge 10 program.

“Special thanks to Thurston Allen and Jonesboro State Bank for the support to Weston High School and our two new scoreboards in the gym! They look great…Go Wolves!” – WHS Principal David Huckaby

Morning Devotional by Pam Ford Davis

So Good!

Slang fascinates me. How does a slang expression start, who first said it, and why?

Two popular examples of slang quickly come to mind. First, who hasn’t heard ‘not’ as the way to cross out something just said? I’m a millionaire.

‘Not!’

The next example of slang puzzles me. ‘I’m good.’ Someone offers a person something (such as coffee or tea) and gets the ‘I’m good’ response. Whatever happened to yes please or no thank you?

My personal opinion…

‘Whatever!’

Enough of my sarcasm; it’s time to get serious.

Are you good; am I?

Even young children know who’s good. It’s God.

“God is great, God is good; let us thank Him for our food.” (Public Domain)

God, YOU are so good to me.

“O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever.

O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever.

To him who alone doeth great wonders: for his mercy endureth for ever.

To him that by wisdom made the heavens: for his mercy endureth for ever (Psalm 136:1-5 KJV).”

I’m blessed and I know why. God is good!

10-Digit Dialing Required beginning Monday, August 25th

The new 457 area code is now in operation in the area shaded red

Beginning August 25, Louisiana residents will need to dial the full 10-digit phone number — area code plus the seven-digit number — for all local calls. The change is part of a statewide transition prompted by the need for additional phone numbers as population growth and technology demands strain existing area codes.

Why the Change?

Phone number demand has surged due to population growth and new technology. To address this, the Louisiana Public Service Commission has approved a new overlay: area code 457, which will serve the same geographic area as 318.

  • February 24 to August 24, 2025 — Permissive dialing period: both 7- and 10-digit dialing work.

  • Starting August 25, 2025 — 10-digit dialing becomes mandatory within the 318 region. Calls dialed with only seven digits will not connect.

  • Beginning September 25, 2025 — New phone numbers in the region may use the 457 area code, and dialing will remain 10-digit for both 318 and 457 numbers.

While the change may take some getting used to, phone companies say the new system will ensure calls are routed properly and help prevent future disruptions as more numbers are assigned.

Quick tips to prepare for 10-digit dialing:

  • Update saved contacts in your phone to include the area code.

  • Reprogram speed dials, alarm systems, medical alert devices, and fax machines.

  • Check any business materials (signs, stationery, websites) to ensure phone numbers are shown with the area code.

  • Start practicing now so the transition feels natural by August 25.

As Louisiana joins the growing list of states using 10-digit dialing, officials encourage residents to view the change as a necessary step toward keeping the phone network running smoothly in a world where mobile devices, new technologies, and expanded services are creating a constant demand for more numbers.

Tiger Coaching Staff Pleased with Results of Pre-Season Scrimmage

JHHS running back breaks into the open during the pre-season scrimmage played on Friday

For the most part, the three-team, round robin scrimmage, Jonesboro-Hodge, D’Arbonne Woods, and Mangham High School that was played at Caldwell-Peacock Stadium on the JHHS campus this past Friday evening went as expected.

The controlled scrimmage saw the first team offense from all three teams have the opportunity to run 15 plays each against the first team defense of their opponent, beginning at their own 20-yard line. There were no kick-offs or punting. After that sequence, all three teams had the opportunity to work on their goal-line offense and defense.

While no score was kept and no clock was run, in the end, JHHS played Class 3A D’Arbonne Woods to a standstill in the 15-play portion of the scrimmage, and the Tigers took an advantage while running plays from the goal line. Against Mangham, the sledding was a little tougher as the visiting Dragons, who return almost all of their starting lineup from a year ago, showed why they are expected to be one of the top Class 2A teams in north Louisiana.

As is almost always the case when a team takes to the field for the first time in a season, some things are done well, and other areas show the need for improvement. In summary, some results were expected and others were a surprise.

“Overall, I thought we executed pretty good to be lining up for the first time this year,” said JHHS head coach Terrance Blankenship, now entering a school record 14th year at the helm. “We were missing a couple of our expected starters on the line, but still moved the ball pretty well against both teams, and our defense played respectfully.”

Blankenship further stated that what he took away as the best part of the exhibition was the play from several young players who are getting their first opportunity to play varsity ball.

“I was very pleased with the way some of our young guys looked, especially on offense,” recalled Blankenship. “Several of our younger guys made plays that opened our eyes and made us think that they may be more ready than is normal for a player with no experience, which would be a great thing for us.”

NEXT UP! The Tigers now turn their focus to the 19th annual Bayou Jamb that will be played at Malone Stadium on the campus of the University of Louisiana-Monroe at 5:00 pm on Friday, August 29th, where they will square off against Delhi Charter in the first game of the two-day event that will showcase 16 teams from north Louisiana.

“The guys are looking forward to playing in the first game of the jamboree and setting a good tone for the season,” commented Blankenship. “While the game doesn’t count on the season record, it is important for us to give a good showing as we play this team again later in the season when it will count.”

Buy Your Tickets at JHHS: Tiger fans who intend to show their support by attending the Bayou Jamb are encouraged to purchase tickets to the event at Jonesboro-Hodge High School, as it not only benefits the team but also will be cheaper than purchasing a ticket at the gate on game day.

The entire revenue gained by tickets purchased in advance goes to Jonesboro-Hodge, whereas revenue from tickets bought at the gate is split among the participants. Each ticket is good for all three games on tap that Friday evening, which will include a matchup between Richwood and Mangham and a star-studded matchup of two of the top Class 5A teams in the state, Ruston and Neville.

As an added incentive for Tiger supporters, game tickets that are purchased at the school will cost only $12.00 per person, whereas those bought at the gate on game day will carry a $15.00 price tag.

Season Opener! JHMS to host Arcadia on Tuesday, August 26th

Jonesboro-Hodge Middle School invites you to come and support the youthful Tigers when they open the 2025 football season by hosting  Arcadia Junior High on Tuesday, August 26th. The contest will be played at JHMS, located at 440 Old Winnfield Hwy in Jonesboro, with the kickoff scheduled for 5:30 pm.

“We are eager to get the season started,” said JHMS head coach Max Martinez. “The guys have been working hard, and we are expecting to have a good season.”

Tigers take down Haynesville in Scrimmage

Giving credence to the prediction of a good season by the young Tiger team is the performance that was exhibited in the scrimmage against perennial power Haynesville on Thursday. While no score is officialy kept, JHHS crossed the goal line twice compared to just once for the Golden Tornado.

Corey Campbell was named Player of the Game after scoring both Tiger touchdowns, one by breaking off a long run on offense and the other being on the defensive side of the ball with a “scoop and score” of a Haynesville turnover. Campbell also had a third score called back due to a penalty. Other players that earned praise from the coaching staff were Jasen McNeal, Greg Hendricks and Kaleb Washington.

“I am really proud of the effort given by our guys,” said Martinez. “Our defense played well all game and for the most part we won up front all night on both sides of the ball. We have a lot of things we need to work on but overall I thought we played very well.”

Weston Junior High boys basketball team rolls to Dodson Tourney Title

Tournament Champions!

With the 2025-26 school year just beginning a few days ago and students still finding their way to their new classes, the Weston Junior High boys basketball team is already in mid-season form. And what a form it is!

The early returns are in! If the results of the tournament were to be compared to an election, Weston won by a landslide. WJH proved that currently they stand head and shoulders above all other surrounding area teams, evidenced by the dominating performance demonstrated at the season-opening Dodson Tournament, where the Wolves easily throttled all three of their opponents to claim the title.

Weston took victories over Quitman, Castor, and Calvin in impressive fashion to earn the first-place trophy as the Wolves exhibited superiority on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. This was proven by WJH scoring in double figures in 10 of the 12 quarters played and holding their opponents to single digits in scoring in 11 of 12 quarters, which included eight quarters of giving up only 5 points or less.

“I am so proud of my team,” said Weston Junior High head coach Jacob Otwell. “Every single player gave everything they had, whether it showed on the scoreboard or pushing each other to be better. I couldn’t ask for a better group of young men.”

Weston 38 Quitman 27: (First Round) – In what proved out to be what should have been the championship game matchup, Weston exploded out of the locker room to take a 12-2 lead that ballooned to 22-5 at the half. Quitman made the score respectable by winning the second half by a 22-26 margin as WJH head coach Jacob Otwell emptied his bench. Colton Otwell scored 9 points to lead a balanced attack that saw 7 players score, followed closely by Bryce Tolar, who chipped in with 8 points. Cason Conn scored six first-half points, and the trio of Dane Clifton, Eli Henderson, and Andrea Spence all finished with four each. Jenson Waggoner also got in the act with three points. Hayden Seymore and Aiden Reed did most of the damage for the Wolverines, scoring 12 and 10 points respectively, while Mason Thomas, Cason Rogers, and Connor May added two points each.

WJH Scoring: Otwell 9, Tolar 8, Conn 6, Clifton 4, Henderson 4, Spence 4, Waggoner 3
QJH Scoring: Seymore 12, Reed 10, Thomas 2, Rogers 2, May 2

Weston 57 Castor 20 (Second Round) – WJH put it all together in game two of the tourney against Castor, who had drawn a first round as the Wovles scored in double digits in all four quarters while holding the Gators to single digits in the same. In reality, it was over after the first quarter as Weston shot out to a 17-3 lead and never looked back in establishing an early single-game season best in points. Ten players tallied points for the Wolves, led by Eli Henderson, who scored 11 to become the first WJH player to post double digits in points on the season. Cason Conn, Leighton Younce, and Bryce Tolar chipped in with 8, 7, and 6 points, respectively, followed by Kash Gandy with five and Colton Otwell, Elijah McClellan, and Quylyn Snuggs all finishing with four points each. Dane Clifton also added a basket.

Weston 45 Calvin 10 (Championship Game) – After taking down teams from Jackson and Bienville Parishes, the Wolves made short work of their Winn Parish as well to claim the title in impressive fashion. Once again, WJH jumped out to a huge halftime lead as Weston led 15-5 after one period that grew to 34-5 at the break as a result of an early-season quarter best of 19 points and holding Calvin, who had advanced to the title tilt by beating host Dodson and Saline, scoreless. A 10-5 third quarter Weston advantage was followed by the Wolves’ defense not allowing Calvin a single point for the second time in the contest in the fourth quarter for the final margin. Andrea Spence scored 8 to lead the nine WJH players who scored, with both Colton Otwell and Eli Henderson finishing with seven. Leighton Younse hit a pair of three pointers to finish with six points, the same total as turned in by Dane Clifton. Both Cason Conn and Zimichael Washington scored four points, with Darrell Guinn making a basket and Eli Jones adding a free throw.

JPASD Offers Employees Level One Chaplains Certification Training

In 1998, the Jackson Parish Police Jury created an Ordinance establishing the Jackson Parish Ambulance Service District (JPASD), founded on the premise that no citizen should be denied access to responsive, high-quality emergency care due to a lack of transportation.

Since that time, the dedicated and well-trained staff has become one of the premier ambulance providers in North Louisiana, committed to promoting and enhancing wellness, health, education, and safety in Jackson Parish.

In an effort to not only continue that tremendous level of support but also learn how to better serve Jackson Parish residents, JPASD provided a Chaplain’s Level One Certification training to its employees.

The training, which is designed to equip EMS professionals and community members with essential skills in listening, empathy, prayer, and compassionate support, was made possible through a partnership with the Louisiana Rural Ambulance Alliance (LRAA), and Team Jesus International.

“Jackson Parish Ambulance Service District congratulates the employees who responded to the recent education opportunity of the Chaplain’s Level One Certification training. We thank you for giving of your time to learn how to better serve Jackson Parish residents.”

Quitman Junior High girls win season opening tournament

Title Team!
Quitman Junior High won three straight games to take first place in the Dodson Tournament

An exhilarating one-point victory in the first round over Jackson Parish rival Weston catapulted Quitman Junior High School to victories over Castor and Saline and the season-opening Dodson Junior High Tournament title.

Quitman moved their early season record to 3-0 by besting Weston 29-28 in the first round and then followed that up with a 36-23 victory over Castor and beating Saline 43-30 in the championship game.

“I think this tournament proved that the girls’ teams in our area are all really good and well coached,” said Quitman Junior High head coach Kyle Leach. “I am proud of our girls for playing tough, smart, and keeping their cool in some tense situations. They are a fun group to coach.”

Quitman 29 Weston 28 (first round) – Easily the most thrilling game of the tournament saw Quitman take a 10-2 second quarter advantage that led to a 17-10 halftime lead that held up despite a determined late Weston rally. Both teams scored 10 points in the third period before Weston limited QJH to just two fourth-quarter points that put the Lady Wolves in position to steal the victory after creating a turnover with three seconds left and trailing by just one point. The Lady Wolverines persevered by not allowing Weston a shot as the final buzzer sounded. Kynleigh Leach and Ella Simonelli scored 9 and 8 points each to pace the QJH scoring attack. Audrina Martin finished with five points, Elliot Savage had four, and Demie McCurdy hit one of five three pointers that QJH made in the game. Rachel Bandy scored 11 of her game-high 13 points in the second half to fuel the WJH rally, with Kate Keiffer chipping in with 11 and Don’Nia Spence adding four.

Quitman 36 Castor 23 (second round) – Again, Quitman reversed an early deficit with a strong second quarter and then put the game away by outscoring Castor 21-10 in the second half.  It was a sterling defensive effort that led to the victory as Quitman forced 27 Castor turnovers to offset a 43% -31 % field goal percentage advantage by the Lady Gators.  Audrina Martin led QJH with 10 points, followed by Ella Simonelli chipping in with nine. Bella Caskey added 8 points and pulled down a team high seven rebounds as Kynleigh Leach scored six points, Amelia Staggs hit a basket and Demie McCurdy made a free throw to round out the scoring for Quitman.

Quitman 43 Saline 30 (Championship game) Audrina Martin and Kynleigh Leach both set new early-season high-point totals by scoring 14 and 12 points apiece to pace the Lady Wolverines to the tournament title.  As a team, Quitman continued to show game-by-game improvement, setting a new scoring standard for the third straight game. Bella Caskey scored 8 points for the second straight game, Ella Simonelli chipped in with seven, and Amelia Staggs tallied two for the Lady Wolverines.
